You are about to explore one of the most

remarkable states in the nation one that draws

visitors from around the world to Las Vegas, while

also holding hidden gems such as Great Basin

National Park.

Nevada is a state of incomparable beauty, from

Lake Tahoe the largest alpine lake in North America

to Valley of Fire State Park, home of stunning red

sandstone formations. This is a state where roadways

lead to mining towns brimming with the history of the

American West.

Road trips are at the heart of the Nevada experience, and I encourage you to travel our highways and byways. Inside this years guide, youll fi nd itineraries to help plan your trip including two that highlight Nevadas American Indian cultural sites.

One important piece of Nevadas American Indian history can be found at the Stewart Indian School in Carson City. This former boarding school was in use from 1890 through 1980 and its stone buildings are an icon of education and life for many American Indians in the West. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and managed by the State of Nevada.

throughout the Silver State and many have been updated in

honor of Nevadas sesquicentennial celebration in 2014.

As you travel youre sure to encounter one of Nevadas 23

state parks. These parks are fi lled with opportunities to fi sh,

explore, and learn about our states history and wildlife. Make

sure to have your passport stamped. The Nevada State Parks

Passport is a unique guide to our state, outlining each park to

NEW IN NEVADAFrom attractions in Las Vegas to expansions in Reno-Tahoe to developments in rural Nevada, the Silver State continues to evolve. Heres a look at some recent projects:

LAS VEGAS

Bear Grylls Survival Academy opened an Adventure Day Course in September 2015 in Overton, about 64 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Shelter building, high rope work and a navigation challenge in Valley of Fire State Park are among the activities at the academy.

Casa de Shenandoah, the 52-acre Las Vegas estate of Wayne Newton, opened September 2015. Tours include an introductory video about Mr. Las Vegas, a museum area that includes Newtons private jet and classic car collection, an exotic animal collection and Newtons mansion.

Jennifer Lopez will begin a headlining residency Jan. 20, 2016, at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The show will feature Lopezs hits as well as a combination of ballads, Latin music, funk and more.

Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip opened a 350,000-square-foot expansion to its convention center in August 2015, and plans a second phase of expansion that transitioned existing space into a 70,000-square-foot carpeted ballroom. That project was completed in early 2016.

The Park, an eight-acre outdoor dining and entertainment district between New York-New York Hotel & Casino and Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, is set to open in 2016. The Shake Shack, Bruxie gourmet wa e restaurant and Sake Rok, a theatrical restaurant/late-night lounge, are among the businesses included in the project. The Park will open in conjunction with the Las

Vegas Arena, a 20,000-seat, $375 million indoor arena west of the Las Vegas Strip between New York-New York and Monte Carlo Resort and Casino.

Premium Outlets North, a retail destination at the intersection of Interstate 15 and Charleston Boulevard in Las Vegas, opened a 25-store expansion in mid-2015. Name brands CH Carolina Herrera, Helmut Lang and Rag & Bone are among the new retailers. In all, the center totals 685,000 square feet and 175 stores.

Speed Vegas, a new racecar driving experience on a 1.5-mile track, is set to open March 2016 on Las Vegas Boulevard South, about 11 miles south of the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Visitors will be able to get behind the wheel of exotic and muscle cars, including Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Audis, Ford Shelby Mustangs and Corvettes. North Las Vegas Premium Outlets

Spring Mountains Visitor Gateway, a 128-acre visitors center at 2525 Kyle Canyon Road inside Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (also known as Mount Charleston), opened May 2015. About a 45-minute drive north of Las Vegas, this center has an education building, two amphitheaters, grouppicnic sites and more than 40 miles of adjoining new trails.

The Moapa Band of Paiutes expanded its Travel Plaza in Moapa (o Interstate 15 and Valley of Fire Highway) to include an events center/concert venue to accommodate monthly events along with the Moapa Bands annual Fourth of July concert, which featured LeAnn Rimes and Bret Michaels in 2015.

RENO-TAHOE

Craft brewery Beer NV opened in August 2015 at 15 Foothill Road inside the South Creek shopping center in Reno. The tap house, with 60 craft beers and four wines on draft, joins a host of craft breweries and distilleries in the Reno area.

Edgewood Tahoe golf course on the south shore of Lake Tahoe in Stateline, will debut a new No. 9 hole in 2015. The realignment of the No. 9 hole and other changes to the course are part of a project to open the spectacular 154-room Lodge at Edgewood in 2017.

Heavenly Mountain Resort debuted a permanent climbing wall at its Epic Discovery center at the top of the gondola in September 2015. Also opened in September: a childrens ropes course and zip line, which will operate during the summer season. The resort also added a alpine coaster in November 2015 slated to be in operation during the 2015-16 ski season. The coaster is at the top of the gondola and allows guests on individual sleds to descend on a raised track through forest and natural rock formations. Heavenly also plans to open its mid-station zip line canopy tour in summer 2016.

The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California is set to open a Travel Plaza in early 2016 in Gardnerville, part of a larger project that will include a casino. The Travel Plaza will have a 6,000-square-foot convenience store and smoke shop and a fueling station. An 18,000-square-foot casino is scheduled to open in summer 2016. The casino project is in partnership with the Poarch Creek Indian Tribe from Alabama.

RURAL NEVADA

Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in the Amargosa Valley, about 90 miles from Las Vegas, opened a visitors center in 2015. Interactive exhibits on area wildlife, including the rare desert pupfi sh, can be found here.

The Elko Convention & Visitors Authority completed a 29,000-square-foot expansion to the Elko Conference Center in late 2015. The expansion added 19,000 square feet of meeting space; in total the Conference Center has 80,000 square feet, with 30,000 square feet of meeting space and a 913-seat theater.

Holiday Inn Express and Suites opened in September in Pahrump. The 104-room property has a pool, fi tness center and in-room Wi-Fi.

The Battle Mountain Band of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone Indians of Nevada broke ground in August 2015, on a new casino, hotel and travel plaza in Battle Mountain. The project will include a 150- to 200-room hotel, 200 to 300 gaming machines, a convenience store and two fuel islands, one for big rigs and one for smaller vehicles. The project is expected to be completed in December 2016.

NATIONAL MONUMENTS

Basin and Range National Monument, a 700,000-acre monument in Lincoln and Nye counties known for desert valleys rich with prehistory and recent history, was established in July 2015. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Basin and Range currently does not have a visitors center or facilities. Those interested in visiting should contact the BLM.

Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, about 20 miles north of the Las Vegas Strip, was established in December 2014. The 22,650-acre monument has sites that represent geological periods from 200,000 years to 3,000 years ago. Currently there is no visitors center or facilities at this National Park Service-managed monument, but those interested in visiting can fi nd information on the NPS website, nps.gov, then searching in Nevada in the Find a Park fi eld.

Day 1RED ROCK CANYON, GOODSPRINGS: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area (NCA), 17 miles (27 km) west of the Las Vegas Strip, is popular for hiking, bicycling and rock climbing. A visitors center explains the areas geologic and natural history, and a 13-mile (21-km) scenic drive o ers several trailheads. Red Rock Canyon NCA also encompasses Bonnie Springs Ranch, a family-friendly destination with horseback rides and more, and Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.

Finish the day with a trip to Goodsprings, about 48 miles (77 km) southeast of Red Rock Canyon. The towns claim to fame is the storied Pioneer Saloon where, in 1942, actor Clark Gable waited for three days to hear the fate of his wife, Carole Lombard, who had died in a nearby plane crash.

Day 2LAUGHLIN: Hotel-resorts line the Colorado River in this small gaming town 102 miles (165 km) south of Las Vegas. Lounge by the river, rent boats or Jet Skis, or explore such area sites as Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area, Black Mountains and Lake Mohave.

Day 3BOULDER CITY, HOOVER DAM, LAKE MEAD: Constructed in the 1930s to house workers building Hoover Dam, Boulder City is one of two Nevada towns where gaming is illegal. The town, 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Las Vegas, is home to the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Boulder City, and the Southern Nevada Railway, which o ers excursion rides. Hoover Dam, considered one of the countrys engineering marvels, is a short drive from downtown Boulder City. Lake Mead, created with the construction of Hoover Dam, is accessible at Boulder Beach.

Day 4VALLEY OF FIRE, LOST CITY MUSEUM: Valley of Fire State Park, 52 miles (84 km) northeast of Las Vegas, is famous for its red sandstone formations and petroglyphs (ancient rock art). Learn about the park at the visitors center, and explore area trails. Depart through the parks eastern entrance, and head up to Overton to see the Lost City Museum, which preserves artifacts from Pueblo Grande de Nevada, which was partially submerged by the creation of Lake Mead in the 1930s.

Day 5DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK: About 120 miles (193 km) west of Las Vegas, Death Valley National Park straddles Nevada and California. Get the lay of the land at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center before exploring Badwater Basin, Devils Golf Course, Artists Palette, Zabriskie Point and Dantes View. The park is open year-round, but some services may be limited in the summer months.

Downtown Las Vegas exudes retro-funk from the cool neon at the El Cortez Las Vegas longest-running hotel and casino to the old-fashioned malts, with prices to match, at the 1950s soda foundation of Ti anys Caf.

Soak up some history with a stroll through two of Las Vegas most celebrated museums, the Mob Museum and the Neon Museum. The Mob Museum is housed in the former federal courthouse where mob trials took place. The Neon Museum is an outdoor collection of vintage neon signs spanning many decades of Las Vegas casino history.

Several mid-century-modern neighborhoods have withstood the test of time and reemerged as the place to live the Vintage Vegas dream.

Paradise Palms, once home to Rat Pack stars and mob kings such as Dean Marty, Frank Lefty Rosenthal, Johnny Carson, and Debbie Reynolds, is a community of 1950s lime green and sky blue single-story homes near the Las Vegas National Golf Course, then known as the Stardust Country Club.

RETRO DIGSYou can deck out your home in midcentury dcor or fi nd that perfect piece of retro art in this funky shop along Antique Alley

southwest of downtown. Shops include Retro Vegas, Vintage Vegas Antiques, Glam Factory Vintage, Lost Vegas Antiques, and Sin City Pickers, just to name a few.

DRINK AND DINEAtomic Liquors, a 1950s bar named for the time when patrons watched atomic blasts far o in the Nevada desert from the

stores roof. The Rat Pack and Smothers Brothers were said to have ended their nights here, and Barbara Streisand even had her own seat, which has been restored and is on display.

The Golden Steer has served its famous steak dinners to droves of Golden Age celebrities, including Natalie Wood, Nat King Cole, Joe DiMaggio, Elvis Presley, and Marilyn Monroe.

The Bootlegger Italian Bistro doesnt look vintage on the outside its modernized Tuscan exterior south of McCarran International Airport belies the depth of history found inside its stone faade but history runs deep here, as evidenced by the walls covered in snapshots of celebrities who have dined on Mama Maries authentic Italian fare. Maries daughter and restaurant owner, former Nevada Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt-Bono, often takes the stage with her showbiz husband Dennis Bono to entertain patrons and share a hint of Las Vegas glamorous past.

Day 1PYRAMID LAKE: About 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Reno is a vast desert lake within the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Reservation. Pyramid Lake Scenic Byway, on the southwest side of the lake, is the only national scenic byway completely within an American Indian reservation. To the northwest is the Dunn Fish Hatchery in Sutcli e; tours are available in the spring. On the southern end of the lake is the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Visitors Center in Nixon. Viewable from the lake shore is Anaho Island, home to one of the largest colonies of American white pelicans in the United States.

Day 2 VIRGINIA CITY: Step back in time about 150 years when you enter Virginia City, 26 miles (42 km) south of Reno. Wooden sidewalks, saloons, Mark Twain artifacts and a whole lot of fun await in this town, which was featured in the 60s TV series Bonanza. A narrated trolley tour is the best way to learn the history of the town before spending the day shopping, taking old-fashioned photos and sidling up to a genu-wine saloon bar. The historical V&T Railroad o ers excursion rides from May through October.

Day 3 CARSON CITY, CARSON VALLEY: Carson City, the state capital, is 31 miles (50 km) south of Reno, making for an easy day

trip from the Biggest Little City. Tour the Capitol building; the Nevada State Museum, Carson City; and the Nevada State Railroad Museum, which runs diesel or steam trains on weekends and some holidays May through December. Those interested in the citys history may want to take the Kit Carson Walking Tour, a self-guided walk through the historic downtown district.

About 15 miles (24 km) south of Carson City are the towns of Minden and Gardnerville in the Carson Valley. These bucolic communities are marked by ranches, antique shops and Victorian homes. Check out the Corley Ranch in October for the Pumpkin Patch Harvest Festival or visit Jacobs Family Berry Farm in mid-summer to early fall for fresh produce. Learn more at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, or plan ahead to visit the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, accessible by guided tour.

Day 4 LAKE TAHOE: Described by Mark Twain as the fairest picture the whole

earth a ords, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. About 37 miles (60 km) southwest of Reno, Lake Tahoes north shore is anchored by Incline Village, which boasts two golf courses, a ski resort and a lakefront hotel. On the south shore, the town of Stateline draws crowds with its casino-resorts, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Edgewood Tahoe golf course.

In the summer, visitors enjoy beach time at Sand Harbor State Park and Zephyr Cove Resort, as well as hiking on the Tahoe Rim Trail and bicycling on the Flume Trail. In winter, Lake Tahoe becomes a skiers paradise, with Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, Diamond Peak and Heavenly ski resorts easily accessible from Reno.

Lake Tahoes two main destinations North Shore and South Shore are easily accessible from Reno and Carson City, and are thriving with activity and entertainment year-round.

NORTH SHORE 36 MILES (58 KM) VIA I-580 AND S.R. 431

The north shore is anchored by Incline Village, an upscale mountain hamlet boasting its own ski resort, Diamond Peak, two golf courses, a range of accommodations, and sunny stretches of sandy beach. Visitors staying at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe in Incline Village can rent kayaks and other water toys from the hotels private beach. The entire property beach and pier included are Wi-Fi equipped, but dont spend too much time on a laptop when you have the blue expanses of Lake Tahoe at your fi ngertips.

In the summer, the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival presents live performances every night of its six-week season. Arrive early to stroll along the beach and share a picnic dinner in the festivals sand amphitheater. Plan your day of outdoor adventure with the North Lake Tahoe Ale Trail, which links water and land trails to breweries and pubs.

SOUTH SHORE 59 MILES VIA I-580 AND US-50

The south shore of Lake Tahoe is perhaps best known for the towering casinos of Stateline and the bustling village at Heavenly Mountain Resort. This year-round village features restaurants, shops, galleries, and activities right at the base of Heavenlys ski gondola. Visitors can ride the gondola in the summer months to access seemingly endless miles of hiking trails or to simply take in the staggering view of the lake.

Zephyr Cove on the southeast shore of the lake is a hot spot for renting boats, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards, or meeting friends during a game of beach volleyball. This is also the launch point for the regal M.S. Dixie II, a southern-style paddlewheel boat that runs sightseeing excursions and evening dinner/dance cruises throughout the year. The beach-lined cove is also a favorite for family gatherings, weddings, and weekend getaways.

Harveys Tahoe casino-resort brings big-name musical artists to its outdoor amphitheater all summer long while neighboring resorts boast comedy and music acts any night of the week. Be sure to visit in July to get your celebrity fi x at the American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament held at Edgewood Tahoe. The golf resorts fi ne-dining restaurant also o ers lakeside dining with spectacular sunset views.

HIGHWAY 95 FROM RENO TO LAS VEGAS THREE DAYS

Day 2 HAWTHORNE, TONOPAH, 175 MILES (281 KM): Depart Fallon on U.S. 95 south through the Walker River Indian Reservation, and youll see Walker Lake to the east. Take a break in Hawthorne, dubbed Americas Patriotic Home, as it houses a U.S. Army ammunition depot. Check out wartime memorabilia and vintage U.S. weaponry at the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum.

Continue on U.S. 95 to Tonopah, site of a major mining strike in 1900. Learn why this town once was called The Queen of the Silver Camps at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park and explore the areas history at the Central Nevada Museum.

Day 3 GOLDFIELD, BEATTY, RHYOLITE, GOLDWELL OPEN AIR MUSEUM, BIG DUNE/AMARGOSA VALLEY, LAS VEGAS, 211 MILES (339 KM): Depart Tonopah on U.S. 95 south for Goldfi eld. Walk through the streets of this former mining boomtown to check out the old Goldfi eld High School, where the famous Nelson-Gans boxing match took place in 1906. Peek in the windows of the reportedly haunted Goldfi eld Hotel, in operation in the early 20th century. As you depart via the south end of town, to the west, youll see dozens of automobiles planted in the desert. Thats the International Car Forest of the Last Church art installation.

Continue on U.S. 95 to Beatty, a lively town on the eastern edge of Death Valley National Park. With watering holes like Happy Burro Chili and Beer, KCs Outpost and the Sourdough Saloon, its easy to fi nd a local place to eat. Take a short (4 mile, 5 km) detour to Rhyolite, one of the most-photographed ghost towns in the West. As you drive up to Rhyolite, youll see the Goldwell Open Air Museum, an amazing display of several large-scale sculptures.

Back on U.S. 95, continue south about 29 (46 km) miles to Big Dune in the Amargosa Valley. This 1.5-square-mile sand dune reaches 300 feet above the Amargosa Valley. Your desert adventure is winding down as you head from sand dune to Sin City. Las Vegas is 89 miles (142 km) away.

Day 1: VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK AND ALAMO, 150 MILES, (241 KM): Rev your engines in Las Vegas and take o for Valley of Fire State Park. Explore red sandstone formations, hike trails past ancient Indian petroglyphs and track down the sites where scenes from Star Trek: Generations and Transformers were fi lmed.

On your way to Alamo, stop at Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge, one of the few wetland habitats in southern Nevada, for bird watching and hiking. Overnight in Alamo at the luxurious A Cowboys Dream Bed & Breakfast or at Windmill Ridge, which boasts a cluster of cozy cabins.

Day 2: RACHEL, THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL HIGHWAY, TONOPAH, 160 MILES, (258 KM) Be on the lookout for UFOs as you drive the Extraterrestrial Highway (Nevada State Route 375). This remote highway

is on the northern edge of Nevada Test and Training Range, which houses the mysterious Area 51, reportedly the site of alien autopsies. Stop at the Little ALeInn you cant miss it, its among the only cluster of buildings youll see on this stretch for a snack and some souvenir shopping.

Continue to Tonopah, site of Nevadas second great mining boom in the early 20th century. Learn about this history at the Tonopah Mining Park and the Central Nevada Museum. Theres plenty of lodging options in Tonopah, including the stately Mizpah Hotel.

Day 4: RHYOLITE, PAHRUMP, 150 MILES, (241 KM)On your way out of town, take a short detour to the ghost

town of Rhyolite, a bootown in the early 1900s. As you drive up to it, youll see the Goldwell Open Air Museum, the site of several large-scale sculptures, including the much-photographed The Last Supper, by Alfred Szukalski.

Head back to Las Vegas via Pahrump, home to two of Nevadas four wineries, as well as the Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch, where you can fl y over the water via a Jetpack America experience. End your adventure where you started: Las Vegas. Youve come a long way, but the fun isnt over: youre in the Entertainment Capital of the World, after all.

Day 3: GOLDFIELD, BEATTY, DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, 94 MILES, (151 KM), plus extra exploring

Just south of Tonopah is the old mining town of Goldfi eld. Walk the town to see such storied structures as the Goldfi eld Hotel and Goldfi eld High School, where the famed Nelson-Gans boxing match of 1906 took place. Just south of town is the International Car Forest of the Last Church, an art installation of cars half-buried in the desert hills.

Continue to Beatty, your base camp as you explore nearby Death Valley National Park. Stop by the Furnace Creek Visitors Center & Museum to learn about the parks geology and natural history before checking out such sites as Zabriskie Point, Badwater Basin, Devils Golf Course and Artists Drive.

Day 1: LOVELOCK, WINNEMUCCA, ELKO 289 MILES (466 KM)Goodbye, Reno east on Interstate 80 to Lovelock. In the mid-19th century, this community served as a resting place

for pioneers traveling the Emigrant Trail out West. Here, you can lock your love in the plaza behind the Pershing County Courthouse, visit the Marzen House Museum or explore the Lovelock Cave archeological site about 20 miles south of Lovelock.
