After working 20 years in the “forever fascinating” hi-tech business world, Fran Oh decided to retire to enjoy more timewith her three children — Jake, Eunna and Inna — “who have been the biggest supporters throughout my career,” she says.Shortly after making the decision to retire, Fran began searching for a summer home where her children could start collectingmemories and hopefully return for many years to come with their own families.“I wanted to be near, but not too close to theocean. Having growing teens, I wanted to be close, but not right in the town. I wanted a yard for my dogs to run around,” shesays.“I wanted to be surrounded by as much nature as possible, without feeling isolated.” Miacomet met all of her criteria.“Iwas lucky,” she adds,“to find a house that fit my family’s needs.” The family moved into the home in June, 2009.The house hasneeded what Fran calls “an extreme makeover” from many years of neglect.“As I am working on the house, I discover that itonce was loved and well cared for. It is a very warm and inviting feeling to discover flowers, sand dollars, shells and a beautifulgarden beds that were all hidden under overgrown bushes and weeds over the years. It almost feels like discovering an ancientruin that has been lost for many years — only to be rediscovered, admired and cherished. What is your Favorite Island Meal? Nantucket Bay Scallops of course, pan seared in a buerreblanc.

What is your favorite benefit to living year-round on Nantucket? That’s a tough one, I really do love Nantucket. I would say being a mem-ber of such a close knit community is really something. I have threeyoung boys in the school system and there are so many programsoffered and the support is tremendous. Everybody just helps eachother out.

What is your favorite beach on Island? I’d have to say 40th Pole. It’s hard to go there without running into a familiar and friendly face.We’ll usually meet up with family and friends out there and just spend the whole day catching upand relaxing. It’s a great beach to play with the kids, too.

What do you do on a day off? Laundry. I know, thrilling stuff! I like to read quite a bit so I try to squeeze in 20 minutes wherever I can.

What is the most important invention or innovation that has happened during your life-time? Although I don’t have one, I think the iphone changed the course andspeed of communication and information technology.

How do you help a buyer celebrate their new purchase? It is truly a special moment entering your first home on Nantucket.Aside from some bubbly, I like to tailor a little extra somethingdepending on my clients needs.A Nantucket Decorated Mailbox ora Nantucket Basket is always a nice souvenir to have. If there is somework to be done, a gift certificate to a hardware store can be veryhandy. Either way, a home here on our lovely isle is definately worthcelebrating.

Who would you choose to be shipwrecked on a desert island with? My husband, Carl.At least we could have a chuckle about the situation.

How would you spend your ideal day? An ideal day for me would be quite simple, a good day at the beach with family and friends fol-lowed by a great meal at one of the many top restaurants. Or, a lobster meal on the beach watch-ing the sunset would be nice too.

Barbara, a native of Dublin, arrived on Nantucket Island in 1991 and originally worked as a basket weav-er and jewelry designer, both of which remain passionate hobbies. Barbara has been a realtor on theisland for 6 years and as a mother of 3 boys, she is an active member of the community and serves onseveral boards.
