WilDeRneSS aReaDstc: 8 miles o trails available in two canyons, including theDry Pond Trail. Both canyon trails access the Mt. Rose Wilderness.
Two new trails and trailheads were constructed at Whites and
Thomas Creek Canyons. The new Dry Pond Trail connects the two
canyons and provides outstanding views o Reno, Washoe Valley
and Mt. Rose. Hikers lock to Thomas Creek where they ind a
rolling stream slicing through a scenic, aspen-illed canyon. The
autumn colors are magniicent. In the spring, the meadow is

southwestern side o Ely. The southernmost Quinn Canyon Range
gives way to the Grant Range, where Troy Peak dominates the
landscape. The Quinn Canyon Range also houses one o the states
largest populations o bighorn sheep. Farther north is the Currant
Mountain Wilderness, which tops out at the 11,513 Currant
Mountain. The Troy Peak Trail oers superb views o the entire
area. Hikers must ollow primitive trails or chart their own routes
in this challenging, remote country.

The pinnacle o the Alta Toquima Wilderness is the South Summit,
the tallest o the three peaks o Mt. Jeerson and the tallest
point in central Nevada. The rugged, isolated terrain oers canyons
ormed by glaciers, alpine mesas and a variety o vegetation, rom
grasslands and pines to sagebrush and pion. The Pine Creek Trail
provides a direct route to South Summit.

north o Tonopah. At the heart o the wilderness area is Table
Mountain, a 10-mile-long plateau with an average elevation
o 10,000. Aside rom the scenic mesas o the Monitor Range,
this wilderness area is marked by abundant water, which eeds
the scenic stands o aspen and timber pine in the hillsides
and canyons.

the 1930s, is above the timberline and stretches across crests with
views more than 100 miles into the distance o Nevadas classic
basin-and-range country. The northern trailhead at Kingston Trail
is at 7,500 and the South Twin River Trail at the southern end is
at 6,100. To hike the entire stretch requires at least two or three
nights o camping. Hikers will ind several trails near both the
northern and southern ends o the Toiyabe Crest Trail including the
5-mile Stewart Creek Trail, the 8-mile North Twin River Trail andthe 5-mile Cow Canyon Trail.

RuBy CReST naTional ReCReaTion TRail/RuBy mounTainS WilDeRneSSor Dstc: Over 200 miles o designated trailsConsidered by many to be the preeminent Nevada trail, the Ruby
Crest gives hikers, backpackers and equestrians some o the best
wilderness experiences in the state. The trail winds through the
Ruby Mountains near Elko or a 38-mile stretch, revealing glacial
lakes and a series o rugged peaks and valleys. Experts recommend
a backpacking trip o our to seven days to discover such
high-elevation gems as 10,893-oot Wines Peak.

Wilderness is comprised o 113,000 acres and has 100 miles o
hiking trails. The Jarbidge Wilderness was Nevadas irst designatedwilderness area with numerous rugged peaks, eight o which
tower above 10,000. Several trails can be ound in the Jarbidge
Wilderness. One o the most popular cross-country routes is to
Matterhorn Peak, a diicult 12-mile loop that oers spectacular
views o neighboring points rom 10,839 Matterhorn Peak. No trail
exists or the last mile.

Range south o Wells where hikers will ind high alpine lakes and
rugged, snowcapped peaks. Angel Lake is the scenic jewel near

BounDaRy peak WilDeRneSSDstc: 7.8 miles round tripJust a mile rom the Nevada-Caliornia border, this beautiul trek
can take you to the summit o Boundary Peak. With an elevation
o 13,141 it is the highest peak in Nevada. Hikers are rewarded
with views o ancient bristlecone pines and a panoramic picture o
the surrounding valleys and peaks. Note that the trail to the top
does not have much water and is unpopulated, so carry plenty o
supplies and let others know your schedule (allow 8 to 12 hours
or the trip). The wind is strong and the wind-chill actor high atthe summit.

rom State Route 264, turn west onto the dirt road in Fish Lake
Valley that is 5.8 miles south o the junction o State Routes 264
and 773. Stay on the main road or 7.1 miles to an intersection
where a sign points straight ahead to Middle Canyon and to the
right to Trail Canyon. Turn right and ollow the main road into
Trail Canyon. Road ends at Boundary Peak trailhead.

Carved into the side o a steep granite spire overlooking LakeTahoe, the Flume Trail begins at Spooner Lake State Park. The irst
section is a 1,100 climb that tops out at Marlette Lake at 8,157
and ollows the same path where wooden square-box lumes once
delivered water to Virginia City in the late 1800s. Keep a sharp eye
on the trail on one side are boulders the size o Volkswagens and
on the other side is a 1,600 bumpy drop to Sand Harbor.

a modiied version o the Yosemite Decimal System (YDS). The
original YDS categorized hiking as class 1 or 2, scrambling as
class 3 or 4, technical ree climbing as class 5 and aid climbing as
class 6. Since most rock climbing can be designated as technical
ree climbing, these routes were subdivided into the alternate ith
class scale. Expert routes are once again subdivided into + and - or
a, b, c and d. Note: Many routes shouldnt be attempted without
the presence o aids.

RiveR RoCkyDS: 5.5 - 5.13+Grd: IIILike many o the climbing areas around Reno, Sparks, Carson City
and Gardnerville, River Rock isnt a major grade IV-VI climbing
destination but is antastic or hal-day excursions and day
hikes. A granite ormation halway between Truckee and Reno
with moderate climbs, River Rock is good or winter climbs when
conditions in Tahoe arent as avorable.
Gttg Tr: Take I-80 west rom Reno. River Rock is locatedabout 2.5 miles east o the Farad exit. Approach rom the pullout/
parking area takes around 20 minutes. From the gate, walk
downhill and cross the railroad tracks. Then walk downstream
parallel to the railroad tracks and cross the suspension bridge.
Once across the bridge, stay to the let o the levee until you can
cross the channel and hike to the rock.

challenging. Due to the northern exposure, Dinosaur
is sunny in the mornings, shady in the aternoons,and otentimes too cold to climb in the winter.

The eaST ShoRe CRaGSyDS: 5.8 - 5.12+Grd: III, IVThe East Shore Crags, like most o the developed crags around
Tahoe, are mostly granite, but andesite, rhyolite, and tu rock
are also prevalent. This side o the lake is oten reerred to as the
Banana Belt due to its sunny, eastern exposure. The East Shore
Crags include multi-ace rocks like Trippy Rock, Spooner Crag and
Shakespeare Rock.

on State Route 431, Spooner Crag is along State Route 28 and

Parties should be capable o sel-rescue. Chiseling, chipping,
gluing, breaking away rock or otherwise altering rock is prohibited.
This includes placing bolts or other ixed protection. Clean-aid,
top-roping or traditional lead climbing are permitted. Some
climbing is available at Windy Peak, which sits about 2 miles west
o the parks boundaries. All routes in the Wheeler Peak area areobjectively hazardous with deadly rockall at all times o the year.
Among the accessible places are The Diamond and the Wheeler
Peak area. The Diamond is a 90 crag o bedded quartzite rising
rom the top o a talus slope on the south bank o Lehman Creek
between Upper and Lower Lehman Creek campgrounds. In the
Wheeler Peak area, climbers can explore Solomons Arrow, the
prominent needle rising on the northwest side o the Wheeler
Peak Cirque. Shenandoah Wall is a 5.8 with uniormly solid rock.
Nameless Tower is between Je Davis Peak and Wheeler Peak and
oers three routes.

near areas that have petroglyphs.
Gttg Tr: Located near Caliente, 149 miles northeast oLas Vegas. To reach Mecca rom Las Vegas take I-15 to U.S. 93
north. Stay on U.S. 93 toward Pahroc Summit Pass and turn let
(north) on an obvious dirt road approximately 17 miles past
Ash Springs. Continue north and cross the cattle guard and go
2.2 miles past an old corral; at 2.6 miles angle right at the small
dirt road. There is a pyramid-shaped boulder near the pass o a
plateau where you can park.

brings you to Emerald Lake, which oers Brook Trout.

Reservoir then proceed on to Jarbidge. Trailers not advised or
the last two miles into Jarbidge. Trailhead begins at Pine Creek

Elko to Wells then take Hwy. 93 north into Idaho. Head east at

mounTainS naTional ReCReaTion TRailMost o the trails in the Spring Mountains are open to horseback
riders, although the U.S. Forest Service stresses that the trails
are diicult. Good day rides include the lower section o the
Bristlecone Trail in Lee Canyon as well as the Fletcher Canyon Trail
in Kyle Canyon. Horseback riders can reach Charleston Peak via
the South Loop Trail (also known as the Spring Mountains NationalRecreation Trail) or North Loop Trail and Trail Canyon Trail. Horses
should be in good condition and prepared or high altitude.
All trails in both Lee Canyon and Kyle Canyon are considered
challenging, many o them steep, narrow, covered with shale and
lacking water. The areas below 6,500 in elevation oer numerous
orest service roads and trails winding through pion juniper and
other high-desert terrain. Riders should note that the roads and
trails are also used by o-highway vehicles. Camping
with horses is allowed, but weed-ree hay is required.

U.S. 50 rom Austin to Ely or I-80 rom Winnemucca to Wells,

boundless trails.
GReaT BaSin naTional paRk/BakeRCross-country skiers will ind plenty o snowy terrain
in Great Basin National Park. One o the best places
or a good cross-country tour is the 4-mile Pole
Canyon Trail. Skiers in the park should watch or
changing weather conditions and avalanche danger.

Just north o Paradise Valley, State Route 290 becomes a dirt road
that leads to 7,867-oot Hinkey Summit. At the end o the road
is the accessible 9,732-oot Granite Peak. On the U.S. 95 side,
downhill skiers can hike the 9,701-oot Santa Rosa Peak.
