N E W SPlantations underway for Omo Kuraz sugar projects

Jinka, April 11 (WIC) – Sugar cane plantations are underway on6,000 hectares of land in southern Omo zone for the six OmoKuraz Sugar Factories project in the Rift Valley area.

The government has allocated land for sugar cane plantationsin Kuraz wereda, while construction of the sugar factories iscarried out on the side. The government has earmarked 225mill ion dollars for each of the six sugar factories that wil l beconstructed by the Metal and Engineering Corp (MetEC).

“The sugar cane plantations underway on 6,000 hectares formspart of the 15(?) hectares we plan to cover annually for fiveyears,” Tilahun Deneke, head of the Omo Kuraz SugarDevelopment Project Office, told WIC.

At present, Ethiopian Waterworks Design & SupervisionEnterprise (EWDSE) and the Southern Ethiopia Design &Supervision Enterprise (SEDSE) are finalizing the study anddesign of the Omo Kuraz Sugar projects.

As part of the project,construction of a vil lagefor employees, roads andirrigation reservoir areunderway.

Various governmentinstitutions of the SNNPregion including, RoadAuthority, WaterConstruction Enterpriseand HousingDevelopment Enterpriseare taking part in theprojects.

Ti lahun said a joint committee comprising of governmentoffices at all levels and other stakeholders have been set upwith a view to making these projects inclusive and therebytackle possible challenges.

“When completed the projects wil l create a massiveemployment opportunities for local communities,” Tilahun toldWIC.

It wil l also create an opportunity for animal husbandry for thepredominantly pastoralist community from sugar by-productsas well as from irrigation agriculture, he said.

“The community wil l have a sustained economic way of l i fe,”Tilhaun told WIC.

The Omo Kuraz Sugar Factories Project forms part of the 10sugar factories the government plans to construct across thecountry by the end of the GTP period.

Under the GTP, the country plans to increase sugar productionto 2.3 mil l ion tonnes. Out of this, 1.2 mil l ion tonnes are to beexported.
