October 2014 NEWSLETTER 22nd Edition
Welcome once again to our 22nd edition of the Tournament Water Ski Australia newsletter. The
ski season has just commenced and I look forward to reporting all the latest and up to date news
over the following six months, so please enjoy reading the latest news and events in the TWSA
Newsletters!
The Future Has Arrived!
Recently everyone received an email from the TWSA with a link to a very clever fundraising site for
our Junior World Team, however this is not just about fundraising for this team alone but is in fact
how our Australian Teams may be partially funded in the future. Please take the time to look at
the site and help with a contribution and then forward the link to your friends as every dollar
raised will benefit our countries performance against the World’s best!
If the Target funds are not raised by December the Team receives nothing as all pledged donations
are returned and not processed!

A TRUE CHAMPION AND LEGEND OF OUR SPORT RETIRES!
Ryan’s Army of National’s Oscars! In an emotional speech at the Asia Oceania Presentation night on Sunday Ryan Green announced
his retirement from World and International Championships after more than 22 years of
representing our country at the highest level. Ryan has been a true ambassador to our sport and
loved by all that have had the pleasure to cross his path and will be dearly missed by our future
teams as his expertise, knowledge and friendship is a rare attribute that he has always offered to
everyone involved. Ryan does however wish to continue competing at Moomba and will still be
involved in our sport but without the pressures and expectations of competing at World level. On a
personal level I sincerely wish Ryan all the success he deserves as he now enters a new phase of his
life and I will miss the many fun times we have spent together in the boat during the countless ski
schools that we have hosted in Australia over the years and especially our time in Malaysia
running the first International Australian ski school, all great memories that I will treasure. Thank
you Ryan you are a true champion and a very close friend!
ASIAN OCEANIA
CHAMPIONSHIPS October 8
th – 12
th
The 2014 Asia Oceania Championships kicked off with the Opening Ceremony on the lawns of the
magnificent Bonney’s Lake’s with eleven countries and 110 skiers. Australia was represented by
our Open and U17 Teams dressed in their Aussie uniforms with Captain Ryan Green leading our
talented group of athletes. Our Open Team was represented by Ryan Green (Captain) Emma
Sheers, Stephanie Griffiths, Jason Miller, Jayme Gray, Nick Wrenn, Tim Martin and Katelyn Miller
and the U17 competition which was introduced for the first time at these Championships was
represented by our team of young athletes being Casey Wooderson, Jayden McGrady, Brianna
McGrady, Katelyn Miller, Nick Stevens and Lewis Dowding.
Over the 5 days of competition we were fortunate to witness some amazing skiing with many of
our athletes gaining podium positions, which was a proud moment for us all, having the
Australian National Anthem playing on the banks of Bonney’s lakes.
There were several stand outs for the event with young Australian skier Katelyn Miller taking
home GOLD for Slalom in Under 17 and GOLD Overall and then skied up in the Open Division where
she achieved GOLD Overall. This was the first time that Katelyn has skied in the Asia & Oceania
event. Australia also took home GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE in the Open Women's Slalom and
GOLD, SILVER and BRONZE in the Under 17 Women's Slalom.
In total there were 7 individual Gold Medals, 5 Silver and 7 Bronze.
The week finished with the Presentation Evening being hosted at the Burswood Water Ski facility
on the banks of the Perth river with the city as our backdrop, what an amazing venue.
O35 WORLDS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Over 35 World Championships were held in Florida from October 8th to 12th with Australia
being represented by the largest team we have ever sent to represent our country at these World
Championships. Not only have we seen record growth within our Junior ranks over the past few
years but also our O35 skiers are increasing in numbers to where we now have 15 of our countries
senior skiers on our Australian team.Legends of the sport from all over the world came together to
compete at an incredibly high level and in an atmosphere of friendship. Jason Seel (GB) jumped
65.7m, Russell Gay (USA) tricked 10570 and Andy Mapple (GB) slalomed 1@ 9.75m The idyllic
conditions during the tournament allowed all 15 Australian skiers to perform close to or better
than their personal best. In the inaugural O65 division Maggie Storey took out the silver medal in
slalom with an Australian record in the Over 70 Women’s division and Alan Dagg won bronze in
the O65 Overall. Two other Australian records were broken, Mark Louder in the O55 Men’s jump
and Sue Crisp in the O55 Women’s tricks.
Some of our amazing Aussie Team
Our Australian Team members were Brett Andrews – Team Manager, Mark Louder- Team Captain,
Peter Schouten, Andrew Beazley, Mark Bayliss, Peter Cornale, Sue Crisp, Damon Nottle, Greg Little,
Mel Collins, Nigel Sparrow, Barry Mason, Greg Keely and Gary Underwood, O65 Alan Dagg and
Maggie Storey
Australia came a very respectable 6th out of 29 Countries!

TWSA lobbies for a reduction in
AWWF membership for Officials!
After two years of lobbying, the TWSA has managed to get a reduction in the membership fees
paid for by our officials from $70 to $50. Officials are an integral part of running our tournaments
and it is hoped that the reduction in fees will encourage more people to assist in an official
capacity when hosting tournaments.

WORLD TEAMS FUNDING COMMITTEE
The TWSA recently sent out an email to all our members asking for people to nominate for our
World’s Team Funding Committee which has been formed to raise extra funds for our Australian
Teams.
Unfortunately there was very little response, from 1,000 members we had only two people
actually nominate, nevertheless a committee has been formed and we will be formulating
strategies to assist our Australian Team Skiers.

World class water park for Moree

THE TWSA CLUB SITES DIRECTOR NEIL O’TOOLE ASSISTED IN THE PLANNING STAGES OF THE PROJECT AND WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE DEVELOPMENT’S SUCCESS!
The Moree water park being constructed south of Moree is hoped to be in use by this time next year as construction is expected to start in a couple of months.
Moree Plains Shire councillor, James von Drehnen said Moree needed to reclaim its regional status as it had diminished over the years due to complacency and although a small step, the water park is an important step. He expected the facility a tournament lake and recreational lake to be a premier site not only in Australia, but possibly the world as it will be very design specific.

TWSA FREE SKI
CLINICS
The TWSA has continued with its program of offering each State the opportunity to host two, 2
day ski clinics using high profile coaches which is funded by the TWSA. This year Queensland,
Victoria and South Australia were the States to take up this opportunity which is seen as an
opportunity to increase State membership by encouraging and mentoring young juniors into
tournament skiing.
TWSA BOARD
The TWSA Board recently held it’s annual AGM with several of our Board Directors retiring from
their positions. I would sincerely like to take this opportunity to thank Belinda Derrick, Naomi
Potts, Josh Louder, Tom Calderwood and Shaun Cranfield for their tireless efforts as Board
members of Tournament Water Ski Australia. Our organization is reliant on people who are willing
to volunteer their time for the benefit of our members and tournament skiing in Australia and I
personally appreciate the support I receive from all those involved, thank you. A list of the current
Board members can be found on the TWSA website.

2015 AUSTRALIAN MASTERS BULLETIN The Bridgewater Ski Club (BWSC) has been working hard to lift the profile and status of the
Australian Masters to where it should be, as part of the Australian Water ski Calendar.
2014 was an amazing event from all the positive feedback received and the publicity from WinTV
and local print media was a credit to the enormity of the event. The organised dinner and
presentation night set our event apart from the others.
Two new sponsors are in the wings for the 2015 Australian Masters - Coolabah Turf and Bendigo
Community Telco. This will add to a great list of committed country sponsors including Danny
Clapp the Good Guys, Water Wheel Winery, Inglewood Community and District Bendigo Bank,
Bridgewater Bakery, Bridgewater on Loddon Hotel and of course, Regal Marine Malibu Boats.
Cross-promotional marketing will be at the fore to gain exposure through their existing customer
databases.
As per 2014, “prize money” will also be on offer and the “Thurlow” trophy, for the best-performed
skier of the weekend as judged by our panel will be the ultimate prize.
This year we are calling for nominations for officials. Officials will receive a tournament pack,
which will include clothing, dinner for Saturday and Sunday night’s presentation and more.
Our aim is to make this the event of the Australian Calendar, run by skiers, for skiers who want to
be involved and perform at their best. We have the venue, but do you have what it takes to help
the skiers step up?
Officials can nominate simply by sending an email to [email protected]
BWSC are dedicated to putting on a great event for the skiers, Bridgewater Township and
