a h, Portland. The City of Roses. Stumptown. Rip City. Beervana.

There’s so much to do, so much to see, so much to eat and so much to drink. And you have just 36 hours to do it!

You know all about Voodoo Doughnut, the food carts and Powell’s; The Emerald has you covered with an insider’s guide to the rest of the best of Portland.

Whether you’re a lifelong Portlander or heading up for your first-ever trip, there’s plenty to do to keep you occupied.

So breathe in the omnipresent scent of coffee, grab a house-made microbrew and — if you’re looking for a depressing night — take in a Blazer game.

Just remember, Portland is weird — let’s try to keep it that way.

Southeast Visit one of the many thrift shops like Vintage Pink or Red Light Clothing Exchange for some fun shopping, or hit up The Hawthorne Theatre for a cheap concert. On the first Friday of the month, stop by Belmont Bodega — the convenience store is converted into a nightclub and drinks are sold directly out of the fridge.

Chinatown Good Dim Sum has moved into suburbia, leaving the restaurants not much to offer besides gnats in the Kikkoman. However, search and you’ll find the irrelevant-to-east-Asian-culture store, Compound. It’s a style-conscious urban guy’s dream — snapbacks, kicks and stuff Pharrell would own.

North Stop by Mississippi Avenue for boutique shopping and quirky restaurants — think a Mac and Cheesery and something named Gravy. Head over to Mississippi Studios if you like indie music in intimate venues.

Pearl While the slumdog hipster may reside on the Eastside, this is where its smarter, more glamorous twin belongs. Stay at Ace Hotel, work at Wieden+Kennedy, furnish your exposed-brick apartment with Jonathan Adler, watch that movie no one’s ever heard of at Living Room Theaters and end your weekend at ’80s Video Dance Attack at the Crystal Ballroom. Pretentiously do yoga in a floor-to-ceiling glass studio, then treat yourself at a restaurant that only offers four menu items.

Northeast People-watch at Last Thursday, a street fair that takes place on the last Thursday of each month, and get comfort food at Pine State Biscuits or at one of the many restaurants on Alberta with cute outdoor seating.

Southwest/Downtown Ah, the epicenter of corporate life and the epitome of mainstream. Check out the food cart block, shop at upscale stores and go to The Escape, a gay club. For you pho enthusiasts, there’s Luc Lac, which has subtly chic decor and attractive hipster waiters.

You’ve finally committed to seeing Eugene’s bigger, weirder brother to the north. Let me lay

down the reason it's so famous for its food, microbreweries and strangeness: It rains about 70

percent of the year — so most of the time this city is enjoyed from indoors. b y k y l e s c h n e i d e r

Let’s assume that you were feeling extra adventurous and decided to get into the city early. I would recommend an out-of-this-world breakfast at the Industrial Cafe and Saloon. There isn’t a wrong choice on the menu — unless you hate food.

start here

You probably stuffed your gullet at Industrial and you probably would like to earn a few calorie spaces back. From the restaurant, you are close to what I believe is the most beautiful bridge in Portland, crossing over a heavy industrial area with a view that is arguably less than beautiful.

c Warning: Instagram will not do this wondrous city any sort of justice.

ô Things to remember in this strange, new place: Radio Cab is the most reliable cab service. Portland is very weird. Don’t hang in Chinatown after dark. Pay for the Max.

Well, that’s enough scenery for one day. It’s time for beer, beer and more outstanding beer. î I don’t have time to run down every pub and brewery that this city has to offer but I’ll send you to a few that will give you the right taste of Portland beer. Deschutes, Rogue, BridgePort and Tugboat are a few that can be found between the 405 and Burnside Bridge. These are in walking distance of each other — tolerance to good beer not accounted for — and are all worth their hour. Two things to keep in mind: This city has very few alleyways, making blocks shorter and inner-city crime impeccably low. You are only skimming the suds when it comes to what Portland brewing has to offer.

Now, time for more of that calorie burning: In the brewery bubble, you are only a short walk to the park under the Burnside Bridge. This is likely a Saturday and you can have the honor of attending the Saturday Market. If you thought Hirons had all the trinkets in the world — you are mistaken. You will be overwhelmed by what is known as the ‘artist’ market. From glass blowing, wood carving and bracelet making to elephant ears and perfectly blended spices: Every art is in store. This is your chance to grab your own Portland souvenir.

Next is dinner … and you must leave early for this one. Apizza Scholls is located down at the end of Hawthorne. You want to get there early because the line can easily be out the door. The wait is definitely worth it. Some days I starve all day — just so I have more room. This Oregon pizza joint successfully creates a unique New York-style pizza — one so good it even caught a personal visit from Anthony Bourdain.

Now, it’s time for adventure. If you see the Portland Spirit, look away and keep walking past this shady vessel. It may advertise as an adventurous dinner cruise — but trust me: You can find better on your own. I’d recommend renting or going on your own kayak tour — before or after lunch, if you really want to see the river.

c Unless you’re 21, I’m sorry, this is where you will be left behind. If dancing is what you want, your best bet will be at The Whiskey Bar or over at The Barrel Room — a lot of people our age can be found and you’ll make some new friends.

If the club isn’t your scene, you can get a taste of the real Portland locals at Bunk Bar across Morrison. I’d recommend them above most Portland bars for the food and atmosphere. The people are generally above par and the sandwiches are enough to take down any sandwich connoisseur. If you still need more Portland then maybe it’s time you tried something sweet to knock you to sleep — the original Voodoo Doughnut — which has been frequented so many Food and Travel Network productions. If you’ve never indulged in the absurd maple bacon bar, it is time to sin, my friend. The choices may be overwhelming so I recommend you get the Voodoo Dozen — a random assortment picked just for you.

I’m betting that you are in a food-beer coma — and Sunday has finally hit you. It’s OK. There will be more food and cocktails to get you up to speed. If you’re not a fan of Bloody Mary, this may convert you: The Screen Door offers the best that can be made on Earth. Trust me. It’s worth it. Plus, they boast a great breakfast.

If you didn’t plan to kayak the Willamette Falls and want to keep your feet dry, the Japanese Garden is always a safe bet for exercise and an amazing view of Portland. If you are planning to leave early, catch the sunrise here before you go. It’s particularly epic when some clouds are out and you catch the side of Mt. Hood illuminated outside of the city.

Chris Watson, a tourist from Salt Lake City, took the 90-second doughnut challenge at the famous Voodoo Doughnut in downtown Portland. Watson couldn't manage to eat the entire doughnut and lost the opportunity to get the treat for free.

c offee — the lifeblood of rise-and-grinders across the world. While Starbucks may suffice for the novice taste bud and yet-to-be-published

authors, some of us are tired of being amongst the common folk and flavored syrups. These coffee shops are guaranteed to be pretentiously artisan or, if not, they’re always good for people watching.

Rimsky-KorsakoffeeIf you like your coffee at absurd times of the night, they start serving up their drinks and desserts at 7 p.m. until midnight (and 1 a.m. on the weekends). With kitschy decor and essentially no lighting, this place is good for hipster sightings and always has live music. It’s a bit much in the sense that they make an effort to be effortless, like the fact that they went out of their way to have mismatching plates and cups. There’s even a haunted table that moves up and down, and a weird bathroom that will probably scare the crap out of you.

StumptownIt’s the next Seattle’s Best, so I’ve heard. If you care about where your beans are from or are interested in paying a lot extra to get your caffeine via a vase-looking thing, come here. And if you aren’t, just being in there boosts your cool factor. There are conveniently scattered locations, all with amazing interiors, one even borrowing a space in the Ace Hotel.

BaristaWhile Barista has three locations, the shop on Alberta also sells beer and is therefore superior. The vibe of the shop is completely different than the stereotypical industrial ceilings and integration of stainless steel or bricks. It’s dark and moody with chocolate crown molding and chandeliers — asking to be Instagrammed, no filter necessary. And, I mean, I guess their coffee is good, too.

Where to take your parents when they’re paying the billWhen it comes to dining with your parents, the least they could do is treat you to a place that doesn’t have paper napkins. Check out these nice restaurants that you’ll both love:

G Brasserie MontmartreBecause French food just tends to leave an impression. The interior stuns with checkerboard floors, mood lighting and romantic furniture. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a night with live music, or be amused by the person going around doing little magic tricks.

G El GauchoThis elegant steakhouse keeps it basic with quality chops and also a variety of seafood. If you don’t mind splurging a little, you won’t be disappointed by the results.

G Portland City Grill Located on the 30th floor of a skyscraper, they offer an amazing view of the city and a variety of entrees to choose from, including steak and sushi. There’s also a great happy-hour menu for dining on a budget.

best places to hike in eugene

s p e n c e r b U t t e

Every University of Oregon student needs to spend an afternoon at Spencer Butte to get away from the campus lifestyle every now and again. This popular two-mile hike off South Willamette Street carves into the beautiful setting of the Willamette Valley and is extremely close to venture out to during the day.

m o U n t J U n e s U m m e r t r a i l

Although the hike itself is short, the steep terrain offered at Mount June make this hike quite the workout. Off of I-5 past the town of Dexter, Mount June is the tallest peak in the area at 4,618 feet, with the view at the top showing the Three Sisters and Diamond Peak to the east.

If you can't make it to Portland this term, try these fun opportunities around Eugene.

Located at 76 W. Broadway and open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Saturday Market in Eugene provides an incredible amount of diverse entertainment. The only thing that could beat this college student paradise is a free-stuff-for-all giveaway.

r musical performances From stage performances to sidewalk performances, music can be heard at the market’s every corner. Many performers — especially the stage performers — tend to predominately play the acoustic guitar, with energetic, folksy, happy beats. However, it’s not uncommon to find someone playing the mandolin, violin/viola, African-style hand drums or even spoons.

G foodAsian, Italian, Mexican, A-MUH-rican — the food court covers all of the basics. Tofu Palace serves tenderly delicious tofu, while Bangkok Grill and Nice Rice serve noodles and teriyaki chicken, respectively.

For those who are a strictly veggie, there is a consumer-favorite lemonade sold at Family Homesteader, refreshing smoothies at Lulu’s Smoothies and numerous vegetable options at The T.R.E.E. (the true reason everybody eats).Additionally, there is the Farmer’s Market, which has every fruit and

vegetable known to humankind — and some of them look like they’ve been juiced up on steroids.

L clothing/merchandiseThere are quite a few clothing, glass, jewelry, ceramics, photography and wood-works booths. Some of the more abnormally cool items belonging to these booths are tie-dye boxers, bow ties and shirts, ballroom-like masks, small glass figurines in the shape of women, nightlights made out of tuna cans and wacky pictures that seem like they were fabricated by the artist’s choice of sploshing every can of paint he owns.

ô miscellaneousYoga, anyone? You certainly could since there are frequently yoga masters stretching in various areas. But by this point in the market adventure, feeling tired is natural. Places to relax include the fountain located at the center of the market, any grassy area under the trees or at a massage booth (though, you might have to wait behind a moderately long line of elderly people to get there).
