I’m often asked by members and non-members alike, “Are you enjoying this job?” Well, the answer is a resounding yes! Even on the days when I’m not smiling, and there are those days, I’m still struck by how engaged the East Metro business community is in demanding excellence from their Chamber and in expecting great results from their communities.

But what does that mean? When I tell someone that we have engaged members I often get a shake of the head, as if to say “Well, duh!” Every Chamber expects engaged members, so are we really any di erent? Do we have a special sauce that somehow sets us apart?

If I had to de ne our special sauce I’d tell you that our members simply have higher expectations. ey join the Chamber for all the regular reasons, networking,

great events, a sense of civic engagement; but they also expect that their Chamber, and they really mean “theirs,” will work for the business community across all our civic partners. eir expectations start with a Chamber working as hard as it can, every day, for the success of its members and end with the demand that we engage our civic partners in recognizing the contributions of the business community and involving us, asking our opinion, on the conduct of business in the community.

Our members don’t just show up at meetings, they call us, they write us, and they are not shy about asking why we are, or are not, doing something. I’ve been struck by how many members, when downtown on business, simply stop into the Chamber to say hello and in the

time honored tradition of the East Metro, take a minute to tell us what we should be working on.

I wouldn’t have it any other way. Any business owner will tell you that the most dangerous customer is not the one who complains all the time, it is the customer who doesn’t say a word right up until the point they walk out of your business, never to return. I want our members to expect more. I want our members to ask us why, and why not. If our members are quiet I don’t take it as we are doing a great job, I simply take it as our members are taking a collective deep breath before launching into the next dialogue.

When you read Nexus, when you skim through Friday Facts, I hope you feel the emotion we put into every word. is is your Chamber, and if you aren’t satis ed than we aren’t satis ed. ank you for letting me be part of this great Chamber.

PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE

NEXUS | Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce4

For new and existing Chamber members who may not know much about the rich history of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce, consider this article a lesson in ‘Chamber History 101.’

Imagine your Chamber in its very beginning with just 167 members, during a time when typewriters and telephones represented cutting edge innovation, railroads were up and coming in Saint Paul, and the second Industrial Revolution was well underway.

From railroads and streetcars to current day high speed rail initiatives; from snail mail marketing to social media campaigns; from membership Blitz Day to the 50X2 campaign, Chamber history tends to repeat itself and give new insight into some of today’s pressing issues. Today, the Saint Paul

Area Chamber of Commerce is stronger than ever with the collective in uence of over 1,200 members.

Some may remember it as the Saint Paul Association of Commerce or the Association of Business and Public A airs. Regardless of name changes, the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce still serves many of its original members including the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Hamline University, Burlington Northern, MN State Fair, Saint Paul YMCA, Travelers, and Moore Costello and Hart P.L.L.P. e Chamber also serves other long time xtures in the Saint Paul area including the University of St. omas, Macalester College, Bethel College, Briggs and Morgan, Securian, 3M, and Town and Country Club.

Historical Milestones

Before Twitter and Facebook, cable television or smart phones, there was radio. In April of 1926, Chamber member WCCO Broadcasting entertained Chamber members and sta at an Open Forum Luncheon held at the Saint Paul Athletic Club. Discussions included radio legislation as it related to citizens of Saint Paul and other radio-related topics. Shortly after, WCCO rolled out Saint Paul Community Radio Hour, which played weekly dinner hour concerts featuring Saint Paul orchestras and soloists.

1960 marked a particularly productive year for the Chamber with a spring membership drive called Blitz Day. e program managed to increase membership by nearly 50 percent (503 new members) and raised $74,000 in just one

day! e money raised was invested back into Saint Paul through the creation of new services and programs, one of which was the creation of the Better Business Bureau. e bureau was launched to “curb and eliminate frauds, rackets and unwanted solicitations and to act as a watch-dog

of unethical advertising practices.” It has since separated from the Chamber and remains one of the best known institutions today.

Also in 1960, long time competitors the Saint Paul and Minneapolis Chambers decided to “bury the hatchet” at the Town and Country Club. Today, the two Chambers continue to work together and partner on several events, including the annual Twins Luncheon.
