M&M Reaching Out to Kids Haven

Think about this ...

Harriet Beukes

“I feel that it is every businessman’s responsibility to give something back to the community and not just wait for the next person to make a move.”

These are the words of mr. rainie mostert from m&m signs, who volunteered to give n$200 from every tenth set of number plates he produces to Kids haven Walvis bay for the rest of the year. mr. mostert opened a mobile unit for his business at the natis offices on Monday where people can now have their number plates printed.

his idea is to also make a copy machine available so that people would not have to go far to get copies made of their documents. he prints number plates at the cost

of n$200 per set and pledged to give Kids haven that amount for every ten sets he produces.

“If I print fifty sets in a day I can give N$1000 dollars to Kids haven. I feel it is not enough, but it is a start,” he said. he challenged other businesses to do something similar to help these children. m&m has been in existence for four years and are now expanding to the natis premises with their mobile unit.

Kids haven has been running for six years. Their mission is to provide abused and abandoned children within the erongo region with safe transitional housing and facilitate the possible reunification of children with their parents or legal guardians. he wants to help provide the basic needs of a child; to experience a loving environment, eat three meals a day, receive proper health care, wear clean clothes, get an education and not be abused.

Namib IndependentVoted Best in Namibia

diamond arrow award for electrical contractor suppliers

• hangana fishing was the recipient of a diamond arrow award for fishing companies

• spot on marquee and Tent hire, who walked away with their third diamond arrow award in as many years for executive caterers and a silver arrow award for catering supplies and equipment

“This prestigious award took us by complete surprise,” said an elated gareth amos (managing editor: namib Independent), who pointed out that a company cannot enter for a Pmr award, therefore making this process unbiased and credible. “as the name of the award indicated, the processes of selection is done by a professional management review in which hundreds of namibian ceo’s and directors are surveyed on a multitude of disciplines across all industries, and only if a company is continually and significantly referenced by respondents of the survey, is an award earned, “ he added.

“This month marks the namib Independent's third anniversary and whilst we have received tremendous support from the larger national and erongo based corporate sectors during this time, we still have work to do with regards to the local coastal business sector, and our goal this year is to increase our local market share. To have received this award at this stage of our business cycle is an endorsement and a reaffirmation that we are producing a world-class product in our tiny corner of the world, and we hope that this recognition will assist us in winning over the support of more local

advertisers,” amos continued. It was further mentioned that

the namib Independent and spot on were the only non-corporate winners of the national awards. recipients of a diamond arrow award are ranked first overall in their respective industry and are rated at least 4. 10 out of 5 (outstanding), gold winners are 2nd overall and rated at least 3, 75 (excellent) and the silver silver/bronze award are 2nd or 3rd and rated at least 3, 40 (very good).

“Winners of a diamond award are rated as companies that are of a significant enough standard that they could be transplanted into any international market and would be able to compete on product, service and overall strength of the business operation,” said Johan hattingh, ceo of Pmr, the south african company that conducts the nationwide business survey annually.

hattingh noted during the award ceremony that there is a dynamic team behind each successful and highly rated company. on this measure the namib Independent stands out by virtue of the fact that in 2014 the entire team consisted of four full time personnel, one part timer and a single freelancer, making this achievement truly remarkable.

“considering how small a newspaper we are, it was an honour to be in the same company as the nation’s largest and most successful businesses such as o&l, fnb, nbl, Pick and Pay and similar companies,” said amos.

sharing in this accolade, was sonya amos, co-owner of the namib Independent who was

present at the awards, who pointed out: “access to the internet helps companies to operate in small secluded markets such as the coast, but even so one is never quite sure of the quality of product and service one delivers as a result. To be selected as an excellent and outstanding organisation of international ranking by business leaders is a fantastic indicator that our humble business is on the right track, and the award is a credit to our small but dynamic team. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal customers who have supported us through thick and thin over the last three years.”

The only one other newspaper who made the grade in terms of the survey for 2014 was the national afrikaans daily die republikein, which received a gold award. In previous years the Informante has also been a winner in the category.

What some of the Walvis Bay Winners had to say:

Spot On: “We have won this award for three years running and for us this is a great acknowledgment of the professional job that we do. We do a lot of corporate functions for the big brand names and receiving a diamond Pmr award from the corporate sector speaks volumes for the quality of professional services that we deliver year on year,” said servaas van Wyk, owner of spot on.

Etosha Fishing Corporation: "We are indeed very pleased with this award. companies received awards when strategy

and people get together. If it was not for an extraordinary team of people with dedication, willingness, positive attitude this would not have been possible. If people from the outside recognize that we are a good company then the team is definitely doing the right things. We will stay humble and continue with our good doings, change every day to stay ahead in the market and keep on looking after our human capital, because without them it would not be possible," said Pieter greeff (managing director)

Manica Group: “The manica group namibia is very honoured to have received these awards. We are also humbled by the recognition that customers and the namibian public have bestowed on us through the Pmr awards. The awards serve as a constant reminder and encouragement for all companies and divisions to keep living up to our motto of being the ultimate choice in logistics solutions. as was the promise 90 years ago with the establishment of manica, so it is for today and tomorrow that we will continue to

exceed our customers’ expectations in all our logistics services and products,” said nolito marques, general manager: Pr & marketing.

Hangana Fishing: hangana managing director herman Theron says: “hangana is grateful for the recognition received by our overall 1st place Diamond Arrow award in the category fishing companies, in the 2014 PMR Awards. Recognition such as this and the sadc Quality Product of the Year 2014 Award, which Hangana won in the category Product of the Year, large enterprises, are testimony to our commitment to continuously providing our customers with exceptional quality fish products. To this end, we are proud to say that as a 100% Namibian company with a 100% Namibian workforce – we are proud to say that we comply with the best international food safety standards such as brc global standards for food safety; ISO 22000:2005; HACCP 10330, which is further testimony to the o&l groups purpose of creating a future, enhancing life”

Bookings Lined Up for the New Luxury Strand Hotel

Donna Collins

Online reservations and bookings are already lined up for the N$350-million majestic Strand Hotel at the Mole beach front, which is poised to become Namibia's premier seaside attraction and is just six months away from completion.

The olthaver & list group said in an exclusive interview this week that despite challenges they are making good progress and should be finished by their target date in August 2015. It was also confirmed that the hotel is already taking its first bookings for September.

"This will be the best hotel in the country and no hotel will beat the strand hotel from a tourism perspective, as it is situated on prime location with the best sea views around," said John simpson (o&l group gm Projects developments).

"The structure is mostly in the completion phase, with minor brick work being finished off. Ceilings, air-conditioning, tiles and other wall and floor finishes are now being fitted.

"The final touches will be done during may and June with furniture and equipment being moved in shortly after," he added. "We have to make

sure everything is perfectly in place on the opening day because this is a first class hotel, not a shopping mall that can continue with construction whilst doing business." he added.

stefanutti stocks building business unit, who were tasked with construction, are on target despite initial delays in the starting date.

"building of the strand hotel has made great strides since the first foundations were laid towards the end of 2013," Simpson said. Construction really started gaining momentum towards the second half of last year and reached the peak of progress in october with the casting of the roof slabs.

The two storey hotel which is being built on the same spot where the old strand hotel stood for many years stretches the entire length of the mole and will offer a total of 125 rooms, of which most will have spectacular sea views. There are 74 standard rooms, 40 luxury rooms, six junior suites and two luxury suites. The Presidential suite sits proudly on the top floor and boasts a full panoramic sea view.

The strand hotel is reviving the nostalgic seaside resort ambience with a contemporary style, four star, luxurious beach resort combining

the old German flair with Namibian style interior and exterior architectural designs. conference facilities will include meeting rooms, a business centre and a banqueting hall which can host weddings and birthday parties. The hotel will offer high end gift shop outlets and a host of opulent features one expects from a top class resort.

an all day a la carte menu with drinks, light meals, snacks and pastries will be available plus three other restaurants and bars with sea-facing terraces, a lobby lounge, beer garden and beach kiosk. It is expected to revive the once popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike. for hotel guests there will

also be a spa and fully equipped Atlantic Gym on the second floor.

The strand hotel will be run

by o&l leisure hotels division who plans to employ at least 350 namibians at the facility.

Relief in Sight for Domestic Workers

Donna Collins

Like countless domestic workers at the coast and across Namibia, Nama speaking Liza Dragonder (24) is in a catch 22 situation with her monthly wage. Her pay is far below the national minimum wage requirement, but she is afraid to ask for an increase in case she loses her job.

she works for a prominent house cleaning company that services the thriving holiday home market in swakopmund. She is required to start at 8h30 and finish at 17h00 - sometimes leaving the job much later. There is no lunch break for her and no provisions are made for a meal or snack for her when she is dropped off at one of the homes.

like many young namibian women she is a single parent who has to support a child. Many others find themselves as the only bread winner for extended families while earning way below the breadline. These women are often required to get to work long before the sun is up, with their duties endless, boundless and priceless. Working conditions for the housemaid often shows little regard for how much a human being can put into a day’s work - and even less regard for fair pay.

To create a positive working environment for namibia's estimated 46 000 domestic workers, the ministry of labour and social Welfare announced the historic action taken by government with the introduction of a minimum wage for domestic workers, who have been described as some of the lowest paid and least valued employees in the labour market.

Intervening last year in this long overdue matter, the ministry of Labour and Social Welfare in December gazetted an official wage order by the labour minister, doreen sioka, for action taken by the government. The minimum wage for domestic workers will come into effect on April 1, 2015.

Domestic workers will get paid N$1 218 per month which is N$281.09 per week, N$56.21 per day and N$7.02 per hour. The minimum overtime pay which includes sundays and public holidays will be N$10.53 per hour for overtime, N$14.04 for work on Sundays and N$14.04 on public holidays.

domestic workers will, in addition to the minimum wage, receive a transport allowance for travel to and from work in an amount that is equivalent to the cost of public transport for each day of work unless the employer provides transport.

If the domestic worker accompanies the employer on holiday for purposes of rendering household duties, that time must be compensated as working hours.

The employer must also provide suitable food in reasonable

quantities to meet the dietary needs of the employee who lives in their house or elsewhere.

should the worker stay at the employer's house, provision of a lockable room must be made with good ventilation, electricity, if available, and a bed with a mattress. Protective garments and a uniform must be provided to domestic workers when they start work should they have to work with dangerous equipment or toxic substances.

Statistics from a study done in 2012 revealed that there are about 46 000 domestic workers of whom 12 000 are employed on farms. Of these workers 71% are female, 67% earn less than N$1 000 per month, while 45% earn less than N$600 per month. Some 38% are sole breadwinners.

The implementation of the minimum wage for domestic workers as N$1 218 per month must be monitored and evaluated to ensure it is effective.

The wage order will be supported by the full force of the law and be enforceable in the same manner as the basic conditions of employment contained in the labour act of 2007, which already covers domestic workers.

“domestic workers contribute great value to the national economy by providing supportive services to working people. They make it possible for many people to work outside of their homes and to contribute more productively to national economic development,” deputy minister of labour and social Welfare, alpheus muheua, was quoted recently.

“This is a small but significant step in the government’s efforts to address the problem of extreme income inequality,” added muheua.

The Wages commission for domestic Workers was appointed in May 2012 by then Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Immanuel ngatjizeko, after it was endorsed by Cabinet. The five-member tripartite commission was tasked to investigate the situation of domestic workers and to make recommendations to the minister on minimum remuneration and conditions of employment for domestic workers.

other recommendations by the commission which have been adopted by the labour minister include the definition of domestic work as “work performed in or for a household and includes, but is not limited to, the work of housekeepers, cooks, nannies, drivers and gardeners”.

“The minimum wage should be based on domestic work as an industry and not based on the type of work or tasks performed,” explained muheua. furthermore, the entry age for domestic work will be 18, subject to exceptions promulgated

by the minister in the wage order or by regulation.“The provision of items such as food, clothing or any other items

may not be a substitute for wage payments. employees must receive their minimum monetary remuneration in full every month,” explained muheua.

meanwhile namIbIa domestic and allied Workers union (ndaWu) coordinator lizette hanes said in a statement they already have over 20 cases of domestic workers who lost their jobs as a result of the proposed minimum wage. she said there were domestic workers who were getting good salaries of as much as n$2 000 or even n$3 000 but now their employers have kicked them out to employ someone whom they can pay the new minimum wage.

according to her, many employers have taken advantage of the minimum wage and this has led to people losing their jobs as a result.

minister of regional and local government and housing and rural development, charles namoloh, said it is important to take into account the social status of employers when it comes to increasing the minimum wage, because employers of domestic workers are often domestic workers themselves and will therefore not be able to pay the minimum wage.

Gullian - The Haven AcademyRunning the non-profitable organisation, The Haven

academy, I do have lots of ladies. most of them are from the north, coming to look for jobs. We give them basic training in skills like cooking, cleaning and general home care. These ladies come from diverse backgrounds and possess different skills, so their salaries are different depending on where they get employment.

Some start off in a job where they work five days a week but others may only work three days a week. The total number of working hours determines their pay but the majority gets N$11 per hour. These ladies mostly live in shacks and the ones who have children are left with very little after paying for electricity, water, medical bills, clothing and food. at times what they earn isn’t enough, but they work hard to sustain themselves because they are strong women.

Tuwilika Shawana“I work as a housemaid at the fairways houses

in Walvis bay and can only work four days a week because I have to look after my two little ones. I work eleven hours in one day and get a weekly wage of N$430 which is N$1720 per month. I have to pay the shack we live in, electricity, water, my children’s school, the woman who takes care of my children three days a week, send some money to my mother in the village, clinic and medicine for the children and I am only left with n$400.00 for food. It really is not easy and the father of my children does not care.”

Beaulah Hoeses“I only get n$800 every month. I live with my

employer and only get the weekends free. I look after their three children who are between two and five years old. When I get paid, I send money to my mother who is looking after my child at the farm. I then have to buy my toiletries and clothes and pay my medical expenses.”

Eunike Bauleth“I do domestic work three days a week and get paid N$1000 every month.

I only go to clean for five hours on those three days. I pay for my room, my transportation, clothe myself and buy my own food. When I get sick, it is always a problem because I cannot work and then the money is taken off from what I get and I still have to pay for my medicine.”

Frieda Shanyengange“I work four days doing laundry for two families; two days for each family. I

iron and put away all the clothing and. my hours are not really counted as long as I finish what my boss asks me to do. In total at the end of the month it adds up to N$1400. I sometimes help to clean empty houses for different people. That gives me an extra n$300 dollars or n$500 when I am lucky. I then have to pay for my food, clinic, housing, taxi, salon for my daughter every month, day care and toys for my little daughter. If I don’t work hard my child will suffer, so I do my best to work all these jobs to try to make money even when sometimes is not easy.”

Anna Shiiweya“at the moment I do cleaning and laundry for one madam near the lagoon,

I clean one time in the weekend and she gives me n$500 every month. I am looking for a permanent cleaning job for the week but it is very difficult because there are not a lot of jobs here. I help to buy food in the house of my uncle because I do not have a lot of money and he allows me to stay there while looking for a job to pay me enough so I can afford to study and save enough to visit my mother in the north.”

Aina Joseph“I am happy; I started a job this month and I am trained by The haven

academy which helps ladies like me learn more skills such as how to cook properly, clean, sew and even how to speak better english. even if it is just a job of cleaning, washing and ironing, it is still a job and I earn N$11 per hour. I work nine hours a day, but it depends on the work I have to do. I pay for my food and day to day needs. I do not pay for transport because I get picked up and dropped off.”

Wambuseun Brings Music TV to Namibia

Harriet Beukes

“I want to make a difference. Namibia does not have a music channel on television and we struggle to get airplay. That is why I decided to create a channel to give Namibian artists a platform where they can get enough exposure and be promoted.”

That is the difference lownan nangombe, better known as Wambuseun, wants to make in namibia’s music industry.

he hopes that This TV will eventually be a 24 hour music channel, but until middle march it will only be aired for ten hours a day.

“We are trying out ten hours for now just to get used to the flow of things, since I am the only one from the whole team with broadcasting experience,” he added.

This TV will broadcast from 13h00 to 22h00 and will contain seventy percent

music and thirty percent documentaries, magazine programmes and lifestyle programmes focusing on namibians abroad. both local and international music videos will be aired.

Wambuseun has spent the past sixteen years working on his vision. his career started out with the 411 show but it did not work out and the programme came to an end. he continued working in the television industry and is now confident that This TV will be a success.

“In a few years I want it to be the number one music channel available.”

Tune in to channel 107 of NBC’s digital Terrestrial Television (dTT) platform to have a look.

Wambuseun grew up in swakopmund, but is now jetting between Windhoek and austria.

“You know how it is when you are married and a baby is on the way. a lot of travelling is necessary if your wife is from abroad.”

The organisers of the weekend’s unlawful possession/acquisition of land in Swakopmund, Engelhard /Uirab and Gothardt Kandume were both arrested and released on the same day, with the attorney general deciding about possible criminal charges.

leaders of a group of land grabbers were arrested on saturday and the shack that they illegally erected was also demolished. and according to a report the Tamariskia housing committee expressed their support for this “affirmative repositioning” of municipal land.

The group of so-called homeless and landless under the leadership of gothardt Kandume of the christian democratic Voice (cdV) took control of a piece

of land close to the drc, bordering the housing scheme of the nhe in Tamariskia.

Initially nine people occupied the area but during the morning they were joined by many others. The swakopmund mayor Juuso Kambueshe was present later in the morning, with police officers arriving on the scene as well.

Kandume and his deputy mr. engelhard /uirab were taken into custody along with two other members of the group mr. Jimmy //hoabeband mr. hans neidel. //hoabeb and neidel were released immediately after it was found that they were not involved.

Kandume and /uirab refused to give statements to the police and said they will only state their case in an open court of law. They were released later in the afternoon and were informed that the case will be considered by the attorney general.

“We have demolished the shack ourselves. now we are waiting for the national campaign of protest over municipal land which will take place from 24 to 27 February. We are the first people to be arrested over land in and independent namibia and we will not leave the matter there,” Kandume was quoted as saying.

“Kambueshe and his board must know that they are running out of time before the next local government elections are held. We will make things hot for them," he warned.

The Tamariskia housing committee led by frederik van Wyk added their support to Kandume. Van Wyk said pressure groups have been trying for more than two years to discuss the matter of affordable land for low and middle income people with the municipality.

“Kandume’s group are the true owners of this land. “developers who gain millions of dollars from housing schemes are the land grabbers and the municipality turns a blind eye to that,” van Wyk concluded.

don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Dangerous Holes in Naraville’s Pavement

Ella Kamati

A shopkeeper from Walvis Bay has reached the end of his tether with the poor condition of the pavement in front of his store. Lawrence Theron, owner of Van’s Supermarket in Narraville, said this shoddy spot is now starting to harm his business.

“my customers trip and fall regularly. Those in wheelchairs cannot get into the place at all. everyone complains to me, but my complaints to the authorities fall on deaf ears. “I have reported it to the Walvis bay municipality two years ago, but it has never been fixed,” he said.

ouma hilde muller, a frequent customer, said she fell victim to the dangerous patch recently.

“I fell flat on my face there about a month ago. “At 73 it is hard enough as it is to go out and buy some bread. I cannot afford to fall again. Please fix it,” she pleaded.

The Sweet Sound of African Vocals

Donna Collins

There is a new boy group on the block - African Vocals, with loads of talent and the sweetest acapella voices. The youths have hopped on the back of the worldwide boy band phenomenon and after leaving the SSS (Swakopmund Secondary School) Choir, they are now the latest to pop up on the Swakopmund music scene.

The namib Independent met up with them last week and enjoyed a short impromptu performance as they delivered a harmonised song in afrikaans - an original written in the streets of mondesa.

Their voices, which blend in perfect pitch to create a medley of bass, soprano, alto and tenor, need no extra frills and with the right direction, these guys can go places.

The six-member group, aged between 17 and 21, are working hard at african Vocals, which was formed only this year.

mono, Joseph, Waye, Jerome, Joel and sylvanis (group leader) are a fine example of our youth and are already mainstream participants in national choir competitions through the school. some of the lads have even travelled to austria last year with the namib Youth choir and are well on their way to putting their stamp on the local music scene.

Their aim, they say, is to get their music out there and perform at functions, whilst introducing the sweet sound of african Vocals to wider audiences. Whilst

some of the lads do play instruments such as djemba, shakers and keyboard, they like to keep it real and want to trend on the quality of their voices.

"We have been singing together in the school choir for a couple of years, where we first met, but felt it was time that we stepped up our game," We decided to form a group so that our type of music reaches the ears of the youth as well as wider audiences," said Joseph.

"of course our dream would be to record a cd, but first we want to perform live at as many functions as possible, they said.

"our music plan is to uplift well-known old and traditional folk songs in the various native languages of namibia and by singing them, reach out and take the music far and beyond," they added saying that the group comprises of damara, herero, oshiwambo as well as a bushman speaking members.

When asked what their message to the youth would be, they said; "Work hard, stick to your dreams and pursue an education.

"above all live a clean life and do something that you are going to be proud of as well as make your country proud."

With more and more boy bands exploding onto the scene these days, the trend although not a new one - is catching on. from the 'beatles' in those days, to 'one direction', these guys all have one thing in common when they hit the charts - young, talented and dynamic which 'african Vocals" sure has in abundance.

POWER OUTAGETO WALVIS BAY - SUNDAY, 22 FEBRUARY 2015

INFORMATION ON THE POWER OUTAGE AND PROGRESS ON PROJECT

This outage has mainly been reserved for NamPower to continue with preparation and construction work for the major upgrade of the infrastructure to the town.

During the next two years many planned outages could be expected to accommodate the Walvis Bay upgrade which will bring a very reliable and secure supply to the town. One should comprehend the technical complexity and the difficulty during this migration to the new infrastructure. Erongo RED is carefully planning future requirements to limit the number of outages to an absolute minimum to reduce the overall impact to all customers.

This outage will be the seocnd planned outage for 2015 that relates to the electricity upgrade for Walvis Bay.

During this outage on Sunday 22 February, 18 Mega Watt will be available during 06:00 – 10:00 which will be reserved for the Central Business District and Light- & Heavy Industrial areas. During this period both 66kV power lines will not be available and capacity will be provided by local generation in Walvis Bay. One 66kV line will become available from 10:00 to 19:00. Full restoration of supply to normal condition is expected to only be at 20:00.

It should be noted that the electricity network cannot always be operated to control suburbs individually. Hence, the operation of the larger network will at all times be considered and small parts of residential area might be on during this outage.

During the entire period from 06:00 to 19:00 when NamPower will execute the work, intermittent trips or interruptions are not envisaged but the network remains vulnerable with lower reliablbility..

The new Erongo RED substation is progressing according to plan. Likewise, NamPower is busy with the construction of the new 132kV power lines and has also commenced with the construction of the new 132/11kV substation. The entire project is expected to be completed by January 2017.

Future outages of similar magnitude are expected for March and April.

NOTICE OF POWER OUTAGE TO WALVIS BAY TOWN

Notice is hereby given that the electricity supply will be interrupted on the following date: DATE: 22 February 2015DAY: SundayTIME: 06:00 – 10:00

The power outage will affect the power supply to the following areas:

During this outage period, electricity will still be supplied to the following areas:

NamPortLight Industrial AreaHeavy Industrial AreaCBD Area

The reason for the outage is for NamPower to continue with preparation and construction work for the major upgrade of the infrastructure to the town.

Erongo RED will endeavour to supply crucial areas with electricity and regrets any inconvenience which may result from this outage and would like to ensure that the interests of all customers are considered at all times.

Pitbull Puppies Abandoned on Henties Road

Donna Collins

Two six week old Pitbull-cross puppies were dumped along the Henties Bay Road and saved by South African tourists who were in the area on a fishing trip at the time. The puppies were found a day before Valentine's day, starving, dehydrated and according to the Swakopmund SPCA "in a critical condition"

Theresa badenhorst, a spokesperson for the swakopmund sPca, said the puppies had evidently been dumped and left to die and would not have survived if these good samaritans had not rescued them in time.

"These kind people were on a fishing holiday when they came across the pups on the road. as there were no people in sight, the alarm bells went off," said Theresa.

"The animals were brought to us. Judging by the shocking condition they were in, they would not have made it out there on their own much longer. "We are not certain how long the pups were left in the road, but they would certainly have died," she added, saying that it is shocking to think that people can dump defenceless pups, knowing that they cannot find food and water in the desert.

"The two little boys are with us and we are feeding them supplementary milk to strengthen them up before giving them any inoculation injections, as they are still in a feeble condition.

"dumping unwanted animals is becoming a worrying situation here at the coast and people must know that this is not an acceptable practice and actually very cruel.

"If you cannot keep dogs or cats in your home anymore, bring them to the SPCA – do not just abandon them and leave them to die on a road somewhere."

she pointed out that the swakopmund sPca has drop-off boxes at the kennel's entrance should people wish to get rid of their animals in a kind and considerate way. and should a member of the public wish to take their dogs to the sPca, this facility is available especially for after hours and weekends when no one is on duty at the office.

Theresa pleaded for all cruelty cases to be reported to the police or neighbourhood watch. The dog control unit can be contacted at 081 122 4654 for problem situations or animals roaming the street and the swakopmund sPca's number is 064 404419.

The puppies meanwhile are being well looked after by the kennel staff and once they are strong enough they will be re-homed.

Transforming Careers…..Changing Lives….that is our mission!

Jumping on the Banting Bandwagon

Sharon Brooks

Millions of people across the world are Banting, with new restaurants and websites popping up almost daily. According to fans, the Low Carb High Fat (LCHF) diet described in the bestseller The Real Meal Revolution, has changed countless lives. Written by Professor Tim Noakes, Sally-Ann Creed, Jonno Proudfoot and David Grier, the Real Meal Revolution has truly taken the world by storm.

Tim noakes has popularised the term "banting" - named after the fat london undertaker William Banting of London in the 1860’s - as a synonym for the lchf way of eating. banting famously published his letter on corpulence, which documented his struggle with his weight and, more importantly, his recovery and weight loss using a low carb strategy. as a result of his publication, this diet was widely adopted throughout europe.

It was used by doctors as the

standard weight loss solution until the 1950's, when the Fear of Fat brigade pointed out saturated fat as a cause of heart disease. however, a recent article on the online journal open heart stated that there is absolutely no evidence to back this attack on fat.

one follower of the banting diet, who has lost 10 kilograms in the past few months, describes banting not as a crash diet but a sustainable long-term lifestyle whereby you refrain from eating any processed foods, starches and sugars and replace them with healthy fats such as animal fats and coconut oil.

Initially banting can be quite an adjustment for your body until you stop craving carbohydrates and banters have reported that the food which is the hardest to give up is bread, but eventually your body adjusts to the new eating plan. While you may think that a meal that contains only meat and vegetables cannot possibly be satisfying, committed banters have reported that the addition of natural

fats makes the meals both tasty and filling.

While the meals make you feel full, a meal prepared according to the banting eating plan does not make one feel tired and many people have mentioned that they have more energy and feel less hungry than they did on low fat

diets.according to the real meal revolution,

diabetics are likely to benefit most from the lchf diet. eating carbohydrates drives up blood glucose concentration. normally, your body produces insulin to bring down the glucose concentration in your blood, diabetics, however, are either unable to produce adequate amounts of insulin, or their cells do not respond properly to insulin. It is due to the fact that carbohydrates are the culprits behind high blood glucose levels that the low carbohydrate eating plan described in the book is likely to be highly beneficial to diabetics.

In addition to diabetics, the real meal revolution suggests that banting could be beneficial for several conditions, such as

polycystic ovarian syndrome, menopause, pregnancy, digestive conditions and has even proved advantageous in treatment of adhd.

celebrities such as matthew mcconaughey and Jennifer aniston have jumped on the banting bandwagon along with many others. gary Player believes so strongly in The real meal revolution that he wrote the foreword and states that the biggest change you can make in your life is what you put in your body.

There are many critics of the banting diet, but with thousands of people having experienced such amazing results, it seems that the real meal revolution really is changing the world one meal at a time.

samsung’s privacy policy to the famous book in a tweet on sunday. It has already received 14,000 retweets.

The issue was first highlighted by the daily beast, which warned readers not to talk about incriminating matters such as “tax evasion” and “drug use” in front their TV sets.

samsung insists it takes consumer privacy seriously, but did not name the third party which translates speech to text.

Meet the People Who Have Volunteered to Die on MarsThousands of people are competing to be the first humans to travel to Mars and colonize it. The only catch–they can never come back.

mars one, an interplanetary travel nonprofit, will soon select the next round of wannabe astronauts from the nearly 700 current finalists. While making a short movie about the competition for The guardian, stateless media had a chance to speak to a few people vying for one of the coveted seats on a mars one spaceship. They learned the following: they are all really smart, incredibly brave, and a little bit crazy.

actually, they are a lot of bit crazy. and that is a good thing. because it takes a certain kind of person to choose to live the rest of their lives stranded on a desert planet with no breathable air, no Netflix, no snapchat, no game of Thrones, no general Tso’s chicken, and no long romantic walks on the beach. oh and yeah, no sex.

here is a proposed survival guide to life on mars. do you have the right stuff to make it on the red Planet?

What you will have to live without:• Sex. Colonists will be discouraged

from intercourse because supplies would not support the arrival of a space baby.

• Beer. Sorry, carbonated beverages would not survive the low atmospheric pressure of mars.

• Grass fed venison burgers with black truffle oil and chopped prosciutto. And any other food that can not be freeze-dried.

• Your loved ones. You think Skype on earth is annoying? Wait until you’re 35 million miles away.Your 2026 World cup tickets.

Japan is renowned for being at the forefront of technology, and the country’s ongoing love affair with robots has helped them maintain their position as world leaders in this industry. In spite of this, it was still a little surprising to find out that Japanese scientists have progressed the field so much that a hotel is due to be opened this year in Nagasaki which will be half-staffed by robots.

henn-na hotel, which means either “strange” or “change” hotel, you pick the one that suits it best, will come to life in July this year. The 72-room hotel will be staffed by 10 people alongside 10 robots, in case you miss interacting with people. These so-called “actroids” are designed to be remarkably, and slightly creepily, human-like. developed by osaka university and manufactured by Kokoro, a branch of the company that licenses hello Kitty, the humanoids bear the features and mannerisms of young Japanese women.

Three robots will man the hotel’s reception and, after checking you in,

another industrial robot will deal with your luggage. These actroids are joined by numerous porters and service robots which carry out a variety of everyday tasks, such as making coffee, cleaning and delivering laundry. alongside this futuristic team, the hotel will have various other high-tech features, such as facial recognition in place of key cards. guests will also be able to request additional amenities through a tablet computer provided by the hotel.

although the hotel will initially have half of its staff as robots, in the future the park hopes to have more than 90% of hotel services operated by robots. and it’s thanks to all these robots that room prices can be kept low, alongside other features which reduce operating costs such as solar panels and energy efficient LED lights. But of course, it’s going to be popular, so the rooms will be reserved based on a bidding system that starts at around $60 (7,000 yen), but capped well below the rates of rooms in other hotels at the park.

World's First RobotRun Hotel Due To Open In Japan This July

We live in a world where so many of us are ruled by debt. We work long hours to earn as much as we possibly can but still find ourselves drowning in mortgage payments and credit card bills. As far away as “freedom” may be for most of us, it is still a distant light at the end of the tunnel – something that is attainable… eventually.

In a bold move to help those whose light faded long ago, the Croatian government – under the leadership of its Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic – has decided to forgive the debt of 60,000 of its poorest citizens. meaning that 60,000 croatians will be given the opportunity for a fresh start, something that the croatian government hopes will both set them personally on the right path and also stimulate the country’s economy through new spending.

To qualify for the forgiveness,

the collective monthly income of a family (without savings or assets) must not exceed 2,500 croatian Kuna -approximately $367 US dollars – while the collective monthly income of an individual must be under 1270 hrk ($187 US).

With this unheard of move, Croatia becomes the first country in the european union to ever offer debt forgiveness to any of its citizens.

“We are doing all we can to make people’s lives easier in this protracted and strenuous crisis and give them a chance for a fresh start.” – Prime minister Zoran milanovic

To both protect itself and to also encourage its citizens to use this grace wisely, the croatian government has stated that it will only be available to each household or individual this one time.h t t p : / / w w w . c o l l e c t i v e -

'No Miracle' on the Horizon' for Schumi

Nearly 64 Million Vehicles Recalled in US

GENEVA, Switzerland - Nearly 14 months after his late-2013 skiing fall little new is known about the great Michael Schumacher's medical progress.

The 46-year-old is reportedly cared for by a private medical team numbering 15 professionals around the clock at his mansion on the shore of lake geneva.

but in a new report published by the uK newspaper express, it is claimed the seven-time F1 champion "remains mute with limited awareness of his environment"

and still "unable to walk". "Progress is painfully slow. "There is no miracle on the horizon, said an insider."

The report said schumacher's family had now imposed a total media blackout on news about the former ferrari and mercedes driver while tents have been erected to stop paparazzi photographing the F1 star. Peter hamlyn, described as a neuro-surgeon and sports head-injury expert, said:

"What tortures the public is the same thing that tortures the family – progress is

WASHINGTON, United States - Nearly 64-million cars and trucks were recalled in the US in 2014 for safety defects - a record-breaking year for both recalls and numbers, a US agency said.

automakers issued 803 recalls through 2014 covering 63.95-million vehicles, the most since 1966, the National highway Transportation safety administration said.

The year was marked by extensive general motors recalls for defective ignition switches and other problems, as well as multi-company recalls for faulty crash bags made by Japanese firm Takata.

The head of the safety administration, mark Rosekind, said: "These figures demonstrate the need for vigorous and effective oversight to remove safety defects from our highways."

Of the 803 recalls, 123 were influenced by the agency's investigations and enforcement

efforts.general motors, the largest

us automaker, began a recall of 2.6-million cars in february 2014 for defective ignition switches that it now has acknowledged caused at least 52 deaths.

The us congress and Justice department are investigating why gm waited more than a decade after uncovering the problem to start recalling cars.

In total, gm recalled nearly 27-million vehicles in the us for various defects throughout 2014.

Takata's faulty crash bags, linked to at least five deaths in the us and other countries, led to the recall of millions of vehicles worldwide by 10 major automakers.

In November 2014 the agency ordered a recall of all cars in the us with the suspect Takata bags. honda, Takata's biggest crash-bag customer, recalled about nine million automobiles in the us.

Takata is under investigation because of the crash-bag defect. (Wheels24)

slow, progress is uncertain. If you look at severe head-injury victims who go on to make a good recovery - and I am not saying all do - it will always be a story of years."

Former Formula 1 doctor Gary hartstein doubts that michael schumacher will ever recover from his ski-crash brain injuries. britain's Daily Mail claims the F1 legend's wife corinna is spending the equivalent of R1.7-million per week on his care at their swiss estate, including an around-the-clock medical team and state-of-the-art equipment.

however, the newspaper believes schumacher remains in a "minimally conscious" state and is not yet even sitting up unaided let alone walking or talking. hartstein, who has been outspoken throughout the schumacher family's ordeal in 2014, thinks it is worrying that so little is known officially about the former ferrari and mercedes driver's progress.

hartstein said: "as time goes on it becomes less and less likely that Michael will emerge to any significant extent."

he speculated that - in effect - schumacher remains basically comatose.

hartstein said: "life expectancy for a comatose patient who does not improve neurologically is measured in months to relatively few years."

"The probability is that he will never be the man he was before the accident. That much is starkly clear." (Wheels24)
