This will be the seventh consecutive year that the Rás wheels into the seaside town for its final climactic stage. The local committee are hard at work arranging the town’s biggest ever street party to welcome the Rás back to what is now it’s spiritual home. The golden opportunity afforded to the town, as a result of hosting the final day has not been lost on local Chamber President, Martin Scully. He told the County Leader, “From a chamber point of view, the likes of the annual motorcycle races and the staging of the final day of the Rás, have resulted in much welcomed busi- ness to the town. It is an ideal way to introduce new people and potential tourists and it also succeeds in keeping the profile of Skerries high,” he said. The fact that the event will be screened on TV is another reason to welcome the Rás. An upbeat Scully said, “The high profile of a small town like Skerries is of immense importance, particularly as we are in the teeth of a recession. Events like the motorcycle races, the Rás and the fact that Skerries was voted “Community of the Year” last year, has catapulted the town to national prominence. Our Tidy Towns committee ensure that we are table toppers every year and we look forward to winning the overall prize soon. The Rás attracts people from all over and what better way to showcase our beautiful restaurants, shops, bars, coffee shops and the natural beauty of our town,” he said. A massive street party will kick off the day at 12.30pm with a range of activities for all ages including street games, funfair, farmers’ market stalls, with home- made goodies and crafts, music and dance, face- painting and magic shows. At around 3pm, the crowd on Strand Street will experience the thrills and excite- ment of the Rás and cheer, as the cyclists race through the town three times, battling it out for the coveted yellow jersey. Over 50 community and volunteer groups and schools will be involved and it is hoped that thou- sands will once again line the streets for a stirring end to this gruelling round-Ireland race. Visitors are especially welcome to make a real day of it and discover the charm of this beautiful town. Scully also spoke enthusiastically of plans for a Community Garden in the town. “The Chamber are taking the leasehold of a plot of land from the Council and developing it into a community garden. We are really looking forward to that, which will add greatly to the community spirit of the town.” If the street party this year is as good as in previous years, then Skerries is set for a bonanza in terms of exposure and the sort of positive publicity you can only dream of. As Martin Scully said, “This is an oppor- tunity not to be missed.” Local TD, Clare Daly (SP), has reacted angrily to the decision of the Department of Social Protection to shut the doors of the Community Welfare offices in Malahide and Donabate. An angry Daly, in calling on the Minister to rescind the deci- sion, told the County Leader , “Axing the community welfare officer services from Malahide and Donabate, at a time when more people than ever need to avail of it, is a severe blow to families and individuals in the area and cannot be allowed to proceed. People from Donabate now have to travel to Swords, which does not have the resources to handle the extra workload, while Malahide people will have to go to Kilbarrack to access a service that will only be open for an hour and a half, three mornings a week, is scandalous,” she said. “The state has decided in it’s wisdom to withdraw these services, when they should be increasing them, There has never been a time when people in these communities needed this service more than now,” she said. She continued: “These Community Welfare services have been in operation for many years and this is a huge blow to residents living in both areas. At a time when unfortunately more people than ever need to access social welfare services, forcing people who have very little income to travel is horrendous.” “This is part of a wider problem of inadequate Social Welfare services across the North County. Forcing people who are unemployed to spend their limited resources on bus and train fares, or petrol going into Swords or the city centre is just not on,” she concluded. McNally’s Funeral Home, the well known Balbriggan busi- ness has officially opened their new premises on Drogheda Street in the town. The location of the business is on the site of the iconic National Irish Bank in the centre of Balbriggan and is certain to be a boost for busi- nesses in the immediate area. McNally’s have been operating in the town for close on 140 years and the opening of the new, expanded business is viewed as a vote of confidence in Balbriggan as a place to set up business, Despite the recession, proprietors Patrick and Monica Hickey showed their confidence in the town and chose the landmark building as the ideal location for their new venture. The building has been completely renovated to facilitate the expanded range of services provided by this progressive company, where nothing is left to chance and the attention to detail has the client firmly in mind. The sensitive renovation has ensured that many of the original features of the building have been retained. A report by the Council's Project Engineer for Greater DublinDrainage, Peter O'Reilly, is set to cause outrage among manycounty councillors and anti Super Sewage Plantactivists. The report claims that "one regionalwastewater treatment plant will have a lesserimpact on the environment than a number ofsmaller plants in the area." Already, former CountyMayor, Ken Farrell (Lab) has come out strongly inopposition to the report in a strongly worded state-ment to the County Leader.Farrell, who has been very vocal in his opposition tothe proposed Super Sewage Plant said, "A state-ment like this is absolutely crazy and makes nosense whatsoever. Although I'm not from a technicalor scientific background, you don't need to be agenius to figure out that a Super Sewage Plant that has thecapacity to cater for two million people, would do more damage

than smaller units. A catastrophe in a plant of the size proposedwould cause untold damage to the coastline." A furious Farrellcontinued, "If I could afford it, I would produce experts who wouldtake a contrary opinion to the council's one and tear their argu-ment to shreds," he concluded. The controversial report was made after a meeting of the ElectedMembers of the County Council on Tuesday, 10th April last, saying“Both the Greater Dublin Strategic Drainage Study (GDSDS) in2005 and the Strategic Environment Assessment in 2008 confirmthat the local rivers and streams in North County Dublin are too

small to be able to absorb treated water from anumber of smaller plants. One regional plant willhave a lesser impact on the environment than anumber of smaller plants,” it was claimed.O’Reilly, who is Project Engineer for the GreaterDublin Drainage project, which is required to identifya suitable location in North County Dublin for a newregional wastewater treatment works, a marineoutfall and an orbital sewer, told the ElectedMembers that the Technical Consultants are stillconsidering the more than 10,000 submissionsreceived from the publicduring the most recent,

Plans For Children’sHospital For North CountyFollowing a recent front page article in the CountyLeader, calling for the new Children’s Hospital to belocated in the North County, it seems that our proposalmay soon become a reality.Broadmeadow Healthcare Group have submitted aproposal to locate the National Paediatric Hospital on asite of 20.2 ha ( 50 acres ) at Lissenhall, Swords. Thesubmission was headed up by Francis Whelan, CEO,Broadmeadow Healthcare Group, who as team leaders, have co-ordinated the Clinical, Planning and conceptualdesign for this very signifi-cant site. Whelan, who is anarchitect and leadinghealthcare practitionerhopes to bring the plan toreality.Whelan spoke to theCounty Leader about theplans for the project. “Thekey advantages are that itwill be a greenfield site of50 acres within 600 acres of land highlighted for futuredevelopment by the County Council, with a vision for ahospital. There will be no need for 15 to 17 storey highrise hospital design. The Lissenhall site proposes 5 to 7storeys,” he said.He spoke passionately about the need to plan for ourchildren’s healthcare needs for the foreseeable futureand in fact, the next 100 years and the great advantagesof locating in the North County. The proposed site willbe within easy access to the excellent motorwaynetwork, 900 metres off M1, with stress free accessfrom all parts of Ireland, with no congested city centretraffic, with no difficult navigation and adequateparking, with over 2000 spaces planned. There will alsobe an opportunity for a Maternity Hospital with HighRisk Maternity unit and adult teaching. It will be well served and accessible to the public trans-port system with over 10 bus services available and thesite adjoins the planned Metro North, creating excellentlinks to Dublin Airport and City. Perhaps it is time nowfor Dr Reilly to step up to the mark and give his backingto the location of the hospital in the North County.

Eighty Not OutFor BarneyWell known local charity fundraiser,Barney Greene recently celebrated his80th birthday. A party was held recentlyto mark the occasion at the Man O Warpub. Barney spent most ofhis life in the quiet town-land of Man O War, only astone’s throw from Lusk,Skerries and Balbriggan. Barney started to work onthe land when he waseleven yearsold. In 1962 Barneymarried a local girl namedAgatha Farrell and theyhad a family of five;Brenda, Gerard, Philomena, Maria andMark. Barney also has four grandsonsto keep him young at heart. This yearwill be a special one, as Barney cele-brates both his 80th birthday and his50th wedding anniversary with Agatha.

In recent years Barney became amember of the Fingal Vintage Societyand bought two vintage tractors, a1953 Ferguson 20 TVO and a 1962Fordson Dexta, to bring him back to hisyouth. Five years ago he came up withthe idea to organise a tractor run togive something back to the commu-nity, deciding to give all proceeds to St.

Francis’ Hospice, a veryworthy cause for the greatcare they provide forcancer patients. For thepast five years the tractorrun has been held on thefirst Sunday ofJanuary, and this yearover €7500 was raised, with 103 tractors takingpart in the run. Thanks tohis dedication and the

generous support of the local commu-nity, Barney has raised over €40,000 inthe past five years. We wish him manymore years raising much neededfunds. Well done Barney, and keep upthe good work.

Young Blood In Oldtown

There could be a new literal translation, but ‘macra’when I learned Irish meant ‘sons’ and ‘na feirme’meant ‘farms’, so the collective idea of the organisa-tion’s name meant ‘young farmers’.Happily, although the farming community of NorthCounty Dublin may have undergone radical change, itsmost vibrant social club is thriving again. Since 2009the North County club has been revitalised with newmembership and it has become a focal point for peoplefrom 17-35 years of age who share a love of countryliving. The County Leader caught up with Clodagh Barnwall,an officer of the fledgling club to find out what the 21stcentury Macra is about. “Macra was only recently re-established in the North County, so we’re a new littleclub made up mostly of people from Swords,” shesays. “There’s about 20-25 of us who’d meet regularlyand there’s something on practically every weekend. The 20-year-old is the club’s current Public RelationsOfficer, which means she’s keeping not just the currentNorth County members up-to-date on upcomingevents, but plays a large role in publicising them toencourage other like-minded people to join in.She organises posters, from designing them to distrib-uting them, gets the word out to local papers and radiostations, updates the club’s facebook page and allthat’s just for starters. She’s part of the team that won the Dublin leg of thevolleyball competition, is studyingfor a bachelor’s degree atMaynooth, and works part-time atKettle’s Country House Hotel inRolestown. As her degree course isin Music and Geography, shehopes eventually to become asecondary school teacher. Shealso practises teaching music tohopeful piano-players.“We could be training for a volley-ball competition, or rowing in onwhatever project we’re focusing onas a club.” She goes on to explainthat there are half a dozen otherelements to the organisation apartfrom the expected “agriculture” department.“Not all of our members are from a rural or farmingbackground, some of them are from Dublin citysuburbs, some are from the country and came to livehere,” she says, adding that the key element of whythe club’s growing is that it’s great fun. It’s aims for it’smembers are to provide opportunities in projects suchas sports, public speaking, performing arts, communityinvolvement and personal development.“Travel’s high on our agenda,” she says of the tripsthey make within Ireland and abroad, from theEuropean Rally, to the Spring and Autumn seminars. There have been exchanges with similar groups inCanada, Austria and Scotland. Group outings could bejust into town (where they recently won the DublinVolleyball competition), to Kilkenny cheering on IanLavery from Treble R (the biggest Dublin club) in April’sMr Personality festival, to Athboy for the June bankholiday festival where Eilish O’Sullivan’s taking part inthe Miss Blue Jeans pageant. In August, Clodaghherself is representing Dublin in Tipperary town’s five-day Miss Macra festival.

Her enthusiasm for Macra is infectious and youcouldn’t help but be impressed at the dynamism of thenational network. The clubs in Dublin – Treble Rs,Dublin Mountains, University College Dublin andDublin Institute of Technology – could field all-Dublinteams for some of the national competitions. Or youcould get an ad-hoc scattering of support from acrossthe various Dublin districts if anyone gets a figary toattend the welding competition, the senior debatingshowdown, or try their luck at what sounds like theploughing championship for beginners: the Macrafarm skills competition.“The farm skills competition is being hosted by DublinMountains this year, teams of three could hang a gate, drive a tractor and move bales of hay, that sort ofthing, and it’s open to women,” she says. Althoughraised on a farm herself and is no slouch behind thewheel of a tractor, it’s the self-development and friend-ship aspect of Macra that attracted her to the club.“I heard about a new club being set up, so I dragged afew friends along as it’s a great way to get to knowpeople.”She was already vaguely familiar with the club, as herparents, Martina and Gerard had been active membersin its North County heyday when there were individualclubs in Lusk, Rush and Balbriggan too.Within the first year she had competed in the all-Ireland bowling. But she surprised herself in other

ways too, thanks to the club. “I metnew friends, my confidence wasboosted, for instance you’d get upand speak in front of people, there’s a lot that’s already organ-ised, the structure’s there for you tofocus on what you’re good at.”There are talent competitions indifferent categories, such as themusical one that had its finale inthe National Concert Hall: “Macra’sabout supporting you when youface that fear,” she says with a grin,“building up your confidence andchannelling it into one or other ofthe categories of upcoming social

events.”The performing arts strand of competitions includesCapers, where entrants perform for 15 minutes, theamateur dramatic competition and straightforwardpublic speaking like the debating contest mentionedearlier. The big drive for fundraising this year was the BeGreen, Be Seen in aid of Irish Autism and it raised awhopping €2,000. “We were delighted with thesupport we got from the sponsors, we couldn’t havedone it without them. We’ve done other types offundraisers before, like we organised the tractor runfor the past few years for the Central Remedial Clinic orIrish Guide Dogs – the route around North CountyDublin would go up as far as Bellewstown and I’veeven driven a tractor myself on the run – and we’rehoping to create a different fund-raiser in its place.”But for now, Clodagh’s on a mission to invite CountyLeader readers under 35 years to come down to theHarp Bar in Swords’ Carnegie Court Hotel on the firstThursday of every month to see for themselves whatthe Macra (and na hIníonigh!) are up to.

remember to plan welland avoid disappoint-ment.

Plan Your Dream Day

Start at the beginningand that means puttingall your cards on the

table and deciding whatis reasonable and whatis out of the question. Ifyou’re going to have atraditional wedding in achurch, you would needto see if the date youwant if available. This iscrucial and you need tobe really doing thisfirst. Another thing that

should be high on thepriority list is the venue. These things are soimportant and if theyare left on the longfinger you could end upbeing sorry in the end.The big day is some-thing that some peopleplan for a few years, however others that

may be in different situ-ations and decide to getmarried within a fewmonths. Whatever wayyou decide to go makesure you keep your planof action at hand. Here’s a tip, place aposter of your to-do listin you’re kitchen. Youspend time there everyday and when your

waiting on the kettle toboil, or your toast topop you could bemaking a few phonecalls. The kitchen isalso a place you cansummon your familyand decide who isdoing what. Whenhanding out jobs for thewedding you have tohave everything

covered and considerother people’s feelings.Does your other halfhave a bigger familythan you and maybethey will have more onthe alter, If a situationlike this arises and youdon’t want a bigwedding party, makethis decision early. These days some

people only go for onebridesmaid and onegroomsman. This wayyou can still have thetraditional weddingstyle without the bigfuss. On the other handif you want to have a lotof family and friendstaking part in the cere-mony make that deci-sion too.

different shape roomsavailable and there arealso lots of special offersavailable too. Nowcouldn’t be a better timeto go shopping for awedding. Once youdecide on the venue andthe date you can get onto the exciting stuff. There is so much excite-ment when planning awedding. Who will beinvolved and invited, what way will youorganise the seating, where will you getmarried? The list goes on

and on, you get one thingsorted and then there issomething else needingyour attention.

Happy Memories

When you love some-body enough to marrythem you are going towant to remember everylittle detail of the day andkeep the memories closeto your heart forever. Awedding day can takeforever to come, whenyou’re the one waiting onit and when the daycomes, it will go by sofast you won’t believe it,so make sure you havelots of memories to fallback on. When you lookat your weeding DVD orphotograph album, youwill remember things youmight have forgottenabout otherwise. All ofthese little things willneed to be taken care ofbefore the big day andbooked well in advance. The North County has agreat selection of photog-raphers, wedding wear, bakeries, transportcompanies, caterers andjewellers to mention afew of the things you willwant to have to makeyour day a very specialone.

Putting Your Mark On It

You can make your bigday very different thaneverybody else’s bychanging a few littlethings. Many coupleshave boxes of matchesplaced in front of eachguest with their name onit. There are lots of littlethings like this that canmake a difference. Somecouples put disposablecameras on the tables, these are collected whenthe wedding is over andthe bride and groom getto see the photographstheir guests have takenon their special night.

Don’t Forget

Getting married is ahuge step in the journeyof any couple and it’salso a great event forany family to experience. Therefore, enjoy theexperience and take it allin your stride. Nothingruns smoothly so allowroom for some littlemistakes to happen.Thinking everything willrun perfect andsmoothly is a bit of ahigh risk, so when onlythe minimal goes wrongit won’t be so bad andthe day will be remem-bered by all.

Beit a parent, a child, a family member or a closefriend, this encounter with death is unavoidable. When we face the death of someone we love, weface an unspeakable loss. A future is mapped outfor us where there will always be a large absence inour lives. In an attempt to minimise the impact of death, it isimperative to employ the service of an experiencedand caring funeral director, who will not only providethe basic funeral requirements, but in many casescan provide much needed advice and information on

McNally Funeral Directors

the old National Irish Bank premises. This iconicbuilding, situated in the heart of Balbriggan, is anideal location and has given the area a very welcomeboost in the process, providing a convenient towncentre location for this excellent company. What makes McNally’s Funeral and MemorialServices so different to any other funeral directors.?For starters, they are one of the longest establishedFuneral Directors in the entire country. They werefounded in 1878 by Joseph Sweetman, until hisdeath in 1894. The business was then taken over byJames McNally until 1940, and was carried on by hiswife, Mary until 1950. Her son, Sean then took overfor the next 51 years, until 2001, when he retired. It was then that Patrick Hickey, a native of Balrotherypurchased the business and has managed the firmas McNally’s ever since. Patrick, along with his wife,Monica have established a new branch to the busi-ness, having opened a Monumental and Memorialsside to McNally’s. Their former premises on MarketGreen served the community of Balbriggan for 11years. As a curious aside, the historic building onDrogheda Street, now occupied by McNally’s was

built 13 years after thecompany was estab-lished, more than 130years ago. Patrick andMonica are now cele-brating their 11th year incharge of McNally’s. Froma staff of two in thebeginning, there are nowseven employed, five fulltime and two part time.McNally’s are very partic-ular about their staff. “We only employ staff of thehighest calibre. Here we have a very simple mottowhen employing staff members. If they are notprepared to carry out a service for others, like it wasfor their own family, then they should not beworking for McNally’s. We have caring staff who dothe work required, but more importantly, are therebefore and after for advice and a listening ear. Wework as a family for your family,” said Patrick. Staffmembers include Willie Kenny, Desmond Flynn,Sharon Tolan, Noel Tolan and Desmond Flynn Snr.

Patrick spoke sensitively and caringly about howthe company is developing. “Throughout allthese changes, the focus has always been onproviding the very best service to the bereavedand the preparation of their deceased loved onesin a caring and professional way. We have alsoemployed the most caring and helpful staff toassist you at every turn,” he said. He alsoemphasised the company’s commitment to beingavailable after the funeral for further help andadvice. “Many people drop in for a chat and they

are always welcome. It gives them great comfortand we are delighted to provide this service. They know we have helped them in their hour ofneed and they obviously feel comfortable withus,” he said.As the historic building was in a fairly dilapidatedcondition when Patrick and Monica took it over lastyear, it needed major refurbishment and redesign. This was done with great precision and imaginationand it now caters for the needs of all. It is capable ofholding 100 people in the main funeral room, wherethe coffin is located. There is also air conditioningand it is fitted with a sound system for both surroundsound and microphones for service narration. Thefuneral room lends itself well to both religious

Patrick and Monica Hickey, with some of their funeral cars at the rear of the building.

A Hair-Raising Day ForDonabate SchoolThe pupils and teachers from Donabate/PortraneEducate Together were all overwhelmed by thesupport and enthusiasm for their recent Shave or Dyeevent. The event was a fantastic success, around 485of the school’s pupils arrived for school with crazyhair and their school yard was filled with every colourand style imaginable. Elaine Gillespie from the irish Cancer Society cameout to visit and enjoy the festivities and the school

was also featured live on the Ian Dempsey BreakfastShow. The school’s voluntary ‘victims’ had their hairtransformed and if this wasn’t enough the staffroombecame a hair salon for the day and the remainingstaff (and some of their children!) got sprayed, teasedand back combed to perfection. All parents and children embraced the idea so theschoolyard was a vision to behold with over 500 crazyhair dos! They also celebrated with a Crazy Hair Shakeand Wake which went down a treat. As well as that, two brave dads agreed to be shaved in front of theirsons’ classes. All in all, it was a very hair-raising expe-rience for the school!

Pictured here are the Second Year CSPE class from Fingal Community College during a recent visit to Leinster House aspart of their action project for CSPE. During the visit students watched a debate on education taking place in the Dailchamber with Education Minister Ruairi Quinn and experienced a vote taking place in the Seanad. Students had a ques-tion and answer session with Minister for Health James Reilly, Clare Daly, Brendan Ryan and Alan Farrell and topicalissues such as bin charges and household charges were discussed. The students had a memorable day and some haveindicated that they would like to become involved in politics through Dail na Nog since their visit.

Pictured are three students from the Loreto SecondarySchool in Balbriggan, Laura Mooney, Julie O’Connor andShannon Scott, who were the winners of SciFest@DIT fortheir project, “Is there a genetic super-taster componentcontrolling the Irish choice of tea?” The project examinedif Irish people inherit super-taster tendencies which influ-ence their choice of tea by analysing taste sensitivity andresponse to flavours. They discovered that 35% of theirparticipants were super-tasters which is significantlyhigher than the European average, concluding that thereis a strong association between being a super-taster andhaving a specific preference for a certain brand of tea.

Zumba® Fanatics achieve long-term benefits while experiencing an absolute blast in one exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing, awe-inspiring movements meant to engage and captivate for life!

The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Add some Latin Flavour and international zest into the mix and you’ve got a Zumba® class!

In the past years, the Zumba® program has become nothing short of a revolution, spreading like wildfire, and positioning itself as the single most influential movement in the industry of fitness.

Zumba® is recognized by the world’s leading fitness educators, including The American Council on Exercise and The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America.
