Principal’s Pen Parenting Wisely A survey of children was undertaken to consider the food choices their school canteen would offer. Whilst there were a few who made wise and healthy choices, most elected for what they considered tasted good. Usually their choices were high in sugar, fats and salts – and generally pretty terrible for their long term health. But they responded upon impulse and what they considered was ‘best’. Naturally, the school did not allow their requests to dictate the outcome. But it is the type of scenario that each of us can face each day. As parents, sometimes we can find it easy to take our hands off the wheel, and place important decisions in the hands of our children who act out of limited experience. Children tend to change their minds frequently, react to peer pressure, and make decisions based on short-term results. As a father, grandfather, principal and educator, I know first-hand that firm but loving guidance is what is essential. As parents, this is our God given role. When our children show trustworthiness and make wise choices, we can allow their decision making influence to be widened. This tends to happen as they prepare to leave the security of home and take wings for life beyond school. It is of concern that I have noticed an increasing number of families who allow their children to prematurely make important decisions. That sends alarm bells off for me. If we allow our children to dictate where they go to school, who they spend unlimited time with, what they watch, listen to or invest in, the results long term can be disastrous. As wise parents, looking to their future and drawing on our experience and wisdom is essential. If we allow a child to eat nothing but ice cream and sausage rolls, they will inevitably be obese, have resultant health issues and consequences they will endure for life. We know the wisdom of avoiding such things, but I challenge each of us to look at other ways we forsake our role as protectors of these special ones God has placed in our care. My prayer is that you will have courage as parents to take tough stands when you need to. That your love for your children will consider what is best long term, and not just what buys short term peace. Allowing them to make important decisions prematurely usually comes back to bite us. However, by utilising your wisdom, they will thank you in the end for loving them with boundaries that were God given.

Year 12 PathwaysCornerstone Christian College is delighted to introduce Jarrod Mustchin, our latest student to have obtained Certificate level qualifications. Jarrod, who is coming to the end of Year 12, recently completed his Certificate II in Building and Construction in partnership with the Trade Training Centre. The result is that he has been offered an Apprenticeship which he will commence after graduation.Jarrod is very appreciative of the opportunities this has presented. ‘Doing my Cert II has helped me get an apprenticeship, as it has allowed me to learn the skills I need in the workplace. Finishing it has set me up for a future in Carpentry’, he said.As part of the changes to WACE, Cornerstone will be extending Vocational Training in 2015 to include a Certificate II in Hospitality. This will see the College accessing the Trade Training Centre’s Commercial Kitchen. This of course is additional to the many other training options that are conducted right here on site at the College.

Uni CampLast week, our current Year 11s travelled to Perth and have spent time at University campuses to see what they have on offer. They got to see learning unfolding, look at housing and talk with former students who are currently studying. A terrific initiative that helps prepare our senior students for the next phase in their education. Thanks to Miss Needham for her organisation and enthusiasm, and for the students who embraced this opportunity.

Year 6 & Year 12 UniformsWhilst the summer uniform is currently in use, this is to remind Year 6 and Year 12 students and parents that they still need a properly fitted winter uniform for one more occasion this year. The Presentation Nights for these students require graduates to have their full formal winter uniform being worn. Please ensure you don’t sell it off just yet, and also make sure that dress lengths are correct before the night. Thanks!

IMPORTANT : Device Roll-out 2015On Monday November 10 at 7:00pm, all parents of students currently in Years 4-7 (who have children in Years 5-8 in 2015) are requested to attend an important and exciting meeting. We will outline our plans for next year with the 1:1 device roll-out for students. We will be unveiling our plan for IT for 2015 and beyond, and believe that students and parents will want to be present. All other families are welcome to come and hear about this exciting development too. See you in the auditorium.

LibraryMrs King and Mrs Rowney have made a few changes in the Library that will be very easy to spot! Do yourself a favour and take a look at the new spaces they have created. It’s caused a bit of a buzz with the kids.Special mention must also be made of our own resident reptile tamer, Mr Ken Stinton, who not only moved around heavy furniture, but also rescued our damsels in distress when they discovered a reptilian guest taking a bit of a winter rest in the library. The Bobtail Lizard how has a new (and more appropriate) home.Well done to all involved.

New AussieThere was someone who was quite proud of their new ‘Australian Citizen’ status seen at the College this week.Congratulations to Mrs Ackerman who became a fully fledged ‘Aussie’. Her Year 6 students were only too happy to celebrate with her.

Year 6 Transition NightYear 6 students and their parents are requested to attend a meeting on Monday 27th October at 6:30pm in the auditorium, where we will provide parents with important information regarding the transition from Year 6 to Year 7.

Many of our primary school classrooms are certified as ‘Crunch and Sip/ classrooms. The aim of ‘Crunch and Sip’ is to encourage children to have a break in the day where they sip on water and eat a serve of fruit or vegetables. Please remember to pop an extra serving of fruit or vegetables in your child’s lunch box so they can take part in the ‘Crunch and Sip’ break.

Acts of Random Kindness (ARK)A wave of niceness has taken over the Year 3/4 class, who under the direction of Miss Anderson, have been thinking of ways of blessing the school community. First action was to make personal and handwritten cards for teachers and administration staff, thanking them for their hard work. These were all individually created, with a beautiful message and prayer written for each recipient and then personally presented. Since then, little actions have been taken which have brought a smile to the face of others. From flowers and chocolates to window cleaning and more. We are sure there are more surprises heading out from this class. Let’s hope that this is a virus that takes hold of everyone at Cornerstone.Well done Miss Anderson and well done Year 3/4s.

St Joseph’s Parish FeteThe Catholic Church is having a fete on Sunday November 9th. They invite our community to join them at 10:15am at the church and school in College Avenue.
