the petition that is circulating. This petition is not the property of the Leadership of the Timiskaming First Nation, we can only recommend the following option:

1- See the individual responsible for the petition and ask them to remove your name in

your presence.

If for some reason they do not remove your name from the petition your next option is

the following:

1- Send or deliver a written memo stating you want your name remove indicating the date of your request along with your signature and band number to the TFN Lands/

Membership Clerk.

Education Update To all Post-Secondary Students.

If you are an aboriginal woman of First Nation Status, a member of a First Nation commu-nity in Canada, and have recently completed one year of full-time studies at a post-

secondary educational or training institution, you can apply for the 2011 Rose Nolan Schol-arship. The full application must be completed with all required documentation and mailed

Other news: The post-secondary policy is still under review. It is a long process because a

lot of discussions are taking place to try and meet all possible situations. The committee is doing its best to have the policy completed as soon as possible. We must verify that it also

meets the criteria set forth by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development.

Now that we are getting a lot of beautiful weather some people will be heading onto the lakes and

rivers in their boats or pleasure crafts. Staying safe on a boat/pleasure craft is very simple. Follow just a few simple rules, and you will have a great afternoon on the water. But fail to use common sense, and you can put your life in jeopardy.

Always wear a lifejacket or PFD (personal floatation device)

Why? The majority of drowning victims could have been saved if they took the time to wear a life-

jacket. Each person on your boat should wear a PFD that fits them snugly and securely. This simple step really does save lives.

Avoid alcohol

Why? The probability of being injured on the water doubles when alcohol is involved and studies have also shown that the effects of the sun and wind can make you feel as if you've consumed more alcohol than you actually have.

Check the weather forecast before heading out

Why? You need to know what kind of weather you'll be facing. Always check local weather condi-tions for boating safety before departure- TV and radio forecasts are sources of information.

Use common sense and operate responsibly

Why? If you use common sense, you can avoid nearly all boating accidents. Operate your boat at a safe speed at all times, especially in crowded areas. Be courteous of others using the waterways

and obey all boating rules. Be watchful of swimmers and other boaters, and always have a spotter for water-skiers and tube riders. Stay alert, be respectful of buoys, and think before you act.

Never stand up in your small powerboat, canoe, or similar watercraft

Why? Standing up can make a small boat unstable, and can even cause it to capsize.

Take a boating safety course Why? You wouldn't drive a car unless you had taken Driver's Ed...So why would you get on a boat

without learning more about basic boating safety? Boater education requirements vary by province- some require validated completion of at least one boating safety course.

Welcome future Headstart students & parents! We are pleased that you have chosen Kiwetin School for your child’s first years of learning experience as he/she enters the Headstart Program in September 2011. If you have not yet officially registered your child, you can come by the school any working day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and complete the proper forms. You must have the long form of their birth certificate. No child will be able to register without having the parents provide the long form. You must also have their band number and medical card #.

NEW FOR SEPTEMBER 2011:

Headstart will be only ½ day from 8:30-11:30 starting in September. This year was a trial and we found that the full day was too much for the age group. Children were too tired, so Headstart program will be one half day. If you will require daycare services for your child, we recommend that you register

him/her now at Pidaban Child Care Centre as there may be a waiting list.

The tour began with a brief 10 minute video and all the students were engaged. It showed how elec-

tricity worked in the household and its connection to the water dam. Afterwards, we were given hard hats

and earphones for security purposes and to hear our guide, who was speaking into a microphone. We then

went to the generating station to see models of the landscape and dams along the Ottawa River. The stu-

dents were asked who the first people to use the Ottawa River were and explained how it was the Algon-

quins and they were good business people (traders) with the Europeans. Afterwards, the guide explained

the use of certain areas and buttons in the generating station. Students did not have many questions but

they behaved well. We arrived back at Kiwetin School for 12:00 p.m. The students enjoyed it as well as the

teachers. Altogether there were 5 adults and 14 students from grades 5&6. From the grades 7&8, 18 stu-

dents were accompanied by 6 adults!

The impact on the environment were said to be minimal and that Hydro-Quebec does everything they

can to prevent harmful effects. They also keep track of all the pollution and negative impacts to the envi-

ronment Hydro-Quebec causes. At this location, the survival rate for fish is 95% and do not have any fish

ladders while other dams in Quebec do. This dam site was built in 1968.

A big Meegwetch goes out to Carrie McAnaul who has been so helpful with the snack programs

over the past year, as well as the one before. She has applied for the program and managed it. She goes to the grocery store in New Liskeard and picks up the morning and afternoon snacks for the students. She has also been involved with a lot of fundraising this year to make the grades 5/6

trip possible to Toronto in June. She is a very dedicated teacher who always puts the students first on her list. She is a lady of many talents who shares her knowledge with the kids. It is important

to acknowledge people like Carrie. I say thank you on behalf of all the parents and students from Kiwetin for all the extras you do for the school.

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.
