School Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects. Staff Development Day
Last Saturday the Westlawn school staff attended a
Staff Development Day focussed on writing. We had
training in an innovative program called ‘Big Write’
which will be used across the whole school in all
grades K-6. It complements what teachers are
already doing in classrooms and motivates students
to raise the standard of their writing and to have fun
with the writing process.
Next week we are launching our Westlawn Public
School Facebook page. We need your support in
returning permission notes, which were sent home
last Friday to enable us to publish your child’s name
and image on the facebook page. We would really
appreciate notes returned by Friday 16th February so
we have this updated information.

Lunches We have noticed some children bringing tuna, baked beans and a variety of other foods in tins with a ring pull top. The lids are quite sharp and can easily cause an injury and are also difficult for children to open. For safety reasons these tins should not be sent to school. A suggestion is that the delicious contents could be put into a plastic container for students to enjoy. Thank you for your understanding. P&C Our first P&C and Canteen Meeting was last Wednesday and it was great to see so many parents
attend. The meetings are held in our school’s ‘Meeting Room’ which is near the canteen. Our P&C AGM will be next month, on Wednesday 14th March in the Meeting Room. All positions including P&C executive or any sub-committees such as the Canteen committee are voted on at the AGM. Just a reminder that according to NSW P&C Federation guidelines, those wishing to vote, stand for office, or move motions, must be financial members. Membership is $1 per year. Payment of the membership fee must be made by the close of one meeting so that the member is eligible to exercise membership rights at the next meeting. Uniforms Our uniforms are only sold through U-Design in
North St, Grafton. Opening hours are Monday
10:00am-2:00pm, Thursday 2:30-6:00pm, Saturday
9:00am-1:00pm. School hats and library bags are
$10:00 each and are sold at the school office.
Reminders Sight Word Program Westlawn PS has a very successful Sight Word Program which is run by volunteers. We need a team of parents/community members, who would like to do the Sight Word Program. We need volunteers to work in classrooms K-2. If you have helped in the past or want to do it for the first time, please come along to a training session on Thursday 15th February at 9:15am. Even if your children are older but you still want to be involved, we would love to have your help. Mrs Acevedo-White will run the session. It will be held in the reading room in the library. Please advise the school office if you are interested in attending.
Parent Information Meetings Parents and carers are invited to their child’s Parent Information Meeting. A lot of useful information about the year ahead will be provided. It is not the appropriate forum to discuss individual student progress so if you wish to discuss your child please make an appointment with the class teacher for a mutually convenient time. Most meetings will last approximately one hour.
Emergency Contact Details We often need to contact parents for a range of reasons. Please make sure that the school office is notified about:
Change of home address
Change of home phone
Change of mobile number
Change of emergency contact/s and their details, change of email address (for Newsletters)
We care excited by the new look of our Newsletter
and after experimenting with different ideas will be
keeping this format for Term 1.

This week in the library: Loving Library Day
Wednesday 14th February 2018
We are excited to be celebrating Loving Library
Day. Our monitors have chosen some of their
favourite books to be wrapped and be borrowed
blindly on Wednesday. Teachers have shared
some of their all time favourite children books
for display. Everyone can come and make a
book mark to use as they share their love of
reading. You might like to write a letter to us
letting us know what you love about the library.
Drop these into the treasure chest on the front
desk.
Good news! Our library now subscribes to the
following award-winning World Book Web products.
• World Book Kids—is based on World Book’s award-winning Discovery Encyclopedia and is designed to give younger students, ESL students and reluctant readers a rewarding online learning experience. The site illustrations, diagrams and maps enrich more than 2,000 articles selected for appeal and relevance.

Canteen News
Our canteen manager Michelle Ford
has decided to step down from her
role as Westlawn Canteen Manager,
as she will be returning to work.
If there is anyone who may be interested
in taking over as Canteen Manager please
speak to any of the P& C Executive,
Michelle Ford or the Westlawn office
ladies. Michelle has done a fantastic job
during the last few months and we thank
all the volunteers who have joined the
canteen roster. Our canteen plays a vital
role at Westlawn in providing nutritious
and affordable lunches. All money raised
through the canteen goes towards the
purchase of valuable school resources for
students.
Unfortunately if a new Manager cannot be
found there will be no alternative but to
close our canteen.
For all enquiries relating to the canteen
roster please call 0416808614 to speak to
our canteen manager Michelle Ford.
