NEWSLETTER ~ TERM 3 - No. 5 ~ 24 August 2017 FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK—Aaron Richards CONGRATULATIONS - CANTAMATH TEAM I attended the Cantamath competition last night along with Mrs Verweij, Mr Scully, Mr McGuire and many parents to support the two school Cantamath teams. It was a very exciting event with lots of suspense as the teams worked through the problem solving questions. Both St Joseph’s teams performed admirably in the adrenalin filled environment. A great effort by: the Year 8 teamConor Fyall, Jonty Blacklow, Megan Townshend, Siyun Lee, Caitlin Andrews and Jiyun Han. Year 7 team — Isaac Jones, Tim Avery, Angus Nevin, Ryan Wilson, Sam Woodgate and Finn O’Donnell. MERCY DAY The school will celebrate Mercy Day on the 22 September. This is an opportunity for the school to acknowledge the service the Mercy sisters provided our school, our parish and our community over the years. It also provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the charism of the venerable Catherine McAuley who was the founder of the Sisters of Mercy. More details regarding Mercy Day will follow at a later date. MUFTI-DAY - TOMORROW The school is running a mufti day, tomorrow to support the School Fashion show. We kindly request that each family donate a luxury item for a raffle. No alcohol please. The school and PTA appreciate your support for this event. SCHOOL SPEECH COMPETITION Over the last couple of weeks I have popped into the school hall to listen to the speeches presented by the Middle and Senior School, as well as Poetry from the Junior Middle School. It was great to see all the children stepping up and giving it their best. The teachers commented to me that students’ confidence with public speaking has grown this year. This is a great achievement that needs to be acknowledged. Public speaking is one of those necessary evils in life. Not many of us actually like standing in front of a crowd but it is something that we have to do as part of our job. I believe that providing this opportunity at primary school instills the belief that we can do it if we have to. It is my hope that this belief will help children step up to the challenge as it arises later in life. Next week the school will celebrate this learning opportunity at the school’s Speech and Poetry finals. The names and order of the evening is detailed on the following page. This is not a competitive event but rather an opportunity for a number of our finalists to demonstrate their skill to our wider community. The event will also provide our Year 5-8 finalists the opportunity to practise at a public event before they compete in the Rotary Speech competition later this term. HELP WANTED We have a couple of small metal or woodwork tasks we need completed at school. We are looking for a parent or grandparent who is a welder or cabinetmaker who has some time to help us out. If you can please contact the office. ASHBY 1 Since the end of last term we have welcomed seven New Entrants to Ashby 1. Caleb, Charlie, Gabriele, Novia, Pippa, Thomas, and Van have all adjusted well to school life.
