First Monday Job Corner: Drop us a line if there is a job opening you need to fill at your church (and please let us know if you want it continued in future months – we are only running ads month by month, so need to know if your church wants it continued). Please note that the Presbytery website also lists some area job hunting assistance. If you know of somebody in your congregation that needs some help looking for their next job, please share that information with them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Churches are invited to share programs, job openings, and news with other churches of the presbytery. Just email print ready information to [email protected]. Churches are asked to create and maintain a file for copies of presbytery meeting packets for a two year period. This should help with answering any questions that congregation members may ask of church staff regarding actions taken at presbytery meetings. As of this writing, packets are available at http://www.miamipresbytery.org/pmv_presby_docs.htm back through the March special meeting of 2013. MEMORIAL UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, XENIA: Letting Go and Downsizing April 23 Is it difficult to face the prospect of disposing of decades of accumulated "stuff"? Are your closets, attic basement, and garage full of items that have sentimental value to you and no one else? Do you have a friend or loved one who can't seem to face this challenge?

As part of its Third Thirty series, Memorial United Presbyterian Church, 343 W. Ankeney Mill Rd., Xenia, in association with presbytery's Third Thirty Network, invites you to be a part of a special presentation on "Letting Go and Downsizing" Sunday, April 23, at 2:00 P.M. Lori Firsdon, a professional organizer, will offer practical tips and advice. The program is free and open to everyone. Please contact the church office at 937-376-9461 if you plan to attend.

This Lent, as the topic of our midweek Soup and Study, Faith Presbyterian Church is reading a book together: Waking Up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race, by Debby Irving. A child in a tumultuous 1960’s, Irving was sheltered from racial tensions in her predominantly white Massachusetts community. As an adult becoming aware of the racial divide in our nation, she gradually came to understand different perspectives, including truths she never knew existed. Beginning Wednesday, March 8 at 6:00 pm, we will come together around the table for food, fellowship, and conversation, using the book, as well as the scriptures and traditions of our church. All are welcome. The church is located at 5555 Chambersburg Rd, Huber Heights. For more information, please contact Maggie Gillespie at [email protected].

The 7th International Conference on Aging and Spirituality: "Transition and Transcendence: Transforming Aging Through Spirituality," will be taking place June 4-7, 2017 at Concordia University Chicago in River Forest, IL.

The conference will be hosted by Concordia University Chicago (CUC) in River Forest, Illinois. Past International Conferences have attracted both those with academic interests and expertise in this discipline, as well as those with more practical experience through involvement in the aging service industry, in congregations, or as informal care partners. The Conferences include a mixture of keynote speakers, workshops and papers of interest to those coming from a faith-based approach and to those approaching spirituality from a secular viewpoint. We plan to continue the tradition of including voices from many parts of the world, voices from the domains of the academic and the aging services, voices from various faith traditions and voices representing the "spiritual, but not religious." With the theme of "Transition and Transcendence: Transforming Aging Through Spirituality," the conference will address issues how aging presents us with opportunities to navigate transitions over the life course. Additionally, we will explore how we transcend the mundane and connect with something greater than ourselves while being transformed in the process.

For general information visit: http://www.7thinternationalconference.org. To register visit: http://www.7thinternationalconference.org/the-event-site. Registration for the conference is now open. If you have additional questions or would like to exhibit or sponsor any portion of the conference, please email Kati at [email protected]

LEADERSHIP AND CHANGE An Active Workshop for Congregations on May 6 in Troy

• What is Leadership? • What is the Purpose of Change? • How are change and loss connected as issues leaders must address? • What is vision? What is it for? How is vision cultivated?

Change is constant and unrelenting, and often seems to cause institutional paralysis, especially in the church. Too often, congregations find themselves drifting aimlessly through changing culture and society and ultimately longing for the “good ol’ days” of the past.

A one-day active workshop, Saturday, May 6, 8:30 A.M.-2:30 P.M., at First Presbyterian Church, Troy, will explore an alternative to this aimless drifting, looking at ways of understanding ways of intentionally moving and working through change. The workshop is sponsored by First Presbyterian Church, Troy, and the presbytery’s Committee on Ministry.

The leader will be the Rev. Dr. Ken McFayden (left), Academic Dean, Union Presbyterian Theological Seminary and the author of Strategic Leadership for a Change. (While reading

this book is not essential for participation, it can prove helpful. There will be a limited number of copies of the book available the day of the event.) Participation in this workshop is limited only to Congregational Teams consisting of two or three members and the pastor. The only cost will be lunch (which will be around $7.00 per person).

Space is limited to around 15 to 18 congregations. Reservations are required. Deadline for Reservations is May 1, 2017 Please email your reservations to Tom Oxley, including all the names of Team Members Questions about this event? Email Hart Edmonds, Interim Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Troy. NEW LOCATION!

Afternoon Presenters and Activity Choices Kirkmont Center Spring Day of Renewal, 2017

Visual Parables: Exploring Social Justice Issues & Values

Dr. Edward McNulty has served small and large Presbyterian churches from North Dakota to Pittsburgh, Ohio, and upstate New York. He and his wife Sandra are parents of five grown children, scattered from Maine and Pennsylvania to Texas & Arizona. The couple recently moved from Northern Kentucky to their home in White Picket Fence, Bellbrook. He was a member of Miami Valley Presbytery back in the 90s when he served a Dayton church. The author of 14 books about art, film & theology, he keeps busy writing film reviews for the on-line journal Visual Parables. You can see over 1200 of his reviews at (http://www.readthespirit.com/visual-parables/). His latest book is Jesus Christ Movie Star.

Praying with Your Feet: A Guided Labyrinth Walk

Spiritual Director Katie Young will lead a reflection and walk of the Kirkmont stone labyrinth, discussing two different ways to use a labyrinth as a tool for prayer. The first, a meditation on redemption, relates labyrinth walking to traditional worship service. The second, a meditation on incarnation, emphasizes the use of the body in prayer within the natural environment. (If weather conditions prevent us from walking the labyrinth, an indoor program will be presented using walking meditation and breath prayer.) Katie is a graduate of the Shalem Institute's Spiritual Guidance Program, and a ruling elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Xenia, where she has created an outdoor labyrinth.

Birding and the Spiritual Life

Terry Biers is a member of Westminster Presbyterian PCUSA in Dayton, OH. She is a retired educator, having taught junior high English and college level educational psychology and developmental English. She holds a B.A. in Education and English from SUNY Geneseo, an Ed.M. from the University of Rochester, and is a Certified Associate Christian Educator. Terry is an Elder and soon-to-be Deacon as well as a Stephen Minister. After retirement, she served as a Resource Center Consultant and Newsletter Editor for what is now the Presbytery of the Miami Valley and wrote curriculum for the PCUSA. Married for 46 years, she lives in Kettering and has six adult children and eleven grandchildren. As time allows, Terry enjoys being a fan of the great outdoors, in particular birding and baseball.

Other afternoon choices include touring the campus, hiking, volunteer tasks or simply reading, coloring or other activities on your own. This is YOUR day at Kirkmont.

Ohio Humanities Presents Ohio Chautauqua: The Natural World 2017 Tour

An exciting mixture of education and entertainment, Ohio Chautauqua will travel to four historic communities

across the state this summer. The 2017 tour begins in the village of Burton (June 6-10). Burton was founded in

1798 and is Geauga County's oldest settlement. Like many other early settlements in the Connecticut

Western Reserve, Burton has a town square patterned after the village greens of New England. Historic

homes and civic buildings surround the square. The village is home to Century Village Museum, an authentic

representation of a Western Reserve Village from 1798 to the end of the 19th century.

Follow the program to the village of Clifton (June 13-17), which straddles the county line between Clark and

Greene Counties. Clifton was a hub for early Ohio industry and travel. The natural geography of the area

provided ideal conditions for the establishment of a variety of mills. Clifton was the site of a woolen mill that

furnished material for the American army during the War of 1812; Davis Mill, established 1802 and in

operation today as Clifton Mill, produced meal and flour for Civil War troops. A major stop on the stagecoach

trail, The Accommodation Line, which ran from Springfield to Cincinnati from 1827 to 1840, the village

bustled with the commotion of travelers.

Ohio Chautauqua is a community tradition in Warren, the third site for the tour (June 20-24). Warren first

welcomed Ohio Chautauqua in 2004, and has hosted the event regularly since then in its beautiful downtown

park, which is adjacent to its historic town square. The county seat of Trumbull County, Warren was founded

in 1798 as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. Many examples of late 19th- and early 20th-century

architectural styles still stand in downtown Warren, including the Trumbull County Courthouse and the

Trumbull County Carnegie Law Library, in addition to office buildings, banks, stores, and homes surrounding

the Courthouse Square area.

The tour concludes in Milan (June 27-July 1). Part of the Firelands region of the Connecticut Western Reserve,

Milan village was platted by in 1817 on the site of a previously abandoned a Moravian Indian mission village.

The birthplace of the famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison, Milan boasts a history rich in progress and

creativity. The New England-style village near Lake Erie has a bustling town square, historical museums, and

distinctive architecture. The village sits on the county line between Erie and Huron Counties.

Ohio Chautauqua 2017: The Natural World Presented by Ohio Humanities with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Ohio

Chautauqua 2017: The Natural World features living history performances of five historic figures whose life

work helps frame the stories of Ohioans and their relationship to the natural world:

Chief Cornstalk (Shawnee: Hokoleskwa) (ca. 1720 – November 10, 1777) was a prominent leader of

the Shawnee nation just prior to the American Revolution. Dan Cutler’s portrayal of Cornstalk reveals how

Native American practices regarding the natural world changed in the face of European colonization.

Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851) was an English novelist, short story

writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein:

or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). Susan Marie Frontczak’s presentation will illuminate Shelley’s

relationship with the natural world, which for her variously represented healing, romance, adventure,

inspiration, adventure, terror, and solace.

Marie Skłodowska Curie (7 November 1867 – 4 July 1934) was a Polish and naturalized-

French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. Susan Marie Frontczak

brings Madame Curie to life to share how this tenacious and brilliant scientist strove to understand the

invisible force of nature we call radioactivity.

Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858 – January 6, 1919), often referred to as Teddy or TR, was an

American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President

of the United States, from 1901 to 1909. John Charles Chalberg’s Teddy Roosevelt introduces us to this

“force of nature” who personified the real debate on wilderness preservation and making use of the

resources of that same wilderness.

Dian Fossey (January 16, 1932 – c. December 26, 1985) was an American zoologist, primatologist,

and anthropologist who undertook an extensive study of mountain gorilla groups in Rwanda over a period

of 18 years. Dianne Moran’s dramatic depiction of Fossey uncovers a life of passion and trust that

furthered scientific understanding—and blurred the lines—of how humans fit into the world of primates

in the wild.
