This last week has been one of chaos. The floods on
Monday ripped through the city, bringing shocking
reminders of our human vulnerability and weakness.
Thousands of people woke up to a world completely
different than that from which they fell asleep. Homes were
destroyed, cars were swept away, and at least eight people
lost their lives. All from something as mundane as weather.
Chaos and destruction comes in many guises, though.
While many of us were relatively unscathed by this week’s
flood, we’re not without our scrapes and bruises. As we
gather for our Sunday morning worship, some of us are
limping from the battles of the week. Or else we’re
exhausted from the “intolerable scramble of panting
feverishness,” as Thomas Kelly describes modern life.
And it’s often because we’re in this place of chaos,
stress, woundedness and anxiety that a particular
description of God touches us. This word is a favorite
among the psalm-writers: God is seggav, our place of
refuge. Our fortress. “God is our refuge (seggav) and
strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1). This
word invites an image of prayerful resting inside the
protective presence of God, all while still in the eye of the
storm.
It’s important that we see such prayer as holding us in
the storm. We Christians often make the mistake of trying
to use spirituality and prayer as a means of avoiding
suffering. We want God to protect us from the pain of our
circumstances. But that’s not what God promises here. He
doesn’t always protect us from the storm, but he protects us
in the midst of it. Bad weeks happen, but when we’re
anchored to God, we are secured. We won’t be
overwhelmed.
So this week, when you find yourself being knocked
around, take a moment to get your bearings. If you find
yourself craving a bit of peace and quiet, consider that the
very craving may be God inviting you to rest in him. Take
a minute to quiet yourself, breath, relax. Consider where
you are: you are resting in the midst of God himself. Your
fortress. Your place of rest. Your refuge.
