BIG GREEN SCHOOLS CONFERENCE

On Wednesday the second Big Greens Schools Conference for 2014 was held at St Louis Primary School in Aspendale. A large number of schools in the City of Kingston took part. The eight students who represented our school and did a fantastic job were: Hunter C, Matt C, Katelyn G, Miah F, Chelsea M, Fletcher L, Kai K and Andy S. The main task for the group was to design and construct a ‘green’ model of our local railway station for the future.

Thanks to Mr Milgate for preparing the students prior to the conference, and to Mrs Shipham and Mrs Knighton for their help and support on the day. Below is a photo of the model the students constructed and presented to all other schools who attended the conference.

RoboCup Junior Winners

Miha M, Fletcher L, Valen P and Nicholas S from Year 6 recently competed in the Victorian State Robotic championships held at Melbourne Uni. They competed in Robotic Dance Theatre. They built and programmed seven robots, 4 NXT and 3 RCX robots to act out a hip hop dance battle between 4 dogs in the kennels, when all the humans of course had gone home. The robots performed timed movements to the music. Two robots programs used sonic sensors that changed their programming at the wave of the boys’ hands or feet to complete a new sequence of programming. They had a kennel with revolving flies and a flying bat with a robot controlled hinged door. At the precise moment it opened to let out a new dog to enter the dance battle. This robot also used a light sensor that could find and follow a black line.

The degree of engineering and use of sensors were enough to get us through to the play offs. We came runners up only losing by ½ a point. Well done boys. This competition was the biggest RoboCup Junior State championship since they began 15 years ago. We have been competing since 2000.

What did the boys learn from this experience? In their own words:

Nicholas S: Working as a team and supporting each other.

Miha M: Engineering! Getting my ideas to work.

Valen P: Programming because it was like solving puzzles.

Fletcher L: Following in my two older brothers footsteps with robotics with Mrs. B and having fun.

Students joined ‘Live ABC Splash Event’

Wednesday 2:00pm EST

Yesterday, the Watch Dogs, our RoboCup Junior school team, with a friend each and selected students from Year 2 participated in a live ABC Splash event on robotics. They viewed live streamed TV as well as participating in simultaneous online chat. Nicholas S even had his question read out and answered during the show! These students have now accepted the ‘Challenge’ and will invent robots that may become part of the online resources for schools across Australia. They will work with Mrs Bearup to complete this challenge.
