Portets is the oldest vineyard in the area of the same name, in the Graves appellation area. Perched on high on a stone terrace, the « Château de Portets » was honoured with a visit by Napoleon in 1808.

Its architectural style is that of the Renaissance, and it overlooks the Garonne and its little port. The view of the river is just magnificent.

The 2nd Grand Cru Classé du Médoc since 1855, « Château Gruaud Larose » is located in the Saint-Julien appellation area, next to the village of Beychevelle and 40 km from Bordeaux.

The Michelin Guide 2015 winners were unveiled on 2 February, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the first time.

Three chefs from restaurants in Aquitaine were rewarded.

Nicolas MASSE won a second star for his performance at La Grand’Vigne restaurant in Martillac near Bordeaux, Cédric BECHADE won back one star at L’Hostellerie de Plaisance in Saint-Emilion, also in the Gironde, and Nicolas GoRoMBo won his first star at Kaiku in Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the Basque Coast.

Located above the villages of Borce and Estaut, overlooking the Sesque mountains, « L’Espiatet » is a former barn converted into a warm, comfortable guest-house, with 5 rooms, an immense living-room, a kitchen open to guests and meals on request.

You can rent it as a gîte.

You can get there via the route leading to the Somport pass. There are many circuits starting at « L’Espiatet ». Cécile Coustet, the owner, can give some sound advice.

In the outlying areas, you can also visit the

Pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostela can spend a night at the Izaxulo gîte. The gîte is in the heart of the village and has been completely renovated. It can sleep 22 in a dorm room and quadruple or double rooms including one for people with reduced mobility.

A bike garage and kitchenette are available for guests. Free WiFi. Picnic baskets, a washing machine and tumble dryer are also available.

At the « Domaine du Clos Claberot », in the Jurançon wine-growing area, two eco-friendly cabins nestling in 6 hectares of woods, plains

« Maison ZAZPIAN » (meaning 7 in the Basque language) dates from the 17th century, located in the historic district of Mauléon in Pays de Soule, next to the pediment and in the shadow of the château. This house used

to accommodate the families of Portuguese and Spanish shoemakers in the days when Mauléon was the centre for manufacturing « espadrilles », the town’s lifeblood.

Marie-Hélène and Jean-Marc Ferrage, the current owners, offer three non-smoking guest rooms, with comfortable facilities (bathroom and WC, air-conditioning, double glazing and Internet), a dining room, a fully-fitted kitchen available to guests and a garden.

Maison ZAZPIAN is on the GR 78 hiking trail, an alternative route on the « Way of Saint James » on the Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. It was awarded the « Rando64 » label, meaning that there are facilities for hikers. The owners know the local mountains inside out and provide a host of hiker services to help you explore the area.
