Dear Families, The month of May has been another busy month at Lakeview. A special thank you to all who volunteered at the Vaisakhi Lunch. We are very proud of the way our students performed on the track and in the stands at the district track meet. Great sportsmanship was shown by all. Our students also did very well in the Gauss and Abel Mathematics test that was written this month. May was also Camp month as Lakeview students visited two different camps. Great experiences had by all. We conducted our Earthquake drill and school wide release. Most experts agree that the Big one is coming, just when, no one knows. As we at school take steps to prepare our staff and students to deal with an Earthquake, it is important to be pre- pared in your home as well. Earthquakes are a common occurrence, rumbling below the earth’s surface thou- sands of times every day. But major earth- quakes are less com- mon. Here are some things to do to prepare for an earthquake and what to do once the ground starts shaking. Safety Tips Have an earth- quake readiness plan. Consult a profes- sional to learn how to make your home stur- dier, such as bolting bookcases to wall studs, installing strong latches on cupboards, and strapping the wa- ter tank to wall studs. Locate a place in each room of the house that you can go to in case of an earth- quake. It should be a spot where nothing is likely to fall on you. Keep a supply of canned food, an up-to- date first aid kit, 12 litres of water per per- son, dust masks and goggles, and a work- ing battery-operated radio and flashlights. Know how to turn off your gas and water mains. If Shaking Begins: Drop down; take cover under a desk or table and hold on. Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you’re sure it’s safe to exit. Stay away from bookcases or furniture that can fall on you. Stay away from win- dows. In a high-rise building, expect the fire alarms and sprinklers to go off during a quake. If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground. If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in your car until the shak- ing stops. • Battle of the Books

In April, our Grade 6/7 students have been participating in Battle of the Books, a Burnaby reading pro-gram aimed at improving compre-hension and appreciation of differ-ent types of fiction.

Students were put into teams, and have been reading, creating ques-tions and “book battling” for several weeks. Each team received points for correct answers. Our final school battle decided a winning team that recently competed against other schools at the South Zone Finals at Edmonds on Mon-day, May 2. Congratulations to Team Gryffindor who placed 4th in a very competitive field!

    Scholastic Book Fair Update

Our 3-day Book Fair was a great success. Our net sales this year was just over $3000!

Special thanks to the parent volun-teers, students volunteers and school community for your contin-ued support of this event.

Billets Required For 2016 Little League Canadian Championship Tournament Hastings Community Little League is hosting the 2016 Little League Canadian Champion-ship tournament at Hastings Park this summer from August 4 to 13, 2016. As tournament host, the League will arrange billeting for some of the visiting players from across Canada. This is done to provide good quality accommodations for the players and to reduce tournament ex-penses for the families of the teams. Players must be billeted in pairs and each requires a separate bed. We are reaching out to anyone that might be interested in billeting tournament players. If you are interested, or know someone who may be interested, please contact Kevin Clegg [email protected]

passions and ideas PLUS they will enjoy familiar summer camp activities like games and

field trips to local cultural venues and media outlets

At the end of the week, Radio Kids campers will create their own live radio program on CJSF, playing music that

they choose and broadcasting the stories that they have created during the week. The camp will run from Aug. 8-12
