Newsletter 14/2016 Week 5 Term 3 24 August 2016 Dear Parents and Caregivers of Baverstock Oaks School Here we are half way Term 3 and 2016 is slipping away quickly. The Olympics is progressing and hearing our children talking about it on many levels around the school tells me many of them are following our NZ athletes. Late last week we had a very scary incident on Baverstock Rd just before 8am. A Mum was crossing the road with two preschoolers heading for Edukids when a driver raced through the area and narrowly missed the family, clipping one small boy’s foot. He was travelling at speed and failed to stop. Please talk to your family members about driving SLOWLY around schools and also know that our crossings are KEA crossings that are only a legal crossing when they are patrolled with signs. DO NOT EXPECT CARS TO STOP. A very scary way to start the day. Thank goodness the outcome was not any worse. Lately we have had many of our students represent the school in sport, Mathex, dance, cheerleading and lots more. They have such commitment to represent our school so proudly, they display real sportsmanship in alignment with our core values and look to be having so much fun! It really is a JOY to witness. A HUGE thanks to the staff and parents who contribute their time and expertise so these teams can participate and succeed. It is a real privilege to have you all as part of our school family. More detailed reports later in the newsletter. We have had Korean students in our school on a study tour this term. They departed back home last week. These exchanges allow everyone to learn from each other and add another layer of learning here at Baverstock Oaks. We wish them safe travels as they head back to Korea. This is the time of the year where I am actively involved in the coming year. 2017 is already on many documents on my computer now and I start to muddle the years. It is amazing how quickly that time comes about. I have 1:1 interviews with all teachers this term to hear about their learning journey, their successes and challenges and what they are aspiring to. It is all so useful as we plan and strategize going forward. Some great ideas for implementation come from these conversations. The PPK (personal practical knowledge) inside each and every head within our school is the organisation’s greatest resource. I need to ‘mine’ it like gold. Parent Corner – Bad patches Having a bad patch with your child’s behaviour? Take a step back and get the wider view. A great phrase to remember is, “A child who feels right, acts right.” All children throw up a bit of spontaneous mischief but if you are consistently getting unpleasant, difficult behaviour, remind yourself, “A child who feels right, acts right.” Ask, “My child isn’t acting right, so why aren’t they feeling right?” Is this behaviour a symptom of not enough time and attention? Is there some disruption in their life? Are they getting enough sleep and fun? Is there some unhealthy influence from a friend? You don’t ignore the misbehaviour - you deal with it appropriately - but try and get the big picture of underlying causes. I hope you find these parenting corner tips useful. Often the simple little things can help the big things diminish. I hope you are having a great week. Mary Wilson PRINCIPAL

MATHEX at MHJC Last week I was fortunate to attend the area MATHEX competition at Mission Heights Junior College. We had 3 teams with 4 students in each. We are in the primary section and competing against Mission Heights Primary. Our three teams took out 1st, 2nd and 4th. A HUGE thanks to Nick Gibbs for his training of our teams. We are so proud of you all.

We have some amazing writers here at Baverstock Oaks. Take a read of this amazing piece from Zoe in Yr 4.

ROAD SAFETY After our incident this week I know many of you want to lobby council for a zebra crossing on Baverstock Rd and Erica Rd. This would certainly help as we have done this for sometime, however what would probably be more effective would be two speed bumps leading up to the crossing. Please support road safety and make your voice heard at Auckland Council. Thank you in anticipation.

Overdue School Books We are extremely lucky here at Baverstock to have such a fantastic library that the children get to enjoy. Classes come to visit once a week when they can issue and return library books. All library books are automatically issued for 14 days and should a student not have finished the book by then, it can be renewed. We have however, noticed that the number of students with overdue library books is increasing, some going back to being due in February.

Over due lists are regularly sent to classroom teachers for chasing up before we start following up with sending letters home. We are just trialing emailing parents instead as this is a lot more time and cost effective. Of course this only works if we have a correct email address. Please can you make sure you keep library books (and readers) safe when issued. It is important that children learn to take care of property whether it is staying in the classroom or going home. Thank you.

SPORTS CORNER

Baverstock Oaks Soccer team On a fine Friday last week, the Baverstock Soccer Team travelled to Elm Park for the final round robin game of the season. In an entertaining game we managed to score two goals. Sadly, on was an own goal, so the game finished at one all. We are waiting on other results to see if we have progressed to the knock out rounds. Fingers crossed Rugby: We have had a great season so far and our stats are fantastic BOS Rugby Round Robin Review - 7 Games Total for and against BOS v Opposition 296 40 Tries: Anya 10, Randall 9, Malachi 5, Josua 5, Liam 5, James 4, Caleb 4, Michael 3 (from one game) Netball Last week the J1 team played Owairoa at school. The team play extremely well and really worked together. They all worked hard on their defense, which resulted in a lot of intercepts. The shooters were on fire and moved so well in the circle to get free. It was a well-deserved final score of 15-10 to Baverstock. Mrs S was extremely proud of the team and their efforts. Saturday Netball On Saturday 20th August J2 had a netball game against Pohutukawa. Coach Alicia said the team played an amazing game and have really worked well as a team. The team had no subs for the day so each player had to play for the full 40 minutes. They have come an extremely long way since the start of the season and now sit high on the table in their flight. Well done team!

Dance Festival On 10 & 11 August we had two dance groups taking part in the local dance festival. They did an amazing job and along with the teachers who spent their time making sure they were so polished. It was a great evening – Well done

Room 16 Learning Room 16 has been learning how to conduct statistical investigations. We've been using the new dragonistic cards to

collect data. We ask questions about our dragon's attack damage, gender, attack method, age, and their height in metres. After this we graph the data and write a summary about what our data is showing us.

News from Lower F We had a fabulous time at our trip to Jump! We went on Tuesday 9 August. Room 27 and Room 28 went in the morning and Room 20, 25 and 26 went after morning tea. We bounced like bunnies, jumped like joeys and leapt like leopards. Thanks Miss Bonniface for organising this trip for us.

Lower C students have been having so much fun doing "Shared Big Book" activities by using different types of medium and techniques in Visual Arts to share their ideas.

Fun Friday!!!!! In Home Decor we have been making a letter decoration to hang on our bedroom doors. We used metallic paint to give it a shimmery look and then decorated them with lost shiny and furry things. Fun Friday with our Korean Students

On Friday Mrs McKechnie and Mrs Keenan worked with our Korean visitors for Fun Friday. They walked to Fruit World where they were able to practice using English to select and buy fruit. After walking back to school they chopped up the fruit and made their own fruit kebabs. It

looks like they all enjoyed this Kiwi experience.
