SPRING 2012 BURWOOD UPDATE

Burwood leads the fight against cultural bullying

Wangal Park: an inner-city bushland oasis

In late June Burwood Council launched the Different People Different Voices Project (DPDVP) after a successful pilot program within Burwood that will form part of a broader national strategy to counter intolerance and extremism in Australian society.Funded by the Federal Attorney-General’s Department and developed in consultation with the NSW Police Force Counter Terrorism and Special Tactics Command and youth leaders, DPDVP will work to address issues of identity, create a sense of belonging and eliminate cultural isolation through educational resourcing. The groundbreaking and successful pilot program for the DPDVP by Burwood Council in conjunction with other authorities provides a blueprint for working towards a more harmonious Australia. The board game and youth services maps that form the educational resources for the Project to draw attention to the variety of opportunities people have to engage with the community, ultimately improving

youth coping and response mechanisms through peer-to-peer learning methods.Piloted in five schools within the Burwood

Council area, the DPDVP board game has been played by more than 166 students with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Burwood Council has begun work on the new Wangal Park project that will transform this parkland into an inner-city bushland oasis for the community to enjoy.

Located off Cheltenham Road in Croydon, Wangal Park promises to be an impressive new multi-purpose recreational and wetland area.

Surrounded by natural bushland to attract ducks and migrating birds, the facility will in time feature a boardwalk with disability-friendly access, an observation deck and eco-educational signposting, a picnic area, children’s playground facility and a fitness/jogging circuit. The installation of solar lighting will make for a safe and environmentally-friendly venue by night.

Burwood Council’s Enfield Aquatic Centre and Burwood Library are both set for exciting changes in the coming months.Enfield Aquatic Centre will have its existing kiddie’s play pool replaced by a state-of-the-art water play park that will be an extremely safe space for our youngest pool users as it will not hold a body of water in its basin. Improvements will also be made to the BBQ, kiosk and concourse areas, complementing this fabulous upgrade that will be ready in time for summer.Burwood Library’s new site at the Burwood Council’s original Chambers on Conder Street is also set to begin its transformation in the coming months.

The new Library and Community Hub will provide a fantastic space for learning and development, sure to make it a leading landmark in the region.

WINTER 2012 BURWOOD UPDATE

Reducing our carbon footprintCouncil is having a comprehensive independent audit conducted across its property portfolio to capture energy, water, greenhouse and other performance data.

The Elsie Street administrative offices, Burwood Library and Enfield Aquatic Centre are among those being monitored by Planet Footprint, an organisation whose environmental

‘scorekeeping’ will provide Council with a valuable overview of usage and strategic advice for improving utilities efficiency.

In doing so, this information will not only be used to assist Council from a monetary perspective but, more importantly, help reduce carbon emissions and the impact on our environment.

Council looks forward to reporting back on this in the next Burwood Update.

Keeping it tidyCouncil and the local community take great pride in keeping the streets and public areas of the Burwood LGA in pleasant shape.

Each residential property is entitled to two clean-up services per year. One is a scheduled clean-up on a date set and alerted to you by Council; the other is a pre-arranged service, where a resident first calls to organise a collection. Some conditions apply to both these options.

Call 9911 9911 for more info.

Please note: It is illegal to dump waste in public areas, and to place unwanted items on footpaths and nature strips without first booking a clean-up service. Substantial penalties apply.

Reducing food wasteLove Food Hate Waste is a fantastic initiative aimed at cutting the estimated 800,000 tonnes and $1billion’s worth of food thrown away each year in Sydney.

Wasted food means wasted resources – water, energy, materials and fuel used to harvest, transport, process, package, distribute and market it.

On the Love Food Hate Waste website, you can discover how better planning, smarter shopping and storing food

effectively can see your food wastage cut significantly, and your time and money saved.

There’s also a great range of recipes posted on there to try.

Mayor meeting with residents to discuss local issues

On Sunday, 5 August from 11.00am, Burwood Council will host the 19th annual Sandakan Remembrance Service at Burwood Park. The local community is invited together to this service to recognise the immense sacrifice made by Australian soldiers in Borneo in 1945 at Sandakan. This annual Sandakan Remembrance Service in Burwood Park serves to honour the efforts of our soldiers who were made prisoners by the Japanese Imperial Army

at Sandakan and who made the infamous death marches to Ranau.Only 6 out of 2,345 Australian soldiers survived the treatment of their captors and 23 of the men who died came from our local community, here in Burwood. The relatives and friends of those who served will stand alongside children and the next generations on Sunday, 5 August, to ensure the Sandakan story is shared and remembered.

Burwood Council has provided a progress report on its Green Action Plan (GAP), detailing its environmental vision. It demonstrates how our activities in the local area can deliver a positive environmental impact. During its term, Council implemented a range of positive environmental measures including:• Energy saving initiatives at Enfield

Aquatic Centre including pool blankets, shower timers and a more energy-efficient heating system

• Installation of approximately 350 fluorescent lights to reduce energy consumption

• Promotion of government water-saving programs including rebates on water-efficient devices

• Establishment of an electronic waste (e-waste) collection day that saw 4.88 tonnes of material disposed of

• Development of a Sustainable Events Management Plan

• A Recycling Bin Inspection Program that encouraged and rewarded consistent and most improved recyclers

• Expansion of the Illegal Dumping Prevention Plan including community

education, establishment of the Dob in a Dumper Hotline and timely enforcement measures

As the local community looks to better energy efficiency and a more effective waste management system, the GAP will guide Council’s actions into the future.
