PRINCIPAL ’S NEWS

WELCOME BACK Welcome back to all within our school community after the mid-year holidays. It has been a very smooth start to the school term and I am very impressed with how our students have settled back into the school routine.

DEFIBRILLATOR This week I am happy to inform the school community we have installed a defibrillator within our school to be used in the unlikely event that a member of our school community was to have a life-threatening cardiac issue. Our vast majority of staff have current First Aid qualification which is provided by the school. I know that in recent years the use of a defibrillator is now a crucial part of the training. The school has purchased a defibrillator for not only adults but also children under the age of 8 years.

ATHLETICS CARNIVALS Next week will be a very busy week as our students participate in the annual Athletics Carnivals. The events are as follows:

SENIORS—Tuesday (Year 4 - 6 for Field Events) and Wednesday (Year 3—6 for Track Events)

JUNIORS—Thursday (Prep – Year 2)

The timetable for the Athletics Carnivals are included in this newsletter and will also be shared through the usual communication channels and are approximate guide regarding time of events. Students are encouraged to dress in their Sporting House colours on Wednesday (Seniors) and Thursday (Juniors) and are to be reminded that sun safe clothing is it to be worn. * Just a reminder that Interschool School Sport will recommence in Week 8 of this term for the Summer Season. Information and trials will occur in the weeks leading up to the commencement of the Summer Season.

C&K BURLEIGH HEADS KINDERGARTEN AND PRESCHOOL TALK This Monday evening I have accepted an invitation to talk to parents of prospective and confirmed parents of 2019 prep students at the local C&K Burleigh Heads Kindergarten and Preschool. The brief I have been given is “School Readiness” and I am looking forward to meeting many of the parents who will be attending our prep in 2019. As with each year we will be holding our annual Prep Open Days for 2019 prep students to familiarise themselves with the prep environment. The prep open days are being held on:

Friday August 10th (9-10am)

Friday October 12th (9-10am)

ART SHOW DATE CLAIMER This year’s Art Show date is Thursday September 13 and the theme for the student competition is “Memory”.

2019 DRESS CODE CHANGE To ensure adequate time to prepare and plan for the future purchase of school shoes I am writing to inform the school

community of the requirement for all students to wear all black shoes from 2019 onwards. Families will still have the flexibility in purchasing leather or sport shoes as long as they are all black in colour. As a school I cannot recommend locations to purchase shoes but I shall provide further information in upcoming months regarding the types of all black shoes that will meet the school’s requirements.

Welcome back to term three and another exciting ten weeks of learning. We welcome our new families to the Burleigh Heads school community and please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions about our school.

I hope that the holidays were a time for relaxation and a chance to catch up with some family time.

This term is a busy one with a number of fantastic activities for all. I am looking forward to our fantastic Art Show, Inter-House Sporting Carnivals, Eisteddfod, Prep Open Day, Japanese Study Tour, excursions for a number of year levels, Life Education and Summer Interschool Sport, to mention just a few of the events. INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVALS Next week we will be holding our annual Inter-House Athletics Carnivals. Field Events for years 4—6 on Tuesday, Track Events for years 3—6 on Wednesday and Junior Sports’ Carnival Prep – Year 2 on Thursday. Look for further information on our Facebook page. I look forward to these events as I know so many children just love the opportunity to take their energy onto the sporting field. Remember to mark the Athletics Carnivals on your calendar as the days are fun-filled and there is nothing like a good audience to bring out the best of performances.

Students are encouraged to wear their house colours, wear a hat and bring a water bottle. PREP ENROLMENTS FOR 2019 ARE NOW OPEN Due to the high number of inquiries about enrolment for prep 2019 we have opened the books earlier this year. If you have a child born July 2013 to June 2014 then they will be eligible to attend school. Please make contact with the office. If you are a new family to the school then evidence of residency in the school catchment will be necessary. Siblings will not require proof of residency.

Students who wish to enrol from outside our catchment can be placed on a waiting list. (All students on the waiting list last year were able to attend as we have places for 100 students in prep.) PARENT TEACHER INTERVIEWS

Semester 1 reports went home at the end of Term 2. Over the next few weeks teachers will be conducting parent teacher interviews. These are valuable opportunities for parents and teachers to discuss individual student progress. Please contact your child’s/children’s class teacher if you would like an interview. Parents are encouraged to take the opportunity to attend the interviews. EVERY DAY COUNTS As we begin Term 3, parents are reminded of the importance of sending children to school every day on time. Being at school every day counts, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a year.

Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year. More information on the importance of regular school attendance is available at http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/index.html

Hello School Families, I just want to thank everyone who attended the “Christmas in July’ Chaplaincy Fundraiser Dinner last night at Burleigh Surf Club. We had 38 people representing our wonderful school at Burleigh and our Principal Peter Tong gave a great talk on the current issues facing students and the need for support, not only from the Chaplain but from a team perspective. There were Cent Auctions, Lucky Door Prizes, Silent Bidding Auctions and entertainment, which some of our people were the recipients of lovely prizes. We enjoyed a tasty turkey and ham baked dinner with pavlova or steamed pudding for desert with 110 people representing four schools – Miami Primary, Miami High, Merrimac High and our school Burleigh Heads State School. Thank you for your support and enjoy this quote:

“The best portions of a good life are the little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love we do for others.”

Kind regards Chappy Jo

SCHOOL SERVICES AND INFORMATION

ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you’re not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. Please contact the school by email [email protected] to update your details.

UPDATE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS

If medication is prescribed by a student's medical practitioner and required to be administered at school or during school-approved activities, a teacher or other adult person on the school staff (authorised by the principal) may accept responsibil ity to give the medication.

Instructions should be written on the medication container by the pharmacist at the medical practitioner’s direction. This needs to indicate specific times at which medication is to be administered, as well as the quantity and a written request from a parent/caregiver is required at all times.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

ABSENCES

We ask all parents to ensure that their children attend school regularly and on time as no child can make steady progress if frequent absences interrupt his/her schooling. Whenever your child is absent from school class teachers should receive a note explaining the absence. This helps identify truancy situations which occur on rare occasions and assists in ensuring children ’s greater security. Where a prolonged absence is anticipated, notification to this effect would be valued. No child is permitted to leave the school or playground during school time without a note from parents. Arrangements are to be approved by the Principal. Late Arrival Late students must collect a Late Slip from the office. Note: A student’s learning is disadvantaged if they are continually late for school.

Early departure No child is permitted to leave the grounds at any time unless a note has been written by a parent/guardian or a parent makes a personal request to an administrator. Students must be signed out at the office and collected from their class by a parent/carer.
