January, 2015 Tevet 5775

Dear Friends,

As 2014 was drawing to a close, the programming and activity we offered, we believe, IS a reflection of what helpsdefines us as a JCC - our commitment to perpetuate Jewish life and Jewish identity. Hebraica’s Annual Maccabi Gamescontinues to be a source of pride, not only in its scope and magnitude (more than 2,000 local registrations with more than650 games played), but also in its embrace of remembering from where we came; in celebrating our cultural diversity;and underscoring that regardless of our cultural differences, we stand together as ONE under the umbrella of “Klal Yisrael.”Celebrating Chanukah further emphasized our commitment to celebrate our rich cultural heritage with a “chock full” ofprogramming that included – Bamachol’s Chanukah Dance Festival (that filled the Julius Littman Performing Arts Theater),our Community Chanukah Celebration ushering in the holiday on its first night, the Senior Adult Chanukah Party, the AfterSchool Program’s Family Gathering, the Early Childhood Development Center’s Latke Family Dinner, Chanukah NightTime Kayaking and Candle Lighting, and J-CAT’s Jewish Educational Theatre’s (JET) first production of the season –“Chanukah at Bubbie’s” – brought the story and meaning of Chanukah to life on our J-CAT stage.

Another part of our mission defining who we are, is to provide our community with programming and activity thatpromotes health, wellness, socialization, and personal growth, while seeking to maximize each individual’s potential. When perusing this Program Guide, you will continue to see the broad range of programming that we offer and ourreasons for taking such pride in the work of our staff in making the MAR-JCC the hub of activity for the Jewish communityof North Miami-Dade.

Most exciting for us as we begin this new year…

The anticipation to break ground within the next several months for the George Feldenkreis Cultural Arts andEducation Center, that will allow us to enhance our offerings to YOU in the world of the arts, health and fitness, and socialand cultural programming. Our Capital Campaign Committee has been working diligently to meet its goals and namingopportunities are still available – if interested in supporting this wonderful project, contact Elizabeth Mitrani, at 305-932-400,ext. 114.

Expanding our relationship with Temple Sinai of North Dade where Camp Tol Taplin will be able to conduct itshighly recognized summer camp program for ages 2 – entering kindergarten, in what we are terming “at our Temple SinaiVillage.” This wonderful opportunity allows us to create a more intimate “haimish” setting for our younger campers wherethey will be able utilize Temple Sinai’s wonderful facilities including classrooms, interest rooms, playground, athletic field, and swimming pool. Furthermore, our summer program will also continue to benefit through the use of Hillel’s facilities, andits new Sports Complex.

The arrival, in February, of our new Shlicha (Cultural Emissary from Israel),Yael Cohen, will raise the level of Israelprogramming and activity in our MAR-JCC and community, while also strengthening the relationship with our PartnershipCity of Yerucham.

Since the strength of our Center is dependent upon our staff and its volunteer committees, we call upon you to getinvolved with us and ask that you not hesitate to contact either of us “to answer our call.” We look forward to seeing youat our many activities…or simply just grabbing a bite and socializing at one of the two restaurants on campus - KosherSubway or Elsie’s Café.

Extending best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy 2015.

Sincerely,

Paul Kruss Gary J. BomzerChairman of the Board President and CEO

Your philanthropic needs are our main concernWe understand that as a donor you are unique, as are your interests and passions. At the MAR-JCC, our goal is to get to knowyou and to understand your philanthropic needs. In this way, we can customize your donor experience and assist you in reachingyour personal philanthropic goals. The MAR-JCC’s three main fundraising initiatives are listed below. To explore any of theseopportunities, please contact Elizabeth Mitrani, Development Director, at 305-932-4200, ext. 114.

Your support of our initiatives strengthens today and tomorrowAnnual Appeal - Families Helping Families - Each year, as a result of gifts to the Annual Fund, the MAR-JCC is able to provide programming to children with special needs, teens and young adults; offer scholarships for Early Childhood Education, after school programs, summer camp; provide senior adults with wellness and social activities; and so much more.

Capital Campaign - Give to the Culture–Arts–Fitness–Gymnastics Capital Campaign today and investin the growth of the MAR-JCC and in-turn, enhance our ability to provide programs and services to our members and the community. The success of this campaign will result in the brand new George Feldenkreis Cultural Arts & Education Center, featuring the Alan and Diane Lieberman Theater, a “Rikudim” Israeli dance center, both music and art centers, along with new rooms for group fitness. We now have an improved and expanded fitness center, a gymnastics studio, and additional classrooms. Naming & Dedication opportunities are available.

Create a Jewish Legacy - Endowment Campaign - We are growing our Presidents’ Fund for the Future Endowment* in order to secure the future of the MAR-JCC. Create a Jewish Legacy is a programrepresenting a shared commitment by area synagogues, agencies, and day schools to work together tosecure a more vibrant Jewish future. With CJL, you have the ability to create one legacy gift which canbenefit all of the Jewish organizations that are important to you. Legacy giving can take the form of a bequest in your will, gift of life insurance, gift of IRA or Pension funds, gift of cash or assets, and a varietyof other vehicles. Gifts to the endowment are deposited, in perpetuity, and only a portion of the annualinterest earned on this account is used. This means your gift will continue to be impactful FOREVER! Whether you want to provide support with an immediate contribution, or want to design a plan throughCreate a Jewish Legacy, to benefit the Center in the future, there are many options to choose from.

You are Never too Youngto Start Building your

Legacy:A Gift of Life InsuranceWhat It Is: Life Insurance allows you to make apresent, rather than future gift, which may bemuch larger than you think might otherwise bepossible. Gifts of insurance are generallyaffordable, especially for younger donors.

How It Works: You name the Michael-Ann RussellJCC or any Create a Jewish Legacy partner asbeneficiary of a new life insurance policy. If the giftis irrevocable and the non-profit you’ve selected isthe owner and beneficiary of the policy, you areentitled to a charitable income tax deduction forall premiums paid. Existing policies may also becontributed and you are entitled to a charitableincome tax deduction for an amount essentiallyequivalent to the cash value of the policy.

Advantages:•Many (especially young people) find that insurance is an ideal way to create an endowment larger than they could otherwise afford

•Premiums paid are tax-deductible•You can honor or remember a loved one, orcreate your Jewish legacy in your own name

THE BUTTERFLYThe last, the very last,

So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow.Perhaps if the sun sun’s tears would sing

against a white stone…

Such, such a yellowIs carried lightly ‘way up high.

It went away I’m sure because it wished to kiss the world goodbye.

For seven weeks I’ve lived in herePanned up inside this ghetto

But I have found my people here. The dandelions call to me

And the white chestnut candles in the court.Only I never saw another butterfly.

That butterfly was the last one.Butterflies don’t live in here, in the ghetto.
