Principals Message - The School Values are RESPECT, EMPATHY, CONNECTING, INDEPENDENCE. So far this term we have had a focus on RESPECT and have been rewarding students for showing RESPECT both in and out of the classroom. Our students have a great understanding of this value and demonstrate RESPECT in the way they speak and in their actions. We are now having a focus on CONNECTING and encouraging students to connect with each other through kindness - a smile, a compliment, lending a hand and sharing. The rewards for CONNECTING are the positive (happy) emotions we feel when we do something considerate for someone else. I ask our parents/carers to catch their children being kind at home - helping (unasked) with a household chore, opening a door, doing the dishes, playing with a younger sibling.
There is a great deal of sickness going through the school at the moment. I would encourage parents and carers to keep sick children at home to stop the spread of infection. Could I also ask parents/carers to remind their children to wear their school jumper or jacket each day? The wind in the playground can be icy, especially in the morning and a jumper is really needed.

Sporting Schools is a $200 million Australian Government initiative designed to help schools to increase children’s participation in sport, and to connect them with community sporting opportunities. Research shows that an early connection to sport can positively influence participation and encourage a lifelong love of sport. Since Sporting Schools started in 2015, over 6,500 schools have received funding. This has given more than 3,461,000 participants the chance to get active, engaged and have fun while sampling a variety of different sports.
After applying for and being successful for a Sporting School grant I have organised a gymnastics program for KJ, K/1M, 1/2A, 2A and 2/3FH. The program started last week and all children had an enjoyable time. If your child is in one of the participating classes and they have not returned their gymnastics permission note could they please do so ASAP so they can participate in next Thursdays lesson. Miss Jasmine.

Book Week Parade PlayOn Monday 30th August KJ, K/1M and 1/2A walked to Wallsend Library to watch the Book Week Parade Play. The students were all very well behaved and enjoyed watching the play. Their favourite book from the play was Rodney Loses It by Michael Gerard Bauer and The Rabbit Chase by Freya Blackwood. Miss JasmineOn the 17th August, Stage 2 students made the long journey to Sydney to
attend Taronga Park Zoo to celebrate the Year of Science. Students were excited to see the sights of Sydney from the viewing platform. We saw both the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. We enjoyed seeing all of the reptiles, especially the large Komodo Dragon. We attended the Seal Show where the teachers let us sit in the splash zone. Murphy the seal was the best and Nate Dudgeon was lucky enough to shake his fin. We visited the penguins, the elephants and our favourites the meerkats. For lunch we were lucky enough to see the Bird Show. We were amazed as different types of birds swooped above our heads. We had a fantastic day and would like to thank everyone that attended. Miss Casey, Miss Jasmine and Miss Killeen.

Last Wednesday Plattsburg Public School celebrated NAIDOC 2018 Because of her we can. The day was fantastic with students and our school community celebrating the special females in our lives who care, nurture and empower us everyday with a beautiful tribute during our assembly and amazing performances from our own students and from Jesmond campus Callaghan College. A big shout out to Alex Nean for all his support and for organising the Jesmond students to help make our NAIDOC celebration a day to remember. Thanks to Miss Tian, Miss Casey, Dakota and Jerry the BBQ lunch including Bush Tucker tasting was a huge hit with our students. The afternoon provided the opportunity for students to take part in cultural activities and thank you to the teachers and students who participated in the Oz Tag playoff this really did top the day off.
Congratulations to all our students for the respect shown across the day. Miss Karen

Congratulations to the Remarkable Gladys Dent
The woman in the centre of the photo is our Granny, Gladys Dent. Because of her, Alison and Nathaniel Herbert (Plattsburg PS Students) understand the importance of helping others without receiving anything in return. Gladys has volunteered for the past 20 years with the Mater Auxiliary, she was President for several years then stepped down to Vice President. She was Newcastle’s citizen of the Year in 2011 and won another award last year. She was featured on NBN news after recently turning 100 years old. Regards, The Herbert Family.
(Transcript from NBN News) Cameras, crowds and a morning tea fit for royalty, Gladys Dent, a well known Queen of selflessness and charm, turned 100 this week. For 20 of those years she volunteers with the Mater Hospitals Cancer Carers Auxiliary. “If you can help people who can’t do things for themselves, it gives you a real kick, well it does me anyhow,” says Gladys. At 91 Gladys was elected President and after several years in the top job she stepped aside and took the position of Vice President. Her tireless efforts have inspired many others to give. Gladys’ generous heart has also earned her many accolades. Most recently two separate volunteer of the Year awards. Her biggest admirers are her 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Whilst Gladys has now stepped back from leading roles she’s not taking a back seat.
Happy 100th Birthday, Gladys.

Resolving Concerns
There may be occasions when concerns cause frustration and anxiety. At such times it is important to organise a time to talk with school staff in an unhurried, respectful and confidential atmosphere.
These guidelines aim to provide an appropriate procedure to deal with common concerns.
Please note: School social media message pages are not monitored regularly, and are therefore not an appropriate forum to raise a concern.
CONCERN APPROPRIATE ACTIONThe academic progress of your own child
• Directly contact the child’s teacher either by note, phone or make an appointment to discuss in person at an appropriate time
The wellbeing of your own child
• For minor issues, directly contact your child’s teacher to clarify information.
• For more serious concerns, contact office and arrange a suitable time to talk with class teacher.
• Please contact the office to convey information about change of address, telephone number, emergency contact, health issues, custody details etc.
Actions of other students
• Contact the class teacher for a classroom problem.• Contact the child’s teacher or principal for playground problems.
School procedures or practice
• Contact office and make an appointment to see the principal and/or appropriate member of staff.
Actions of a staff member
• Contact the Principal directly for an appointment.
Please note: No Parent/Carer is permitted to directly approach another person’s child. The school will deal with issues between students as part of the school Student Wellbeing procedures.
ALL SCHOOLS ARE PROTECTED BY THE INCLOSED LANDS PROTECTION ACT OF 1901 -Revised 31 July 2012
In very rare cases where people wishing to express concerns do so in an aggressive, threatening or violent manner, the Principal (or nominee) has the legal authority under the “Inclosed Lands Act” to:
• Direct the person to immediately leave the grounds. • Call the police to remove the person should he/she refuse. • Withdraw future permission (by letter) for the person to enter the grounds without permission
of the Principal. • Seek further legal avenues.
The Crimes Amendment (School Protection) Act can be applied if any offences under the act occur, such as harassment or intimidation of staff or students on school property or on entering or leaving school property.

Our whole school performance will take place on Tuesday the 25th of September from 5:30pm in the gully. All classes are performing a class item and all students will be involved in the whole school finale. The P&C will be running a BBQ, selling fairy floss and other snack foods on the night. We hope to see you there!

Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools. All you need to get started is a valid school email address. This software is available at no cost to all DoE students under our enterprise agreement.
To access go to: Students portal > Learning > Office 365Microsoft Office 2016 – may be installed on up to five computers and ten mobile devices. To install go to: Students portal > Learning > Office 365 > Install Office 2016
Students can also access additional free software for their devices from the students’ BYOD software website.
Graduation is coming quickly! Our students will be graduating on the evening of Monday 5th of November at the University of Newcastle. In order to graduate students must have 30 hours of registered learning. If your student does not have 30 hours yet, they need to see Mrs Brooks. All students will need to log their existing hours prior to September. Cut-off date for hours counted towards graduation is the 31st of August. Students after this date can still log hours for next year.
Parents and carers are advised that the Newcastle Council Rangers have been patrolling the school parking restrictions, and have issued quite a number of fines
to motorists in recent weeks. The school has no control over the restrictions, and all parking zones are determined by the council’s traffic control committee. Parents are encouraged to leave enough time to find a park before and after school to avoid a heavy fine or use the Kiss and Ride program. There is NO excuse for parking in a NO PARKING zone!
Just a reminder that Commonwealth school banking day is on every FRIDAY. Leave your bank book and money at the canteen in the morning. Thank you
Regular attendance at school is essential if students are to maximise their potential. Schools, in partnership with parents, are responsible for promoting the regular attendance of students. While parents are legally responsible for the regular attendance of their children, school staff as a part of their duty of care, monitor part or whole day absences. The law in NSW states that all children of compulsory school age (6-17 years) are required to attend school regularly. (Education Reform Act, 1990). Parents are required to provide an explanation for absence within seven days from the first day of any period of absence. This can be done via SMS, phone call, letter or Skoolbag App.
Head lice are only found on the human head or hair. Head lice do not live on furniture, hats, bedding, carpet or anywhere else in the environment. Tips for parents in reducing the spread of head lice.As infestations are particularly common in primary schools, it is best to choose a treatment that can be used over time.
There is no single solution to eradication, only persistence.
• regularly check your children’s hair teach older children to check their own hair
• tying long hair back or braiding it may help reduce the transmission of lice
• keep a good quality fine tooth head lice comb in the shower and encourage all family members to use it when they wash their hair.
Thank you to those families that have donated to the P&C Fundraising Account via online canteen. There is an option to donate as little as $1 when you place your child’s lunch order. All donations are greatly appreciated and the P&C thanks you for you generosity.
We have a tub of unclaimed hats and jumpers under the COLA. It seems that many of these items are brand new but cannot be returned to their owner because they do not have names. Please ensure that anything and everything your child brings to school is clear
The NSW Government is helping kids get active with the new Active Kids Program. From 31/1/18 parents/carers can apply for a $100 voucher for each child enrolled at school. The voucher can be used with a registered activity provider for registration, participation and membership costs for sport and fitness activities. The program runs year round so kids can get active at any time. TO APPLY FOR A $100 VOUCHER GO TO: https://sport.nsw.gov.au/sectordevelopment/activekids
Students need their hat to play in the gully and playground during break times. Please support our sunsafe policy and ensure your child brings their hat to school each day.
The canteen volunteers are not permitted to reheat food for students that has been brought from home. Any leftovers will need to be eaten cold and students are required to bring their own cutlery.

BETTER BALANCED FUTURESThe foundation for life values in our children to assist them to navigate in an ever-changing world.
WHAT IS SRE?
Special Religious Education (SRE) is the time set aside in Public Schools where parents can choose to have their children educated in the faith of their family and cultural background. The NSW Education Act (1990) allows for the local community to make this contribution to public education, via annually approved providers, responsible for developing age appropriate lessons, training and authorisation of teachers.
WHO OFFERS SRE?
All SRE providers must be approved by the NSW Department of Education. Approved Providers represent the Baha’i, Buddhist, Catholic, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Orthodox and Sikh faiths.
WHAT IS TAUGHT?
SRE providers follow an approved curriculum enabling students to learn more about and engage with their religion. SRE teachers are encouraged to use a variety of teaching activities including writing, craft, small groups, class discussion, songs, drama, storytelling, games and new learning technologies. Every SRE provider must have a link to their curriculum scope and sequence on their website.
HOW DO WE CHOOSE SRE?
When completing their school enrolment form a parent nominates their choice of religion in the section provided. Schools should regularly inform parents of SRE options locally, but if a parent is unsure or wants an update, they can simply contact the school. A parent can alter their choice at any time by sending a note to their school principal.
SRE is about choice and SRE providers fully support the right of parents to choose non-SRE options, including private supervised study and Special Education in Ethics classes where available.
