That nip is creeping back into the air and the daylight hours are getting more and more precious – winter is

rolling in, but there’s no need to feel down in the dumps. Winter is when you can have a different kind of fun – the cosier kind. And you can refresh your wardrobe for a new season, exploring a whole new look!

Once again, The Hub is proud to sponsor the Winter Warmth campaign with our friends at East Coast Radio – for the fourth year in a row! Time really does fl y when you’re having fun and doing good. You can genuinely make a difference to people’s lives by donating at any Hub store or online at www.ecr.co.za. We helped over 45 000 people to keep out the chill last year, and we can extend those numbers even further with your valued support! This campaign is a big highlight on our calendar – please let it be one for you too.

We had a ton of fun shooting our kidswear and sleepwear photos at the Sutherland’s showroom in Riverhorse Valley, so a very big thank you to them from all of us!

Heat one roomOnly heat the room you are using. If you are going to be working at your laptop while a meal is being cooked, stay somewhere near the stove to feel its heat.

FlasksBoil water and keep in thermos fl asks for hot drinks when the power is scheduled to be switched off.

If you still need more warmth? Put the heater close to you – it’s you who needs the warmth, not the entire room. Unplug the heater when not in use. This will help to reduce your electricity cost and ensure the safety of your home at the same time. Avoid using under fl oor heating unless really necessary.

Down with DraughtsSneaky draughts let the heat out. Adopt the draught snake! Roll up a towel and put it along the bottom of your door, or make the coolest draught snake ever. Use scraps of fabric or a tie, and fi ll with sand or cat litter for weight.

Cool your JetsMost geysers are set to about 60°C by installers, but the majority of us don’t need our water to be that hot. Lower the temperature on your geyser to 50°C or lower and reduce your water heating costs by 6% to 10%. Better yet, it might be time to go solar!

Mind the GapGaps and leaks in the edges of windows, where pipes/wires exit, etc. can sap your energy effi ciency. Seal them up with caulking and weatherstripping. To fi nd them, get your assistant outside to blow a hair dryer around each window while you hold a lit candle inside.

Get ToastyInstead of unpeeling your layers of jerseys and cranking up the heat indoors while it’s cold outside, just keep all that body heat locked in! A light long-sleeved cardigan is worth 2 degrees of heat, while a chunky jersey adds 4 degrees of warmth.

General Tips Switch over from incandescent light bulbs to compact fl uorescents, unplug all electronic appliances and devices when you’re not using them in order to stop them from sucking “phantom” energy. To make it easier, you can plug a host of devices into an adapter on an extension cord and turn it off one time.

Homely Recipes

COMFORTFOOD that’s easy as pie

Roasted Pear & Butternut Soup with Crumbled StiltonPear and butternut roasted to sweet perfection and used to make a velvety soup, then amped up with the addition of some Stilton! 6 servings, 1 1/3 cups each

MethodGet the oven up to 200°C. Pop the butternut, pears, tomatoes, leeks, oil, garlic, and salt (1/4 tsp) ‘n pepper into a large bowl and toss it so that all the veggies are covered. Spread them out on a large rimmed baking sheet and pop in the oven. Roast for 40-55min or until the veggies are soft. Allow to cool for a bit and then put half of the veg and half of the broth into a blender and puree until creamy. Pour the puree into a large saucepan and then follow the same process with the remaining veg and broth. Add to the pan with the other half after blending and stir in the remaining salt. Cook over a medium to low heat while stirring for 10 minutes, then pour into 6 bowls and fi nish with crumbled cheese or chives. Tip: Cover and pop in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to a month. When you reheat, you can add more broth if you’d like.

Easy Beef StewWhen the cold comes creeping in, a generous portion of home cooking is just the thing to warm the cockles of your heart. This recipe can be even easier by doing it in your slow cooker. Simmer for 6-8 hours instead of on the stove for 2 hours, adding the veggies an hour or two before serving.

Method

Get a large pot nice and hot, then dribble with vegetable oil and add the onion, garlic, beef, salt and pepper. Cook onion until see-through and brown the beef. Add the tomatoes, stock, Worcestershire sauce, paprika and rosemary. Bring to a boil and then turn down to a simmer. Leave it simmering for 1.5 to 2 hours with the lid on - or until the beef is tender. Then add the potatoes and carrots before simmering with the lid on for another 30-40min. Garnish with parsley and serve.

Mmm, hot choc - it warms your hands, tantalises your taste buds and fi lls your belly while you’re snuggled under a blankie on a comfy couch...

Ingredients

1 cup milk (I use skim)

2 1/2 Tbsp Nutella

1 Tbsp cocoa

Tiny pinch of salt

Method

Pop a small saucepan onto the stove and set to medium heat. Add all the ingredients and whisk them together until they’re blended and hot. Pour into a mug and fi nish off with homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings.

HOMEMADE WHIPPED CREAM

1 cup heavy whipping cream

2 Tbsp sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Put the bowl and beaters from your electric mixer in the freezer for ten minutes, as this will help the whipped cream to stiffen faster. Take all the ingredients and pop them into your chilled bowl, then start to beat. Start off on a low setting and work your way up to a high one gradually. Careful not to overbeat.

Banish the winter blues with these winter hues.

W inter colour palettes are often fi lled with neutrals like black and brown, but not this season. Spring colours take on a deeper,

richer hue and make for a sophisticated coupling when paired with darker leggings. The days may be grey, but there’s no need for your closet to be!

Worried about shivering? Put on a pair of tights or layer in a polo neck. To fi nish the look, slip on some high heels for night or a pair of brogues or loafers (see opposite) for a full retro day look.

Get into the swinging sixties spirit this winter with a mod-inspired shift dress. Go for dresses with a higher neckline and a slightly boxy shape.

Socks in shoesFew women really like wearing socks in their shoes, but after Rihanna sported pumps with a pair of socks, millions of her fans started copying her. If socks in shoes seem too much for you, try warm tights instead.

LacingA more delicate and feminine look in spring, lacing has discovered its dark (and sexy) side this winter.

Men InspiredOpt for a cheeky take on the menswear-inspired trend and try on a brogue or loafer.

MaterialsFabrics that prevail this winter are leather, patent and reptile skins, suede and satin. There’s also a lot of lace and occasional fur this season.

Knits are a winter staple. Being light and thin (but warm), they’re great for layering. However, they’re taking centre stage this season. Three statement trends to look out for are:

BRIGHT COLOURS. Be bold and get a knit in a solid colour. Keep them casual with a hoody or bell sleeves. CHUNKY KNITS. Tall women can get away with an oversized chunky sweater, but those who love the trend but not the bulk should look for jerseys with a chunky knit detail or a short, cropped fi t.

FAUX FUR EDGING. Embrace the tundra with an Arctic infl uence. Luckily, our winters don’t get that cold, so go with a stylish fur trim.

Finally, slip on your favourite demins and some ankle boots and you’re good to go!

One of the essentials in winter fashion is layering. Layering is using different pieces of clothing, one on top of the other, to create an interesting look. This style calls for attention, as bits and pieces of different fabrics and colours peek out from underneath. Try to create the layers in contrasting colours. The bottom layers should be tightly

fi tted and the top loosely fl owing. Try wearing a long sleeved tee with a poncho or baggy knit. Another trend is to wear two t-shirts with different lengths underneath, also in contrasting colours. Then, wear a scarf to pull it all together.

A suit makes you feel powerful, and reminds you that you mean

business. It creates a beautiful silhouette and is comfortable. Above all, fit is it. Too big, and you look like you played dress-up in your mother’s cupboard. Too small, and you look clueless.

Check out our tips to prevent suit crisis:

- Take your measurements before you head out suit shopping.- If you need a belt, the pants are too big. If they’re tight, they’re too small.- The sleeve of your jacket should end where the base of your thumb meets the wrist.- Shoulder pads should be in line with the end of your shoulders.- Turn around in the mirror; if the jacket just covers the curve of your bum at the top of your thigh, that’s perfect.

Now go get ‘em tiger, cos you look like a dominator! With class, of course…

The 1-2-3 Winter Skin Care Routine for Men

Guys, don’t let the haters call you metrosexual. The fact of the matter is that skin care is a basic

necessity. It’s like eating a balanced diet or getting exercise – if you want to age well and maintain your

youthful good looks, then you better get on it.

Nowadays, most dudes get that, and there are plenty of male-specifi c skin care ranges on the market. But how and when and why to apply?

In winter, you’ll fi nd that your skin gets dry, itchy, and fl aky – maybe you even suffer from eczema. A good skin care regime can provide relief and make you feel great, too.

Step 1: CleanseFirst, you need to remove any dirt, impurities and pollutants from your skin before you apply any other products. Wash your face twice a day, but don’t use ordinary soap. Soap dries out the skin, so keep it for your bod. Find a face wash that you like.

Step 2: ToneToner tightens your pores. Toning after cleansing almost “seals” in the clean, so that dirt and impurities fi nd it much harder to mess with your complexion. So, less blackheads and less stress-induced breakouts. Get a toner that’s specifi cally designed for your skin – toners with alcohol in will be fi ne for oily skin but play havoc with already dry skin.

Step 3: HydrateVital in winter. Cold temperatures and dry air pillage the moisture from your skin, so pick out a good hydrating cream that leaves the feel you like (some may feel sticky, others sink in nicely). When choosing one, check out the ingredients – things like Vitamin E and green tea offer long lasting benefi ts.

Exfoliating also clears away in order to create a clean slate – only, instead of cleaning away dirt; it cleans away dead skin cells. Always exfoliate before you shave, otherwise once a week for normal skin and 3 times a week for the oilier skinned.

Right, now you have the skinny on skin care but don’t forget that shaving also thins out your skin. This simple formula is all you need to slow the ageing process and have totally touchable skin.

Charl Crous strikes aPOSEWe have an Olympian doing the honours this issue, as swimmer Charl Crous dons some Hub threads! Not too shabby, either. We got a chance to fi nd out how this 2012 Olympic hopeful rolls!

Stylist tip: Accessorise. No longer the domain of the ladies, men can join in the fun too. Hats, scarves, and coloured sock layers all add an unexpected dimension and can really pull a look together.

Stylist tip: Colour. Lastly, don’t be afraid to play with colour. It breaks up the monotony and adds interest and fun to an outfi t. Go bold and wear a colourful top layer, like a jacket, jersey or jeans. For a subtle look, layer under a black jersey.

V-NECK T-SHIRT 7995

VS. BOOTSSNEAKERS

Boots give you a distinctly stronger and more punk look, and are great for a jaunt down to your local pub. They also offer more protection on rainy, sleety days.

Sneakers are an easy go- to shoe and appropriate for all casual occasions. They’re also a fun way to add a fl ash of funky colour to your look.

Both styles offer a different aesthetic and message when worn, and can completely change the feel of your outfi t. So, decide on the look you want and rock it!

This well-grounded young man cites the world-record-breaking freestyle relay team at the epic 2004 Athens Olympics as one of his earliest motivations.

Aside from that legendary SA team, Charl gives lot of credit to his family for the constant love and support shown to him over the years. At 18, Charl was the fastest 100m backstroker in the world! Today, he’s the African Champion in the 50m and 100m backstroke, won a silver in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and is currently ranked in the Top 15 for men’s 100m and 200m backstroke! Charl’s training schedule is hectic: four hours a day, six days a week, including gym

two to three times a week! So, what about the guy behind the swimmer? His favourite SA band is Prime Circle and he loves rock music, he’s English-speaking but loves Afrikaans music, he almost drowned at the age of four, and he’s just started modelling. Apparently, he’s really enjoying it (lucky for us)! When asked why backstroke is his favourite and not butterfl y or freestyle, his surprising response is further testament to his achievements: “I’ve specialised in backstroke because I suffer from sports induced asthma and fi nd it easier to control my breathing with my head out of the water.” Charl has started branching out into public and motivational speaking, which he’s really enjoying.

His taste in girls? “She must be honest, religious, family orientated, ambitious, confi dent, adventurous, sporty, sociable, humble, smart and witty, with a good sense of humour.” Wow, the man knows what he wants! With his focus and determination, he’s likely to get it! With the 2012 London Olympics only months away, we asked Charl about the biggest moment in his swimming career, and he had no hesitation in answering: “It was winning a silver medal in the 4x100 Medley Relay at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. At that moment, I realised that we had a realistic chance of medalling at the 2012 London Olympics!”We wish him all the best in the future. Go for it, Charl!

Get Super OldA study done in 2010 with women between the ages of 50 and 79 discovered that more deaths befell women who slept for less than 5 hours a night. Getting enough sleep means that your quality of life is better and subsequently, that you live longer.

that does happen. Your mind “practices” the things you learnt during the day while you sleep, so nap on and get smarter!

Get SmartAdolescents who don’t sleep well or sleep too little often battle with learning and paying attention, while even college-going young people who managed to get their 8 hours a night got better results than their late-night-partying counterparts.

Get SlimmerSleep to lose weight? Where do we sign up? Seriously though, recent gains in weight could be due to bad sleep. The part of the brain in charge of sleep also deals with metabolism. Being tired leads to an upsurge in your appetite hormones – hence the sleepy/bored inclination to eat incessantly.

Get HappySleep deprivation leadsto distraction, listlessness, disinterest, emotional instability and anxiety – so if you’re not in the mood for some good old-fashioned depression, rest up.

Get SafeBelieve it or not, tiredness from not enough sleep was responsible for even more fatal “single car run off the road” accidents in 2009 than drunk driving! Everything from your alertness to reaction times are affected by sleepiness, so think before you get behind the wheel.

Highly energetic play builds a base of cardiovascular fi tness, and aids in hand-eye coordination, dexterity, agility – basically, all those little-monkey games

set up an athletic future. Climbing, painting, and playing catchers all fall into this category.

Social play with other kids helps them to develop their abilities to communicate, share, get along, negotiate, compromise, and form connections with others (their ability to bond with people will also guard against mental issues later on). Sense of self and individuality also get a big boost from playing amongst peers and away from adult interference.

Free play, when there’s no structure or rules to follow (as opposed to ‘formal’ games), allows for imagination and creativity to bloom. When kids create whole new worlds for themselves, then

they learn how to innovate. Being in a space free from all the imposing rules of the real world (whether at home or school) allows them to feel more free and powerful, and thus feeds self-esteem.

However, learning to operate within the boundaries of rules is also good for your kids – that way, they learn how to gauge the fl exibility and strictness of different rules. Also, these types of games are the ones that are most often played with parents – a great opportunity for interaction and quality time. This is when your kids learn by seeing how you react and behave, and get to engage in games that they wouldn’t be able to do on their own.

Learn new games or make up a few! Let your kids make up a few rules, too – their confi dence will soar.

PLAY TIME!Kids at play may look like nothing more than carefree frolickers at fi rst glance, but look closer and you’ll see that they’re developing essential lifelong skills.

Being active is massively important – active kids eat better and sleep better, have more energy and thus cope better with the demands of each day. As time goes on and they neither need nor want your supervision, they’ll seek out their friends more. Be sure to have their friends over and to encourage creative play that equips them with skills and gets them to try new things simultaneously. You’ll know that they’re having the kind of fun that will stand them in good stead, and that friend will have such a good time that your child will be invited over and you’ll have a day off!
