When you are heads down, running your business, you don’t necessarily have the time to talk about the business challenges you may have. The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce created Grow Minnesota several years ago as a way for chambers throughout the state to visit with their members, record the data from the conversations in one database, and then use that information to discover trends that affect businesses statewide.

The Saint Paul Area Chamber has been an active member of the Grow Minnesota team for some time. In 2010, we completed over 150 Grow Minnesota visits with our members. Each visit is a chance to learn more about a business, learn what the business challenges may be, and in many cases, bring new resources to the table to help address those challenges.

In 2011, we plan to make 200 visits among our members. Why the increase? Because Grow Minnesota isn’t just an interesting program, it is a great way for us to learn more about our members. When we learn your business, we become even better at connecting the dots between

members who can help each other or with other government or non-profit programs that can be of assistance. Each visit is unique, but all have a common goal of helping our members become more successful.

You can learn more about the Grow Minnesota program by visiting the Minnesota Chamber web site at: http://www.mnchamber.com/research_economy/publications.cfm.

And if you’d like to request a Grow Minnesota visit from us, just give us a call. We’d love to come out. Track our progress in Friday Facts where each Friday we will be reporting on how many visits we have made and how many more we have to go. The competition here at the Chamber to make the most visits is intense, which befits a program directed at fostering the intense drive to success that our members show each and every day.

In 1963, Ralph J. Roberts purchased a 1,200-subscriber cable

television system in Tupelo, Mississippi. The rest, as they say,

is history. Comcast has come a long way from its humble

beginnings. In fact, founder Ralph Roberts’ signature style—a

bow-tie—has evolved into a company emblem for Comcast

employees around the country.

Today Comcast serves 22.9 million customers and employs

about 107,000 people across the United States. In the Twin

Cities and western Wisconsin alone the company employs

nearly 1,900 workers and serves more than 100 communities.

In 2008, Comcast launched Comcast Business Class, a

comprehensive suite of internet, phone and video services

designed to meet the needs of the small- to medium-sized

business community. The services include a variety of

features; for example, Comcast Business Class Internet

offers a variety of packages with speeds up to 100 Mbps,

advanced security features, 24/7 business-class support, and

Microsoft communication services.

One of the key features of Comcast Business Class is its

affordability, enabling accessibility to leading-edge services

that otherwise may not be available to smaller businesses.

“Providing connectivity and accessibility improves value to

small businesses and medium enterprises, giving them the

same robust services enjoyed by larger companies,” said

Jeff Parris, Vice President of Business Services for

Comcast’s Twin Cities Region.

Community Presence

Comcast’s impressive investment in the local community goes

beyond high-speed fiber optics. Since arriving in the Twin

Cities in 2002, Comcast has partnered with a wide range of

community organizations to help make our area an even better

place to live, work and play.

“We actively encourage employees to become engaged in

their communities,” said Mary Beth Schubert, Regional Vice

President of Corporate Affairs. “For example, every other

Friday a group from our Business Services team sets aside time

to volunteer at the Salvation Army helping serve breakfast and

cleaning after meals.”

Another popular community service program—Comcast

Cares Day—brings together tens of thousands of Comcast

employees, their families and friends to make a positive impact

in neighborhoods across the country. “Last Spring, we saw

nearly 1,400 Comcast employees volunteer in the Twin Cities

alone during this nationwide day of volunteering,” said

Dave Nyberg, Senior Corporate Affairs Manager, Comcast,

Saint Paul.

“ Comcast employees are motivated and openly engaged with the local community, which is reflective in our office atmosphere and customer-valued approach.” Mary Beth Schubert

commendable. Recently, Comcast earned merit for its value-

rich work environment when it earned “Best Places to Work”

recognition for the fifth year in a row by the Minneapolis/

St. Paul Business Journal as well as “Top Work Places 2010”

honors by the StarTribune.

What the Future Holds...

At the heart of Comcast’s values lies the customer. As the cable

and internet industry grows more complex and the marketplace

evolves, the solution is simple: Be there for the customer and

remain ahead of the curve.

“We are in the age of convergence and this industry is ever-

changing,” said Parris. “In both the commercial and residential

markets, we will continue to be the thought leaders and the

product development leaders when it comes to meetings our

customers’ needs.”

Nearly 1,400 Twin Cities Comcast employees volunteered at over 30 project sites during Comcast Cares Day 2010. Above: Comcasters help stock the food shelf at Community Action Council’s Lewis House in Eagan.

Complimentary television and internet service alone makes

Comcast seem like an appealing place to work, but it’s the

Your Chamber and Moore, Costello & Hart partnered in early 2005 to create a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

President of Linder’s Garden Center David A. Linder accepted a Celebrate Business Success award at the Chamber’s January Social Reception, which was held at Buca di Beppo’s Saint Paul location. The third-generation, family-owned business was honored with the award for its passion and long-standing investment in the Saint Paul community for over 100 years.
