One day I was off work anddecided I’d had enough and whatwould I really like to do (at mytime of life) so I thought aReceptionist post - I am goodwith people and enjoy meeting people.

I composed my CV sent it to afew job agencies on-line and wentand bought the Examinerwhereupon I saw the advert forJWQ – basically emailed my CV,the next week I had the interviewand two weeks later got the job!

What does your role involve? It’s much more than aReceptionist – very varied. Aswell as meeting and greetingvisitors, answering the phones, there are delivery notes and palletnotes to arrange, quite a bit ofadmin work, invoicing, spreadsheets, etc. I am always keptbusy which is a good thing andfeel I have picked the work upquickly. I recently had a tour of thesite and it’s so interesting seeinghow the stone is retrieved fromthe quarry in such huge sizes thencut into the pieces required for manufacture.

Are you enjoying it so far?I really enjoy it, everyone isbrilliant – and I mean this sosincerely, and the main thing isthey all have my sense of stupid humour.

The Road to Success

A word from Chris Smith - Myers Building Supplies Operations Manager

As part of the initiative to grow and develop the Myers Group, we are looking for the next generation ofManagers to enable us to work smarter in terms of driving sales and the business forward.

One of these initiatives is the internal promotion of Assistant Managers to help drive the business andgive an extra level of leadership within the Building Supplies branches. As we look to grow the businessand enhance profitability, it is apparent that the next generation of Managers needs to be in place to helpfacilitate these aims.

The first part is to appoint Assistant Managers, the second part is to put in place training to help themgrow into the future leaders of the business. These Assistant Managers will allow the Branch Managerstime to focus on and look after their local customers, developing stronger ties and increasing business inthe full knowledge that their branches are in safe hands.

Please see below your colleagues who have recently been appointed. James, Katie and I wish them every success and look forward to their future development in supporting their managers and teams in their respective branches.

Recent unsafe acts The industry recognises that 96% of all injuries and incidents occur because of unsafe acts and only4% due to unsafe conditions. As an example, a pallet is left in a walkway creating a hazard, this maybe an unsafe condition, but it was created by the unsafe act of an individual.

In recent weeks some great examples of near miss reporting has been demonstrated with somequick and effective corrective actions to ensure it doesn’t occur again:

I could have saved a life that day,But I chose to look the other way.It wasn’t that I didn’t care;I had the time, and I was there.

But I didn’t want to seem a fool,Or argue over a safety rule.I knew he’d done the job before; If I spoke up he might get sore.

The chances didn’t seem that bad;I’d done the same, he knew I had.So I shook my head and walked by;He knew the risks as well as I.

He took the chance, I closed an eye;And with that act, I let him die.I could have saved a life that day,But I chose to look the other way.

Now every time I see his wife,I know I should have saved his life. That guilt is something I must bear; But isn’t something you need to share.

If you see a risk that others takeThat puts their health or life at stake,The question asked or thing you say;Could help them live another day.

If you see a risk and walk away,Then hope you never have to say,“I could have saved a life that day,But I chose to look the other way.”

Leadership Training

In January & February, the Company invited Managers andSupervisors from across the business to attend a trainingcourse at Myers House. The objective of the training was toprovide attendees with the tools to lead their teams andimprove safety performance throughout the Group.

One area of discussion included the ‘journey’ that theMyers Group is on. The chart below highlights the declinein injury rates following the introduction of a number ofschemes aimed at improving competence and providing asafer working environmental for all.

The training was a great success and we have seen somereally positive action taken as a result. Thank you to all who contributed.

The course was led by a team of 5 who each gave different views and opinions:

I Chose To Look The Other Way...

On a final note, the training discussed ‘Not Walking By’. The following poem explains:

James BerryHis thoughts as the Managing Director.

Chris SmithTo share his experiences atother businesses and his viewson what is happening withinthe Group.

Lisa Brown & Jack Morris To share their experiences asa Branch Manager and YardSupervisor following a seriousincident at Brighouse.

Apprentice Open Day atKirklees College

Earlier this month a team from the Company, including Directors James andKatie Berry, attended an Apprentice Open Day at Kirklees College to speakwith young trainees about possible apprenticeships within the Company.

It was a successful event, with plenty of interest from all who attended. The team took time to speak to both tutors and students alike, with theengineering body shop repair and fabrication facilities that the collegeprovides, being cited as very impressive.

The opportunity also arose to conduct some cycle safety. Our campaign, which promotes the awareness of blind spots on most HGV vehicles topedestrians and cyclists, was well received and surprised both students and staff.

The Company is using the services of Kirklees college for lathe training forour engineers and the initial feedback has been positive from all who have attended.

We aim to employ engineering apprentices in Motor Vehicle (HGV) that haveexpressed an interest in working for the Myers Group once they have passedthe acceptance criteria for Kirklees College.

MP visits Silsden

Keighley MP Kris Hopkins visited Myers Building Supplies Silsden recently to hearabout the challenges facing the construction industry. Mr Hopkins met MD JamesBerry, Branch Manager Sean Bullock and the rest of the Silsden team to betterunderstand the challenges facing the construction industry and tour the Silsden branch.

James Berry said: “The construction industry is recovering across the country. But it is amuch softer recovery in the North than the South East and it is important that thismessage is heard in Westminster. There is also a major disparity between nationalconstruction and distribution companies and regional operators. We have seen the impactof schemes such as Help to Buy largely benefit the national companies. We are gratefulfor the time Kris Hopkins spent with us to hear more about our business and the wider industry.”

Growth in the construction industry slowed for the third consecutive month inDecember, but the UK’s booming property market helped round off the best year forBritish builders since 1997. Housebuilding was the strongest performing part of theconstruction industry.

Mr Hopkins said: “Myers Group is a growing business with a long tradition in Yorkshire. Asa valued employer in Silsden, I am here to support their growth and further investment inthe area. Builders merchants are key to supporting the many builders and allied tradeswho are so important to the local economy and driving growth.”

Over the last few months, we as a family have spent asignificant amount of time looking at succession planning for the business.

The primary focus has always been on ensuring the Myers Groupremains within the Myers family for generations to come.

As the 3rd generation of the family business, Uncle John and Mumbecame custodians of the shares in the early 1990’s. They have felt forsome time that it was important to start the share transfer process tothe 4th generation to better reflect the roles that the family membersnow play within the organisation.

This complex process has been completed and all four family membersnow have a similar shareholding giving a much greater degree of certaintyfor the future of our family business. As part of this process we have allcommitted to ensuring these shares cannot be distributed to anyoneother than the current directors or future generations in due course.

This change only strengthens our resolve to continue to drive thebusiness forward and achieve the same level of success and growth asprevious generations have before us.

With all your support and the opportunity Uncle John and Mum havenow given us we remain committed to making the Myers Group one ofYorkshire’s largest and most successful family businesses.
