DVAR TORAHSHAVUOTThe holiday of Shavuot commemorates the anniversary ofour receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai. The Torah is ourblueprint and instruction manual for life itself and thesource of our spiritual freedom. The Jewish peoplereceived their physical freedom on Passover but had to waitseven full weeks until they were ready to receive the Torah. During this interim period, the Jewish people toiledconstantly on their attributes until they became spirituallytransformed from a nation of slaves to G-d's chosen people.

We also read the Book of Ruth on Shavuot. One ofthe reasons that we read the Book of Ruth is becauseShavuot is the birthday and Yahrzheit of King David. KingDavid's matriarchal ancestor was Ruth, who was arighteous convert and Moabite princess who preferred toleave her exalted status and position in order to join theJewish people. Ruth was known for tremendous acts ofdevotion, kindness and goodness to her mother-in-law,Naomi. She eventually married a relative of Naomi, Boaz, who was head of the "Sanhedrin - Jewish Religious HighCourt." Even though Boaz died on their wedding night, from this union she gave birth to a child, Ovad, who wasthe grandfather of King David.

SHAVUOT MISHMARPrior to our receiving the Torah on the first Shavuot, G-dcaused the weather to be perfect so that we would sleepdeeply in order to have the strength to receive G-d'spresence and to receive the Torah. Much to ourembarrassment, we all overslept and almost missedreceiving the Torah. To make amends and to show Hashemour love for him, many Jews remain awake all night on thefirst night of Shavuot, studying different passages of Torahat a Mishmar, literally an all night watch or vigil. Comejoin us at our Mishmar as we explore the revelationexperience.

THE THREE WEEKS AND THE NINE DAYS“Bain Ha’metzariim - Between the Narrows,” is how oursages refer to the three week period between the fast of“Shiva Asar B’Tamuz - The seventeenth of Tammuz,” andbetween the fast of “Tisha B’av - The ninth day of Av.” This year the fast of the seventeenth day of Tammuz fallson Tuesday, July 19. The period is one of profoundsadness and bad luck when the Jewish peoplecommemorate the breaching of the walls of Jerusalemwhich eventually led to the destruction of the secondTemple. In fact, both Temples were destroyed on TishaB’av.

As this is a period of bad luck and mourning, weavoid going to civil court or entering into business dealsthat are other than routine. We also refrain frompleasurable activities such as live performances, plays, operas, musicals, movies or listening to music. We also donot cut our hair or nails. While some do not eat meat, drinkwine, swim or bathe in hot water for the entire three week

period, most Ashkenazic Jews are lenient until the ninedays between Rosh Chodesh Av and Tisha B’av. This year,Rosh Chodesh Av is on Monday, August 1. As we do nothave public displays of mourning on Shabbat, we eat meatand drink wine on Shabbat even during the nine days. Tisha B’av is Monday night August 8 and Tuesday August9.
