NEWSLETTER 01/18
08 February 2018
Kia ora, Talofa, Kia orana,
Greetings Parents, Grandparents and Caregivers,
A warm welcome to the start of 2018, especially to the year 1 students and
other students and their families who are new to West Park School . I hope
everyone had an enjoyable break.
Many will have noticed the cordoned off area nearby Room 6 and the Junior
playground. Over the coming weeks we will see a new playground with safety
matting installed. The project has been made possible using last year’s
WestFest funds and various other donations. The old bars based playground
has been removed and is now looking for a new home. If you are interested in
the old playground, please contact me through the school office.
To start the year we are holding parent/ teacher evenings next week on
Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 February for all students. On each day ten minute
time slots are able to be booked between 3.30 pm - 5.40 pm and from 6.00 pm - 7.00
pm. The meeting will serve two main purposes.
1. The first is to provide the teacher and parent/ caregiver with the opportunity to
meet and establish lines of communication.
2. The second very important purpose is to provide you with the opportunity to tell
your child’s teacher about your child. As parents you have a unique and
valuable insight into your child that when shared with a teacher can be used to
support and enhance the way your child’s teacher works with him or her.
To book an interview with your child’s teacher/s please visit www.schoolinterviews.co.nz.
The event code is vq5hr.
You will be guided through three simple steps and, a few moments later, you will get an
email confirming your interview time(s).
If you do not have access to a computer to make your bookings, or have any problems,
please contact either Kathy or Jo in the school office and they can sort this out for you -
478 7074 or [email protected].
EDUCATION REVIEW OFFICE VISIT (ERO) During the first week of Term two we will be having an Education Review Office
review. We are looking forward to the review and its feedback to help us continue
our constant efforts towards improving systems, practices, opportunities and results
for our students and community.
SCHOOL DONATIONS For several years now there has been no change to the suggested school
donations. The 2018 donation being requested is as follows.
IF PAID IN FULL BY 29 MARCH 2018: IF PAID EACH TERM:
One child $195 One child $55 ($220 for the year)
Two children $390 Two children $110 ($440 for the year)

WEST PARK SCHOOL LIBRARY
We are delighted to be able to once again have our school library resources for students
to be able to borrow. Very soon we will begin to timetable regular class visits to the library,
which is still located in the staffroom, as part of our weekly class programmes. So that we
can begin class visits to the library, we need your help! If you are able to volunteer any
time during the day to help with returning and issuing books for classes when they go to
the library, we would really appreciate it. Please let Philippa Matla know via email
([email protected]) or in person. Thank you in advance for your invaluable
help with this.
Homework/ Home Learning Guidelines and Procedures
Homework/ Home Learning is an opportunity to build partnership between school,
home and the child. It is also a means of reinforcing learning covered at school.
These guidelines provide direction and guidance to staff and a framework for
discussions with parents about setting homework and expectations.
At West Park School we ensure:
1. Each team/class provides parents/caregivers with an outline of homework
expectations at the beginning of each term.
2. Homework is relevant to the individual pupil's needs.
3. Homework provides opportunities to develop positive habits and attitudes to learning.
Research shows that homework that engages parents in assisting their children with learning
has an enormous positive impact on student outcomes.
4. Homework activities should relate to learning that is currently being undertaken in the
class or be maintenance of work covered in recent months.
5. Homework activities and assessments don’t discriminate against pupils who may not
have access to specialised resources at home e.g. computers, broadband, etc. If a
child requires but has no online access at home the classroom teacher can arrange
additional computer time for your child 2-3 times a week before school from 8.30am.
6. Homework is clearly described through written or oral instructions so that pupils and
parents/caregivers understand exactly what is involved. Students are encouraged to
seek further advice or guidance if clarification is needed, well before homework is
due.
7. That parents/caregivers are aware that they have the right to have their child
excused from homework. That right is at all times respected. If parents/caregivers
exercise this right, their child may not make the learning gains expected when homework
is being used to practice and reinforce learning.
8. Homework is monitored regularly and evaluated by teachers. Homework tasks
include:
essential learning tasks i.e. reading, spelling words, maths and may if
appropriate also include:
completion of unfinished work.
research which is easily managed in the home situation.
gathering of resources and/or data for forthcoming units.
discussion of current events or class topic/theme.
9. There is a clear understanding between the teacher, child and parent of monitoring
procedures, which includes such details as: how homework is to be recorded; what
happens if homework isn’t done; and how it is to be followed up.
10. As a general rule, pupils are not spending more than half an hour on homework per day,
(Year 4 to Year 6). However, senior syndicate students could do up to an hour if that is how
they have chosen to organise their time. Homework time for Year 1 to Year 3 will vary
considerably but, as a rule, up to 20 minutes is the maximum students should be involved
in homework 3 to 4 times per week.
11. Parents are welcomed to contact teachers if they have any questions regarding their
child’s homework.’

SUNHATS/ SUNSCREEN
A reminder that sunhats are compulsory at West Park School during terms 1 and 4.
Children are expected to have a wide brimmed hat or a hat that provides cover
to the ears and neck. Please note that visors and caps are not acceptable forms
of sun protection. We would also like to encourage parents to consider providing
their child with SPF30+ sunscreen and long sleeve items as additional protection for
their skin.
CIVIL DEFENCE
Last year, we collected 1 can of tinned food from each child to hold in case
of a civil defense emergency. This year, we would like to donate last year’s
collection to a local food bank, and ask that each child bring in a new can
(eg. baked beans, fruit, spaghetti, etc.) to form a 2018 food supply in case of
a civil defense emergency. We ask that your child bring their can of tinned
food into school by the end of week 4 (2 March).
