Are you new to Red Deer and/or your neighbourhood? We want you to know that you belong here.

The City of Red Deer’s Great Neighbourhoods Program invites you to journey through this Adventure Guide, developed with the assistance of Arts à la Carte, to experience “4 Adventures in Belonging.” The Great Neighbourhoods Program works to improve neighbourliness and the quality of life at a neighbourhood level by providing opportunities to connect and get involved in your community.

Use this fun guide to help you explore your community and become familiar with many of the great things it has to offer.

As an added challenge, we encourage you to use Green Transportation such as walking, biking and transit as you discover your community.

Moving into a new place can be exciti ng, and a litt le overwhelming...

This Adventure Guide has been designed to help you explore the

Red Deer community so that you can soon feel at home.

Inside these pages, you will fi nd four sets of adventures including arts, culture,

heritage, sports, recreati on, local services and informati on. The locati ons of these

faciliti es and acti viti es are listed at the back of the Guide.

Here is your challenge:

Whether you’re in the fi rst year of living in your new home or simply wanti ng to get

to know your community bett er, try to fi ll in the blanks under each adventure with

the informati on you fi nd.

Once you have completed TWO acti viti es under EACH adventure category, bring

your book in and show us what you discovered!

Would you like a prize for your eff orts?

Take this guide to one of these City faciliti es to get your “You Belong Here Stamp

of Approval” and your name will be entered into a draw for a prize pack: Red

Deer Public Library, Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery, Recreati on Centre, Collicutt

Centre, Culture Services Centre, and GH Dawe Centre.

Addresses, phone numbers, and web addresses are listed at the back of this guide.

Possible Activities

Visit the Culture Services Centre to ask about their classes and check out their

gallery. What did you find that was of interest?

Visit one of the galleries listed in the Red Deer Gallery Guide. Which did

you visit?

Visit a museum or heritage site. Which did you visit?

Pick up a Historic Walking Tour brochure at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery

and check out our history. Which tour did you take?

Visit Red Deer and District Archives to pick up a post card and ask for resources

about the history of Red Deer or your neighbourhood. What’s on the post card?

Pick up the season brochure for one of the many theatre or performing arts

groups in town (Central Alberta Theatre, Red Deer College Performing Arts,

Tree House Youth Theatre, Ignition Theatre, etc.) What show do you think you

might like to attend?

Find an opportunity to appreciate local musicians. (Red Deer Symphony

Orchestra, The Hub on Ross, Red Deer College Performing Arts Centre, local

pubs). Where did you go and what did you hear?

Pick up a brochure about public art at the Culture Services Centre (or view it

on-line). Find at least two or three pieces of art including our “Ghosts”

(statues of famous people and animals from our past).

Possible Activities

Attend a class or use the sport and recreation facilities at Collicutt Centre, GH

Dawe Community Centre, Recreation Centre, Michener Pool, Kinex Arena,

Kinsmen Arenas, or Red Deer Arena. Which class did you attend or which

facility did you use?

Check out what’s available at Heritage Ranch and/or Red Deer Tourism and/or

the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Where did you go? What did you find?

Pick up a trail map and go for a walk or ride in our amazing park system.

(There are lots to choose from including Gaetz Lake Sanctuary behind Kerry

Wood Nature Centre, the McKenzie Trail Recreation Area, Bower Ponds,

Heritage Ranch, and more.) Where did you go? What did you find?

Look up the locations of outdoor gyms on The City’s or the Primary Care Network's

website and find the one nearest to you. Where is the one nearest to you?

Go to the webmap on The City’s website to find an outdoor skating rink or

playground near you. Where is it?

Find a park or green space or walking trail near you. (You can do this by walking

around the neighbourhood, or you can find information on The City’s website.)

What did you find?

Take your dog for a walk in the off-leash park at Three Mile Bend or at

The Oxbows Dog Park. Did you meet other dog owners?

Possible Activities

Take a walk or a drive to find a shopping area (large or small) close to you.

Where is it?

Take a walk or a drive to find a drug store or convenience store nearby.

What’s the store?

Ask around. Find a place where people in your neighbourhood gather. This

might be an activity centre, a church, a park, or somewhere surprising!

What’s the gathering place?

Take a walk or a drive and find a restaurant or coffee shop near you.

What is it?

Discover what centres exist in your neighbourhood such as schools, extended

care facilities, places of worship, law enforcement and emergency services.

What are they?

Pick up a Transit Guide and ride your local transit to learn where the routes go.

Where’s your closest bus stop location?

Indoor shopping centres offer much more than shopping. What other activities

and/or services are found at the mall?

Look up Physicians & Surgeons in the Yellow Pages of your phone book to

find a list of medical clinics. Where is the closest walk-in clinic and what

are their hours?

Possible Activities

Go to Red Deer Public Library (Downtown or Dawe branches). Ask for their

monthly Link newsletter or take out a membership. What did you find of

interest at the Library?

Look up Volunteer Red Deer through the CiRS website to find out about

volunteering opportunities in the community. Which volunteer opportunity

might you consider this year?

Visit City Hall and get information about transit options, pet licenses, or other

city programs and services. What did you find?

Check out the online events calendars on either the Red Deer Community

Events website, through Red Deer Tourism and/or the Westerner Park events

page and find something you might like to attend in the next month. What’s the

event that you might like to attend?

Go to The City’s website for a listing of community groups (community

associations, arts and culture, music, service, sports, and other not-for-profit

agencies). Find one you might like to join. The group(s) that most interests
