Pupils in Year 6 were honoured to welcome HeadNorth expedition leader and accomplished polar explorer, Alan Chambers MBE, along with members of this year’s team, including Rugby World Cup 2003 player Danny Grewcock MBE.

Alan, who is a Millfield parent, told of the toughest North Pole challenge he has led in the past ten years due to adverse weather conditions and poor visibility faced by the group. The pupils were riveted by the retelling of their expedition which featured the team’s plane making an emergency landing on the first day, rivers appearing in the shifting ice, white-outs and temperatures of around -35°C.

The team arrived at the top of the world at 1pm on Saturday 13 April, safe and sound after their gruelling 6.5 day challenge, and unfurled a flag celebrating Millfield’s 80th Anniversary.

The team of nine were raising money for The Lewis Moody Foundation and The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund (RMCTF) and have so far been pledged over £180,000. The former helps those affected by serious illness, offering days out and one-off experiences for children and their families as well as funding scientific research and the RMCTF provides a better quality of life to serving and retired Royal Marines and their families. Along with Alan Chambers, Gary Wright, Charlie Birkett, Yves Damette of Y.CO, Rugby World Cup 2003 winners Danny Grewcock MBE, Josh Lewsey MBE and Lewis Moody MBE, and two Royal Marines completed the challenge. Danny is connected to the school as he regularly supports the Millfield Rugby Programme, with coaching across all ages.

Pupils were inspired by the messages of

resilience, teamwork and a positive mental attitude to achieve seemingly impossible challenges. They also took a close look at some of the items the team took with them to the Pole, including clothing and supplies imperative to their survival. Each team member hauled a sledge weighing 60kg during their daily treks.

Alan commented “In the last ten years, this was the toughest North Pole challenge I've led, because of the weather, the conditions and the poor visibility. The team were very strong, mentally and physically, which enabled us to finish the trip on an incredible high.” After 4-5 days of very poor weather, the sun came out as the team approached the Pole, in Alan’s words: “An incredible way to finish a fantastic adventure.”

South African Exchange Tom Maddock and Finlay Arnold have had a wonderful time at Selbourne Primary School in South Africa and made lots of new friends.

Year 5 trip to Montacute House On Thursday 18 June, Year 5 went to Montacute House.

“I really enjoyed drawing pictures of Henry VIII and I enjoyed eating the scones; I think everyone else did too! It was like being back in Tudor times.” Freddie Turnell

“Last Thursday we went to Montacute House. It was astonishingly large and it was very, very impressive. I loved the play area too, it was massive; you could almost get lost! The area in front of the house, where we sat to sketch, was huge. I was impressed by how much money the owner of the house must have put into it. I loved it!” Artem Sinhaievskyi

“We went to Montacute House and had great fun drawing pictures of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. We then had a little quiz around the garden and then drew the front of the house. For snacks, after drawing, we had some scones. My favourite part was when we learnt about the different rooms, like the bedroom where you have to keep animal blood in a bowl under the bed to stop the bugs biting you.” Cisca Norris

Year 5 Roman Dig On Tuesday morning the whole of Year 5 travelled back in time to look for Roman artefacts as part of their study of Roman Britain. They walked down to a field behind the stables and found a neat trench prepared by the groundsmen. Taking it in turns to dig, examine and record their findings the pupils managed to unearth an astonishing range of Roman objects, as well as some left by later occupants.

Examples of items found were building materials such as marble flooring, clay tiles and bits of brick; animal bones, oyster and snail shells from food preparation; shards of pottery, a brass pestle and mortar, and even some bronze coins depicting various Roman emperors. They also discovered pottery items from Victorian times and even later.

It was really exciting to find so many different artefacts and the discovery and examination of them prompted some excellent questions from the pupils:

‘Why are things from different ages found in the same place?’

‘Why are bones and pottery muddled up together?’

‘How do we know these things are Roman?’

The magic of archaeological discovery made for a really interesting and stimulating lesson, and some pupils have subsequently drawn their findings for display.

Many thanks to Mrs Velsaco for organising the dig, to the groundsmen who were so kind in preparing the trench, and to all of Year 5 for working so hard and with such enthusiasm.

Year 8 Project Work Year 8 project work which has been completed over the last three weeks documents all the great activities which have been going on. They wrote a scary camp fire story, a newspaper article about house cricket, a TV advert script for the photography workshop, drew a picture of the Sports Pavilion and cricket square, drew a cartoon of the drama workshop, top 10 fears for next year, Speech Day awards and Year 8 quiz questions. The winner of best project was Victoria Trickett.

A Special Birthday Cake

Many happy returns to Max French who celebrated his birthday recently. Just look at the cake his grandmother made! A work of art.

Farewell Tea Party The Juniors were very sad to say goodbye to Mrs Bosher and Mrs Coates this week, who have between them, given 56 years to Millfield Prep School. We thought that they couldn’t leave without a party so the Juniors have been secretly organising a farewell performance for them over the summer term.

The party kicked off with a beautiful rendition of ‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ sung by the whole of the Juniors, followed by a video, secretly filmed by Mr James of ‘School’s out for Summer’, in which all the children rocked their air guitars. Finally the cheerleading club performed ‘Uptown Funk’, before Mrs Bosher and Mrs Coates received a handmade card each from the children.

The tea party organised by Trevor and the catering team was spectacular with sandwiches, cakes and ice-cream, ensuring that two of our very special teachers had a send-off that hopefully they will never forget!

Year 3 Ice-cream Challenge Year 3 enjoyed ice-cream this week after completing their times table ice-cream challenge. The challenge was to learn as many times tables as possible throughout the year and then go on to complete increasingly difficult mixed speed tests. Maisie Zander was the overall winner; the first to reach ‘Almost Extreme’ with Ellis James just a week behind. Gabriel Berger was the winner in Mrs James’ set reaching ‘Getting Tricky’. Everyone really enjoyed eating their ice-cream reward after all of their hard work.

Boarding Life

This week saw the Champion boys hand over a very large cheque, quite literally, to CLIC Sargent following their hard work fund raising this year. Sponsored skips, boot cleans, penny collecting amongst other things have all contributed. Top effort, boys!

ATHLETICS

From September ex-GB Modern Pentathlete Lydia Rosling will be available to Millfield Modern Pentathletes at both Senior and Prep schools for specialist coaching sessions.

It is envisaged that these lessons will predominantly be in shooting and the combined run/shoot event – areas in which Lydia excelled as an athlete.

There will be an additional charge for these private sessions and they will be timetabled around other sporting activities.

The National Prep Schools Athletics Finals were held on Wednesday 24 June in Birmingham.

We took our biggest ever team and we certainly had some genuine medal hopes.

Our final tally of four national titles is also our best result. There were medallists and many personal bests.

Twitter was buzzing all through the meeting and if you follow us on @MPS_Sport then you will be able to have a look at all photos from the event.

Georgia Dolan was disappointed with her shot put result but this then spurred her on to win the discus. Jami Schlueter was disappointed with his long jump but this made him even more determined and he won the hurdles. Tajera Dayani was very disappointed with her 100m but this then allowed her to win the shot. The Year 8 relay girls - Olivia Kinnear, Natasha Brookes, Alice Nanton and Tajera Dayani - were defending their title and there was no way they were going to give up their crown!

Our biggest team, our best results but still people who want to better. This sums up our athletes.

After their win against Kings Hawford in the quarter-finals, Millfield Prep represented the west in the National IAPS Rounders’ finals in Sussex. They had a good warm-up game against Port Regis on Wednesday winning 20.5-3.5. Then they travelled on to Chichester to stay overnight; the girls were very well behaved and after a good meal went for an early night. They were up early for a good breakfast, then travelled to Windlesham House where the finals were being played.

We played Cheam School, in our semi-final match. The girls had a great start and after the first innings they were 9.5-17 ahead. Cheam could not respond and they were all out after two innings for 12. We progressed to the final to play for 1st or 2nd place.

After lunch the girls warmed-up and were ready to take on Berkhamstead School; who had scored some impressive rounders’ in their semi-

final match against Windlesham. Unfortunately it was the worst start possible for Millfield Prep, after being put into bat the team had four girls out after 6 balls. They chipped away and only scored 2 after all out! The girls then impressively kept Windlesham down to 6.5 after another all-out innings, their lowest total of the season. Sadly we couldn’t catch up to their score and lost 5.5-6.5.

The girls were superb all day and a pleasure to be with. I have enjoyed every minute of coaching them this term and they have improved through their hard work and dedication. Also a big thank you to Mrs Hazell who accompanied us and all the parents who travelled to Sussex to support us.

A HUGE congratulations to the U11A team who were crowned National IAPS Rounders runners-up 2015.

NETBALL Congratulations to all the girls who went to the Somerset County Satellite Netball Selections. All the girls who went were selected for stage two, which took place last Thursday and the squad is selected from Years 7, 8 and 9. The following girls were selected for the final process which is their fitness benchmark testing last Sunday in

Yeovil; Olivia Besant, Martine Scott, Lily Della Valle, Georgia Dolan and Jasmine Campbell-Du Boulay.

A special mention to Tajera Dayani who was spotted in stage 1 and forwarded to the Full County Squad Trials (normally reserved for Year 10 and 11).

ROUNDERS

TRIATHLON Jasmine Caley secured her first ever podium for triathlon at the weekend as she finished 2nd at the North Bristol Junior Triathlon. She competes in the Tristar 2 category and is one of the youngest in the category racing against Year 5, 6 and some Year 7 girls. She had to complete a 200m swim, 3.2k cycle and a 1.6k run against 21 other girls and finished in a time of 23:40 only 43 secs behind the race winner. Niall Caley continued his preparation for the National qualification race at Eton Dorney with victory in the Tristar 3 category.

Newsletter

This Year... The final newsletter of the year and what a year it has been. It has flown by and I have loved every minute of it. I am so proud to be working at Millfield Pre-Prep and have been made so welcome here. The staff have been incredibly supportive and the children just delightful. We have had a wonderful final few days with delicious tea parties, fabulous plays, amazing sports and yummy picnics. How lucky are our children to have such beautiful surroundings in which to grow up and learn?

At Millfield we believe that our rounded and broad education is vital in order to develop all aspects of a child’s personality – something that Mr Tony Little, Head of Eton, also agrees with. In his new book, ‘An Intelligent Person’s Guide to Education’ (my summer read for the forthcoming holiday) he quotes two axioms, namely that young people learn at least as much from each other as they do from adults and that they learn just as much outside the classroom as in it. It is good to know that someone so ‘high up’ in the world of education agrees with us and is supportive of our holistic and creative approach to educating young children!

I hope you all have a lovely summer holiday. Good luck to those of you who are leaving for pastures new and best wishes to our Year 2 pupils as they transfer into the Prep school – I am sure they will have a fantastic time.

A few words from Mrs Link... Millfield’s founder ‘Boss’ Meyer gave us the legacy that every child is an individual character with skills and talents that we, as adults, need to help them explore and develop. The Pre-Prep is the most amazing environment for this to happen. Cutting edge from the beginning, when we were the first Pre-Prep in the area, your children’s happiness and wellbeing has remained at the forefront throughout. Our Head of Pre-Prep, Alison Blasdale, has embraced our ethos and she has brought her expertise and experience to an amazing team of talented, creative and dedicated staff. I count myself extremely fortunate to have taught in what I believe is a truly inspirational school.

It has been a fantastic last few days and I cannot sufficiently express how much the kind words in cards and emails have meant to me. The superb albums of drawings and photographs are incredibly special. Thank you so much for the wonderful gifts, my beautiful ammonite is something I always hoped to find one day when fossil hunting and now it has found me!!

After 29 years, I recognise that Millfield embraces the pupils, their families and all the staff and we will always carry a part of this amazing school with us wherever we go in the world. Thank you so much.

Pre-School

The Pre-School had a wonderful time when they visited Noah's Ark Zoo Farm. They saw a variety of animals from three-week-old chicks and lambs to lions, elephants and rhinos. They fed the meerkats and held guinea pigs. A great day out!

Year 2 Potatoes

On Wednesday, Year 2 harvested the new potatoes they had grown. They weighed them all and were able to take home over half a kilo each! They also grew radishes and lettuce and tasted raspberries and blackcurrants from the garden.

Reception

In maths this week, the Reception children have been doing some problem solving tasks. They had to make Sophie the Snake using cubes. They had to choose two colours and make sure they used the same number of each colour. They found out that they needed 16 cubes and that half of 16 is 8.

Year 1 Science Investigations

It might be near the end of term but Year 1 are still working hard inside and outside the classroom. Our science topic on the classification of living things – with the help of Sir David Attenborough – has taken us around the world. If you haven’t seen the ‘Rise of Animals – Triumph of the Vertebrates’ you have missed the best explanation of animal biology you could ever wish to see. In the photographs the children have chosen four flowering plants to investigate and chart their findings.

The Minis enjoyed a splashy, splashy session of water play!

There were lots of different water based activities for everyone to explore… paddling pools, hook a duck, dollies to bathe, the crazy water sprinkler and EVEN our very own the Minis car wash!

The children had a fabulous time getting wet and enjoying the sunshine!

We gathered for snack time and enjoyed mini muffins and fruit before finishing up with a story!

Happy Summer Holidays to all of Our Minis!

We had a 'Rainbowtastic' time at our end of term party! We had the most delicious party food and ice lollies while mums and dads enjoyed a scone or 2!

A special goodbye to our lovely little friends who are too BIG and grown up for the group now... We bid you a fond farewell!
