* ATM-NoliTC'ClrIVILEXtEil TO "I'MEIES C37EIARTB *rja0213 back to BOBBY VEE and CRICKETSIT seems most fitting that Bobby Vee should have formed such a close
attachment with the Crickets, Buddy Holly's former backing group. For didn't Bobby get his first break when he wasrushed into a concert to deputise for Buddy Hollyon the day that Buddy was killed in a planecrash ?
There may be some comparisons made by keenHolly fans, but I'm sure Bobby and the Crickets willprove an exciting combination when they start theirtour of Britain next weekend.
In the past two years, Bobby and the Crickets haveworked together several times and have become closefriends. As they all record for Liberty, it seemed quitenatural when they combined for the " Bobby Vee MeetsThe Crickets " album, now repeating its U.S. success here.
Both Bobby and the Crickets have, of course, had indepen-dent smash hits in Bilitain. Bobby came sixth in the 1961NME Chart survey, although so far this year he hasn'tdone so well
He started the year in fine style, with " Take Good CareOf My Baby " still in the charts and " Run To Him "following it. Then he faded. " Please Don't Ask AboutBarbara " missed completely, buthe recovered some w ha t with" Sharing You," which lasted severalweeks in the lists, although in thelower half.
His latest single, " A ForeverKind Of Love," was issued in earlySeptember, but has failed to clickas yet.
The Crickets met with little chart
success after Buddy died, but thisJune they came up with the Goffin-K ing composition, " Don't EverChange." The disc entered the NMEChart on June 27 and remained inthe lists until September 7.
Their latest single, " Little Holly-wood Girl," has not yet shown signsof being a successful follow-up,
though they hope to consolidatetheir position with this tour.
The Crickets were due to flytoday (Friday) from the Skates.Bobby Vee will be joining themtomorrow, after spending this weekon the continent.
They will be making radio and TV

appearances through next week, before opening the tour in Sheffieldon Saturday, November 7.
It will be the Crickets' third tourhere (previously with Buddy Hollyand the Everly Brothers) and Bobby'ssecond visit, following his mostsuocessful tour earlier this year.

Me Do" this week are the Beatles, a vocal -instrumental group who hail from Liverpool, thebirthplace of such stars as Billy Fury, FrankieVaughan, Norman Vaughan and Ken Dodd. Theirown composition, " Love Me Do," is their firstdisc to be released on a British label.
Previously they were with Polydor and had severaldiscs released on the Continent, including one withsinger Tony Sheridan, of " Oh Boy 1 " nate.
Why are they called " the Beatles " ? The boyslaughingly put off this question by saying : "Thename came to us in a vision.l "
The line-up is Jdhn Lennon (harmonica, rhythmguitar and vocal), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocal).George Harrison (lead guitar), and Ringo Starr (drum's).
Ringo, who joined the group earlier this year.was in the same class as Billy Fury at LiverpoolDingle Vale Secondary School.During their brief but eventful career, the Beatles
have become firm favourites at the Star Club inHamburg, apart from appearing art shows in Britainwith Little Richard. Bruce Channel, Gene Vincent.Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball and Joe Brown. Jae is amongtheir stoutest admirers.
As well as " Love Me Do," thehays have written more than 100 oftheir own songs. The flipside," P.S. I Love You," is also oneof their compositions.

QUESTION TIME with MARK WYNTERMARK WYNTER is not the easiest of persons to pin down
these days. Not only is he engaged in Larry Parnes' hecticround -Britain one-nighter tour, but whenever he does succeedin getting a few hours to himself, you can bet that the radioand TV producers are poised ready to snap him up.
With his current Top Ten entry-plus his lead role in the forth-coming all-star musical "Just ForFun "-Mark suddenly finds him-self as one of pop music's hottestproperties of the moment. And Imanaged to catch up with him lastweekend at Bristol, to quiz himabout his reactions to thesedevelopments.
f) Acting is your great ambition.' How do you feel now that the
right opportunity has presenteditself 7ANaturally I'm very happy about
it. But at the same time I amalso being rather cautious. You see,I don't think that "Just For Fun "will offer any great acting potential. As the title implies, it's basically an
escapist picture with the accent onmusic and comedy.
I imagine that my role will besomething similar to that played byCraig Douglas in " It's Trad Dad,"though perhaps developed just a littlemore.
Anyway, it's a wonderful openingfor me. I intend to take fulladvantage of it !

QDid this film offer come aboutbecause of your success with
" Venus In Blue Jeans "ATo some extent-at any rate.
I'm sure the record must haveboosted my chances.
I gather that, after Bobby Vintondropped out of the picture, KennyLynch (who is also in the film)suggested me to producer MiltonSubotsky.
He, in turn, asked to see some

n Do you know anything yet14 about your role in the film 7Will you sing ?AYes, I have three songs which
I shall be doing in the film-the title song, which is a duet withleading lady Cherry Roland, andtwo solos.
These are " I'm Happy WithYou" and " Vote For Me "--as youmay know, the latter was at onetime to have been the title of thepicture.
I am, of course, involved inthe story line of the film-and,in fact, I'm the only recordingartist in the picture not playinghimself. The other thing which pleases me
immensely about the film is that

Bobby Vee is taking part, and I shallbe very happy to renew my friend-ship with him.
Have you ever wanted to tacklen something not usually associatedwith you on disc ?AI think the first task of a singer
-and, indeed, his first ambition-is to be commercially appealing.
And if he has succeeded in win-ning some degree of appreciationthrough the medium of a style hehas created, he can't do very muchbetter than stick to that style.
I like romantic songs and I likebeat numbers of the smoother kind-and I'm always happy when I canrecord anything in this vein.
I wouldn't do any twist material, but I might have a go at rhythm-and-blues if something suitable camealong.
QDo you think that your moveto Pye has been advantageous ?
AYes. As you've so often writtenyourself, Derek. it's noticeable
that a label change more often thannot leads to an improvement in theartist's fortunes.
In this instance, I'm very impressedwith the team working at Pye-theyseem to have an extremely clearidea of what they are striving toachieve.
And, of course, their exploitationis marvellous.
Q Would you say that your singing`' style has been influenced byyour favourite singers ?A wouldn't say that I've been' deliberately influenced by 'anyother singer. I'm a great Sinatrafan-I have over 30 of his albumsand I think my friends must be sickto the teeth of hearing me playthem.
I also never tire of Nat Coleand Andy Williams. You know, you can learn an
awful lot from listening to albums-perhaps even more than from singinglessons. And I'm sure that after allthe LP listening I've done, some ofit must have sunk in subconsciously.
But I have not gone out of myway specially to model myself onsomeone.
9
n As an aspiring actor, do you`ce have any favourites in this field
AYes, indeed. My favourite actors are undoubtedly Paul
Newman and Burt Lancaster. Andmy top actress is Anna Magnani.
fi Have you any desire to appear"4' in a stage musical ?Acertainly wouldn't mind -
I'm sure it would be invaluableexperience. As a matter of fact, I
have been in line for a couplealready, including " Blitz!"
My agent, manager and I con-sidered both offers very carefully andeventually we decided not to accept-because it would mean restricting,my activities very severely.
And I do think that, at thisstage of my career, it's mostimportant for me to keep in thepublic eye.But I certainly hope to have a go
at a stage musical a little later, whenI feel ready for it.
n Have you yet considered the"c question of a follow-up to" Venus In Blue Jeans " ?AIt's a very big problem. The
bigger the hit, the more difficultbecomes the follow-up selection. Wehaven't actually chosen a numberyet-but we have three country-and-western type of songs in mind. We're trying to decide which is themost commercial -sounding.
STAR QUOTE
PAT BOONE used to say thathe might eventually retire
from show business and becomea full-time preacher. He feelsdifferently now. " I think," hetold writer Hyman Goldberg,
I can accomplish more good bybeing a successful entertainer anduse my success for good pur-poses, raising funds for researchin various fields of medicine. Why, by raising money, I can domore good than any doctor."

Ronnie Carroll k-a second hit ? r
THE Philips follow-up to " Roses Are Red "by Ronnie Carroll is called " If Only
Tomorrow." An easy -paced, romantic balladwith a pleasant melody that is tailor-madefor Ronnie.
Wally Stott's orchestra and chorus provide anexcellent backing. The song is better than RosesAre Red," but I'm not sure if it's quite socommercial.
Strong enough. though, to rate asanother hit for Mr. C.
" Think Of Her " is a warm andextremely appealing song sung byRonnie with sensitivity and sincerity.
JOHNNY BURNETTE
On the Liberty label a good 'unfrom Johnny Burnette called " Lone-some Waters." Bouncy beat, goodstrong tune and a fairly tough moodof lonesomeness.
Vocally, Johnny sounds at timesa bit like Elvis, but whatever youthink of that, this still rates as oneof Johnny's best performances.
" Damn The Defiant " is a songof days gone by, when a crew had tohe press-ganged into service aboardH.M.S. Defiant.
Makes a change to hear anAmerican singing a song of this typethat is not concerned wan ineAmerican Civil War, or indeed withAmerica at all !
BOBBY RYDELL
In this age of an established twistand a struggling Madison, it's a bitof a surprise to find that BobbyRydell has made a disc called TheCha-Cha-Cha."
The gimmick of this new Cameo -Parkway release is that " The Cha-Cha-Cha " converts itself into a verydanceable medium -pace twist.
Very catchy tune and excellentarrangement, which includes a girls'chorus, give this platter loads ofhit potential." The Best Man Cried " is slow.
sad and not the sort that adds upto what 1 call entertainment.
JOHNNY AND THE HURRICANES
It's quite a while since we sawJohnny and the Hurricanes in thehit parade and their latest stab at thecharts is with " Minnesota Fats." Aslowish rock instrumental with thelimelight reserved for a solo sax.
Mood is sombre and I suspect thatthe lack of at least some melody isgoing to prove a handicap at this

Chubby Checkerturns to Limbo
FROM the first batch of Cameo -Parkwayreleases featuring Chubby Checker with
" Limbo Rock." The Limbo, you mayremember, is a West Indian dance that involveswriggling under a long horizontal pole thatgets loner and lower.
But just forget the pole and you'll be able tojive contentedly to this cheerful tune that is quitea departure from Chubby's usual material.
Coupling is " Popeye The Hitch-hiker and in this one Chubby getsfirmly back on the twist track.... By KEITH

time, with melody so much morein demand.
Flipside of this London release is" Come On Train," much faster andmore entertaining but still toorepetitious.
PATTI LYNNThe new one on Fontana from
Patti Lynn has the topical title of" Tell Me Telstar."
A slow one, which Patti self -duetsin dreamy mood, is sentimental andperhaps a shade over -pretty.
Those currently bitten by the love -bug will wallow in it. " Big, BigLove " is a brighter number with arhythmic beat which is pleasantenough but doesn't succeed in gettingout of the ordinary.
THIS COULD MAKETHE CHARTS
nANKESCHOEN - BITTESCHOEN-WIEDERSEHN
(get that mouthful !) is sung byEddie Wilson on Oriole, turnsout to be a country-and-western(Germany !) number with strongTyrolean influence.
To be serious, c -and -w fansviii enjoy it and pop fans willInd it both entertaining and'musing.
Do listen to this because it isunusual enough to have an out-side chance of making the charts.
And it's a must for " Two -Way.;'amily Favourites " !
The flip -side is " RhinelanderWaltz," a title that suggests.7rankfurt and Vienna, but which.s in fact pure Nashville, Ten-nessee.
BUDDY GRECOOn the Columbia label Buddy
Greco comes up with " Mr. Lonely."A slow hallad with a most appealingmelody and an ear -catching arrange-ment that features a rippling pianostyle.
The song is commercial withoutbeing corny and given enoughairings could go plates.Penned by Buddy himself. " Senti-
mental Fool " is another ballad, butwarm and easy flowing with a lightrhythm in the background.
Those who associate Buddy's namewith swinging type numbers will geta pleasant surprise at his skill as aballadeer.
RICHARD CHAMBERLAINTwo very big hits of last year are
sung on MGM by Richard Chamber-lain. His enormous popularity willdoubtless help him overcome whatone might call the audacity of reviv-ing Presley's " Love Me "I'ender."
Richard sings this song inpleasant, light, romantic vein-infact he makes a very good job of it.On the other side there's a bright,
swinging treatment of " All I Do IsDream Of You."
Top marks for the backing, directedby Jimmie Haskell.
LITA ROZA
Making her return to records. thistime on the Ember label, is LitaRoza. She sings a John D. Louder-milk composition He's My Dream -boat."
Slow rhythm and blues, not a verygood song, but Lita with her cus-tomary skill, makes it sound muchbetter than it is.
" Mama, He Treats YourDaughter Mean," is brighter andbetter in every way.A really lively, punchy ditty with
a rock -twist rhythm that gives Litaa chance to let fly and really enjoyherself.
PATSY CLINE
" Heartaches " is a good old oldiebrought brightly up to date by PatsyCline on Brunswick.
Patsy deserves to make the gradewith this one. " Why Can't He BeYou " is a slow, romantic ditty.roughly the female equivalent toPresley's " She's Not You."
DOUG SHELDON
Title song from the film " LiveNow, Pay Later " has been recordedon Decca by Doug Sheldon, a tough.growling song that comes off well.
The coupling has the brief title of" Me," a twist number with a teen-age lyric and a fair pace.
* POTTED POPSEDDIE CALVF-RT (Columbia) plays
" Celia," a most catchy melody with abright, toe -tapping rhythm-well wortha listen. " As Long As I Have You "is a pleasant, easy-going, romanticmelody.
THE COUNTRYMEN (Piccadilly)make a nice Job of the ever -popular" Scarlet Ribbons." Flip is one ofthe least -heard numbers from " StopThe World," " Melliaki Meilchik "which means " litle boy." This attrac-
tive song, only slightly in Russianmood, is treated in the lullaby style.
CHARLES BLACKWELL and hisOrchestra (Columbia) have revived" Freight Train," but If you rememberthe McDevitt hit version of '57, you'llhardly recognise It as the same tune.No harm done because this Is a bright, rhythmical and Imaginative arrange-ment. " Death Valley " Is a gallopingpaced western that holds the attentionright through.

The album Is of re-cordings made from 1927 to 1933by the man who was called theBlue Yodeller. Except for therecording technique being a bitharsh on the ears, the songs andthe backing are just as acceptabletoday as they were then. NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS Friday. October 26. 19628
CHRIS HUTCHINS reports -
Little Richard keeps 'em guessing!THIS week sees the end of Little Richard's first -ever tour of Britain and
the question is " will his return to show business be permanent "In the second week of November he returns to Britain, but even at this late
stage it is not known whether Richard is coming for a week of rock 'n' roll orGospel concerts.
Little Richard's current toter has been marked by incidents reminiscent of thosewitnessed at the birth of rock 'n' roll eight years ago. At Bristol, two people were treatedin hospital after dozens of fans stormed the stage during Richard's act ; at Slough anattendant was injured when another crowd made attempts to reach the rock 'n' roller ;
and at Wal'thamstow on Sunday, police with dogs were sent onto the stage after Richard'sperformance to clear the theatre of fans who chanted " more " for half an hour andrefused to budge till they got it.
I met him again in London at the weekend. Richard, calmly detached from thescenes that followed his act less than an hour earlier, told me over a late dinner : "I loveto see those fans go wild but I'm sorry to see anybody get hurt. I've sent that injuredattendant in Slough my address ; I hope he writes to me."
Why, then, does he incite such scenes with a dash into the audience that puts everyoneon their feet and sends hundreds into the aisles, each hopeful of being the partner he willjive with ? " I told you when I mint here, I'm electrifying I There ain't no one who canstop Little Richard once he goes out there. I've had other entertainers try and keep upwith me on the same stage, but none of Chem has lasted more than half my act.
" That's how I get rid of impeasonators! "The vital queatilon : Will Little Richard make a return rock 'n' roll tour of Britain
for promoter Don Arden in 1963 ?He answered that one this way :
" You asked me before I went onstage at Doncaster whether I wasgoing to sing rock or Gospel.told you I didn't know. Quitehonestly I don't know whether Ishall ever sing rock in Britain again.
" In America I'm known as thenation's soul singer. I have nothingagainst rock 'n' roll but I want tobecome a great Gospel singer-likeMahalia Jackson . . . only bigger."
Next week he goes to Germanyand then he gets back here for that

LITTLE RICHARD and SAM COOKE.second visit-the one with the un-decided nature. After that Richardsays he is going home to rest. Heis tired he misses his wife.
After Christmas ? Richard re-vealed to me : " In January Istart a film of my life story inHollywood. It's going to tellevery thing from when I was ababy right up to include thiscurrent tour." Some of the biggest stars who
have worked with me will be takingpart. We are going to tell every-thing."
And the tour in March ? " I likethe idea of a tour here with GeneVincent. I've had a wonderful timehere-but I'll have to think a lotabout that rock tour.
" When I've finished the film, I
am going to Australia for a Gospeltour. Australia was where I lastsang rock . . . five years ago."
Little Richard is not an easy starto fathom. He specialises in spring-ing the unexpected and much of histime is spent in silent thought.
But I think he has enjoyed this
Sonor sensation in sound
SONOR DRUMS are designed by Germany's leading manufacturers, built by experienced craftsmen
and played by many of Europe's best drummers. In America, Connie Kay of the M.J.Q. hasbeen using them for years; in Britain, Bobby Kevin relies on the high standards of Sonor, ThisIs their strength, the backing of experience that has launched Sonor successfully in this
country in only a few months. Many are the Sonor features that make these drums sensational. Go and see them at yourdealers, or write now for a catalogue describing in full, Britain's newest drum kits.

tour-even though he says it hasbeen no great' excitement to sing allhis big hits again. He came herewith his hair flattened down in thestyle he adopted as organist in achurch off New York's TimesSquare.
But he has spent a lot of timecombing it back up into thefashion with which he becamefamous. This tour has certainly marked a
revival, but of a different kind fromthat which Richard expected whenhe flew in three weeks ago. He'sbecome a rocker again-and foundhe's lost none of his power overhis audiences.
as Sam Cooke dreamsup a song in London
SAM COOKE couldn't sleep the other Sunday night. Nowthat's surprising, since he has slept well most every night
since he has been here, and the beds in the Mayfair Hotel-where he has a suite-are sufficiently sleep -inducing to calmthe most chronic insomnia sufferers into rest.
But Sam twisted the night awayin his bed and spent much of itlooking down on London fromhis window.
The result ? This may he thelongest -shot prophecy ever but with-out even having heard the song Iforecast Mr. Cooke's sleepless nightto bring forth a hit-because hedreamed himself up a song.
Monday was spent writing it downand when I called Sam that eveninghe was going over the rough productwith his manager, Roy Crain.
It was in much the same circum-stances that he wrote " Twistin' TheNight Away." The song took himway up the charts and caused morethan one sleepless night in itscreation.

FRANK IFIELD (se st:ris) GETS ROYAL SHOWJUST three days to go to the outstanding event of the show
business year-the Royal Variety Performance. Andexcitement is beginning to mount to fever pitch among theselected artists.
In a bill noteworthy for itsreluctance to accept pop music aspredominant feature of today'sentertainment scene, Frank !fieldmust surely be accepted as theartist most worthy of specialacclaim-on the strength of hisinternational recognition with "I'llRemember You."
Undoubtedly the reputation whichhe has built up abroad has contri-buted immensely to his selection forthis show. There can be no argumentthat he thoroughly deserves hishonour as the performer who hascontributed so much to the raising ofBritish prestige during 1962.
Frank was very excited aboutappearing in this unique event, when I spoke to him earlier thisweek. " The all-time big 111110MCD,in my career," was how hedescribed it to me.From the etiquette point of view.
he wouldn't tell me what he will singfor the Queen. But I'm sure he willtreat her to his famous interpretationof "I Remember You," plus his newbig hit " Lovesick Blues." And iftime permits, he could even burstinto one of his yodelling specialities.like on the other side of his newrelease
The choice of Cliff Richard andthe Shadows is also extremely wellmerited, and t feel they have aspiredto this honour on the strength oftheir world-wide success with thefilm and disc of " The Young Ones."
In a way, it is hard luck on theboys that they are obliged to inter-rupt their American tour to returnhome for this occasion-but I amsure they all consider it well worthwhile.
After all, this is no new procedurefor Cliff-for didn't he break hisAmerican visit to appear at the NMEPoll -Winners' Concert a couple ofyears ago?
I do feel, though, that bearing inmind the important role played bypop music in show business today, afew more of its representatives mighthave been selected for next Monday'sevent. Possibly the system by whichartists are chosen-namely, by a fewof London's leading agents on anannual rota-needs overhauling.

I'm certain that ifthe Queen were to pick the bill, which she doesn't, she would be onlytoo anxious to see a few new facesevery year.
However, the inspiration whichprompted the selection of the Blackand White Minstrels is faultless. VotedBritain's top TV show at Montreux lastyear, and now packing in the cashcustomers at the Victoria Palace twicenightly, George Mitchell's merry mendeserve every shred of praise.
Neither will anyone quarrel with thechoice of Cleo Loins and the JohnnyDankwort h Orchestra. For although

their selection conies more under theheading of " modern jazz " than " popmusic," this Is a long overdue honour.
I hope that, for this event, Johnnysticks to his more commercial andspectacular material-as he did for theFrank Sinatra concerts in the spring.
And there will doubtless be aspecial round of applause for thepopular Mrs. Da nkworth (Cleo, ofcourse), who thereafter will beretiring from the public eye for awhile, in order to have her baby illthe New Year. With his 39 -film series, " Broadway

Johnny Tillotsonmakes come -back
ALMOST two years ago, Johnny Tillotson wasmaking his British chart debut with Poetry
In Motion," which subsequently got to No. 1 hereafter a tough struggle with Elvis Presley's " It'sNow Or Never." Said the cynics : " Ah yes, butwhat will happen to his follow-up record. Will itdo as well ? "
As it happens, the cynics were right. The follow-up."Jimmy's Girl," didn't make the charts and little morehas been heard of Johnny from the day his recorddisappeared from the lists until last month, when a battleroyal started over "Send Me The Pillow You DreamOn," a song with four versions currently issued.
What has been happening to 23 -year -old Johnny since welast heard from hint ? His activities in the singing world have
been severely curtailed, becauseUncle Sam beckoned and Johnnyfound himself fitted up in a U.S.Army uniform !
This " engagement " lasted a year." One of the lowest -paid, but longestcommitments of my career," grinnedJohnny, when he was safely de-mobbed and out of reach of thenearest hairy sergeant. He franklyadmitted, though, that he hadbenefited physically by 365 toughdays in the Army.
I decided that right from thestart, I'd just be an ordinary guy inthe Army and not stick my neckout," said Johnny. " The trouble is,if you're an entertainer and youspeak out against discipline or somepetty rule, people immediately thinkyou can't take the life. I just kept mymouth shut."
Johnny didn't even play any en-gagements during his leaves, becausehe was so anxious to be accepted byhis fellow recruits as a normal boy-next -door type. Instead, he just wenthome to Jacksonville, Florida, to seehis family-a youthful mum and dadand brothers Danny (18) and Tommy(16).

well -deserved tribute.Andy Stewart is no newcomer to this
occasion, though he tells me thatnerves and tension show no sign ofdecreasing after the first Royal Per-formance. Here again, we might wellpoint to international triumphs as abasic reason for selection.
Harry Secombe flies home from hisholiday in Mexico to appear in theshow, and other singing comedianslisted in the line-up include NormanVaughan and Dickie Henderson.
The usual American contingent hasbeen picked-and so far as music isconcerned, that means RosemaryClooney, Earths Kitt and SophieTucker.
Rosemary is the only American whowill actually be flying in from theStates for this event-the pthers willconveniently be fulfilling engagementsclose at hand.
Eartha interrupts a series of concertsin Scandinavia for the Royal VarietyShow. By the way, a little birdwhispers to me that, among the songsshe has selected to perform for HerMajesty are "Do It Again" and "LaDolce Vita."
Sophie Tucker has not appeared inthis event for over 25 years, and nowshe returns in triumph. A nostalgicchoice, I feel-perhaps tempered bythe desire to include an artist whoseseniority (in the absence of BudFlanagan or Maurice Chevalier)enables her to address Royalty direct.
There is clearly more than enoughtalent in next Monday's bill to make ita very entertaining evening-for thelucky ones in the theatre and for thosewatching on TV the following Sunday. Our very best wishes go to all thosetaking part. DEREK JOHNSON.

JOHNNY TILLOTSON during his Armydays enjoyed the NME every week.
The arrival of a country-and-westernpackage to Jacksonville some years 860caused great excitement-and Johnnymade sure he got his tickets well Inadvance Like everyone else who sawthe show, Johnny was enthralled by ayoung singer, completely unknown atthat time, who was the sensation ofthe evening.
The young man's name ? ElvisPresley ! After seeing Elvis perform,Johnny decided to pursue a singingcareer in earnest. The nearest he hadcome to show business in the past wasplaying his father's guitar on localradio and TV shows, and leading hisown group while at the University ofFlorida.
The rest is history. During thesummer of 1957, Johnny entered anational talent contest and although hedidn't win, his entry was heard, withinterest, by Cadence Records chiefArchie Breyer, who offered him acontract.
He has had five successive big sellersIn the States-"True True Happiness,""Why Do I Love You So ?", "EarthAngel," "Poetry In Motion," "Jimmy'sGirl" and now his current disc is do-ing well on both sides of the Atlantic.
His new entry was penned by famouscountry-and-western star Hank Locklinand has also been recorded in Britainby Russ Sainty, Frank Kelly andMarty Wilde. MIKE HELLICAIL

ADAM FAITH'S " Don'tThat Beat All " enters its
tenth week in the NME Charttoday (Friday), as he com-mences his tour of NewZealand and Australia. Butthere were no wild celebra-tions at his £30,000 home inEsher, Surrey, before he left.Adam takes his success grate-fully . . . . but quietly.
"I suppose I don't live it upthat much," he told me as wewalked through the gardens, cutoff from the road by tall hedges."I don't get the time. And apartfrom that, I live alone."
I raised my eye -brows. " It's abig house. There's no one else hereat all ? "
" Well, it's not that bad," he saidsimply. "I have a couple to cookmy meals and clean the house, andthey look after me well. Then Ihave visitors: people like Lonnie andDon Arrol. They come down fora gpame of snooker.
" I've been here about five monthsnow. With working, though, Ihaven't been able to have muchdone to the place. So I hope you'llexcuse the bits and pieces here andthere."
We stood on the door -step,facing the heavy -panelled frontdoor, and he tugged the bell. "show you around," he grinned," but you've had fair warning !"Inside, the house was tastefully
appointed, a combination of periodand contemporary furniture. Onlythe occasional missing light -bulbindicated that all is not complete. In the living room, soft cushionspadded every chair and a slim -line

In the corner was Adam's record-player . . . alongside a big collectionof discs including Joe Brown's album" Picture Of You " and " GeorgeShearing -Peggy Lee " LP. Next tothem was the sheet music of " SomePeople."
Said Adam: " Most of the houseis still as it was when I took it overfive months ago. But I've had therooms redecorated. Some of theideas were mine, and my brotherDenis added others."
We moved across deep fittedcarpets to the stairway in the hall." It's most noticeable upstairs, wherewe've done most of the rooms inpastel colours. I haven't changedthe bathroom much "-he opened thedoor-" but that 'bar is handy forexercising on."
Above our heads was a metalrail for his early morning keep -fitroutine." In my bedroom "-he pushed the
door to reveal a simply decorated.elegant room overlooking the garden-" I'm trying to make one or twoimprovements, such as a pelmet overthe bed. I think it should lookpretty good once it's finished."
Along the corridor, Adam showedme the office he's had made fromone of the five bedrooms. " It'svery handy for my work-when Iget the time," he smiled. It wasan orderly little room in which hehad a desk, a book cabinet and

room, furnished in a different stylefrom most other parts of the house.and out to see the garage.
At least, it looked like a garage." Just wait till you see this, cock,"said Adam, beaming proudly as heled me into a plush, centrally heatedsnooker room. Where most house-holders would store their gardentools was a heavy green carpet, bordered by cushioned seats alongeach wall. And curtains coveredthe windows behind which he andLonnie Donegan often battle it outover the cues.
" If needs be it can Kt convertedback into .a garage within a day,"he went on, " though I don't needit for my car at the moment. I'mtoo lazy: I just leave it outside.Anyway, it's bust !"
Adam lives well, unquestionably, but he's modest about his successand the luxuries it's brought him. There's no doubt he works hard
for them-and, if he'll pardon mefor saying so, perhaps a little toohard. It may seem only natural thathe's beginning to show signs ofstrain after the endless round ofTV, films, radio, overseas tours andone-night stands.

We sat down by the snooker tablefor a rest and I took the opportunityto ask Adam how long he intendsto continue in show business.
" Oh, I'll just carry on," he toldme. " I don't intend to retire early,or anything like that. In fact, Iwant to develop myself as I go along.
" I'm still as keen to continue asa dramatic actor. Films like 'MixMe A Person ' were disappointing,I know, but I haven't let it put meoff. I think it's just a matter offinding the right script.
" Still, I'm not keen on a heavyrole for my next film. I think it'sabout time I did a comedy musicalin colour, or something like that.Something with plenty of sparkle, plenty of songs. It would be nextyear.
" TV ? Well, I don't plan anotherseries just yet. I think it'll just beodd appearances for the present. And I have another pantomimecoming up this Christmas."
Re told me he was recording hisRest single before he left, and added:
I'm not sure what it's going to beyet, or how we're going to treat it.These things are lust worked outin the studio.
" It was the same with Don'tThat Beat All.' We don't work toa set plan, we just follow an ideaand see how it goes. Johnny Keat-ing told Johnny Worth the kind ofnumber we were after, and we wenton from there.
