Anzac Day has gone, but there is a lot of preparation and anticipation for next year’s centenary of the Gallipoli landings. We are interested in hearing from anyone who may have a story of any family member’s experience to share in our autumn 2015 issue.

We are continuing to work hard to make the Burwood Bulletin even better for you. One of the changes you will notice is to the layout of the Community Notices – we hope that they will be easier to read. Let us know what you think; it’s your magazine, and we are always interested in your opinions.

JGR Turns 75T

HE year 2014 saw the John Gardiner Rover Crew celebrate their 75th year of being the senior section of scouting (18–26 years old) in the 1st Glen Iris

Scout Troop.JGR, as it is afectionately called by its past and present

members, has for many decades been an active group in our local community, from mentoring younger members of our Scout Group by being leaders in all four of the younger sections over time to selling Christmas trees to raise funds for camps and activities.

he John Gardiner Rover Crew has a long-standing history of service both within and outside the Scouting movement, from members’ involvement with the local Boroondara Youth Foundation to political activism, as well as other community development projects over the years.

Many members are also prominent in the extra areas that scouting has to ofer – from statewide committees that oversee the governing of Rovers to the production teams of local scout theatre events, including Melbourne Gangshow and Camberwell Showtime, both written and performed by Scouts.

Service to scouting and our greater community is only a part of JGR; currently the crew is ixing up an old Mazda 323 to compete at car-racing events held by Rover Scout Motorsports throughout the year, and many of our members are actively pursuing leadership training and development opportunities. A few are aiming to complete the highest Rover Scout award – the Baden-Powell Scout Award – before inishing their time in Rovers; this has been achieved by only six rovers from JGR in its 75 years.

For the 75th year, both past and present members of the John Gardiner Rover Crew were invited to celebrate this momentous achievement at the 60th annual dinner on the irst Friday of December. At the dinner, various JGR memorabilia from over the years were on display, including logbooks, trophies and photos from almost every decade. JGR were even lucky enough to have members who joined in 1945 attend the evening, as well as some who had not seen other members in over 25 years. he evening was a great

success and a not-so-frequent chance for friends from old times to catch up once more.

Preventing Graiti – Light coloured walls, fences, laneways and poorly maintained properties, both residential and commercial, often attract the most graiti. Keeping your property well-maintained can reduce graiti by making it less attractive to criminal acts of vandalism. Use an anti-graiti coating so that if your property is vandalised, you can clean it more easily – get details from paint shops and hardware stores. Fast-growing vines or spiky plants such as bougainvillea also act as deterrents. Sensor lighting is also a good deterrent.

THE CITY OF WHITEHORSE recently launched its L2P program with a call for volunteer driver mentors. he idea is for experienced drivers to

team with young learner drivers from disadvantaged backgrounds, thus assisting them to gain a probationary licence.

hese young people may not have access to a car and a supervisor to clock up the required 120 hours of driver training needed to obtain a probationary licence. herefore, Council is currently recruiting volunteer driver mentors from the Whitehorse community to supervise learner drivers in a supplied, fully maintained vehicle.

In addition to their time with a volunteer, learner drivers will receive up to ive driving lessons from a professional instructor to make sure they gain some driving skills before being matched with a mentor.

Being a mentor is a volunteer opportunity with a diference – you will be helping to make our roads safer by encouraging young drivers to take more care behind the wheel.

Volunteers will be required to:• work with young people from diverse backgrounds• undertake a coaching role with the young person they

are matched with• have a current, full driver’s licence and a safe driving

history, with no serious ofences• commit to the program for a minimum of six months.All volunteers will undergo a VicRoads training program

and will be required to undertake a Police Check and Working with Children Check.

L2P – Whitehorse Looks for Driver Mentors

CANTERBURY COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

has been holding an annual fundraising breakfast

for approximately the past 10 years. Each year we

have a guest speaker to talk on a current topic of interest.

Subjects have included drought in the country, the recovery

of Marysville after the ires, the work of chaplaincy in

prisons and many more. It is a great opportunity for people

to catch up over a delicious cooked breakfast/brunch

professionally catered each year by Cynthia of Gourmet

Touch. his year the guest speaker will be Sister Brigid from

the Brigidine Asylum Seeker Project, who will be talking on

asylum seekers/refugees in our community. he breakfast

From pen to print ...

MELBOURNE’S irst newspaper, “he Advertiser”, appeared on 1 January 1838. he printing

press ordered by John Pascoe Fawkner from Van Diemen’s Land had not yet arrived so to ensure he Advertiser was not beaten to the punch, Fawkner had copies of the irst nine four-page weekly editions hand written. hankfully, Burwood Bulletin’s irst volun-teers thirty years ago did not sufer such a fate; they were loaned an electric typewriter.

An intriguing character, Fawkner, born in London in 1792, was a pioneer, businessman and politician. In 1803, when just eleven, he accompanied his convict father to Van Diemen’s Land. In 1814 he was sentenced to 500 lashes and three years government labour for aiding and abetting seven convict escapees. In 1816 he opened a bakery in Hobart, but a few years relocated to Launceston following problems over using illegal weights and selling shortweight loaves.

By August 1835 he inanced a party of settlers to sail to the mainland in his ship, Enterprize. hey sailed to Port Phillip Bay and up the Yarra River to found a settlement known initially as Bearbrass due to a mishearing of the area’s Aboriginal name, Bararing, and later, Melbourne. Fawkner Park, Enterprize Park and the suburbs of Fawkner and Pascoe Vale are named after him.

ON the last Sunday in February, Ashburton held

what may be the inal festival at this time of

year.

he weather proved to be lovely, neither too hot nor

too chilly for people’s comfort whilst walking the street

surveying the stalls or browsing in the shops that were

open for the day. As usual, the carnival rides proved

popular for both the young and the young at heart.

Apart from the cake stalls and barbecues, it was good

to see our new ish shop taking part and ofering some

novelty to the usual activity. Milk Cloud participated as

well.

All in all, it was a good festival and we gave it a itting

farewell. Our next festival will be held at the end of the

year. Keep your eyes open for the announcement of the

new dates.

Good Friday Stall

On Good Friday, the daughter of Eat Fish’s

proprietors held a cake stall in aid of the Royal

Children’s Hospital Appeal. he little cupcakes were

beautiful to the eye and nice to eat. It appears that this

stall did very well. It was great to see such an efort from

youngsters. I applaud their eforts.

End of an era

At the end of February, John and Sue Maple of he

Photo Shop left their shop for the last time. After their

long service to our community, it was sad to see them

go. I do hope that their well-earned retirement is full of

joy and fabulous new experiences.

IT’S a group of people who live locally and want to “lighten their own footprint”

by changing how they consume and waste our limited resources. We also press for measures related to the stamp of this nation’s foot upon the earth, to make for less destruction.

We started in 2006 when a group of us got together in response to a plea I’d written to the local paper. I’d been to see the Al Gore movie An Inconvenient Truth and I knew that if even half of this were true, we were on a trajectory to disaster; I couldn’t ignore it. I asked if anyone out there shared my fear (I think I said terror!) and wondered if we might do something together that we found hard to do separately. Twelve people responded, and within a few hours of meeting we had agreed to set up Lighter Footprints. Most of the members of that group are still with us, and we have slowly grown and have almost 1000 supporters now.

And there is so much to do!We know the impact that rising

greenhouse gases is having on our planet’s health – driven largely by our energy-hungry way of life. So we focus on things that can reduce our use of fossil fuel (coal, oil and gas) and encourage the development and use of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro and wave).

We are all still learning about the problems we create and we discuss what can be done. It quickly becomes apparent, when you want to change your own practices, that you are caught up in systems outside your control. You want to buy Greenpower,

and it photovoltaic panels, for example, so you explore the way that renewable energy is used, and it is then that many things come to light. Government policies determine the subsidies given to the current generators of power from coal, and place hurdles for new entrants endeavouring to harness renewable sources. What seems logical to us would be to encourage these new industries – which would enable us to reduce the carbon we are pouring into our atmosphere that is heating up the globe and would not pollute as do the coal-ired power stations that are directly damaging our health. In addition, we need to grow our green technologies for jobs and export reasons.

Unsurprisingly, there is a very strong Government commitment to the powerful fossil fuel industry and we are only beginning to understand some of the ways that both state and federal governments ensure that it is harder to set up an industry base on renewable energy than to continue as is.

So we ind ourselves knocking on politicians’ doors to ask why this is so. And we begin to talk to fellow residents in our local communities, to see if they know

how the governments and the current power industry are putting a handbrake on the development of the renewable energy industry, and checking if that is what they want to see.

So what started out as a simple exercise to support one another has grown in complexity and keeps many of us thoroughly challenged. Our concern for our own – and the next generation’s – safety in this changing Australian climate is building rather than abating. We are inding that people are looking for leadership in this and want policies to drive development of renewable energy in this country.

Join us in our many activities, only one of which is pressing for government action to increase our level of renewable energy. We run general meetings on the last Wednesday of the month at the Guide Hall in Faversham Road, Canterbury, at 7 for 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there.

DENTAL prosthetist Ted Haddrick’s business has been a part of the Burwood East “landscape” for the past 40 years, providing dentures and denture

repairs for patients. However, all things have their time, and Ted is retiring in mid 2014.

As well as the Victorian Dental Prosthetists Association, Ted is a member of the Vermont South Bowls Club, the Box Hill RSL and the Vietnam Veterans Association; it is this last area of involvement that we asked him to share with us.

After doing his initial training at Puckapunyal in December 1967, Ted spent 1968 in Vietnam, stationed in Nui-Dat with the 33rd Dental Corps, attached to the 8th Field Ambulance. In addition to treating soldiers requiring dentures or denture repairs, once a week Ted and his platoon attended local villages to ofer dental services to support and help the villagers.

“When we – a driver, a doctor and/or a dentist, assisted by myself as ‘shotgun’ (guard) – went on these visits to a local school, village, marketplace or outdoor clinic, we always took our washing to the village laundry for the locals to clean our clothes (being Lazy Men as usual!). he following week we – or someone – would pick it up, stopping also to have a few drinks at the laundry.

“We would usually try particularly to attend schools, as the kids were so grateful and happy and thankful for small gifts, like packets of rice bubbles, corn lakes, toothpaste and brushes, etc.

“One day walking through a largish village I came across the local dentist. I thought I would call in and say hello. hings were pretty primitive there; the dentist was desperate for supplies – which, of course, I could not provide. But

she was still happy to see me and showed me her sterilising technique. Used instruments were laid out on a lat metal tray; metho was poured over the top and set alight with a match. Basic, but efective!!”

Once, when lying in a helicopter with Americans at night orange-red tracers started passing close by.

“I was unaware that they were bullets,” he says. “No wonder the lying staf made a panic call for the aircraft pilot to go higher – much higher!

made an emergency landing just outside my tent. His copilot was bleeding profusely. He had been shot in the forehead by a tracer bullet. He was attended to by our Australian paramedics and then lown north to a US neurosurgeon for urgent surgery. A call came through later that day that he did not survive. He only had ten days service left in Vietnam – with stripes stuck on his chopper door. He would remove one each day until it was time to leave Vietnam. I always, to this day, wonder ‘what if …’. he futility of war, eh!”

Another memory Ted has is of spending some downtime on the beach at Vung Tau, just outside the Australian Quarters. “We were sitting on the sand at the beach when a US Chinook helicopter lew very directly over our heads carrying a container the size of a large truck. Suddenly the load came loose and was jettisoned accidentally, landing in the water about 50 metres in front of us. It was deinitely a lucky escape from being pulped and squashed!”

he end of 1968 saw Ted return to Melbourne, and using a low interest War Service Home Loan he and his wife built a home in Vermont South in 1971. Which is what helped get him started in business, enabling him to construct two new clinics at 237 and 239 Burwood Highway in East Burwood and begin his denture clinic career.

A Documentary on the Outer Circle Line

RAIL and history enthusiasts Ron Killeen from Shack West and Andrew McColm from Evolving Communications Partners are both digital media

producers from privately owned media production companies. hey recently decided to collaborate to make a television documentary about the Outer Circle Line – a steam train that ran from Oakleigh to Fairield carrying goods and passenger traic in the 1890s.

Old railway bridges in East Kew over which the train used to run were the focus of attention when ilming began in December 2013. Ron and Andrew aim to release the documentary to the public by the end of July 2014.

he Outer Circle Line was built between 1888 and 1891. It ran a distance of 20 kilometres between Oakleigh and Fairield through the suburbs of present-day Chadstone, East Malvern, Ashburton, Burwood, Camberwell, Balwyn, Deepdene and East Kew, and over the Chandler Highway bridge.

When the line opened, it passed through land that was mostly paddocks, orchards and market gardens. he population was too low to support it and it was widely regarded as a white elephant.

he Outer Circle Line was completely closed in 1897. Some sections were later reopened but with mixed success, the last of these being closed in 1943. Today, the only surviving section of the original railway is the Alamein line.

he lessons that can be learned from the closure of the Outer Circle are important, and just as relevant today. “Politicians have to be accountable for how they spend public money, proper planning processes have to be followed and there has to be genuine community consultation in the planning of public infrastructure,” said Ron.

here is an enormous groundswell of community interest in public transport infrastructure at the moment, including

much discussion around whether a rail link to Doncaster should have been undertaken instead of the East West Tunnel.

he documentary has created an opportunity to preserve the history of the railway and people’s memories of the train. “We’ve found quite a few people that remember seeing the train when they were children, or played on the old track and stations after the line closed,” said Ron.

Initially, “we put a YouTube video up on the internet … and were inundated with phone calls, emails, and people writing to us saying this is fantastic and we want to see a documentary on this railway line,” said Ron. he response was so positive that Ron and Andrew decided to take a new approach. hey set up a crowd funding campaign to fund the documentary. his proved to be a successful strategy. Organisations that have assisted with the making of the documentary include: the Australian Railway Historical Society, the State Library, Melbourne University, Steam Rail Victoria and the Melbourne Tram Museum.

Several Melbourne historians and a dedicated team of media professionals have volunteered their time to the documentary. It will be available online and for sale as a DVD or Blue Ray. An oicial launch is planned and will be advertised on the website and Facebook page listed below:

FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD emerging artist Emma Hilton painted the bottom picture in this photo showing three artworks. It is titled Vampire Weekend Contra

and is executed in acrylic; Emma painted it as part of her work at Box Hill High School last year.

In fact, last year Emma won the People's Choice award at the Amaroo Neighbourhood Centre Annual Art Show for Efy (black and white acrylic), sharing the prize with another artist, Ms Mosden, who also organises the shows. Last year, of over 100 entrants, Emma was the only student; all the others were adults. he prize money was accepted from Margaret Taylor on her sister’s behalf by eleven-year-old Natasha Hilton, Emma’s younger sister. Natasha also loves art and craft and is very talented; along with several other projects, she is currently working at her home on a canvas in the Aboriginal style.

At this year’s art show there were 106 works displayed, among them another submitted by Emma, a watercolour titled Two brothers in front of Mt Kilimanjaro, which again was done at school last year. he two brothers are Emma and Natasha's father and uncle when they were in Africa as boys. -DEBORAH HILTON

My short story What Joe Black Didn't Know

CRASH! My heart skips a beat. I hold my breath. I

start to panic. Should I check it out or should I just

leave it? My curiosity kills me. Sweat pricks my

forehead as I tiptoe down the stairs. "Hello? Anybody

there ...?" I whisper. Feet shuffle nearby. The hairs rise

on the back of my neck. A hand covers my mouth and a

bag slips over my head. Darkness.

I open my eyes. Where am I? My stomach does a

backflip. I feel as sick as a dog. I feel terrified. A bright

light shines in my face. Ropes around my hands

and feet restrain me. I am sitting in a large, empty

warehouse. Suddenly a man steps out of the shadows.

He is tall, pale and thin. He wears a wide grin.

He pulls a phone out of his pocket and dials a

number. "You are not to say a word. Understood?" He

pushes a knife up against my temple. "Hello?" Mum!

I want to scream. I want to tell her how scared I am.

"Hello. My name is Joe Black. I am calling about your

daughter. I have found her."

"Oh thank God! We were so worried." She calls for

Dad. "Michael! Louisa's been found!" Tears pour out of

my eyes like a waterfall when I hear Dad's voice. The

man glares at me. His eyes are ice cold. "Thank you so

much, sir. You cannot begin to imagine how scared we

were. Where do we pick her up?" The man chuckles.

"Unfortunately, it's not that easy. You see, you can't just

expect me to return her without some kind of reward."

"Okay there will be a reward. How about 500

dollars?" Mum replies.

"I don't think that will fit the bill. For saving your

daughter I ask for 1 million dollars." Mum gasps. "If you

want your daughter to live, then I suggest you pay up,"

the man laughs. Dad sighs. "Fine. We'll pay. Please, just

don't harm her." I am shaking like a leaf. “Wait to hear

from me." The man grins. He hangs up the phone and

looks at me. What am I going to do?

"I'm going to show you where you will sleep," he

commands. He kneels down to untie my ropes. I have

a brilliant idea. Once he has untied my hands and feet,

I jump up out of my chair. He may know some things

about me, but he doesn't know that I have a black belt. I

kick the knife out of reach and punch his face as hard as

I can. Blood trickles down his nose. He throws a sloppy

punch back. Luckily, I catch it. I hit him in the groin and

sweep him off his feet. He collapses like a rock to the

ground. His face is as white as snow. I thrust my foot

into his stomach. He gasps and closes his eyes. He is out

cold. I snatch the phone, call 000, and run for my life.

Sanja sets her sightson Rome

ASHBURTON resident Sanja Stapar is not your average university student. She holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo and is preparing to compete

in the 2014 Taekwondo World Championships.Still at the early age of 20, Sanja has been training since

she was 12 with strong support from her parents.“My dad did it when he was younger, so my sister and I

tried it to see if we liked it,” she smiles. “It turned out that our school was really good and our instructor was really passionate about it; that’s what made me want to stay.”

In addition to her university studies, Sanja trains with her team four times a week to perfect her technique and ability.

After competing at the Australian Championships in December last year, Sanja was selected – along with around 50 others – to compete at the World Championships, to be held in Rome.

“I qualiied along with 22 members from my school. he World Championships are a really big event; it’s very exciting.”

he Championships will host a number of diferent events including sparring, choreographed patterns, special

techniques (jumping and breaking boards) and power (breaking a number of boards using a certain technique).

“I’ll be competing in everything except special techniques, because I can’t jump very high,” she laughs.

“But I can break two boards!”

he Taekwondo World Championships will be held in July this year.

Hie Thee to HartwellBurwood Walks . . .


OUR ifth walk starts on Toorak Road at tram stop 53 (Lithgow St – Melway 60 D6). his time we walk around Hartwell. In 2012 Volkhard Wehner wrote

a book titled Old Hartwell: he Life and Times of the Village hat Lost Its Name with a wealth of information about this area, now the “locality” of Hartwell.

Walk north along Highield Road (an old street, existing before 1872). Our irst Hartwell encounter is the Church of Christ. Now a brick building, this was once a small wooden church, built in 1925. After this, at Ruyton Street, walk northeast through Lynden Park. When you reach the irst oval, you will see our path directly across it, irst near the clubrooms, then under huge cypresses. As you walk through this lovely linear park, you pass Lynden Aged Care (1976); the imposing brick building is Nazareth House (also aged care), set up in 1929. Beyond these buildings you will cross into a natural creek bed which is supported by the Friends of Back Creek. You will also notice the change in the track itself. Which track do you prefer?

Follow Back Creek Trail to Riversdale Road, then walk west towards the city (if you wish, you can catch a tram from stop 54 to stop 49). If you choose to walk, you will see street names (on small tiles) laid into footpaths, an enormous Irish Strawberry Tree (at Moorhead Street), the attractive Highield Park (atop of the rise – a good spot for a rest, and a popular park since 1914), distant views to the south, an old tram shelter, and the imposing St Dominic’s Catholic Church, replacing a wooden building in 1937. his church is often

open for a quiet visit inside, but irst check that services are not under way. he priory next door – originally Holyrood Mansion, a private house – is also very attractive viewed from Holyrood Street. City views can be seen to the west.

At Glyndon Road turn left, then right into Allambee Avenue, stopping at a very small park that includes a public toilet. You could also buy tasty goodies at the shops! Continue west along Allambee Avenue, and at the end veer slightly left to the very obvious trail through Frog Hollow Reserve, originally called “Frog Holler” because of the frogs calling. At the next road crossing, turn right (under the railway) and look for an orange gravel path through Willison Park. When this winding path ends, walk south 100 metres until you reach Tyrone Street.

You have now reached the jewel in Hartwell’s crown, the delightful Fordham Gardens (you have probably admired them from the tram or your car). Once you have looked around, you can, if you wish, return to where you entered this park and walk east up to the railway line and Hartwell Station (which retains much of its country style – the building was Walhalla Station until it was dismantled and moved to Hartwell in 1938). here is also a park and shop/cafe nearby.

You can catch the tram back to Burwood from Fordham Gardens, or by walking south from the station to Toorak Road. he length of this walk ranges from 5 kilometres (if you take the tram in Riversdale Road) to 7 kilometres (all walking).

BENNETTSWOOD Bowling Club mourns the passing of our valuable and versatile member Ernie Catton.

Born in Brisbane in 1924, Ernie had an older brother and a younger sister. hey lost their father in a railway workplace accident, leaving a heavy load for their mother, especially with the 1930s Depression. Attending East Brisbane Technical School, Ernie aimed for a position in marketing, and after serving in the AIF as a Wireless Operator in New Guinea (and being discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant) he served 8 years with Kraft Foods in Brisbane. Ernie’s introduction to bowls was at East Brisbane Bowling Club, where he found it a new and interesting challenge. Kraft transferred him to Melbourne as National Merchandising

Manager – a position that would take him all over the world. His arrival was fortunate for Bennettswood Bowling Club. Here he was able to exercise not only his bowling skills, but also his administration gifts. He was Club President 1983–84, 2000–02, and Club Champion ive times between 1976 and 2008. He served on many committees, and was registered as a National Umpire. He shared his skills as a coach and was an exacting taskmaster. He believed in Concentration, Commitment and Motivation. His pep talks on pie nights, prior to pennant, were full of all three!

Ernie is sorely missed by the Club and by his son John and family.

Lone pine plaques unveiled

THIS year’s Anzac Commemoration Service at the Patriotic Area in Wattle Park included the unveiling of two bronze plaques by former Premier

Ted Baillieu, MLA, in his role as Chair of Victoria’s Anzac Centenary Committee. he plaques, mounted on rock plinths adjacent to Australia’s oldest Lone Pine, tell the story of the pine and the horriic battle for Lone Pine Ridge on the Gallipoli Peninsular in August 1915.

A crowd of over two hundred took part in the service and witnessed the unveiling of the plaques in perfect weather on Sunday, 27 April. Local children were involved when Mr Baillieu invited all youngsters present to join him in unveiling the plaques. In an impressive speech, Mr Baillieu stressed the importance of sharing the stories of ANZAC with younger generations, who it was hoped would in turn pass the mantle to their children.

he plaques represent a successful outcome for the Wattle Park Heritage Group, who have worked for many years on the project. he Chairman of the Heritage Group, Tom horpe, said it was most satisfying to have the plaques in place to set the story straight on the national signiicance of Australia’s oldest Lone Pine, planted in Wattle Park by members of the 24th Battalion on 7 May 1933.

“We are most appreciative of the support received from the Victorian Government’s Community War Memorials Grants Program, which has funded the plaques, and also

Parks Victoria, which has greatly assisted by sourcing and installing the rock plinths on which they have been mounted,” said Mr horpe.

he Wattle Park Heritage Group is efectively a reincarnation of the Committee for the Wattle Park Patriotic Area, established nearly twenty years ago to plan and conduct a historic dedication ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the embarkation for Egypt of the 24th Battalion on 7 May 1915.

he Heritage Group, with the integral support of the Melbourne Tramways Band, re-established the annual commemorative service in 2001. “Patronage of the event has grown steadily over the past fourteen years, as public awareness of the signiicance of this very special site has increased,” said Mr horpe. “he centenary of Anzac Day in 2015 will correspond with the centenary of the departure of the 24th Battalion and we are hoping to unveil a further plaque, along with improvements to the site, at next year’s service.”

A centuryof service

Watle Park Primary School Celebrates

WATTLE Park Primary School was established in 1914 for boys from the Burwood Boys Home and was originally named Burwood Boys Home

No. 3841. It was a two-room timber building – measuring 26 x 24 feet and costing £404 – on land purchased by the Victorian Education Department from Burwood Boys Home (now Cameron Close Retirement Village). Prior to this the boys of school age walked across paddocks to Burwood State School.

By 1942, the number of boys enrolled had risen to 70; however, on 10 September 1942, the senior building of the school was destroyed by ire, with all records lost except a school register. A marquee was erected in the school grounds as a solution, but this proved to be very cold and uncomfortable, with the sides torn and the earthen loor wet and muddy. In 1943 the marquee was abandoned and the school continued in two halls of the Home.

A new brick building (now the library) was opened in 1944 and on 11 July the school oicially became Wattle Park State School. It was not until 1951 that it was opened to local children. During the 1950s major improvements were carried out to the grounds and the school grew rapidly in size, with extra classrooms added. Until the 1960s its entrance was from Warrigal Road; however, in 1963 the Education Department acquired ive building blocks in Banksia Street, providing land for a new entrance.

he current school occupies about 3.4 hectares, with an enrolment of 380 students from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. he grounds provide abundant space for active and passive recreation in a picturesque setting. Wattle Park Primary ofers a happy and secure environment in which students are able to value and enjoy learning. he curriculum is designed to cater to individual needs and for students to grow in conidence and self-esteem as a result of:

• achieving mastery of the curriculum, particularly in

English and Mathematics;• developing intellectual, personal, social, physical and

creative abilities;• learning to work efectively as individuals and as

members of a team;• acquiring decision-making, problem-solving and

critical-thinking skills.he school has specialist programs in Art, Music, Physical

Education, LOTE (Mandarin), Library and Reading Recovery. All students in Years 3 and 4 participate in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, which involves weekly gardening and cooking sessions. Links with Swinburne and Deakin universities promote excellence in Science. Wattle Park Primary has received a “Towards Victoria as a Learning Community” award from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development to promote Science teaching within and beyond the school.

Wattle Park Primary emphasises creating and maintaining a community atmosphere. he school community is actively involved in the local community, including a reading program with residents from Cameron Close and participation in the Back Creek revegetation project.

Improved buildings and learning technology hardware and software have prepared Wattle Park Primary School for a well-resourced and bright future. Recently completed building works include a stadium comprising a full-sized basketball court, a community room and a canteen. his is utilised by both the school community and wider community groups.

A number of functions are planned to celebrate the centenary of Wattle Park Primary School in 2014, and we warmly welcome past students, parents and staf.

BURWOOD Village celebrated its fourth annual festival on Saturday May 3, with great success. hroughout the day there were more than 2000 visitors who came

to partake in the array of family-friendly activities. Despite the gloomy weather forecast, the day thankfully remained dry until the very last moment.

Hundreds of children were delighted, and it was a pleasure to see so many smiling faces. he chair-o-plane provided thrills. he ever-popular animal farm surprised a few with some cheeky chickens who roosted on the heads of a number of children. We were also joined by “Gatsby”, the mascot for Gatsby’s Chicken, who gave us the experience of “Why did the chicken cross the road?’’.

Visitors supported the local community groups who helped to make the day so much more inviting. Everyone was impressed with the cake stall held by Wattle Park

Primary School, and the Dutch pancakes deliciously made by the mums from St Benedict’s. Entertainment abounded, with a roving puppet show by ventriloquist extraordinaire Lindi Jane, and once again it seems everyone enjoyed the dulcet tones of Danny Stone’s singing ensemble.

A FREE 100% cotton prosthesis

– an alternative to silicon

Breast cancer survivors are receiving a helping hand from the knitting needles of Community Groups from all over Australia. The prostheses are light and can be easily put in the wash.UPDATE: Our dispatch team has been busy sending out kits, with a double page going into the Inspiring Craft and SPOTLIGHTS Creative Craft magazine. We have had visits to the Olivia Newton John Centre, and Waverley Private, with the surgical care team. The prostheses can be worn fairly soon after a mastectomy, or during radiotherapy. We delivered 20 prostheses to Waverley. Julie and Cheryl also went to the Bendigo District Rotary conference, where we had a display.
