ASFASA IS UPON US ASFASA FESTIVAL 2010

The ASFASA Festival is an interdisciplinary initiative that aims at creating links between students from the Fine Arts and Arts & Science faculties while encouraging communication and the cross-pollination of ideas between departments of Concordia University. By the same token, another objective of this project is to promote undergraduate scholarship and provide opportunities for students to share their work and be recognized by their peers. After the success of last year’s festival (featuring thematic exhibits presented in the Simone de Beauvoir Institute, the Sociology and Anthropology Department and the Geography, Planning and Environment Department), FASA

Page 5: NEWS Janvier Beta

has reinvested the project. This year’s endeavour will feature three exhibitions held simultaneously from FEBRUARY 8th -19th in the Psychology, Biology, and Philosophy departments. The themes for these exhibitions are linked to the areas of study of the aforementioned departments. By hosting these exhibitions within departmental spaces (such as hallways, lounges, atriums, conference rooms etc…), FASA wishes to strategically contextualize artwork so as to render it available to wider audiences. As such, FASA is venturing away from spaces deemed “traditional art venues” so as to incorporate artwork within environments frequented by targeted publics whose interests revolve around the themes touched upon in the exhibits. The Webster Library will also be hosting some artworks in its glass display casings. The pieces presented at this venue are conceptually and aesthetically linked to ideas of text and bookwork, while also resonating with one of the themes explored by the exhibitions held in the departments.

For this project, FASA is collaborating with colleagues from ASFA and Arts & Science departmental associations so as to create an integrative and interdisciplinary whole. Notably, the Philosophy Student Association, Sophia, is organizing parallel activities to be held from FEBRUARY 8th -12th on the 7th floor of the Hall Building, as well as a lecture on aesthetics on FEBRUARY 11th at 8:30 pm at 2149 Mackay. A retrospective publication of the project is also in the works. This publication will serve as footprint of the events and will also be used to promote the works of Concordia students beyond the universities parameters. !

Art Souterrain is looking for cultural mediators for its underground visual arts festival taking place on Nuit Blanche and running a series of presentation and conferences throughout the following two weeks. In preparation for Nuit Blanche, mediators have to first research the artists they will be working with in order to familiarize themselves with their works. Throughout Nuit Blanche, mediators are required to interact with visitors in order to bridge the gap between contemporary art and the general public.

The project was first launched by Frederic Loury, the owner of Galerie SAS last year. It is a huge artistic project in which Montreal’s underground network is transformed into a cultural mecca of sorts. Last year, the works of 80 renown artists were strategically exposed throughout the underground city from Palais des congrès to the Eaton Center shopping mall. One-hundred and fifty mediators were each assigned artists in order to guide the public towards a deeper, and perhaps, more appreciative understanding of the works before them.

This is a great opportunity to meet artists and participate in an amazing interactive public art

COMMUNITY EVENTS: LA RAZA GROUP FULL CIRCLE RETROSPETIVE

February 6th to March 14th, 2010 Vernissage : Sunday, February 7th at 1 pm Francis Caprani, G. Scott MacLeod & Gerald Perdros

While art does not often make headlines, its history is defined as much by the passage of time and social/political events as is the global narrative. In fact, artists have always engaged in the unraveling of the contemporary condition.

In the late 1980s, the collective artists’ group, La Raza, officially found its voice in Mexico City during a Canadian/Mexican cultural exchange program. The three original artists, Francis Caprani, G. Scott MacLeod and Gerald Pedros, appropriated the name, which actually means “the first race”, from a slum area in Mexico City. Moved by the powerful social realism of the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, David Alfredo Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco, La Raza began their exploration into the realm of public art making – an art form that found its forum in the public sphere outside the white walls of the museum or art gallery. Its discourse was with everyday realities, a commentary on life on the street, urban experiences and the ever-changing social and political situation. With each new project, La Raza extended their social commentary transforming specific concerns and issues into analogies with a universal perspective.

The Stewart Hall Art Gallery is proud to present the exhibition, La Raza : Full Circle, which presents works from three key series - Patriarchy and the Goddess (1991), Owe Canada Owe Quebec (1992) and Urban Realities (1994). Within each set of paintings, La Razapoignantly unveils the travesties and myths that perpetuate and permeate the socio-political environment. The work is still relevant today, for its subject matter can easily be transposed to present political hot spots around the globe. Since 2003, through their art and activist out-reach initiatives La Raza continues to link with local communities, giving support to food banks, AIDS hospices, orphanages, and Amnesty International, among others. We saluteLa Raza for their commitment to the world community.

LA CENTRALE QUOI DE NEUF, JULIE? !

!Exhibition february 5 to march 7, 2010

Opening friday, february 5, 7pm

Artist Talk saturday, february 6, 3pm

“Video Night with Julie Lequin” as part of Nuit Blanche saturday, february 27, screenings at 10pm and 1am

The video titled True Stories (almost) is loosely based on recent conversations with three people closely involved with her personal life: her mother, a publisher and a collector. The result of the notes taken from these exchanges is personal and full of humor. The reenactments, all performed by the artist, are inspired by the advice given to her on how she should manage her everyday life and art career. Edited to create a coherent narrative collage, the video piece is exhibited as a split screen four-channel projection, and will be premiering at La Centrale.

Each persona in the video has a very distinct image that is constructed by wigs, accessories and costumes made specifically for each by the artist. The sketches done before their fabrication will also be presented in the gallery. They are part of an ongoing project titled Get ready for the Camera, that shows preparatory research for the costume and the script for the video.

Julie Lequin’s projects interweave personal history with fictionalized events in a manner that blurs the line between the artist as individual and an artist as a self-constructed persona. Coming from the experience of being a French-Canadian in the U.S.A., her work explores questions of language and identity through a whimsical, crafty and satirical lens.

Julie Lequin is a multidisciplinary artist that lives and works in Quebec. Her preferred mediums are performance, video, writing and drawing. She received a MFA from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, U.S.A. in 2005. Her work has been presented both in the Americas and internationally at institutions such as White Columns in New York, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum in California. Most of her work can be seen online at www.julielequin.com

The artist would like to thank Rosie O’Gorman & Frank Abruzesse from Cow House Studios and acknowledge support from The Canada Council for the Arts.

La Centrale would like to thank our artists, members and Les Brasseurs RJ. !!!!!!

ˆEVENTˆ Les petits riens (mécanique du quotidien) FRAGMENTS Chantal Dumas Artist Talk and Listening Session Thursday, February 4, 2010, at 6 pm

Chantal Dumas initiated her « petits riens » sounds during a residency and creative laboratory in the OBORO‚ sound studio, focusing on those subtle sounds, songs too soft to catch our attention, or so mundane that we no longer perceive them. By situating ambisonic at the heart of the experimentation process, the artist is developing game sequences and compositional fragments that she will share with the public.
