Principals Message The numbers are in and our West Haven Wolverine family has grown. In fact, weve grown about 20% from this time last year. We are quite a big family! Family is the word I use most often when I discuss our school and how I expect peo- ple to treat each other. Families come in many shapes and sizes, but one thing is ex- pected no matter what: We care about each other, no matter the inevitable squabble, and we stand up for each other. This year, Ive challenged the students to be Wolverinefierce about looking after our family. Being fierce is not about being aggressive. Rather, it means doing the right thing when it is most challenging. It means sticking with it, never giving up. It means using your voice to support and empower others to help our family. At the beginning of the year, I ran our staff through an exercise asking them to de- scribe our school. They needed to keep their answers to one word but could supply several answers. We got a variety of answers, but some of the most consistent words used included: caring, big, fun, welcoming, active, team, inspiring, and clean. Follow- ing the activity, I shared that family is about staff working together, looking after the kids like they are their own, and working closely with parents. We discussed and are working on this philosophy with our students. This messaging will also come out throughout the year in our general conversations and assemblies. I would love to hear from you too; in one or two words, how would you describe our school? If you get a chance to share, please follow this link to https://goo.gl/forms/twgOTYqGiWOZG93l2 and share your thoughts. This Friday, September 28th, we recognized Orange Shirt Day and went on the Terry Fox Run. Our family believes in looking after our families in the school and our global family. Many of our staff and students have joined in wearing orange shirts to show that we all care about every child and recognize the pain that residential schools caused to so many families. Thank you to all families that sent in donations to support cancer research, a disease that has impacted so many of our families. The Wolverine family was able to raise over $500 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is a great time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for! Principal’s Message The numbers are in and our West Haven Wolverine family has grown. In fact, we’ve grown about 20% from this time last year. We are quite a big family! Family is the word I use most often when I discuss our school and how I expect peo-ple to treat each other. Families come in many shapes and sizes, but one thing is ex-pected no matter what: We care about each other, no matter the inevitable squabble, and we stand up for each other. This year, I’ve challenged the students to be ‘Wolverine’ fierce about looking after our family. Being fierce is not about being aggressive. Rather, it means doing the right thing when it is most challenging. It means sticking with it, never giving up. It means using your voice to support and empower others to help our family. At the beginning of the year, I ran our staff through an exercise asking them to de-scribe our school. They needed to keep their answers to one word but could supply several answers. Operation Education Fundraiser Operation Education is a co-operative fundraising initi-ative that partners local schools with Boston Pizza restaurants in your community to earn cash back. Staff, students and families can dine at Leduc Boston Pizza and help their school earn 5% cash back on the pre-tax total of submitted receipts.

Admazing Coupon Book

Order forms for the Admazing Coupon book were sent home with students. The coupon books will be available until October 31. New this year: for every 5 books sold, the child receives 1 free!

WHPS School Council & Fundraising Society Meetings

The next meetings for both School Council and the Fundraising Society will be held on Thursday, October 4th in the Learning Commons starting at 6:30 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Co-op Number

Our school has been given a Leduc Coop number. When getting liquor, gas or groceries at Leduc Coop, use the number 34666 to help support our school. It is the easiest fundraiser ever! Just using the school number every 5th or 6th time when getting gas or groceries will benefit our school tremendously.

Hot Lunch

The November menu will be open on October 1st, and will remain open until October 15, 2018. Remember to have your orders in by midnight on October 15, 2018.

If you’ve got questions, suggestions or comments, please contact us at [email protected]

Erin Fuson , Secretary, WHPSFS & WHPSSC

Halloween Dress Code When selecting a costume for your child, please remember that we do not want to promote violence. Please, keep the costume tasteful and the school’s dress code remains in effect. Any props that resemble weapons should be left at home.

Reminder

We are unable to release students to an-yone besides their parents or legal guard-ians. If someone other than yourselves will be picking up a student, we need notifi-cation from you by either a phone call or a note to the classroom teacher or the office. Thank you for your help in this matter.

**If there is a legal custody order that pertains to your child, please be advised that in order to enforce this, we must have a copy at the school.

Hot Lunch Our hot lunch ordering program can be found online at westhaven.hotlunches.net. The program is open for orders from the 1st of the month to the 15th, at which time the system shuts down and removes any partial or unpaid orders. Please ensure that your order is complete by midnight of the 15th of every month.

Cutlery

Please remember to send any utensils required by your child to eat their lunch or snack to school with them.

NUT AWARE SCHOOL & CLASSROOMS: WHPS has “Nut Aware” classrooms. If no one in a classroom has a peanut allergy, peanut products are allowed. However, if a student has a peanut allergy, his/her classroom is designated as a “Nut Aware” classroom. In “Nut Aware” classrooms, families are discouraged from bringing peanut products to school, a “Nut Aware Classroom” sign is posted on the door; teachers, parents, & stu-dents work together to develop a reasonable & appropriate plan. “Nut Free” classrooms cannot be guaranteed be-cause schools cannot ensure that the classroom is completely free of nuts, and they also cannot guarantee other parents will not send peanuts/nuts to school. We believe it’s best to educate students and not give them a false sense of secu-rity - we may put them at a bigger risk because they may be complacent. Food allergies need to be respected. It’s a manageable condition - not something of which we need to be afraid.

Emergency Lunches: We are accepting donations for our emergen-cy lunch program. Some very helpful items are; bread, jam, peanut butter, granola bars, plastic spoons & forks. This program will also be subsidized by both our hot lunch program and our School Nutrition Program. Any dona-tions would be greatly accepted.

Early Dismissal

Just a reminder that early dismissal is the first Wednesday of each month (except September). Classes dismiss at 2:30 PM.

There are no ECS classes on

early dismissal days.

Microwave Day Microwave day will be starting on October 1st for the grades 1 to 6 students. Parents will be here to heat up student lunches on Mon-days. If there is no school on a Monday for whatever reason, then there will be no micro-wave day that week.

Food must be sent to the school in microwave safe containers. Food that is sent in plastic wrap or original plastic packaging (ie: pizza pops, etc.) or any other non-microwave safe wrap will not be microwaved.

Please label food containers with your child's name and grade, and send any utensils with them that they may need to eat it.

We would like to send out a HUGE Congratulations to our own Deb Schmidt, who recently won the 2018 Inspiring Success Award of Distinction. This award recognizes an individual or group who has made a nota-ble, significant and positive con-tribution to Black Gold Regional Schools, who has demonstrated recognized leadership that has had an identifiable impact and has made a significant difference to public education in the Black Gold community, and who has inspired success in students and/or staff through Student-Focused Learning Relationships, a Supportive Environment, Pas-sion and Managing Resources Responsibly. Congratulations Mrs. Schmidt, on this very well deserved award. We are so proud of you!

Counsellor’s Corner

Welcome back to the new school year. I have recently had the privilege to sit in on a num-ber of different professional gatherings that focused on resources that are available to be accessed by families within our community. Upon reflection of these sessions I have come to two realizations. First, there are a great deal of resources directly in our community or easily accessed in surrounding communities. These include the Leduc Food Bank, the HOPE center, AHS (Alberta Health Services) parenting sessions, FCSS (Family and Com-munity Support Services), and many others. Secondly, knowing what is available and how to access these resources can be challenging, especially during a time of need. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you need assistance navigating available supports. I have attached a link to a number of FREE parenting sessions being hosted by Alberta Health Services, simply click on the link for additional information or to register. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/caregiversessions

Please check out this amazing resource for speech and language support from Alberta Health Services! "The Talk Box website was put together by speech-language pathologists to share ideas about creating language-rich environ-ments for preschool and school-age children. Children learn language everyday and parents play an important role in their child’s speech and language development. The Talk Box shares ideas and activities for creating language-rich environments. It has everyday tips, information about what to expect in speech and language development, when to get help, and where to get help." - Alberta Health Services

School Health Champion News The month of September signaled the official kick off of our new Student Wellness Action Team, the

CREW. The excitement surrounding our CREW definitely brought out the student leaders, as our

group is now comprised of over 45 students in grades 4-9! This wealth of student leaders will be work-

ing with the ME to WE program to allow us to integrate even more elements of community service

learning into our daily school activities.

In relation to CREW activities, October is a busy month for our student leaders. CREW will be attend-

ing the Alberta WE Day Conference on October 12th at Rogers Place—should be an amazing experi-

ence for our students! We will also once again continue with our activity wristband challenge through-

out the entire school year commencing in October, so bring in your wristbands from your activities and

enter them into the monthly draw for LRC prizes.

As well, in October with the inevitable change in weather (perhaps we’ll get fall?), the CREW team will

be organizing a couple of community service events to assist those who may be in need:

We Scare Hunger Running October 1st through the 5th, our CREW students will be teaming up with our grade nine lead-

ership option students to organize a week long food drive in support of the Leduc Food Bank entitled,

“We Scare Hunger”! During this week students are encouraged to bring in a nonperishable food item

to their classroom in support of the Leduc Food Bank.

Sock-tober Following last year’s highly successful event in which 1003 pairs of socks were collected by the stu-

dents to donate to homeless shelters in and around the Edmonton and Leduc area, our CREW team will

be out to prove once again that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a

big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless. Running October 8th through to Octo-

ber 25th, students are encouraged to donate a pair (or more) of new, unworn socks. Watch for further

event information to come home with your child closer to the event date.

The event will wrap up with our first school spirit day, Crazy Sock Day, on Friday, October 26th!
