Executive Conference This week the executive team spent two days engaging in some sustained professional development with the sole purpose of enhancing those skills we need to guide us through the challenges ahead such as Departmental restructuring, the New curriculum, National Standards for teachers and increased regulations in terms of teaching and learning. We invited external speakers to address us, examined our management plan and had some very clear „blue sky thinking‟ on our purpose, practices and products. As a team we meet every Wednesday but this does not provide us with enough time to dig deep with the sort of strategic thinking that is so imperative for moving our school in the right direction. Each head teacher gave up teaching time and personal time to make the most of this event and I thank them on your behalf for their energy, passion and contributions. Athletics Carnival Permission Notes Model Farms High School is a large organisation with many excursions, events and activities happening on a regular basis. These all have educational value and are considered important if we are to develop our children in a holistic manner. The majority of these require parents to pay a nominal fee and provide a permission note so that students can attend. If these two things do not occur then the activity or excursion is in jeopardy. We are usually asked by venues and bus companies to provide numbers one week in advance and if we have not collected enough at that time then we can be placed in a position of having to cancel. If permission notes are not received on time then this places your child‟s safety at risk. Our athletics carnival is on next Thursday the 30th of May and we still have a large number of students who have not paid or returned permission notes. Please check your child‟s bag for the note or simply write a note and send it in on Monday so that we can finalise our arrangements.

FROM THE DEPUTY …

Following the completion of the half yearly examinations, Year 11 students were provided the opportunity to reflect on their results though a social skills lesson developed by Mrs Munroe. Students identified their strengths and weaknesses, reflected on the time spent and methods used in preparation for exams and set goals for themselves for their final Preliminary examination in Term 3. This activity proved to be highly worthwhile as reflection is a key ingredient to improve, that is often overlooked as we move onto our next challenge. Thank you to Mrs Munroe for developing this wonderful activity and to the teachers for supporting its delivery. As is usual with half yearly exams in Year 11, some students will be very pleased with their results, some reasonably satisfied and some disappointed. If you are disappointed, all is not lost. Ask your teachers what you can do to improve, talk to your parents about what needs to change and put together a plan. A favourite couple of quotes of mine are below and are valuable lessons for us all. I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

Michael Jordan In the forthcoming weeks, invitations to recognition breakfasts and assemblies will be sent home, for those students who have performed to a high level during their half yearly examinations. This is an opportunity for the school to recognise the high academic achievement of our students, and celebrate in a casual environment, whilst enjoying breakfast with family. I look forward to all three of these events. I would like to thank the school executive for giving up their time last Wednesday evening to attend a one and a half day conference. The conference was designed to plan for the future at MFHS and to reflect on current practices, particularly with programming and registration to ensure we are in keeping with best practice. Well done to all attendees. Mark Grady Deputy Principal

This week’s news: Maths In Surveying Excursion:

Last Friday a group of Year 10 students attended the „Maths in Surveying Excursion‟ at Homebush Bay. Our students participated in a range of activities with members of the Surveyors Association, engineers from the University of NSW and also hydrographers, both civilian and from the Royal Australian Navy. Geography, science and history were

also integrated into the activities. Our students displayed exemplary behaviour and remained completely focused on all tasks, even at the end of the day were they were all tired. They were an absolute credit to their school. Well done! Mrs Manson

Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions. Fun with Maths: Year 7 will be studying „Integers‟ after their Half Yearly Examinations in week 5. Here is the link to a song that helps students understand the concepts of the number line and positive and negative numbers. It is called the Number Line Dance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EWq9EZmIKg Answer to last week‟s question: There is a one in two chance, because the sex of a child is not determined by that of its siblings. A SUITCASE OF MEMORIES…

This term 7EV are exploring the concept of Memory through the close study of a text titled Hana‟s Suitcase. The book outlines the real-life journey of a young Jewish girl as she is torn from her home town in Czechoslovakia and ultimately from her family as well. 7EV started off the unit by bringing in one object that held special meaning for them and sharing these precious items, along with their stories, with the class. It was great to see the students engage with each other‟s

experiences and we are looking forward to learning more about Hana and what happened to her.

Year 11 Premier’s Metro Debating

The Year 11 Debating team were beaten in a very close debate on Thursday 23rd May by Northmead High School. The topic was “That all juveniles should be given community service instead of a custodial sentence”. It was a hot topic with both teams presenting valid arguments

Miss asked us to bring in an important item and I decided to share this book I won on Presentation Day last year. This was a big day for me because it was one of the last awards I ever won in Primary. It was great to have this show-and-tell so that I could

remember the best bits from Year 6! - Thorne Blackman

Last lesson I brought in my ballet point shoes that I’ve now grown out of. It was fun

learning about everyone’s stories and their prized possessions. I’m really looking forward

to reading about Hana and her story. - Gemma Barnett

It’s always interesting to read about other people and their experiences, especially

young people – children that we can relate to and learn from. I’m eager to see what

happens next… - Lance Van Doorene

Drama at the Farms

Another productive week for our Drama students!

Year 12 is hard at work playbuilding and working toward their Stage 1 Group Performance Assessment in Week 7.

Year 11 are devising their ensemble performance that satirises the nature of truth of truth in

society and the tangled web a company of liars can weave.

Year 10 is hard at work studying the practitioner Tadashi Suzuki and his techniques of grounding

the performer through control and tension through the body. They are exploring the condition of

MS and have composed insightful and heartfelt moments for their audience. These students are preparing for a big term of auditions that is fast approaching. The West Sydney Region Drama Festival, Celebrating the Arts Festival and Pulse auditions are all being held this term for our

talented cohort.

Year 9 is working solidly on their scripted Drama performances studying the play Small Poppies. They have adapted the play for a contemporary audience and implanted their

own quirks and modern day translations to engage their audience and challenge their skills as young performers.

IT IS HERE!!! The Language Perfect World Championships for 2013 have begun! Our French and Japanese students have been busily typing away, improving their language skills and vying for some really great prizes! We have been very fortunate to have been given a free trial of this program and so far it has proven a real hit with the students and teachers alike. Gone are the days of long vocabulary lists to learn by rote! After logging in, students choose their language and either a visual or aural presentation of the words, earning points for any correct answers. There is immediate feedback and students can see where they are coming in the class and the school on the topics we are covering in class. Keep working at it everyone! There is a World Champion amongst you, I am sure! Stay tuned for our winner of the iPod Shuffle in the next week! You've got to be in it to win it! Virginia Leghorn

Attendance and Reports

As many years complete their half yearly exams, staff are starting to prepare students half yearly reports. This includes compiling the attendance data that is included on these reports. Below are the reporting period dates for each year to be used on the half yearly reports. Please ensure that all absence notes are returned promptly so that your child does not have any unexplained absences on their reports. The DEC policy is that if an explanation is not received within 7 days it is supposed to remain unjustified but still explained. Thus returning notes to school before the 7 days is up is extremely important. NOTES RECEIVED FOR THESE DATES (ABOVE) AFTER REPORTS ARE COMPLETED, WILL BE UPDATED BUT REPORTS WILL NOT BE REPRINTED.

News - Etiquette Lunch -

On Wednesday the 22nd of May all three support classes participated in their first etiquette

lunch.

Prior to the lunch, through their study of etiquette in Health class, the students were

required to create a placemat clearly labeling a place setting. The students learned how to

properly set a table and then how to conduct themselves whilst dining.

The students set their own place setting, made a selection from the menu and displayed all of the manners required of any successful dining experience. Ms Ljubicic must be commended for her dedication, organization and commitment to ensuring this learning experience became the success that it was!
