Dear Parents and Caregivers I hope you had a nice weekend and were able to get out and about as a family to enjoy some of the fine weather. The Jiddle’s Block is now largely complete and the builders have left our site. The Project Manager and the architects have now reviewed the work and compiled what is known as a “snag” list of things they would like adjusted, redone or tidied up. This should take a week I would anticipate at the most and then we will be free to move back into the block. Over the coming few months as we become comfortable with the new environment we will continue to change the furniture and additional equipment will arrive. This is a similar process to the one we applied to the senior block and allows us to understand how things will have to change and adapt before committing funding to it. At present our senior leadership and the Board are finalising planning for staffing, classes and rooms for the coming year. This is an intense time as there are always lots of things to consider and work through. In any school there are a mixture of permanent and fixed term teachers as well as teacher aides and other support staff. We have had a few of our permanent staff on leave for various reasons and as they move back into their teaching roles, those in fixed term positions obviously find themselves in need of a new position, perhaps at another school. Naturally, we like to keep staff long term as they generally make a real impact in their time with us, however this is not always possible which is hard. Over the next day or two I will send out letters to those parents who indicated an interest in purchasing a chrome book for their child. I have 15 of these arriving this week and these will be available for immediate purchase to those who choose the one payment option. For parents of any child who will be in year 5 to 8 next year but have not sent a reply in do not worry as I will be ordering more before the end of year if demand warrants it. As we get close to the end of the year there is a tendency for some students to “relax” and worry less about the guidelines that support our daily school lives. I would appreciate you chatting at home about this and ensuring your child(ren) understand the need to stay focussed right through to the last day. Of course I understand for our youngest students there is a degree of tiredness and so early nights are pretty important. The last few weeks of school are always busy with lots of fun and for our year 8’s it is a time of reflection, anticipation and often some sadness as the realisation of the end of their Pongakawa years. As always I am really keen for the end of year to be a special time full of great memories as it usually is Have a great week Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

SUNHATS Sunhats are compulsory in line with our

School Policy for Summer. Please make sure your child has one everyday.

Health Check - IMPORTANT Please check your child/ren for head lice.

We are having constant reoccurrences which need to be addressed. Treating with recommended treatments and combing through the hair with a fine toothed comb is essential. Retreatment is meant to kill any surviving hatched lice before they produce new eggs. For some drugs, retreatment is recommended routinely about a week after the first treatment (7–9 days), depending on the type of treatment used. Note that My Pharmacy in Te Puke also gives our school 10% discount for treatments as well.

Worming children and adults Worms in the body block our digestive track, rob us of nutrients and stop the digestive system from functioning. Tapeworm is not the only worm that affects our digestive system, there are several types of worms that can cause problems, including whip worms, thread worms, hook worms and round-worms. Some symptoms may include: An itchy bottom, general irritability and behavioural changes, trouble sleeping, or restless sleep, sometimes resulting in bed-wetting or a sudden lack of appetite. How infections can occur: Walking barefoot in the garden, playground or any infected soil; for example, hookworm larvae burrow through the skin of bare feet. Ingesting worm eggs through eating fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and meat contaminated with roundworm or whip worm. Washing fruits and vegetables with contaminated water. Transfer of the parasitic worms from pets to owner. Coming in contact with the soil that has been contaminated with human faeces from an infected person. Not washing hands with soap and water after defecating. Contact your local pharmacy to discuss worming treatments.
