Welcome

Millfield School is a remarkable place. From the founding of the school by ‘Boss’ Meyer 75years ago, the rich and interesting history of Millfield continues to be built upon. Millfield isstill developing into one of the world’s most outstanding schools, bringing young people togetherto enjoy learning.

Our school is rich in opportunities for pupils with a passion for learning. Millfield aspires tounlock that special something within each individual, providing many different learningcontexts, options and challenges inside and outside the classroom. We rejoice in the spirit ofour pupils and demand their contribution to the learning community we have established.Talented and committed staff work with our pupils to achieve these ends.

The school is unpretentious and grounded in the strength of relationships that are the bedrockof all great communities. Millfield is tremendously diverse in terms of the academic, culturaland sporting backgrounds of its pupils. This diversity assists pupils in developing a sense oftheir place in the world and their ability to relate with others who have different skill sets, abilities and life experiences.

Millfield delights in being known as a school for all-rounders. The capacity to engage at manydifferent levels across various domains of learning is central to life at Millfield. Each pupilmust balance their programme, meet commitments and understand the responsibilities theyhave. Pupils’ aspirations are nurtured throughout their time at the school; we know when tochallenge and when to support our pupils to help them become the best that they can be. Inthis regard, we also recognise that parents are critical members of the support team. Thus, wekeep parents updated about the progress and achievements of their children during theacademic year and welcome them to attend school events.

This booklet outlines our school – its facilities, academic programmes and co-curricular offerings– it cannot, however, encapsulate all that Millfield is. The people are at the heart of this greatschool and I encourage you to visit us to meet them and to explore all that is on offer.

Craig Considine – Headmaster

Millfield aims to provide a broad and balanced education which not onlyprepares pupils for publicexaminations but also gives them theconfidence to achieve success in their adult lives.

We believe that education should opendoors, not close them by prematurespecialisation. Up to the age of 16therefore, every pupil receives a soundeducation in both Arts and Sciences.

All pupils are taught in small sets –rarely more than 15 and usually farfewer – thanks to our staff:pupil ratio of1:6.5. In order that every youngstercan progress at an appropriate pace,

classes are streamed by general ability.Pupils are placed in sets by ability inMathematics, Languages, Science andEnglish until the end of their GCSEs.

A specialist department deservesparticular mention: The LearningSupport Centre (LSC), which has builtup an international reputation forhelping pupils with specific learningdifficulties. Once needs and difficultieshave been identified, pupils have thebenefit of being taught in very smallclasses and are assigned to one of our qualified and experienced LSCtutors for educational support andEnglish teaching.

Pupils inthe three country houses come intoschool by coach for breakfast and forthe rest of the school day, returning‘home’ to their house for prep in theevenings. They enjoy having meals asa house community on a number ofoccasions during the week.

Each house has its own team spirit andits members develop a strong sense ofloyalty to it. Pupils remain in the samehouse throughout their school careersand are encouraged to take onincreasing levels of responsibility asmonitors or house prefects. Seniorpupils may help organise events atweekends and take a leading part inthe thriving programme of inter-housecompetitions, which are an enjoyablepart of house life.

Day pupils – who make up over one fifthof the school population – also take partin house competitions and activitiesalongside boarders. They are organisedinto five houses in order to integratethem fully into all aspects of school life. These are also run by Houseparentswith the support of Assistants.

All houses are single-sex, but boys’and girls’ houses are linked in groupsfor many competitions and events.

Each Group Tutor isattached to a boarding or day house andcares for approximately a dozen pupilsin the house who are also within thesame year group. They take a closepersonal interest in the academic and all-round development of each pupil intheir group. Pupils and their parents areencouraged to contact Houseparentsand Group Tutors on any matters whichconcern them.

As an international school, weencourage children of all religions toexplore and develop their own faith inan atmosphere of tolerance towardsother beliefs. The Chaplain ensuresthat the school Chapel is dedicated foruse as a place of worship for all faiths. Here, several services are held everyweek. They are primarily aimed atChristians of all denominations, but thefocus on spiritual, social and moraldevelopment excludes nobody. Shortaddresses have a key role in thisrespect. The issues tackled are almostalways aimed at a broad audience andhave general appeal, so that those ofany religion (not just Christianity) orthose of none are equally at home.

Each year a course leading toConfirmation is arranged. RomanCatholic pupils, like those of otherdenominations, are welcome toworship in Chapel, though some attendMass in Glastonbury. Muslims, Jews,Hindus and Buddhists meet regularly, responding to need. Several of thelarger services in the year are held inthe magnificent setting of WellsCathedral and one of the most upliftingof these is the Start of Year Service.Every faith represented at Millfieldtakes an active part in Wells Cathedraland to hear spiritual works from somany different times and places, allsearching for truth in their own way, isa profoundly moving experience.

Millfield’s approach to sport is in linewith the school’s central belief thateducation is concerned with the wholehuman being and that every pupil hasthe capacity to achieve somethingworthwhile. The main objective of thesports programme is to identify anddevelop skills in every pupil, becauseachievement in one area so oftenproves to be the key to the will tosucceed in school life as a whole.

Choice, therefore, plays a crucial partin the sports programme but this doesnot mean that there is no direction.Junior pupils normally play set gameson certain days of the week and alsofollow a comprehensive PhysicalEducation course which prepares themfor safe and effective participation inall physical activities. In addition tocompulsory games and PE, the schooloffers a wide range of sports fromwhich even the youngest pupils maychoose. As a pupil grows in seniority, choice from the 40 or more sportsplayed and taught in the senior schoolbecomes more and more a matter of

personal inclination and interest.Outstanding performers in any sportare given every help andencouragement. If necessary, we may, after consultation with the pupil’sparents and teachers, arrange for adegree of flexibility in his or hertimetable to allow for special coaching.

Over 200 members of staff, many ofwhom are first-class coaches andplayers, help run the gamesprogramme. It is their varied skills, together with the school’s exceptionalsports facilities, which have given theprogramme its comprehensive natureand its reputation. We are extremelyproud of our sporting record andachievements. Many internationallyfamous sportsmen and sportswomenreceived their early coaching atMillfield. We encourage competitionand in addition to regular fixturesagainst other schools, which involve asmany pupils as possible, many schoolteams compete against adult andcounty standard opposition across avariety of sports.
