Flagpoles
You may have noticed the installation of a new flag-pole at the
front entrance of the school? The flag-pole on the left of the front
entrance, when facing the school will be the Australian flag, and
the flag-pole to the right of the entrance will hold the Indigenous
flag. From the beginning of Term 3, I will also be saying the
‘Welcome to Country’ along with an acknowledgement of the
traditional owners of the land on which the school is built – the
Wurundjeri people at Friday assemblies. Many thanks to the kind
school family who donated the flagpole to our school
I’d like to begin by acknowledging the traditional owners
of the land on which we meet today, Wurundjeri people
of the Kulin nation and pay my respects to Elders past
and present.
Assembly survey
Many thanks to the large number of families who
responded to the assembly survey. In the end it was a
two horse race, with both Friday options being 50/50. As a result
we have chosen what we see as the best possible option of these
for the students and their optimum learning times at school. As
from the beginning of Term 3, assembly will be held in the
Multi-Purpose Room with a 2.35/ 2.45 start; concluding close to
3.30pm, whilst allowing time for the students to go back to their
classrooms to collect their belongings.
We sincerely hope the cake raffle will be able to continue, with
tickets being sold as usual, from the Canteen prior to the start of
school.
Best wishes
Karyn Simes-Martin
Racism is a disease in society. We’re all equal. I don’t care what their color is, or religion. Just as long as they’re human beings they’re my buddies. -Mandawuy Yunupingu
NOTICES
Have you seen Ms Jolly in action, presenting the new
“word of the week” at Friday assembly? Complete with theme song and some fabulous moves, it is a spectacle not to
be missed!
The weekly words are designed to challenge, and all students, teachers and staff are encouraged to use the
‘Word of the Week’ (in context). Some house points will be allocated for great wordsmithing’!
Meaning: Lacking flavour, not exciting or fun, boring, weak and dull.
Prep enrolments for 2018 We are currently taking enrolments for current 4 year old
kindergarten students who turn 5 by April 30th, 2018 for the 2018 year.
Next week’s word is…
Insipid
Please remember to bring your snacks and lunches in containers, not
wrappers. This reduces the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill,
and keeps our school clean.
Everyone has embraced Nude Food Wednesdays so well, that as of Term 3 we will be
introducing Nude Food Tuesdays and Wednesdays!
This week’s winners with only one
wrapper are:

NOTICES
Getting involved in School Banking is easy! All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank
Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a
driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day
using their Dollarmite deposit wallet.
School Banking day is Tuesday. Each week you need to place your bank book into your class’s school banking
grey satchel.

Volunteers
needed! We still need volunteers to assist with the student banking program on Tuesday mornings. As the school banking is currently being administered by Office Staff, any assistance would be
greatly appreciated.
Grandparents are also welcome to assist just as long as they have a Working With Children
Card.

KPS FAIR 11th November 2017
Following on the success of Happy Hamper day, our second event will be
BBQ Bonanza and Fancy Hat day
last day of term, Friday 30th June 2017
Our Junior School Councillors invite all students to come to school in free dress, topped off with fancy hat of their choice.
Given that it is also Quidditch Finals season, students might
like to consider a Harry Potter theme for their head ware!
As part of the festivities the fair committee will also be
holding a
whole school sausage sizzle
to raise funds to purchase supplies for the food stalls for this year’s fair. If your child would like to order a sausage in bread or a
veggie burger, please complete the order form which came home in your child’s clipboard and return it to school with the correct
money by Wednesday 28th June 2017.
2017 Fair Committee and the Junior School Council
Books, Books Books!
From the beginning of next term we will be
collecting second hand books for our book stall at
the fair.
So over the upcoming holidays, take the
opportunity to clean out your book shelves. We
would love to help find your unwanted books a
new home, and raise some money for the school
at the same time.

Spring Fun in Nihongo
PREP AND YEARS 1 / 2
日本の春 Nihon no haru
We had fun reading about the adventures of Jess and Aki in Japan. We tried but couldn’t solve the mystery of
the magical 五円 (go en) 5 yen coin with the hole in the
middle!
We got to draw our own beautiful pictures
of us having a picnic with our friends and
family under the falling さくら sakura
cherry blossoms.
We learnt that Japanese people never wear shoes in
their houses or at school! And, they even have special
toilet slippers! Sensei showed us toilet slippers and
special squeaky sandals that little kids wear so their
mothers know where they are! We all got to have a go
at making them squeak. Sugoi!
Japanese News
We were treated to a kamishibai (Japanese old-style
slide show) called 竜の目の涙 Ryuu no me no namida
and in English it’s called ‘The Dragon’s Tears’. We
learnt that we should not judge people or things by
how they look. With kindness and understanding we
can all be friends.
We have lots of songs in Japanese lessons but our
favourite is theジェリービーンズ Jerii biinzu song
Preps were really lucky as we got to eat popcorn (poppuco-n ポツプコーン) with
chopsticks. Oishii!! Yum! And, we got to take the waribashi (chopsticks) home!

2017 PEACE RUN
On Wednesday 21st June, runners from this year’s Peace Run are visiting our
school during the afternoon.
The Peace Run has visited over 150 nations and thousands of communities
since it began in 1987.
The Peace torch is passed from hand to hand and heart to heart as the
team meets with school children, community groups and civic leaders
along the way. It is a non-political, non-religious and non-commercial
offering the simple inspiration that peace begins with each of us.
The Peace torch has been held by Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa,
Mikhail Gorbachev, Robert De Castella, Carl Lewis as well as many other
leaders and dignitaries.
When the Peace Run visits a school the program runs for approximately
30 minutes. It is interactive with students, teaching them the Peace song,
introducing the international runner, followed by a short international
flavoured quiz. The program finishes with the children holding the torch
and making a wish for World Peace. Schools that participate also
receive a free tree that can be planted in the school garden and is
dedicated to World Peace.

Perhaps you have been to Greece or know some Greek words. Have you seen pictures of Ancient Greek buildings that still stand today? Can you recognize their architecture in buildings in your home city? Learn to draw the columns in the buildings. How far did Pheidippides run at Marathon? Then what? Why did so many new ideas arise in Ancient Greece? What battle strategy was used successfully 2500 years later? Is China a democracy? Compare it with Australia and the first democracy in Athens? Learn to debate like they did. Try your hand at their kind of art. Or was it a craft? Great thinkers lived then so we will try some of their experiments. Why did so many things today come from Ancient Greece in the first place? Have fun learning all of this and more.
