Principal’s Pen Cornerstone Way The College’s land in Dunsborough is situated on a road called ‘Cornerstone Way’. The name is intentional. It was chosen as it reflects one of the chief aims of the College – the point of difference that sets up apart. Let me quote the formal descriptor: ‘The Cornerstone Way: The College Board and leadership team of Cornerstone aim to bring together and equip a competent team of Christian educators and support staff who are committed to making a life enhancing investment in the students we serve.’ That is Cornerstone at its heart. That is our aim and goal – to provide an education that provides academic excellence, but that also delivers growth and development for each student. I wish to acknowledge that as staff we are not perfect. We are flawed, as is everyone, and on occasion need to humbly re-evaluate our techniques and methods. However, even in the midst of this we see God working within the lives of our students. With the supportive partnership of you as parents, and the embracing of the Cornerstone Way together, we believe we reach the God inspired potential that makes us different from other schools. It is evident that the longer a student is at Cornerstone, the greater and more powerful the resultant enrichment is. The recent Year 12 class were a wonderful example of the growth and life enhancement that occurs when the education we offer is fully embraced. This is available to every student, and every family at the College. Thank you to those who have at times expressed their encouragement and partnership in this journey. Hearing the good stories of how your children have benefited by being here is fuel for the road for our staff. The journey we are all on navigates the ‘Cornerstone Way’. It’s not just a physical street, it’s a Core Value. It’s what makes Cornerstone different and our prayer is that you will celebrate this journey alongside us in partnership. Together we can do our part in helping the students we have reach their utmost potential. Let me quote the formal descriptor: ‘The Cornerstone Way: The College Board and leadership team of Cornerstone aim to bring together and equip a competent team of Christian educators and support staff who are committed to making a life enhancing investment in the students we serve.’

That is Cornerstone at its heart.

Around the College

Cleaver’s ClangersWhy did Tony go out with a prune? Because he couldn’t find a date!

What did the little mountain say to the big mountain? Hi Cliff!

Transition to High SchoolParents of students in Year 6 may like to know that in coming days the high school will provide your children with a transition day.On this occasion, the Primary Graduates will get to see what high school will be like. We find this helps put students at ease regarding the changes that lie ahead.

Community Health AuditPlease check your mail box in the next few days! All families will receive a survey from the College which we really would appreciate you completing and returning as promptly as possible. This is part of our community engagement plan which is being driven by the school board, and we value the honest opinions of parents as we prepare for the future. We need your feedback about the good and even the not so good.No Cornerstone staff member will view the findings, but all surveys will be collated by an independent firm, Endeavour Community Relations. So, when it arrives, go and make yourself a cup of tea, grab a pen, and fill it out. Please return it with the youngest child in your family, or drop it into the office personally. They will be placed in a box ready to be forwarded to Endeavour. We very much look forward to your enthusiastic participation.

Arrival timesWould parents please note that children are not to be on the school grounds prior to 8:15am. As the office is not open and

staff are in meetings prior to this, the reality is that we are unable to provide Duty of Care before 8:15am.Please deliver your children to school after 8:15am, but well before 8:35am when the siren sounds. Thanks for your help.

Mission TripYear 10 students will be departing on their annual Mission Trip to Kalgoorlie in less than two weeks. Please pray for safety in their travels and for a time of connection, deepening of friendships and to enjoy the ability to invest in others and be a blessing.

The College BridgeWould parents please make sure they adhere to the speed limits in the carpark, and to take special care when sharing the road space at the College bridge. It has been noted that with students and parents using the space for foot-traffic, that the closeness of cars is often of concern. We need to share the space so please let’s be careful and thoughtful towards one another.

Volunteer Parent Morning TeaIf you have volunteered at Cornerstone this year, then we want to thank you. From canteen helpers to those who spend time in the library, we truly value the contribution you make.

If you have volunteered, you should receive an invitation shortly to attend this special event. It’s being held on December 1st at 10:00am.If you think you might like to come along in future, then talk with the office or your child’s teacher about how you can be involved and we can make sure you get to join in next time.

Confused? In the past year, we changed the titles of our leadership to reflect their roles more clearly - but they are titles you may not be familiar with. Instead of our leaders of the Primary and Secondary school being known as the ‘Deputies’, they are now Head of Primary and Head of Secondary respectively. We have some cool acronyms that apply as well. Boyd Davey is a HOS (Head of Secondary), Judy Nolan is a HOP (Head of Primary) and Tina King is an AHOP (Assistant Head of Primary). We hope this helps clarify some of the changes that have been made.

Market DayPlanning to be at Market Day? Great! We know you will enjoy being part of this annual event on the College calendar. A letter will go home closer to the time, but for now, please mark aside Friday November 28th, 1-2:30pm as the time to join us in this special day. Invite anyone you think may enjoy joining in with the Cornerstone Community.Clearly, most parents will elect to send money with their children to enable them to purchase the items of other students. If this applies to you, we would encourage you to send their spending money to school in an envelope that is marked ‘Market Day’. • Market Day will have gifts, food and activities.• A Coffee van will be on site• Year 1 & 2 student parents are invited to visit the stalls with their child. Otherwise Year 1 & 2 students will have a High School buddy to help monitor spending and orderly behaviour.

Year 6 & Year 12 UniformsLast reminder! Whilst the summer uniform is currently in use, this is to remind Year 6 and Year 12 students and parents that they still need a properly fitted winter uniform for one more occasion this year. The Presentation Nights for these students require graduates to have their full formal winter uniform being worn. Please check dress lengths.

The Cornerstone FamilyOur recent graduates spoke in glowing terms of the sense of family and community they have experienced at Cornerstone. We loved to hear that and know we need to work hard at ensuring this is something that isn’t lost as we grow. We give thanks to God that he has blessed us with such a remarkable team of parents, students, teachers, staff and families that come together to make Cornerstone the unique community that it is.Like any healthy family, communication is the key - and it requires each of us to actively engage in the opportunities we have to share in the journey of education of our children.Celebrating one another and encouraging each other is one way to ensure we protect this uniqueness. What can we do? Just a few ideas are:• Take the time to get to know other parents of your

children’s classmates. Taking an interest in others is so vital. Partnering together to raise up great kids is incredibly important. You could choose to come along to a parent morning tea or class gathering.

• Take an interest in your children’s learning - and encourage them to work hard and do well.

• Have open and honest dialogue with teachers. Yes, tell us when there are things we need to consider or change, but also make sure you let us know if we do something well. We all need encouragement.

• Celebrate the victories of your children. Positive encouragement is a much greater motivation than criticism. They love to hear that you believe in them.

We are grateful we get to share this road towards adulthood with your children and so very much appreciate the partnership that comes with being part of the Cornerstone Community.
