Autumn Newsletter 2017 03
Group 1 have had a fantastic time studying sustainability in Geography. We particularly enjoyed learning about recycling. We designed and created our own toys made entirely out of recycled materials. We had lots of fun, and the toys we made were really good!
I made a spider out of cardboard and old bits of art materials. I turned a box into a bus.Jacob made a robot
froma shoe box.
I turned an old cereal box into a dolls house.
We couldn’t wait to show off all our hard work! Well done group 1!
This term in group 2, the class have really enjoyed our Lego Therapy sessions. Lego Therapy is an activity which encourages our pupil’s speaking and listening skills as well as practising teamwork and turn taking. The students have worked in small groups and over the term have progressed to making some very complex models out of Lego. We are looking forward to continuing these sessions after Christmas.

This term Group Three have enjoyed some fantastic reward trips linked to their behaviour. Last half term students were rewarded with a wonderful trip to the Cinema, attending the Intu film festival at the Didsbury Cineworld Cinema. We all enjoyed watching the classic film ‘Wonder Woman’ and we were well looked after by the attentive cinema staff.
This half term, behaviour has been just as exemplary; as a consequence students earned points to attend a second reward trip to Bramhall Hall. Students were able to draw on their knowledge of the Tudors and made some really insightful contributions whilst participating in the guided tour. They also played a variety of instruments from the period and even made their own wattle and daub walls. Thank you to all the staff at Bramhall Hall for making the trip so special for us.

ScienceBy Group 5
In science this term, Group 5 have been looking at sound. We had lots of fun making our own plastic cup telephones. We tried different string and wool to see which was the best. Some of us tried hard to think about how the sound travelled down the string as vibrations, while others tried really hard to use the phones, taking turns to talk and listen to a partner. Great work Group 5!

Group 6 have worked especially hard in Forest School this term. We have loved getting outdoors and exploring the environment around our school. We have explored trees outside and brought this into the classroom by making our own friendship tree using paints. We even collected our own sticks from outside to make a frame! We have also collected leaves to make some beautiful leaf collages. I am sure you will agree our forest art work fantastic!

Room on the BroomBy Group 8
This term, group 8 have been reading the book of ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. We have had lots of fun dressing up as the characters from the book as well using our colourful semantics to understand the story too! The use of colourful semantics has helped us sequence the story and recognise key themes as well as using our props to help role-play key characters. We are looking forward to our next book in the spring term!

Group 10 have really engaged with their ‘Magnet and Springs’ module in Science this term. We’ve enjoyed seeing which magnets are the strongest as well as what marvellous tricks the magnets can do. We were even able to make a car move without touching it!

Group 15 organised the children in need events and were supported really well by all the students and staff around school.
Group 15 baked cakes and biscuits and organised a raffle and a bring and buy stall, there were lots of bargains to be had and everyone found something that they liked.
As part of one of our mini enterprises the students also sold pickles and preserves that they had made in their lessons leading up to the event, we will also be selling some at the end of the winter assembly.
We would like to thank each and everyone of you for helping to support this event and we are absolutely delighted to tell you we made £386.51

The students in Group 11 have been focusing on team work in their PSHE lessons and PLATS time. At the end of each day the students have worked in small groups, with some adult support, to complete a 1000 piece Disney jigsaw puzzle. They have worked very hard and all demonstrated great communication skills and perseverance. Here is the finished product!
English - Group 12Group 12 have worked on the books ‘Peter Pan’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’. They have enjoyed listening to and learning about both of the books, and we did some fantastic work for our ‘Peter Pan’ display board. We worked together on making some ‘Wizard of Oz’ character puppets too, which were great to play with and use afterwards. Fabulous work Group 12!

Each student has been supported to make Christmas cakes and chocolate yule logs to sell to staff at Piper Hill. We had a very long order list and have worked really hard to make the cakes, ice and decorate them ready for sale!
Students have been encouraged to be creative, original and have some fun with their designs.
