Sister School Yesterday Ms Millis, Mr Chong and 12 students studying Indonesian set off to

visit our sister school in Lombok, Indonesia. Over the next two weeks they will be attending classes at SMAN1 Mataram and living with a host family for 8

nights. The students will have a cultural and tourist experience in neighbouring Bali for 4 nights. Some of the activities they will be doing are: snorkelling,

spending time with local orphans, a bike tour, visit coffee and coco plantations, rice fields, local villages and tour local waterfalls. This immersion will also help

to develop their language skills and cultural understandings - an important asset in our modern, global, Asia focussed future.

Staffing News

This week will be the last week for our Chaplain, Pastor Tim

Blackhall. Chappy has accepted a full time position at Christian College. We have all been appreciative of Chappy's good

humoured, supportive nature both as a member of the Wellbeing Team and, more recently, in our Hands On Learning

Program. We wish him all the best for his new appointment. We are working to finalize the details of

Chappy's replacement.

Examinations

At last week's whole school assembly I took the time to explain why we undertake examinations and why we insist on these tests being run under

formal exam conditions. This is timely with the recent NAPLAN tests and Year 9 and 10 Examinations taking place this week. We know, of course, that any

test or exam is a marker of what you understand or know at a moment in time and that they are not always a perfect reflection of what you can do.

However, exams, tests, assessments in some form almost certainly lie before

many, most or all students at some time in their future - with the most obvious being at the end of secondary schooling. They will almost certainly be a part of

gaining skills and qualifications in an enormous range of fields. We want to help our students be the best they can be, to show an employer or an examination assessor that they are a most worthy candidate for the qualification and/or job

role. To do this we need to understand the reality of the processes for success that are in place in our world and give them the experience and skills to cope

with it. That’s why we hold formal exams as we progress through the school – that’s why we want students to understand this, not as something that they

would rather not do, but as something that is contributing to effective preparation for their future.

Bruno Callori Art Mentorship At the assembly we were also pleased to welcome Caroline Rickard from Drysdale Rotary Club and

Jill Shalless the Art Mentor. They were pleased to recognise some of our students who participated

in their recent Art Show. Austria Remedio received a participation certificate while Tamika Blackwell

and Stephanie Peacock were commended and highly commended respectively for their work. The

major award and Art Mentorship recipient went to Mitchell Allen. Mitchell will now be fortunate to

participate in a fortnightly session where he explores a number of art media techniques under the

guidance of Jill along with the winners from other local schools.

2014 Debutante Ball Congratulations to all the 2014 Debs for their presentation last Friday evening. The Debs did a great job and were a

credit to themselves, their families and the College. Thank you to the College Band for their terrific performance to

introduce the evening, Ms Ebony Anderson for behind the scenes administration, the College senior students Daniel

Blair, Naheed Ali, Kayla Saunders and Alexandria Potter for overseeing the evenings 'flow' and to Ms Maggie Smith and

Mrs Vicki Swan for organizing and co-ordinating the whole event. I am sure we will have some photos in future

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT

COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY

Our school is participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on

School Students with Disability (Data Collection). This Data Collection is

taking place in Government, Catholic and Independent schools across

Australia, and will provide valuable information about supports required for a

broad group of students. This will enable Australian and State governments to

better target support and resources in schools. This in turn will help schools

give students with disability the support they need.

The Data Collection is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities. It

uses a very broad definition of disability, taken from the Disability Discrimination

Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which describe a

broad range of health and learning conditions for which schools are required

to provide ‘reasonable adjustments’ to support students to participate on the

same basis as other students.

The Data Collection will take place during Terms 2 and 3. No personal or

identifying information about any student will be included, however, if you

decide you do not wish information about your child to be included in the

Data Collection, you can opt-out by signing and returning the opt-out consent

form. More information about the Data Collection is available on the

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development website at: http://

www.education.vic.gov.au/school/parents/needs/Pages/nccd.aspx or you could contact

the Principal if you have any further questions.

WOW! WHAT A YEAR 7 FOOTY TEAM

On Thursday, 22nd May 2014, a Year 7 boys’ footy group took to the field with only 21 students (other teams had up

to 30 players – permitting at least 4 players for rotations). A third of Newcomb Secondary College’s team do not play

footy and our opponents were choc-o-bloc with weekend footy players. Our team was from at least 4 different teams

– our opponents play together each weekend. We had two half lunch practices. So we were well ‘behind the 8 ball’.

Our Year 7 students were sensational, persistent, relentless, ‘full on’, really inspiring and as Mr. K. said, “Every parent

would have been proud of their best efforts – as Mr. K. was”. Kane J. has never played footy – he had 6 kicks, too

many tackles to count and kept at the ball – WOW! Each boy did the team thing – their turn to go - they did the best

they could. You could not have asked for anything more. They were wonderful and should be very proud of their

efforts.

NSC’s first game was against the Northern Bay combine. They were a very competitive bunch until just before half

time when Kane W. kicked a goal on the siren. They were not out of it until late in the game. NSC won by 8 goals, 5

points.

Jack dominated the ruck ALL day. He was just brilliant – you understand why good ruckmen are paid so well in the

AFL. He certainly influenced all games we played – not just in the air but pack marking, ground play and kicking so long

to goal. He ran ALL day. He showed the grunt and endeavour of a great rover many times.

He was ably assisted by Jonty and Seth. They were continually pushing the ball forward as good on-ballers do. They

took on the challenge and ‘broke’ the lines, NUMEROUS times in ALL games. Seth then took on roles, forward and

back. Marking on the last, to the first line to kick goals. Jonty did another excellent run from half back to goal at the

start of the second half against Northern combine which really gave us great spirit to win the match. Jory on the

forward line did some persistent play (6 efforts in a row) to produce a remarkable goal – putting us further ahead. Jory

really tried to produce some good play and goals.

But our goal kicker of the day was Michael M., who kicked 7. He marked in packs, out in space from good leads and

snaps in the pocket. Some of his marks and goals received whoops of astonishment from the crowd – they were really

entertaining, some mercurial. ‘Stevie J’ has a rival. Jonah was not quite as prolific a goal kicker but he certainly was

effective in the play. He, like Seth, was moved between key positions on the field, from Full Back to Full Forward.

Jonah took some ‘clunking’ marks in packs (especially some ‘saving’ marks at FB) and was instrumental in us getting

momentum during games. Like Jonty and Seth he is a smooth mover when on ball, like Geelong’s James Kelly.

Another on-baller/half forward was Curtis. I yelled out Curtis’ name so many times as he was constantly in the play

and kicking goals. Curtis picked up many kicks and of course tackled to the point of having ‘limpy arms’ at the end of

the day, after having tackled so much. Nick did similar and was always chasing the ball either forward or back. During

the second half Daniel took a strong contested mark and kicked a goal from Michael from the pocket. Daniel’s goal

really sealed our fate as winners. David then finished the match with a goal – a great result for a person who does not

play footy. Jayden mainly played half forward. He goaled and made such creative play it led to others. He took some

strong marks and was involved in some great contested play. Jayden also broke the lines with his running ability.

Before our Grovedale match the Northern coach said that although Grovedale were really, really good, especially

their forwards who ‘snatch goals’ – our running ability was much better. Which is how our Grovedale game played

out. Mark had been running, marking, play making monster in the first game but became nearly impregnable against

Grovedale (especially in the first half). Mark had done this against Northern as well. Mark was a phenomenal force

across the backline and centre in all three games. He played like Andrew Mackie – smart, intelligent, play making - as a

sweeping half back. He would look up and direct it to our team, like Jack, Seth, Jonah, Jayden, Jonty, Michael and Curtis

all tried to do as well. Mark was such a good player – in the end, overall the coaches voted him our BEST for the day.

Well done Mark. According to Mark Thompson – a good backline will lead to success. Shaun, Mitch, Matthew and

Nathan all helped in its success. They doggedly pursued the ball and kept at it all game. Shaun was a stalwart in

defence, he saved us many times—marks, smothers, tackles and kicks out of defence. In the end we lost to Grovedale

by 3 points with less than 15 seconds to go. We may have won, if not for a denied goal less than a minute before.

We played Belmont High last and by then we had a team – who would play for each other. However having lost to

‘Grovey’, some ‘dropped their heads’ thus we did not play as a team. But the usual players continued to play really well

Seth, Mark, Jack, Michael but to the fore – obviously a an aerobic player – Matt M. He had been playing midfield all day

but he took his game to a much higher level at the end of the day. He was close to being our best against Belmont.

Logan and Liam were on and off the field all day and tried their hardest – as non weekend footy players – they played

their role. They tried like the rest of the team doing what was needed and should be proud of their efforts – as should

all of the team.

Thanks to the coaches, especially Mr. Andrew McCurry - who made many smart moves as did the line coaches – Alex,

Tristan , Lockie (who also goal umpired), Brock, Luke and Tom. Big THANKS to the team.
