Frequently Asked Questions for our 2019 Stewardship Campaign

What is the $136,000 number? Isn’t our budget much bigger than that? The General Operating Budget for 2018 was $818,592. The Appeal Goal of $136,000 is the total requested by Augsburg’s ministry teams to expand various ministries. The strategy for this campaign is to focus on the new dollars we need to fund the Appeal Goal, in addition to the General Operating Budget. I’m looking at the Statement of Intent Card— What happened to the building fund? We accidently left “Building Fund” off of the card! The boxes on the Intent Card are to record your planned giving for the General Operating Fund that covers the majority of Augsburg’s expenses. If you would like to continue (or begin) to designate a portion of your gift to the Building Fund, please write it in on the card. The building fund is savings earmarked for major repairs or maintenance to the building that are not covered in the General Operating Fund. Recent expenses paid for from this fund include repairs to the bell tower, repairs to the front steps, and replacing the electrical control panel light switches in the sanctuary. If we are so focused on new and expanding ministries, how do we address necessary increases to our already existing ministry needs? Existing ministry needs should be covered. The idea is that if everyone simply gave next year what they are giving this year, we would fully fund the existing ministries. In reality, there will be some adjustments to the costs to fund existing ministries that will have to be balanced. Our hope is that with everyone who is able and willing to make a modest increase in their giving, doing so, we will be able to fund the Appeal Goal in addition to the current ministry expenses. Can I designate my gifts to a specific ministry like the Overflow Homeless Shelter? The Body of Christ at Augsburg works best when the whole body works together. From our Stewardship perspective, this certainly extends to giving as well. When we first share with the general operating fund (our regular offerings), we are able to best ensure that all the needs of the church are met. When we started the Overflow Homeless Shelter, we needed dollars for an initiative that had not been anticipated or funded. People gave specific gifts to get it going. Now in its sixth year, we anticipate that the Overflow Homeless Shelter will be funded from the General Fund this year, so giving to the general fund is the best way to support the Shelter. Ministry opportunities like this will continue to pop up and we are confident that the congregation will meet the challenge. As you consider giving to specific ministries, please consider those as additions to your offering to the whole of God's work here at Augsburg.

Page 3: New Speaker Series oming in October!..."Keeping Love Alive as Memories Fade: The Love Languages and the Alzheimer's Journey." Wednesday, October 24 with Dr. Ed Shaw. 5:45—6:20 p.m

Why is there so much of an emphasis on turning in a Statement of Intent card? We are grateful for every dollar that you give. Many give faithfully, but choose not to formally pledge. Having a Statement of Intent Card makes it possible for the congregation to more confidently plan spending by having a more accurate estimate of expected income. Finance Team’s budgeting process is also much more efficient if there is a Statement of Intent in hand from each of us. Why is there such an emphasis on weekly giving? (I give monthly, quarterly, etc.) When ever we are asked to give more, our first reaction may be to think that we can’t possibly give more than we currently give. By thinking about our giving as weekly giving, even when we may plan to give on a monthly or quarterly basis, helps us see that a reasonable, weekly increase is manageable no matter how we may ultimately choose to give it. What if I can’t move up from my current giving level at this time? We only ever ask that you give what you can. From year to year, we can find ourselves facing a financial challenge, or a financial windfall. Our hope is that with everyone in the congregation giving what they feel that they can afford to give, that together we’ll be able to fund the Appeal Goal. What if we don’t get the full amount that has been asked for in thebrochure? If our giving intent doesn’t cover the the Appeal Goal, we will attempt to fund as much of the initiatives as we can with the funds that are pledged. Some initiatives might get a portion of the dollars they are requesting, while other initiatives might be postponed. When the budget is presented, the status of the Appeal Goal ministries will be clearly shown. If you have any other questions, please contact David Grossnickle or Kent Reichert or Pastor Wollner.
