PRINCIPAL ’S NEWS

SEMESTER 2 REPORT CARDS

The Semester 2 Report Cards will be emailed to the primary contact within the OneSchool system on Monday 10th December. If your email address has changed recently please check if your email is updated with the school office so that your child/ren’s report card can be successfully emailed.

I encourage parents to contact their child/ren’s teacher for any queries/clarifications regarding their child/ren’s report card.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

At the time of writing this newsletter the students are participating in the annual swimming carnival. This event is an enjoyable event despite the competitive elements as the respective 4 houses gather the final house points before the announcement of this year’s winning house on Wednesday next week.

An addition to this year’s carnival will be an assessment of swimming ability for all students who wish to undertake surfing in 2019. The ability to swim 50m unaided will be a prerequisite for undertaking surfing in 2019 to ensure that students have a minimal swimming competency to undertake surfing.

I look forward to enjoying the day and seeing our students display exemplary house spirit throughout the day.

CLASS PLACEMENTS 2019

In planning for 2019 it is apparent on current numbers that we are likely to start with 20 classes but it is not out of the realms of possibility that we may actually reach 21 classes. Therefore the TENTATIVE CLASS PLACEMENTS that will be released later next week will be even more tentative than has been in recent years. At this stage I have planned for 20 classes for the commencement of 2019 but if Day 8 numbers indicate that we have 21 classes we will have to make changes to accommodate the extra class. I should have a better indication after the first week of the 2019 school year and will communicate with the school community at this time.

DATE CLAIMER FOR 2019

The first day of school in 2019 is Tuesday 29th January following the designated Australia Day holiday on the 28th January. The school office will re-open on the 21st for shortened days with opening hours to be shared next week.

STUDENT/PARENT CURRENT CONTACT NUMBERS, EMAIL AND HOME ADDRESSES If your contact details have changed, please ensure that the school office has been informed of the latest information — emergency contact details are essential. It is advisable to have several contact numbers in order to support students in the event that parents are unable to be reached. This is essential both at school and when students are participating in excursions and school camps. Can I also ask that you update your email address. End of semester reports will be sent home via email so please ensure these are current. LOST PROPERTY As it is close to the end of the school year, the lost property pile has grown bigger. Please check regularly the water bottles, lunch boxes and hats your child/children bring home in case they have mistakenly picked up someone else’s property. All lost property is kept in the old hall near the music room, please have your children check there if they have missing items of clothing etc. REPORT CARDS Semester Two Report Cards will be emailed home next week. Over recent years, parents, students and teachers have become more familiar with a 5 point A-E scale in all Queensland State Schools. I would like to remind everyone that the system which Queensland schools use, refers to attainment standards called "benchmarks of achievement" or "criteria". So what makes an "A", "B", "C" etc is predetermined by a scale of achievement. A student, who shows evidence of meeting a particular level deserves that benchmark grade. For example this is what parents could consider a "C" really means: A "C" means that the student has met the criteria for a learner to be, at the appropriate year level. A "C" means that the student is doing what is required at their Year Level at school. The best description is to say that a "C" means that the student's academic development is exactly where it is appropriate to be. That means attaining a "C" for Achievement means the student is ON TARGET for their age level. With this in mind, it is perhaps time for some of us to accept that it may be harder for our students to get an "A" or "B". These grades are not awarded simply to the top students in the class. They are only given to students, who demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge, understanding and application of processes, at a high or very high standard and in a range of contexts. SO What does this all mean? * We are more likely to see more "C" grades on student reports. * A "C" for Achievement indicates that your student is "On Target" for their age. (This grade should be celebrated with students because it means they have worked hard to be where they need to be.) * The "Effort" grades are also important because they are a reflection of how, in the teacher’s opinion, the student is working consistently in class in that learning area. Should you wish to clarify any aspect of your child’s Semester Two Report, please negotiate a mutually convenient time with the classroom teacher. At Burleigh Heads, we are working hard to ensure that for your child, learning, growing and achieving occurs every day. GRADUATION EVENING – Monday 10th December Our team of dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff are busy making preparations for the Year 6 Graduation evening which is held on Monday the 10th of November. Final touches to catering, decorations, presentations and schedules are in progress. We are just as excited as the students for this milestone to arrive. I have had a few questions about dress code. My suggestion is smart dinner attire. Students need to be comfortable in what they are wearing for both the dinner and disco that follows. I’m excitedly looking forward to seeing this group of leaders walk across the stage. It’s such a proud moment for our school and our parent community. AWARDS CEREMONY – Wednesday 12th December Our annual Awards Assembly will be held at 9.00am on Wednesday the 12th of December. This is a special assembly for our school to celebrate the achievements of our Year 6 students. Special awards are also given out to students from Year 3 to Year 5, including Instrumental and Strings. Your child’s teacher will notify you if he or she is receiving an award on this day so you can make arrangements to attend. CHRISTMAS CONCERTS – Wednesday 12th December The festive Burleigh Christmas Concerts will commence at 11.30am on Wednesday. Year 3 to 6 will present their Christmas songs between 11.30am and 1.00pm. The P – 2 cohort will commence their concert at 1.30pm. All parents are welcome to attend.

Transition to Prep 2019 Getting to know our new students and their families It is now easier for our new families to share your child’s Kindergarten transition statement with the school. The statements are a great way for our Prep teachers to get to know the children in their class before the first day, so they can prepare to welcome them and plan for their ongoing learning and development. Kindergarten teachers, parents, carers and children develop transition statements together near the end of the kindy year. The transition statement is a snapshot of each child’s strengths, interests and learning through kindy. Families will receive their child’s transition statement with the transition statement parent/carer consent form. By signing the form parents and carers can now give their consent for transition statements to be forwarded to a child’s new school and outside school hours care service directly from kindergartens. We will be in touch with local services to ensure our email address is known to the kindergarten teachers to receive the transition statements. SCHOOL SERVICES AND INFORMATION

ARE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS UP TO DATE – INCLUDING EMERGENCY CONTACTS We have been experiencing a number of students presenting to sick bay with serious illnesses/injuries to warrant the school needing to urgently contact a parent/guardian or an emergency contact but with no success. Could you please make sure that your contact details are up to date and ensure your emergency contacts are available if you’re not able to be contacted. This is especially important for when parents are travelling away during the school term and leaving students with guardians. Please contact the school by email [email protected] to update your details.

UPDATE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS

If medication is prescribed by a student's medical practitioner and required to be administered at school or during school-approved activities, a teacher or other adult person on the school staff (authorised by the principal) may accept responsibil ity to give the medication.

Instructions should be written on the medication container by the pharmacist at the medical practitioner’s direction. This needs to indicate specific times at which medication is to be administered, as well as the quantity and a written request from a parent/caregiver is required at all times.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

ABSENCES

We ask all parents to ensure that their children attend school regularly and on time as no child can make steady progress if frequent absences interrupt his/her schooling. Whenever your child is absent from school class teachers should receive a note explaining the absence. This helps identify truancy situations which occur on rare occasions and assists in ensuring children ’s greater security. Where a prolonged absence is anticipated, notification to this effect would be valued. No child is permitted to leave the school or playground during school time without a note from parents. Arrangements are to be approved by the Principal. Late Arrival Late students must collect a Late Slip from the office. Note: A student’s learning is disadvantaged if they are continually late for school.

Early departure No child is permitted to leave the grounds at any time unless a note has been written by a parent/guardian or a parent makes a personal request to an administrator. Students must be signed out at the office and collected from their class by a parent/carer.
