AUGUST 14TH, 2016 With power greater than a herd of wild elephants and a roar louder than that of many lions, a certain beast devas-tates whatever land he touches and everything on it. Not animate but certainly alive, I refer to a forest fire. We fear it and we fight it and are emoonally wrecked when some of our best firefighters succumb to it. Yet, when fire is confined or tamed to a taper, we delight in its warmth and are grateful for its glow across a dinner table. All of this talk about the two sides of fire comes to us as we hear Our Lord speak so passionately about wanng to light a fire of enthusiasm for change. But that’s what He wants–and sll does. He wants to “burn off” the crust of cynicism that oen forms over our smoky ways of think-ing. Add to that His wish to eradicate sin that haunts our world and harms our hearts. He wants to let the light in. Jesus knows as well as anyone that this involves change. He also knows that we don’t like change. Even the menon of change can upset people. But as God he always knows what is best for us. It is disconcerng to hear the frustraon in His voice when He praccally shouts: “How I wish!” He knows He has to appeal to our free will, which is risky business. He accepts and respects that fact. But, on a strictly human level, it must have been frustrang for Him to see how the resistance to His message won out in the hearts of many. Sll, there was that one small group of souls who must have brought Him comfort. They were the ones who really heard Him. They believed in Him. They let Him know that not all was lost and that He brought a new per-specve to human living. They are our ancestors in faith. So where does that leave us? May I suggest, on this summer Sunday, that we can be in a good place most of the me if we make two responses to Jesus. The first is to make an honest inventory, outside of the one we make in Lent, of all our past responses to our bapsmal calling to imitate Him and spread His message to others. Aer all, on our bapsmal day, His life melded with ours. He adopt-ed us and welcomed us into His Church. He cketed us for heaven. The second response to Jesus is a more pleasant one: namely to be proud and grateful for our membership in the Church. That fact permits us to have a spiritual moth-er in Mary, whom we are invited to honor tomorrow as we celebrate her summerme feast marking her miracu-lous bodily assumpon into heaven. We always honor Jesus when we honor His Mother. Sciensts tell us that wildfires actually benefit certain plant species by spurring their growth. That is a certain less obvious outcome to balance the fire’s destruc-ons. The kind of spiritual fire sparked by Christ’s love has only posive effects. What a gi! What potenal that fire unlocks in us when it catches! The last thing you want to do is block it with some self-devised firewall. Reflection by, Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Renovaon of the Sacrises

I have been working with our parishioner, Louis DiCocco, on a project to renovate the sacrises. Demolion work has begun, and is scheduled to take a few weeks to com-plete. The paneling has been removed and replaced with dry wall, a new drop ceiling will be installed along with a new lighng system, cabinets, closets and work space. We are able to connue to invest in our parish campus because of the generosity of parishioners who give to the Parish Improvement Fund. Thank you for all you do to support our great parish of SFDS.

New Altar and Ambo

The Holy Eucharist is the source and summit of the life of a Catholic Parish. Everything we do as a parish should flow out of our Eucharisc Liturgies; and everything we do as a parish should lead us back to the Eucharist. The altar in a Catholic Church is the heart and center of the enre life of the parish community.

I have been working with our parishioner, Louis DiCocco, to commission a new altar to enhance the beauty of the focal point of our church. In addion, a new matching ambo (or pulpit) has also been commissioned. Last fiscal year, the Ladies Club presented me with a check for $10,000; and the previous year a check for $13,000. The work of the Ladies Club Members and the parishioners’ support of their efforts have made it possible for this en-hancement of our beauful church. Each one of us can have a sense of ownership in our new altar. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.

PRAYER FOR OUR NATION O most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most

crucial me, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care. Most Holy Mother, we beg you to reclaim this land for the glory of your Son. Overwhelmed with the

burden of the sins of our naon, we cry to you from the depths of our hearts and seek refuse in your motherly pro-

tecon. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilies that accompany hu-

man freedom. Free us from the falsehoods that lead to the evil of aboron. Grant our country the wisdom to proclaim that God’s law is the foundaon on which this naon was founded, and that He alone is the True Source of our cher-ished rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. O Merciful Mother, give us the courage to reject the “culture

of death” and lead us into the new Millennium of life. Amen
