Welcome Back Hello 2021! A very warm welcome to all parents and carers, students and staff as we start the new school

year. Despite the rainy weather recently, the school year started very smoothly. We trust our students

and families had a relaxing and safe holiday. This year we welcome 42 new Kindergarten students and

a number of new families who have enrolled in our school. Kindy have had a fabulous start to school and

demonstrate great confidence and engagement in their learning. We love seeing their excited happy

smiles.

We would like to introduce Mrs Foley who has commenced with us this year as a new Assistant Principal.

Mrs Foley is an experienced school leader and former Instructional Leader. She is really enjoying her

class and is excitedly meeting as many people as she can. Mrs Pont and Mrs Wilson have returned from

maternity leave and are very excited to be back.

We would also like to acknowledge the contribution Miss King, Miss Turner and Mrs Bear have made to

our school. They were employed as a team at a nearby school and we are hearing very positive reports

about their fabulous teaching and relationships with students as they settle in.

Reminders for Parents and Students Whilst we are officially in Week 3, Kindergarten have only been at school for 4 days and Year 1-6 for 7

days. It has been a very busy start to the year.

School supervision commences at 8.30 am. Students are not to be on school grounds prior to this time

unless they are registered with OOSH services. OOSH operating hours are from 6am to 8.30am and

3.00pm to 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Please call 0457 840 313 if you have any queries.

Official hours of attendance at school are from 9:00am to 3:00pm. We often recommend to parents to

aim for 8:55am at the latest to ensure that children have time to come in, see friends and settle prior to

bell time. Students are to be dropped off at the front gates. If you have been called to the school to collect

children or for a meeting please ensure you register by scanning the COVID QR Code on the main entry

With Kindergarten settled they are now joining the K-2 COVID collection time of 2:50pm. Kindergarten

will be collected from the small gate outside the Stage 1 building and Year 1/2 from the main gate. Years

3-6 including 2/3G are collected from the Primary gate at 3:00pm.

Where possible please book appointments and sporting engagements outside of school hours that also

allows travel time.

All School staff are off duty from 3.15pm. Sometimes teachers volunteer their time to remain at school

for meetings, organising or planning lessons. If you have any urgent matters that need to be attended

to, please phone the school on 4968 1539 where our lovely administration staff will be able to assist.

Seesaw messages are not always able to be checked by teachers during the school day. At times

teachers are forced to take leave for life events, personal health or the health of their children. Under

these circumstances staff will not be checking Seesaw. We ask that important information is emailed to

the school [email protected] and not sent via Seesaw so that administration staff are

able to pass on messages to the appropriate person.

Please ensure all contact numbers are up to date. In the event that a parent is very late to pick up their

child and we are unable to contact them we are placed in the position where we need to make contact

with NSW Police and Department of Communities and Justice to hand over duty of care. This can be

very distressing to all parties involved.

School Administration Team COVID has certainly reduced face to face contact in the school and we thought we would take this

opportunity to remind the community of our wonderful staff in Administration. Mrs Freeland is our School

Administration Manager on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Cooksley fulfils these duties on Tuesday

and Wednesday and works as a School Administrative Officer through the week. We also have Mrs

Urquhart and Mrs Johnstone who work part time in the office, preschool and library as School

Administration Officers.

Our team are often the main contacts for students and families in the school, collecting notes, registering

attendance and seeing to students’ health needs. We look forward to when restrictions are lifted and we

can welcome parents and the community back.

Class structures The executive and classroom teachers have worked together to place your child into a class for 2021.

This process takes countless hours and each student was considered for class placement in regards to

their work habits, educational needs, peers and positive friendship groups. At Mayfield West

Demonstration School, we have talented and committed teachers who are supporting each student to

Learn for Life.

Some parents may have noticed that we have straight Kindy, Year 1 and Year 2 classes. This structure

was adopted out of necessity this year due to class size restrictions and numbers. Most of our classes

are extremely full with a number of primary classes with 30 students.

There have been some movements of staff through the school which we see every year. Teachers will

often move across stages and teach throughout the school. These changes occur for a teacher’s

professional development, and renewal and sharing of expertise. It will be increasingly rare in schools

for any teacher to be the Kindergarten teacher and for them to fulfil that assignment for 10 years.

is a limited resource with a high demand that is prioritised by the Learning and Support Team.

Our support staff are:

Mr Morrison – Assistant Principal

Mrs Reynolds – Learning and Support Teacher

Mrs Munro – Learning and Support Teacher

Mrs Thornton – COVID Tutoring Support

Ms Hinchey – School Counsellor
