The duo took bronze in the Women’s Individual Time Trial B at Brands Hatch. This is the second medal this duo has won at the Games. Last Sunday week, Catherine and Fran secured a silver medal in the para-cycling individual B pursuit final at the Velodrome. They clocked a time of 35:29.56 to secure their place on the podium. The Netherlands pairing of Kathrin Goeken and Kim Van Dijk took gold in 35:02.73 with the New Zealand tandem featuring Phillipa Gray and Laura Thompson taking silver with a time of 35:07.68. Despite being World Bronze Medallists in this event, the pair were not treating it as a priority event, and were not confident that the course would suit them. However, after their rest day they were able to put in a massive effort to come away with a Bronze medal. Fran Meehan commented, “We have a really strong team, and I think that’s what has moved us on, we support each other, share our advice, and it means we all improve.” President Michael D Higgins congratulated the Paralympians, when he said, “I want to sincerely congratulate our Team Ireland on their outstanding performance at the London Paralympic Games. This team has won 16 medals, eight gold, three silver, and five bronze; what a remarkable achievement.” “Our Paralympian athletes are inspirational role models for us all. Their courage, commitment and sporting prowess will live long in the hearts and minds of the Irish people. I look forward to meeting them in Áras an Úachtaráin in the near future and to congratulating them in person.” President Higgins also confirmed that he will host a reception for our Olympic athletes in Áras an Uachtaráin on Friday, 21st September. Pictured above Swords lady, Catherine Walsh proudly celebrates her bronze medal with her son Conor Roode, after finishing third in the women's individual B time trial at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. It Just Keeps Getting Better For Catherine With the late surge in fine weather recently after an awful summer, playgrounds across the North County were full of families making the most of the Indian summer. In an effort to main- tain this family centred focus of our parks, the County Council has decided to adopt a smoke free policy in all of our local authority controlled playgrounds. However, the anti- smoking signage has been displayed in only four playgrounds so far, namely Ardgillan Castle, Newbridge Demesne, Malahide Castle and Millennium Park in Dublin 15. The primary aim of the initiative is to discourage people from smoking in a children’s environment, to reduce cigarette litter, e.g butts and cigarette packages thrown on the ground in our parks. The Public Consultation Report revealed that “research was conducted in August 2010, prior to the initiative, to determine levels of second hand smoke in the playground. It also assessed the amount of litter from cigarettes and to gather information from playground users on their smoking behaviour, attitudes to smoke free policies and in particular banning smoking in the playground. This survey of 105 people showed strong support (87 per cent of respondents) for reducing second hand smoke in the playground. The highest number of cigarette butts observed around a single park bench was 27.” Many of the park users, who spoke to the County Leader found that the delay in making all public playgrounds smoke free areas was difficult to understand. At the County Council meeting on Monday 9th July last, the report on the Public Consultation on Tobacco Free Playgrounds was presented to the elected members and adopted. Our local authority was the first in Ireland to formally adopt this as a policy and a council spokesperson told the County Leader , “The next step for us is to erect signage at all our public playgrounds, and to use our website/social media and traditional communication channels to raise awareness of this policy. This will be happening over the coming weeks.” “The signage is in place in our four regional public playgrounds at Millennium Park, Ardgillan Demesne, Newbridge Demesne and Malahide Castle for the moment, and will be rolled out to all of the 50 public playgrounds in Fingal. The Smoke-Free Playgrounds are self- policed,” she said. When the County Leader paid a visit to Newbridge Demesne on a beautiful early autumn evening, the playground was full of families enjoying themselves. There were ‘No Smoking’ signs inside the playground, but a playground user pointed out to us” that there were no signs outside the playground to alert smokers as they approached the playground. She felt that this would constitute adequate signage that smoking was prohibited in the playground.” Noel Costello from Swords uses the playground on a regular basis and was enjoying playing with his granddaughter. “I think it’s a very worthwhile project. Neither I nor any of my family members smoke, and I think it would make a big difference to me if smoking were allowed here.” It’s a great environment and I really enjoy it,” he said. Given that there is no legislation to control smoking in playgrounds and that it is a self policing project, the County Leader spoke to Park Ranger at Newbridge, Ilya Usanov, who said: “If I saw someone smoking, I would approach the person and ask him/her to refrain from smoking. That’s all we can do with the current legislation. If the person became diffi- cult, I would report it to my manager and then, perhaps the Gardai. Some people have approached me about smoking in the play- ground and I have spoken to the persons and the problem was solved without any inci- dents,” he said. Many parents and park users feel that proper signage outside the playgrounds, at the entrance, would be sufficient to deter smokers from lighting up. Speaking at the launch of the second tobacco free public playground at Rivermeade earlier in the year, Dr Nazih Eldin, Head of Health Promotion HSE Dublin North East said, “Parents and adults are the most important role models for children and supporting people not to smoke around chil- dren indoors and outdoors is one of the clearest messages we can give our children.” By Patrick Finnegan Noel Costello from Swords is pictured with his granddaughter, Lauren in the playground at Newbridge Demesne in Donabate. Call For Smoke Free Playgrounds It was yet another wonderful year for our Tidy Towns contestants, as the results of the 2012 competition were released last Monday. In a glittering ceremony at the Helix Theatre, both Skerries and Malahide retained their Gold medals. Skerries, with a score of 306, improved their points by three and were only six points behind the overall winner, Abbeyshrule, Co Longford. Similarly, Malahide, with 293 points improved their score by two points from last year. Lusk, who came third in the county, improved their figure by an impressive five points from last year, with an excellent 277 points. There were good performances by Balscadden, up by five points to 257, with new entrants, Ballyboughal scoring an impressive 255 points. Other areas that bettered last year’s positions included, Swords, with 264 points, up five and Balbriggan, up a very impressive 10 points to 251 points. In fact, Balbriggan won the Dublin Endeavour Award, and Skerries landed the Dublin Regional Award, so well done to the committees there. One of the highlights of the day was the nomination of John Flynn from Lusk Tidy Towns, in the new cate- gory of ‘Tidy Town Heroes’. John was one of 13 volunteers from across Ireland to be nominated. Another good performance was that of Rush who scored an impressive 234 points, up 9 points on last year. See our Special Report in next week’s edition. The Write SortOf Challenge

Jennifer McShane has a very active, yet chal-lenging lifestyle. The 25 year old writer and jour-nalist from Swords deals with many challengesas a result of having mild Cerebral Palsy, but iskeen to point out that she doesnt feel this is anegative aspect of her life. It has, she says, hadthe opposite effect. Im a very positive personby nature, so I think having the various chal-lenges (big or small) as I do, simply makes mework harder to achieve my goals. It seemed a natural choice to talk to one of ourown County Leader journalists about her experi-ence in what is said to be an extremely toughindustry to break into before taking into accountanything else. I think at first, I was slightlyconscious of my career choice, given that it canbe a very active job and I wont be running amarathon anytime soon, but ultimately, writingwas the only thing I could ever see myself doing.Ive been working with the County Leader sinceMay last year and all the staff have been nothingbut understanding. It really makes your job somuch easier when youre in such a positive envi-ronment. Im learning all the tricks of the tradefrom them, so I owe them a great deal!Jennifer has had a love of writing from a youngage, going back to her earlyschool days. I was alwayswriting something or other inlittle notebooks, whether itwas short stories or poems. Then in secondary school Ihad a fantastic Englishteacher, Mr Clarke, who wasalways very encouraging. She then went on to studyJournalism in college for fouryears, which she says gaveher a real taste of how inter-esting and tough it was goingto be to succeed once she left. All the lecturers were very encouraging, partic-ularly where I was concerned, but at the sametime, things werent glossed over; you knew youwere going to have to sink or swim to make it.She says its this attitude that she took on boardwhen it came to applying for jobs: The media isvery cut throat as it is and there are fewer jobsout there than there ever have been, so I knew Iwas going to have to work extra hard to make it,but I love a good challenge and never thoughtthat having the mild CP would affect my gettinga job. I really think that my skills should speakfor themselves at this stage. One of hergreatest achievements to date was graduatingwith her honours degree. It wasnt just aboutthe hard work it took to get it. I really owe somuch to my parents for their support while Istudied, I couldnt have done it without them, soI was so happy to receive the degree because ifnothing else, I knew it would make them proud.I did things the hard way, she continues. I

worked on various internships, free of charge fora year once I left college, just to get my work outthere. Then once I got to working with theCounty Leader and gained my experience, Ifound things got a little easier. Jennifer worksin Print, Online and Digital media and feels thatsuccess stories come from those that are a Jack(or Jill) of all trades Journalist. You have to beable to offer your Editor more than one set ofskills nowadays I think. She says that her CP is a complex thing to tryand explain, as there are so many different typesand no two people are ever effected in the exactsame way. But it is for the most part, met verypositively by those she meets. People areusually very positive about it and any other reac-tion is simply to do with a lack of understanding,so I just dont let it bother me. In the simplestterms, its only my walking and balance that areslightly affected, so it just means my energyruns out quicker than that of the averageperson. The young Journalist clearly has a glass is halffull attitude to life and credits her motherAnnette, in particular with this: My entirefamily and friends are wonderful, but its my

mother who gave me my posi-tive mentality. She always (andto this day still does), encour-aged me to be myself and hasalways told me that anything Iwant to achieve can be done.Ive always felt that themajority of my achievementsare down to her and firmlybelieve I wouldnt be were I amtoday without the never endingsupport of my family. Family is clearly very importantto Jennifer. She says she getsher love of both writing and

movie obsession from her dad, Thomas and isequally close to her identical twin sister Lucyand younger brother Thomas Jr. Theyre all likemy support network! My life is made easierthanks to them. Jennifer also regularly attended the CentralRemedial Clinic since she was two years old andcant speak highly enough of all the staff: TheCRC are absolutely fantastic. The entire team isdedicated to helping you in whatever way theycan so that your quality of life can constantly beimproved. As work has taken over I dont attendas much as I used to, but I know theyre alwaysthere if I have any issues. Its a constant teameffort, that requires equal amounts of hard workfrom the parents and staff.Aside from writing, she loves film, music andtravel and is always looking for new challenges.Ill always want to better myself in every aspectof my life, but for the time being, I just want tokeep writing as much as possible.

North County parents are beingurged to ask children how much timethey have to eat their lunch. TheEPAs Stop Food Waste Programmeis encouraging all parents to do their homework when gettingtheir children ready for back to school. With children now back to school allover the North County, they arecalling on parents to start the schoolyear with a clean slate and rethinkhow to plan and prepare their chil-drens lunches.Throwing away uneaten lunches is awaste of money but luckily, the StopFood Waste programme has puttogether some tips for parents on

how to avoid food waste when itcomes to school lunches, and savemoney in the process. They suggestthe following tips: Let your kids bepart of the lunch planning process. This will ensure that what youprepare is something they like to eat.Consider making a list of food yourchild likes to eat for lunch. This listcan be kept on the fridge and can beadded to by your child. Small sizedfruit are a great idea as they cut backon waste and pose less of a chal-lenge to small children and take lesstime to eat. Instead of throwing awaydinner leftovers, reuse them forlunches the next day.Pack drinks in reusable containersand send a small amount to school ina reusable container with your childeach day. Finally, before offeringyour child an after school snack, check to see if they have finishedtheir lunch.

    HOROSCOPES

AQUARIUS Jan 20 - Feb 18Opting out of conflicts wont be easy. You wantto defend others and stand up when circum-stances become unfair. However, this is a weekwhen even your most straightforward state-ments could be misunderstood.

PISCES Feb 19 - Mar 20View this week as preparation for the extraordi-nary opportunities that will come at the monthsclose, and you can even feel positive about chal-lenging encounters. Time prepare the mind andbody for what is to come.

ARIES Mar 21 - Apr 20Since you cant avoid the minefield of conflictsindicated, you may as well use the opportunityto tackle persistent issues. However, do bear inmind that even ordinary situations couldbecome confused right now.

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 20Judge this week by its unfair dilemmas, andyoull decide it is a total write-off. Indicationsare that youre blamed for problems not of yourmaking, and others speak out of turn. Note allfor future reference.

Gemini May 21 - Jun 20If ever there was a time when addressing issuesboth swiftly and with uncompromising claritywas vital, its during this week. The difficulty, however, is that youre uncertain about yourpriorities and past decisions.

Cancer Jun 21 - Jul 22Your reaction to the bad behaviour of othersdepends more on the nature of the damage thattheyve done than how much theyve upset you.Whats tricky, however, is that you want to bedirect but not alienate them.

Leo Jul 23 - Aug 23As far as youre concerned, the faster you settlemisunderstandings - the better. However, hastily made arrangements could lead to moremisunderstandings - and that is what you dontwant right now.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 22The more direct you are about both your desiresand your concerns, the better. In some cases, youre concerned that such bluntness wouldannoy others. However, their reactions make itclear that they take you seriously.

Libra Sep 23 - Oct 22The most important thing for you to keep inmind during this week is that most of whatsinvolved is nothing more than opinion. If youstart to justify yourself to other you could loseyour perspective. Stick to your views.

Scorpio Oct 23 - Nov 22Tackle all unexpected twists that will arise thisweek one by one, and you soon reduce them tomanageable tasks. Better yet, conquering thembanishes worries that have been both persistentand worrying.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21Patience has never been your strength, butdevelopments force you to either slow down orturn things over to others. While initiallyannoying, you will become wholeheartedlyinvolved - and delight with the results.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 19Recent events were both unsettling and exciting, forcing you to neglect matters from finances toissues with loved ones. But these can no longerbe ignored, and youll find yourself having todeal with the consequences.
