Communications Prayer Holy Spirit,

You blessed the first disciples with the power to spread God’s love throughout the world.

Give me a new power to proclaim your word through my own unique gifts and through the channels of

clear communication.

Make me willing to receive that word as it enters my daily life.

Guide those who send out the message and those who receive it, so that all people may come to know your

truth and be renewed by your love.

Amen

Skoolbag is coming to Sacred Heart Dear Parents/Guardians,

Over the past 12 months there has been much discussion around communication between home and school and how we can make improvements. At one of the parent forums last year the idea of a school app was first flagged. The School Education Board set up a focus team and explored various school apps that could serve our community needs. In term 1 the School Education Board, selected parents, school staff and the e-learning team trialled two school apps. I am pleased to announce we have made a decision and we will be rolling out the Skoolbag School App in the coming weeks.

The Skoolbag app will provide you with an

easy free way to let you know key information about school activities. It will provide you with a

convenient way to receive school notifications and it communicates directly with iPhone, iPad, Android,

and Windows Phones devices. School newsletters, school notices and alerts will be communicated directly

to your smartphone through the Skoolbag app.

Some of the features of Skoolbag include:

alerts

events

news

newsletters

school calendar allowing you to add events directly to your online calendar

links to website pages RSS Feed and Google Calendar integration

Skoolbag will send you alerts and notifications without you having to scroll through the school

newsletter. These can be subscribed to for the year levels of your child/ren. Staff have the ability to

update the status of any event by using the admin tools from a computer or their smart phone. This will

give you instant information for scenarios such as:

The bus is running late from the camp and will be back at 4pm

The school sports is cancelled because of rain

Skoolbag notification will also appear on our school website. You will be able to check alerts and notifications from any computer or device connected to the internet. This feature will be rolled out later this term. We are in a waiting for the app to be uploaded onto both the app store for Apple devices and the playstore for android devices. We will send an email to you when it is available for download on both platforms in the coming weeks. On another note, this newsletter is the main way that the school communicates with you. In 2013 a decision was made to go digital with the school newsletter. Since then we have been working on ways to make this happen. There were some initial issues with a number of parents not able to receive the school emails. To rectify this problem we have been using mailing lists generated from both CareMonkey and our own internal databases. Some of you may be receiving multiple emails, particularly if you have more than one child at the school each with their own CareMonkey profile. Unfortunately sending multiple emails cannot be resolved at the moment and we would ask you to delete the duplicate emails. This is the only way we can ensure all parents and guardians are receiving the school newsletter through email. We have made the decision that it is better for some parents to receive duplication emails than others missing out on this vital information. We believe Skoolbag will provide the missing link in the communication between home and school. I encourage you to install the Sacred Heart Skoolbag App on your personal devices as soon as these have been released. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the discussion and trialling of the two apps. This includes those involved in the parent forum, the staff and e-learning team and School Education Board. What a great idea that came out of the parent forum. A reminder another school forum will be on May 12 and 13. Maybe you will have a suggestion that can make our school community even better. Regards Brian Martin Principal

Mothers’ Day Stall Monday 4 May & Tuesday 5 May

The Mothers’ Day stall is almost here!!! The PA co-ordinates a stall so that our children have the opportunity to purchase gifts that they can select for themselves and surprise mum with. Attached to this email is a list of gifts and prices. These are well priced and the children can buy something nice for mum for under $10. Students will be given the opportunity at selected times including recess to purchase gifts. A maximum of 2 gifts per child will be allowed, to ensure all children have the opportunity to purchase. Once this has occurred, there may be a chance for children to purchase further gifts. The Mothers’ Day stall will be on Monday 4th May from 9:00am and then on Tuesday 5th May at first recess for any children who forgot their money or wish to purchase a second gift (if there are any remaining). We need donations of plastic bags to assist the children once they have made their purchases * * We also need parent helpers to assist with running the stall on these two days * * If you can help, please contact Maria Raucci on 0407 480 250 A list of gifts to purchase is attached to this newsletter. A huge thank you to Maria and Connie for organising the stall.

Mothers’ Day Breakfast Friday 8 May By now you are probably aware that each year, the PA host a Mothers’ Day breakfast in the school hall. Breakfast commences from 7am and finishes at school start time. The proceeds of the stall sales enable us to pay for the

breakfast. Mothers’ Day breakfast is ONLY for Mums / Grandmas / Carers and students;

Dads you will get your turn to have breakfast with your children later in the year for Fathers’ Day when mums will volunteer to cater for the breakfast A form is attached to this newsletter to be completed if you are attending. It is very important that we know numbers for catering purposes. Please note that you will not be able to share breakfast if you have not booked.

Please return your form to the office via your class teacher by Monday, 4th May.

We need dad helpers to assist in the morning please * * On this form is also a return section for

Dads to assist on the morning. We would appreciate your help to cook the BBQ, serve breakfast, clean tables and do dishes (and we so deserve it….. but again remember, we return the favour in September for Fathers’ Day). There will be raffle tickets available for purchase on the day for some beautiful gifts. This is a wonderful tradition at our school and the kids love having a special breakfast with their Mum and their friends as well. Stavroula Katavolos is coordinating the breakfast for the PA, and we very much appreciate her efforts.

EXCURSION – TUESDAY 21ST APRIL RESPONSE TO WHAT WE SAW AND DID ON OUR EXCURSION BY Grade 3 and 4

The aboriginal paintings were painted to tell stories or explain to others about their aboriginal religious beliefs. We learnt to make paint that the aboriginals used on special occasions like a festival or a new born. We learnt to make it by mixing ochre and water and using the paint we drew a picture. We also saw original aboriginal art work and sculptures. We also learnt about the aboriginal’s most common tools and what they were used e.g. the Coolamon is used for storing food or water and a blanket can also be placed in it for a baby to sleep in aka cradle. The 3/4 ‘s learnt about Joseph Brown who collected paintings and donated them to the National Gallery of Victoria. It was really fun.

On our excursion we went to the NGV, and we went to the Joseph Banks collection which was amazing. Next we saw a video of a man making art by painting with mud and a dead bird. Then we had a lesson with a lady called Heather. She showed us the aboriginal shields that the aborigines used to protect themselves. Lots of them have paint on them and after that we looked at paintings from famous artists.

At the Botanical Gardens we made paint using rocks and water then we had a traditional smoking ceremony which was spectacular. After that we learned about weapons that aboriginals used to try to kill animals. Then my class went to a bush that is very difficult to destroy because it is very tall spikey tree called a bunya bunya tree. A long time ago aboriginal men needed to climb the tree without any clothes on to be real men.

On our excursion we went to the National Gallery of Victoria and the Botanical Gardens where we saw lots of amazing things. First we went in to the National Gallery of Victoria where we saw different paintings at the Joseph Banks collection. We looked at contemporary Aboriginal Art and one painting had four blocks of colours that represent a story. The story started when a man was travelling in the desert for a long time and he was really thirsty when he came across two billabong that had polluted water. He was so thirsty he drank the polluted water and then he made a campfire to sleep next to. But he burnt next to the campfire.

We learnt about paintings donated by Joseph Brown at the National Gallery of Victoria. We learnt about aboriginal weapons including shields and spears. At NGV we learnt about marvellous pictures.

The Botanical Gardens We made paint with ochre and we used it to make aboriginal paintings. We learnt about something called a dilly bag made out of animal’s skins such as kangaroos and wombats. We also went to a smoking ceremony.

Jasmine’s arrival to S.H.P.S – Grade 3/4 on 22 April 2015 On Wednesday the 22nd of April, Jasmine Davis (Miss Davis’ sister) came to speak to the grade 3/4s about ANZAC. She spoke to us because on the 25th of April it was the 100th year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing also the first ANZAC day. Jasmine often speaks to people about ANZAC as she won The Premier's Spirit of Anzac Prize competition that is held to select Year 9 or 10 students for an overseas study tour of sites where Australians have served in war, centred on Lemnos, Gallipoli and the Western Front. She told us that ANZAC stands for Australian New Zealand Army Corps, she also reminded us that we can go to marches, parades, and show the ANZAC spirit of comradeship, selflessness, courage, and bravery. We also found out that you can search a soldier who lived in your street or town! We should all remember the ANZACs who fought and died for us in the tragedy of war. We would also like to thank Jasmine for teaching and reminding us about the history of the ANZACs and the importance of ANZAC Day for all Australians.

The Commonwealth Bank School Banking Program is here at Sacred Heart Primary. School Banking is a fantastic way of teaching our children the important skills of saving and money management. Children will have the opportunity to make a deposit into their bank account each week at school and earn some great rewards. If you decided to open an account at a branch, you will need to take in identification for you and your child (driver’s licence or passport and Child’s birth certificate) however, if you complete the form we have given you the school will verify your child’s identity. You will receive a Dollarmites wallet and deposit book that your child will use to participate in the program. If your child already has a CBA account, just send it to school with the deposit (don’t forget to fill out the deposit slip!). Send in your child’s deposits EVERY TUESDAY.
