NEWSLETTER ~ TERM 3 ~ No. 1 ~ 23 July 2020
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK - Aaron Richards Welcome back Welcome back to Term 3. It has been wonderful seeing the children walk through the gate with big smiles on their faces, eager to catch up with their friends and teachers. I would like to thank the parents who took the time to pop in to catch up with the teachers. The teachers greatly appreciated the positive welcome that many parents have provided. The inquiry focus for the second half of the year is called “Step Up”. It will be initiated by looking at Jesus or the Saints and consider how they stepped up to evangelise the Good News. The topic will then move in various directions depending on the interests and ideas the children have that relate their lives to the focus. I will be interested to see how the inquiry develops over the next few months. Choir Children from years 5-8 are welcome to join the choir. We will practice from 12:45 on Tuesday lunchtimes, for about half an hour. At this stage we are hoping the Catholic Jubilate will be happening later in the year and we will learn songs for that occasion. There might also be other suitable times for us to perform later in the year (grandparents day and/or end of year celebrations?). The choir is a great way to improve singing and musical skills (although you don't need to be able to read music to be a part of the choir) and to have fun!
Learner-Led Conferences Learner-Led Conferences have been part of the St
Joseph’s School Learning programme for well over
12 years. When the conferences were initiated, St
Joseph’s School was at the forefront of what is now a
well established process that has been adopted by
most schools throughout the country.
Learner-led Conferences provide children with an
opportunity to celebrate their learning with their
parents. Sharing and articulating their learning as
well as achievement is key to success for learners.
Parents can support this process by acknowledging
progress and praising their child on his or her
achievement. The conferences are facilitated by the
teachers who are available to clarify information for
parents.
The Learner-Led conferences will take place on the
3rd and 4th of August. The Junior Teachers (Year 1-
4) will contact parents to organise a conference time
with you. An invitation will be sent out to parents of
children in the Senior team (Year 5-8) to make an
online booking. Please note that children who are
younger than 6 years of age may not be required to
attend a conference as reporting student achievement
at this age is approached differently.
The mid-year written report will be provided to
parents at the Learner-Led Conference. The report is
a summary of student achievement in the core
subjects of Religious Education, Reading, Writing
and Mathematics. Effective reporting priorities
conversation in favour of written report. This is a
process similar to that used at many secondary
schools such as St Bede’s College. Over time, it is
my hope that many of the practices used at Catholic
primary and secondary schools are aligned.
Congratulations
A huge congratulations to Angela Bennett and her
husband Dillon who have announced they are
expecting the birth of a daughter towards the end of
the year. I know that we will all share in the joy of
their first born child.
Community Consultation (from St Joseph's Board of Trustees and Principal) Thank you to the parents who attended the Parent Consultation evening that was held in March this year. As a follow on from this event, we have made the decision to appoint Terri Johnstone. Terri is an experienced, independent consultant who will come into our school to canvas our parent community. This will be done by gathering information from you to help inform the strategic direction and priorities going forward. We ask that you please look out for a survey link from ‘Catalyst for Change Ltd’. This link will direct you to a survey across a secure network and will remain confidential! We would really appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey as St Joseph’s School prides itself on being a community of learners in partnership with parents.
