publications that build community
my hometown
Seems it was such a short time ago, we were announcing the opening of Starpointe’s WaterPark season, while offering tips and recipes sure to spoil mom for Mother’s Day last year. Then, like magic (ta dah), spring has sprung and we’re here again. After finally packing away the Christmas décor and also facing the realization that it does in fact rain in the desert, it’s time for a change of the season once again.
Change, however, isn’t all about the weather. Besides the obvious rising temperatures, a change of season can be life experiences, too. It can involve redesigning game plans, following the ever-changing circumstances and events that shape our lives. This spring my husband and I will watch our twin daugh-ters receive their high-school diplomas, opening the gateway for a new season in their futures. As they transition into the college years, I’ll be forced to reor-ganize our nest, the soon-to-be-empty one, which will take some mental creativity to reinvent. Here comes change - ready or not.
This month, My Hometown Estrella offers some new ideas to enhance your personal paths this season. Our cover story reveals that a benefit dinner event,
supported by this community, has allowed a new door of creative classes to be opened this summer. Why not enhance your creativity with a photography class? Maybe you’ll organize a girl’s night of relaxation at home with a Spa Escape party? How about dig-ging into summer’s hottest reads while sharing the experience with fellow readers in the newly formed Starpointe Book Club? If you’re a business owner, there are new networking capabilities in the commu-nity with the Estrella Business Networking group.
The senior class at Estrella Foothills High School graduates an academically excelling class and a two-year state championship girl’s soccer team, choosing a motto to represent their steps into the future, taken from dialogue between a basketball player and his coach in the 2005 movie, Coach Carter. The motto represents a positive outlook on personal reinvention and tackles the challenge of season change within each of us. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”
I hope you’ll empower your own personal moti-vational tools during the change of this season, in order to create a positively perfect summer. Dive in!

who dunnit?
With an event like this, the secret to success begins with the audi-ence. From start to finish, this dinner theater event cast the audience in a starring role; those who attended the event were major players in creating both the backdrop and the ambiance. Volunteer hostesses decorated the tables for parties of eight, given only a white tablecloth as their artistic canvas. The result? Breathtaking! The tables, themselves, were masterpieces: fresh flower centerpieces complete with peacock feathers and homemade napkin embellishments. One table even fea-tured a vintage radio as the centerpiece. In the soft stage and candle light, it was hard not to believe that you had been transported back to that era of elegance, charisma, and timeless charm. The stage was effectively set…
The cast of the evening entertainment was not comprised of pro-fessional actors, but they were individuals wholly committed to their characters: a deliciously flawed group of gangsters, Upper Eastside snobs, nouveaux riche bootleggers and devious flappers. Combine this “wedding party” with an original plot filled with zany twists and there is certain to be a hilarious intrigue! The costumes were flashy and
submitted by estrella residents kristin caraway and Debra goley
authentic; and once again, the audience was enticed into joining in the fun, as many dressed up in 1920’s fashion. Enhancing the drama, there was background music of all the greats: Ella Fitzgerald, Scott Joplin, Billie Holiday, and Louis Armstrong, just to name a few. The highlight was the two tragically comedic death scenes that lasted the entire length of “Bye, Bye Blackbird.” The victims, of course, engaged the audience wedding guests in their dying antics, as they staggered across the room, finally dying in the arms of an audience member. The dinner feature? A four-course, gourmet delight that commenced with a cheese and cracker platter and Caesar salad, progressed to a choice of chicken alfredo or shrimp penne Fra Diavlo entrees, with a finale being, of course, wedding cake.
Who was the murderer in this scandalous caper? To find out all the juicy details, you can check out The Creative Arts Academy website at www.caa-az.org. The reason for the “roaring success,” however, is no mystery at all. It is the spirit of artistic expression itself that defines our culture and is alive and well in each of us. A story that captured the fun and frivolity of a beloved era, the visual beauty created by a united effort, and the music that made it all come to life combined in a celebration to inspire the human spirit.
“A few community leaders right here in Estrella felt the tug on our hearts to make sure we develop a life-long appreciation for the arts and encourage growth in this arena to develop the artist within our chil-dren. Hence the CREATIVE ARTS ACADEMY was born. The 501c3 not for profit organization strives to keep the arts alive in this economic time where art, dance and music programs are being threatened from exis-tence in our children’s lives. We all know that the arts do strengthen our math, science and right brain activity; imagination is free to explore pro-viding sensible ways to tackle problem solving and encourage growth. All this plays a part in having an aptitude in the visual and performing arts. We are fortunate to have this program in our backyard this summer!”
Visit www.caa-az.org to REGISTER today for classes for everyone from preschool to adults! It’s surely a good thing for all in our commu-nity!

estrella Business Owners networking group
submitted by members of the estrella Business Owners networking group
A new group has been formed for business owners and independent contractors that live in Estrella. Wouldn’t you rather use a company or per-son that lives in your own community versus one that is miles away? What a great way to support the community you live in, especially in today’s economy. There are so many talented and unique individuals that live in this great community and the Estrella Business Owners Group wants to gather them into one easily accessible source for anyone to find when needed. They have created a simple website www.estrellabusiness.com. The goal of this group is to spread the word about this site. There are currently over 25 member businesses and membership is growing every week. The directory is updated after each meeting.
This group is open to any Estrella resident that owns a business or is an independent contractor responsible for their own income and accounting (W9 requirement). Within the group, members will promote each other while servicing their current clients; they will look to each other for guidance, knowledge and support to help their companies be stronger. And, they are always looking at ways the group can support the community with donations, sponsorships and events.
Meetings are held every other Tuesday morning at 8 am at the Starpointe Residents Club in a conference room. One evening meeting is held per month on a Tuesday evening at 7 pm at Starpointe Residents Club. The location within the Club is subject to change based on avail-ability. Attendance at these meetings is very important for the member and also for the rest of the group. The guidelines and framework of the group are still in the beginning stages; input and ideas are highly encouraged.
A calendar of the meetings and events is available on their website at www.estrellabusiness.com. Also, the group information can be accessed under the group tab on www.lifeinestrella.com and a discussion topic for the group has been added to the EMR community forum. A facebook group page has been set up as EMR Business Networking group. If you have any questions or need further information, please call Cynthia Powell at 623-694-5127 or email [email protected]. Look for the business directory and refrigerator magnets at upcoming Estrella com-munity events.

Based upon resident feedback and comments expressed in HOA Board Meetings, the Board on December 1, 2009 established the Estrella Community Patrol Ad Hoc (Standing) Committee and tasked them with assess-ing the future role of patrol services in our community. The committee’s work began with the appointment of HOA Resident Directors, Dennis Brungardt and Freeda Setlzer, to co-chair the committee and the solicitation of resident participation on the committee.
The committee’s participation includes Resident Board Directors, resident representa-tives from the Covenant Review Committee and volunteers of the community’s 42 neighborhoods. In addition, participa-tion includes the Community Manager, the Design Review Director, and Goodyear Police Department acting in an advisory role.
Background information
Patrol Services have functioned as a combination of security, safety, and covenant enforcement within our community for almost twenty years. From a practical standpoint, the community patrol is limited in their authority to provide “security” services. Their current role includes safeguarding of com-munity assets (i.e., private parks, common areas, Residents Center, etc.) and calling upon the Police Department in cases of observed criminal activity. In addition, the patrol has had a role in covenant enforcement and providing support for a limited number of maintenance tasks (i.e., locking community restrooms, opening and closing the gates at Star Tower, reporting inopera-tive streetlights, removing unauthorized signs from common areas, etc.).
Over the last several years, the presence of the Goodyear Police Department in our community has improved considerably. Much of this improvement can be attributed to the implementation of a “beat integrity” policy by the Goodyear Police Department in 2008. This policy promotes a Police Department presence in our community twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week. This approach allows residents to depend upon the

Police Department has been a contributing factor in the HOA’s decision to reduce the patrol’s budget in 2009-2010.
As most Estrella Community residents are aware, the use of patrol services has been reduced significantly over
the past two years. For 2008, the patrol services budget was $262,866 (about $6 per household per month) and coverage was provided 7 days a week/24 hours per day plus supplemental coverage of the lakes. In
2009, the budget was reduced to $115,200 ($1.81 per household per month) and coverage was reduced to 7 days
a week/14 hours per day. For this year, the 2010 budget is $57,600 ($1.01 per household per month) and coverage provided 7 days a week/6 hours per day.
resident patrOl services survey feedback
In January 2010, the Estrella Community Patrol Ad Hoc Committee ini-tiated a survey to understand resident’s opinions regarding the patrol services. The surveys were placed on two community web sites during the January 11 through January 22, 2010 period. Five questions were asked, with 242 resi-dents responding to the survey.
A brief summary of the survey conclusions follows:
• A majority of responses, 156 of 242 (65%), indicated community patrol as having a significant to moderate impact on safety and security in the community.
• A small number of responses, 31 of 242 (13%), indicated the community patrol has no effect on safety or security within the community.
• Given the survey options, 160 of 242 (66%), residents advocated cover-age 7 days per week/14 hours or 24 hours per day. In addition, 42 of 242 (17%), advocated coverage 7 days per week/7 hours per day. The remain-ing residents proposed, 40 of 242 (17%), that patrol services should be eliminated.

• Resident responses, 76 of 242 (32%), thought that patrol duties could be done by volunteers, but the respondents would not volunteer. A strong majority, 138 of 242 (57%), felt the management company should perform these duties.
• The majority of residents, 130 of 241 (54%), had never called commu-nity patrol for assistance. The remaining respondents, 82 of 241 (34%) had occasion to call community patrol 1-3 times in the last year, and 31 of 241 (12%) had contacted community patrol more than 4 times in the past year.
• A significant majority, 187 of 234 (80%) feel that the patrol services should be continued, with 147 of 234 (63%) advocating coverage be increased to 14 or 24 hours per day/ 7 days per week at a cost of ~$2 to ~$3 per month per household.
patrol committee work activities
Since completion of the survey, the committee has reviewed a variety of data sources regarding patrol services activities and performance. These included annual budgets (2005-2010), daily patrol reports ( July-December 2009), vandalism and graffiti incidents and cost summaries (2006-2009), patrol duties as defined in the March 2009 Patrol Post Orders, and GPS patrolling patterns (2009 and 2010).
The reviews of above information makes clear the patrol services currently provide covenant enforcement duties (parking violations in the midnight to 4 am period), safety and private property protection (patrolling private parks, Starpointe Residents Center, Star Tower, etc.) and limited support of private property maintenance activities (turning lights off in community parks, locking restrooms, monitor the operations of gates, etc). Patrol services shift hours of six hours per day, seven days per week, limits patrolling within the neighborhoods to less than two hours per day.
With the above in mind, the committee developed a revised list of patrol services “duties” deemed beneficial to the community. Any duties identified as the responsibility of the Police Department were eliminated from the list. The revised list is now being used to assess the future role of patrol services in the community.
After identifying necessary patrol service “duties”, the committee identi-fied a variety of options potentially meeting the communities’ needs in the future. A number of the initial options were discarded by the committee as being unworkable. Examples include the option of eliminating patrol services in their entirety, or evolving a capability to perform required “duties” using resident volunteers.
The committee is currently evaluating four options using the criteria of to what degree the option satisfies the “duties” required, and at what cost to the community. In addition, the committee has been asked to investigate a series of recommendations from the Voting Member Committee Parks/Security Sub-Committee. These recommendations include changing the park hours of operation (closure 10 pm to 6 am as are City of Goodyear parks), changing park signage to reinforce they are “Private – For Use of Residents and Guests Only”), installing security cameras in high vandalism locations, and providing resident vehicle permits to all residents. The committee expects to integrate one or more of the Parks/Security Sub-Committee recommendations into the final patrol services recommendation to the HOA Board.
changing residents’ expectations
Residents must recognize that “Community Patrol” is intended to sup-port the HOA’s enforcement of the Community Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions (CC&R) and that the Goodyear Police Department provides the “Security Patrol” for Estrella. Clearly, patrol is not a substitute for the Police Department in addressing activities of a criminal nature.
More specifically, Community Patrol has evolved as an official set of eyes in overseeing community property, responding to resident calls regarding non-criminal activities, are an authority for enforcing CC&Rs, and perform-ing a variety of property maintenance functions.
The committee welcomes further input from all the residents. Their final recommendations for Board action will be presented at the May 27, 2010 Board meeting. If you wish to comment, please contact Dennis Brungardt at [email protected] or Freeda Seltzer at [email protected].

let’s move! tips for Parents
A new national campaign – Let’s Move - was recently initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama to encourage children and their families to maintain healthy lifestyles. To keep the momentum in full gear, The Little Gym of Litchfield Park is helping families keep overall healthy living and exercise part of their daily routine.
Julie Dobbs of The Little Gym of Litchfield Park recommends that parents consider the following activities for their children. These activities help to maintain an active lifestyle and provide a range of other long-term benefits.
gymnastics
• Advances physical strength, flexibility and coordination
• Improves confidence and expressive skills in social settings
• Increases problem-solving and decision-making abilities
karate
• Helps develop self control and focus
• Builds flexibility, balance and core strength in the upper and lower body, and helps to build quicker reflexes and reaction skills
• Helps children keep attention and sustained concentration
sports
• Encourages your child to be a team player and promotes sportsmanship
• Prepares children for a lifetime of positive sports experiences and improves cognitive understanding of the rules and strategies for team sports
• Teaches strength, coordination and teamwork while building confidence
“It’s important to instill the notion of healthy living during the early stages of life,” said Dobbs. “The launch of the ‘Let’s Move’ campaign is a great way to remind local parents that being physically active and healthy can be fun for their children.”
According to the American Heart Association, an active lifestyle pro-motes overall physical, psychological and social benefits. It controls weight, reduces blood pressure, reduces the risk of diabetes and some cancers, while also building self-confidence and higher self-esteem.
“The best way to motivate children to live a healthy lifestyle is to make sure they’re having fun,” Dobbs said. “We encourage parents to find out what activities interest their children. The more fun they have, the more they will want to stay active!”
The Little Gym of Litchfield Park introduces children to physical activ-ity through a gymnastics-based non-competitive curriculum. Progressive programs such as gymnastics, dance, sports skills, and karate promote coordination, balance, rhythm and flexibility. The local gym is based on a philosophy that allows children to experience success in a fun, caring and non-competitive way, Dobbs said. Children’s listening, social and cognitive capacities are all enhanced in the process, as students are encouraged to progress at their own pace.
For more information about The Little Gym of Litchfield Park, please contact Julie Dobbs at 623-535-5222.
how to buy a ceiling fan
Spring has sprung! The plants are blossoming, the birds are chirping, and the temperatures are rising…yikes! Don’t panic. Now’s the perfect time to install that ceiling fan to cool you off without costing you a for-tune. You may ask yourself, “How do I know which one to buy? There are so many choices!” No fear, Handyman Xtreme is here with a few helpful tips.
ROOM SIZE – the size of the room will help you determine the appro-priate length of the fan blades the room can accommodate.
CEILING HEIGHT – for taller ceilings you will need to install a down rod extension to allow the fan to produce the proper distribution of air movement.
FAN REMOTE – just like the evolution of the TV, many ceiling fans now come with their own remote! Also, any existing ceiling fan can be wired with a remote, if you’re handy with electrical things.
STYLE – keep in mind the décor, color and overall feeling you want the room to convey. Choosing a complimentary ceiling fan will add those finishing touches.
So, open your windows, smell the blossoms and crank up your (new) ceiling fans - spring is here. If you’d like assistance installing that new ceiling fan or updating your existing one with a remote, give Handyman Xtreme a call at 602-773-1973.

hospice Of the valley Offers wide array Of services for seriously ill
Hospice of the Valley offers many services that go beyond end-of-life care, including programs for people with serious and chronic diseases as well as a placement service to help the living environment for their loved ones. There is no out-of-pocket cost for these services and programs. The Senior Placement Service helps families and health care professionals sort through the options for senior care -- home health-care companies, group homes, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities – and find appropriate care for their loved ones at no cost to the family or to the com-panies or facilities to which referrals are made. It acts as a neutral third-party to help meet the medical and social needs of all seniors, regardless of whether they are Hospice of the Valley patients. Other programs include:
The Pulmonary Resource Program is designed for patients with advanced pulmonary disease and their families and caregivers. The program offers strategies and interventions for symptom management; education on lung disease; medication, oxygen therapy, breathing techniques, cough tech-niques, and support to patients and families coping with lung disease.
The Congestive Heart Failure program provides care in patients’ homes or wherever they reside. Social workers and nurses are available to make home visits, guided by the patient’s physician. Participants need not be hospice patients; a community program called Outreach cares for people with chronic CHF. The hospice program cares for cardiac patients at later stages.
submitted by lee ann Black, estrella resident and member of white tanks rotary club
The Dementia program serves persons with dementia and their families, as well as educating the community, caregivers and physicians about all aspects of advanced dementia care.
Outreach offers seriously ill people who aren’t on hospice the services of a professional case coordinator to act as an advocate, provide education, and make connections to community resources.
Founded in 1977, Hospice of the Valley is one of the country’s oldest and largest not-for-profit hospices, nationally known for the staff ’s expertise. A care team of a doctor, nurse, nurse’s aide, social worker, chaplain (if requested) and volunteer support patients with life-limiting illnesses and families in their home or wherever they live. Care is available 24/7, with a nurse answering calls at night and weekends – not an answering service. Services are covered by Medicare and most insurance companies at no out-of-pocket cost to the patient. Donated funds pay for the Placement Service and Outreach. Seventeen palliative care units provide inpatient care Valley-wide, including Palm Valley in Goodyear, North Sun City in Sun City, Sun City in Peoria, Surprise in Surprise and Thunderbird in Glendale. For more information, call 602-530-6900, view the web site www.hov.org or email [email protected].

Why are Resident Cards
so Important?have you ever wondered
why you have to scan your card at starpointe? first, your card identifies you as a resident of estrella. the staff will check to see if your membership is active. next, we track the usage of the club ameni-ties including quench café. we want to know if we have enough staff at any given time to provide you with the best possible service. we can also determine if club hours should be adjusted due to usage.
Our busy waterpark season is here and the lines can get long. if everyone has their cards in hand, the process can be faster to get you on your way to cooling off under the Big Dipper. as always, remember your cards and your sunscreen. we hope to see you soon!
Has your Lease Expired?many of you may not know that your lease
agreement is attached to your estrella member-ship card. most contracts expire after 1 or 2 years. if you have a new lease and need to update your membership card, please stop by the community services Office or email tammy campbell at [email protected]. the community services Office hours are monday through friday from 8 am to 5 pm. starting saturday, may 1, we will be reopening on saturdays from 8 am to 3 pm during the waterpark season. this is to ensure you and your family has no interruption in the use of the amenities here at estrella.
Everything Poolswhile the warm arizona weather is fast
approaching, pool season is right around the cor-ner. Just a friendly reminder from your compliance team:
pool and spa decks must be setback a mini-mum of five (5) feet from the adjacent property line fence or wall to provide an adequate land-scape planting area between the deck and adja-cent fence or wall.
should a pool filter system require backwash-ing, an onsite backwash pit for the proposed pool must be installed. Backwashing onto streets, com-mon tracts or easements is not permitted.
green pools? call maricopa county at 602-506-6616. green pools can breed mosquitoes and can raise other concerns for neighboring proper-ties. if you live next to a property that has a pool that is turning green or is currently green, please contact the maricopa county Offices, or file an online complaint at www.maricopa.gov/envsvc/. if you are not sure if you should report the concern to the county, please contact your community services offices at 623-386-1112 and we will assist you in the process.
Community Services Office Hoursthe community services Office reopens for
the waterpark season. starting on saturday, may 1, the office will be open from 8 am to 3 pm. stop by to see us for all your membership needs.

hOa bulletin boardPool Schedule
after planting a young tree, it must be nurtured to maturity. Often, we think nature will take care of new trees for us, when in fact; trees planted in a residential setting need special attention through the first few years.
During the First YearDuring the first year of growth, leave as many limbs on the tree
for as long as possible, including those growing up and down the trunk. keeping extra limbs provides the maximum amount of leaf surface to manufacture food. this enables the trunk of a young tree to grow stronger more rapidly. some pruning may be required dur-ing the first year. this includes removing dead or broken branches, a competing leader, branches touching the ground or any sprouts (also known as suckers) growing directly out of the base of the trunk. ideally, you should avoid pruning in the first year unless absolutely necessary since trees are best left un-pruned until after their first year of growth.
Second and Third YearDuring the second and third years of growth, trees still require
minimal pruning. they need the maximum amount of leaf surface to produce energy. there are specific things to focus on when pruning a tree during this growth period. make sure large limbs are not rub-bing together or resting on each other as rubbing branches can result in open wounds that may lead to disease. remove only the bottom branches roughly to knee height. You can also start to thin the canopy by taking out a few branches here and there so your tree will be able to better withstand the monsoon winds. remember, it is important to prune cautiously, as it takes years for a tree to develop strong trunk
and branch structure. Over-pruning during the second and third years can stunt growth, so prune cautiously!
You can also remove tree stakes and wires during this growth period. grab the trunk of the tree and give it a good shake. if the ground around the base of the tree does not move, it is safe to remove the stakes.
Beyond the Third YearBeyond the third year of growth, we recommend consulting a
professional arborist to plan a proper pruning schedule. trees that are maintained properly from an early age increase in value over time. find a certified arborist in your area by visiting http://isa-arbor.com/findarborist/verifyarbByloc.aspx.
Watering Young Treesproper watering is another critical component of tree care. Over-
watering your young tree can be detrimental to its health and even kill it by causing root rot. supplying your young tree with the right amount of water depends, in part, on the type of tree. Desert-adapted trees, such as ironwood and palo verde species, need less water than non-native trees, like the evergreen elm and live Oak; nonetheless, all young trees need to be closely monitored. You can check the soil moisture around the base of your tree with a screwdriver. insert it in the soil. if the screwdriver goes in soil easily to a minimum depth of 6 inches, there is enough moisture. if it is difficult to push the screwdriver into the soil, you may need to increase the duration or frequency of watering.

whO are the
people in your neighborhood
Tara Shermerhorn is just beginning to see the dust settle, as she begins to feel a bit more comfy in her new position as Lifestyle Coordinator for Capital Consultants Management Corporation here in Estrella. With sum-mer just around the corner, she’s anticipating a busy pool season, her first since she joined the team here in Estrella. Tara’s goal for the upcoming summer season is to keep residents busy and out of the heat.
Tara is originally from Ontario, Canada and grew up in her family home with six children and just one bathroom! She chuckles at the system she and her three sisters maintained to keep their childhood home running smoothly. “It was in and out of the shower, and then off to the make-shift vanities in our bedrooms for make-up and hair sessions,” recalls Tara, offer-ing her huge warm smile, which Estrella residents are quickly growing to love. Tara’s graceful stature and friendly smile are excellent assets, enhancing her new position with our community, to make sure the residents are happily entertained with a variety of events to enjoy.
Tara is excited about several of the newest social activities she has brought to the community table. One of those activities is Trivia night, which takes place in the gallery rooms at the Starpointe Residents Club. The inaugural session included six teams who answered three rounds of carefully designed questions in a variety of categories, ranging from his-tory to entertainment and sports. First prize winners walked away with a $40 gift card to Papa Johns Pizza. Without a doubt, there is a huge request to continue Trivia night on a monthly basis. Tara is currently working on bringing B-I-N-G-O back, as a social activity, incorporating a potluck into the prize-driven social activity.
The Lifestyle Coordinator is especially encouraged by the pride that residents of Estrella incorporate into being a part of special events. She has recently been working closely with the Social Committee and is delighted by the sense of “ownership” that residents in this community seem to feel. “They really enjoy being a part of the success of what is going on in the community,” states Shermerhorn. Tara is happy to help residents build a community in which residents and team members of Capital Consultants Management Corporation can be proud. Some of the greatest rewards come when residents request repeats on events or comment positively on their personal experiences as a result of Tara’s activity planning.
Estrella’s Lifestyle Coordinator is no stranger to making people happy. She previously worked for a non-profit organization that worked to give back to charitable foundations, before joining the Estrella team. In her free time, Tara enjoys dining with girlfriends and attending sporting events. Her golf clubs and tennis racket have a permanent place in the back seat of her
car because she intends to eventually master each of the two sports. She stays extremely busy with extended family birthdays and events that she can participate in with her numerous relatives that live in the West Valley.
Before a workout or trip to the Café Quench, stop by and say hello to Tara Shermerhorn in the Community Center. She is here to help the residents of Estrella live the fascinating lifestyle that this exceptional com-munity affords us!

Farmer’s Market Zucchini, Eggplant & Squash – Oh My!The abundance of zucchini and eggplant at the farmer’s markets in May are
key to budget-friendly menu items for every course; including dessert. About a year ago, a friend here in Estrella turned me on to Tonopah Rob’s farmer’s mar-ket. It instantly became my favorite farmer’s market in the Southwest Valley, but it was a bit of a drive to Tonopah. Rob now brings is fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and more to Goodyear every week. Tonopah Rob sets up under tents at the Ace Hardware store on Estrella Parkway every Sunday from 8 am – 1 pm. If you get on their mailing list, you’ll get an email each week that lists the items that will be available for sale. Check out http://tonopahrob.com

Hand Crafting at HomeBY stephanie garrisOn
cOmmunitY lifestYle: hOuse & hOme
With the economy shifting and certain stores closing, many shopping and entertainment habits are changing, and a trend of home-grown
(literally) creativity is on the rise. The top ten crafts - in order of most sales on down- are scrapbooking/memory crafts; home décor painting, acces-sorizing and finishing; woodworking; cake decorating; art and drawing; jewelry making; floral arranging; card making; quilting and finally, crochet-ing. Crafting takes place in over 51% of U.S. households, which means one in every two families has somebody crafty amongst them.
The Craft & Hobby Association of America encourages consumers to consider home crafting and lists numerous emotional, physical and other inherent benefits. They’ve observantly tapped into the desires that many families have these days – the need to relax, initiate a healthier lifestyle, fos-ter a sense of accomplishment, spend quality time with others and use their money more effectively.
Personally, I have been a crafter since childhood, starting (like most people do) as a crayon-scribbling toddler. While still a youngster I moved into sewing, then as a teen added on scrapbooking and mixed media pursuits before focusing on family and career for the next decade. A few years ago, I got back into crafting in a big way when I became pregnant with my daugh-ter. Pulling out my old sewing machines and craft tools, I sewed a canopy that hung over her crib, created elegant mixed-media artwork to grace the walls, and relied on my expanding crafting skills to design a chic custom nursery. Now that she’s a bigger girl, my daughter’s room is constantly evolv-ing as a lab for my latest creative experiments. Already she is involved with my art projects, sitting by my side while I work, just as I did at her age with my own mother long ago.
There are many ways that you can easily invite more creativity into your family’s lifestyle. Consider crafting as a way to make thoughtful presents for friends and family; hobbyists do this to save money and give useful gifts that come straight from the heart. More and more, I’m seeing an arts and crafts component at children’s birthday and holiday parties. Whether it’s painting, cupcake decorating or playing with foam shapes, parents are offering this up as a fun element to the festivities that allows each guest to take part at their own pace. Crafting is also a fabulous way to supplement a wardrobe and enhance your personal style – many bags, hats and jewelry pieces are easier to make than you would think.
Some beginners avoid starting a new hobby because they worry about outlaying a ton of cash, only to quickly lose interest. There are ways to avoid this pitfall. First, recognize that frustration, which usually leads to abandonment, often comes from not understanding or getting enough practice to learn basic techniques. When considering a new hobby, research it online. Some require few tools (you can start to crochet with only one needle and one skein of yarn), while other pastimes, like painting, require more supplies. Many material manufacturers have excellent web resources on how to use their wares – everything from yarns to paints to beads and beyond. Watch tutorials, read project patterns, and take out a few books from the library before you invest a dime. There’s a lot you can learn for free, including which crafts best suit your temperament. Then take a few classes, whether at your local recreation center, college or a retail store; this is a low-commitment way to test the waters. Finally, consider teaming up with a family member or a friend; nothing makes learning more fun or more likely to be successful than having someone else to share the experience with you.
There is a huge opportunity to be had by allowing creativity into your life in a more meaningful way. When I let my creativity express itself after years of being in stasis, great things started to happen. I met new friends that, because we shared the same inclinations, seemed like long-lost bud-dies, learned new techniques, fashioned a better environment for my fam-ily, and became truer to myself than had been possible for years. It’s also allowed me flexibility in my career, which has been another unexpected bonus. So take the time to explore your own untapped artistic potential; it may be the beginning of a better, more enriching phase of your life.

It appears that April showers have brought much more than just May flowers to our yards and common areas this spring. We’ve got weeds and lots of them! Barbara Gile, Owner of West Side Weed Control, is available to help. The West Side Weed Control Owner has an excellent reputation of keep-ing her customers informed. She takes great pride in her business’ success which is due in part to the informative follow-up procedures that she assigns each customer after weeding treatments. Most important are the follow-up watering steps that should be taken to eliminate the need for retreat-ment for one full year.
Barbara describes the process of dissolving our continual weed infestation, as follows: “West Side Weed Control is a company that specializes in weed control. With all of the recent rains in Arizona and the warm weather coming on, all of the weeds are opening and growing. West Side Weed Control recommends a pre-emergent application. This application is a liquid chemical that is applied with a pressure sprayer. Once the application is performed and the product is “watered in” the effect is a vapor barrier below the surface of the ground that prevents weed seeds from opening. This application has a warranty from the chemical manufacture
for 4 to 6 months, but generally lasts up to a year for 1/3 of an acre lot homes.”
West Side Weed Control would like to stop that back-breaking weekend weed patrol at your house. This application will prevent crops of weeds from growing in your yard and, by having an application at least once each year, will end the anxiety of weed crops at your home. Additionally, West Side Weed Control will perform a post-application that will kill green weeds that have come to the surface. This application will kill green weeds down to the root. Both applications will ensure that your yard is in shape for the weed season and beyond.
In Arizona, the cycle of weeds changes from season to season. The weeds that are currently growing will change with the seasons and continue
to grow without treatment. Because we do not have temperatures below freezing here in Arizona, we do not see the effect of weeds dying as they do in the upper states.
West Side Weed Control is a company based in the West Valley and has served these West Valley communities for several years. In addition to hom-eowners, they take care of commercial, municipal, and state properties. Give them a call today to schedule your treatment in Estrella at 602-743-8506.

Kitchell Development and Newland Communities are pleased to announce
that Safeway will anchor Mountain Ranch Marketplace at Estrella in a newly
constructed 49,343-square-foot building. Safeway plans to open its doors for
business this fall.
Located at the main entrance of Estrella, the 22-acre shopping center will
be the development’s first retail center. It will provide 165,000 square feet of
grocery, drug and retail space at full build out. The first phase will contain
approximately 109,000 square feet.
The Mountain Ranch Marketplace shopping center is a joint venture
between Kitchell Development and Newland Communities. In addition
to Safeway, a number of other retailers are locating in Mountain Ranch
Marketplace, including Mini-Skool, Chase Bank, Walgreens, Papa John’s
Pizza, Great Clips, Estrella Family Dentistry, Estrella Homes and Land, SW
Ambulance, Oasis Bagels and several others that are in various stages of lease
negotiation.
The shopping center is among Arizona’s first grocery/drugstore-anchored
neighborhood shopping centers that is being LEED certified (Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design), according to Rob Schramm, design and
construction manager for Kitchell. Among the many sustainable elements
incorporated into the design are high-efficiency HVAC units; low-flow water
fixtures and low-water-use landscaping; paints and adhesives with low levels
of volatile organic compounds (VOCs); stormwater quality control; highly
reflective roofing materials to reduce the urban-heat-island effect; and light-
pollution-reduction measures. In addition, the project incorporates wood
certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as coming from well-managed
forests. Eighty-seven percent of the construction debris was recycled.
“Newland has aggressively pursued commercial opportunities over the
past few years, and we are confident that Mountain Ranch Marketplace
will bring outstanding new retail amenities to the community of Estrella,”
said Greg Bielli, president of Newland Communities’ western region. “The
Kitchell/Newland venture is delivering on our commitment to provide needed
retail services to our residents and we look forward to the grand opening of
Safeway.”

All new CantaMia homes are green! Well not in color, but in design and
energy efficiency. The community is an Environments for Living® Certified
Green community, as well as an APS Energy Star with Solar Community. In
fact, each home comes equipped with an Echo™ solar
system. Echo™ is a complete solar solution that not
only generates electricity, but also provides hot water
and helps you heat and cool your home.
CantaMia, Estrella’s new active adult community,
plans for more than 1,700 homes. It embraces a
sustainable development philosophy with particular
attention to the energy efficiency of the homes. “Not
only do our homes come with a limited guarantee of
heating and cooling use, our homes are beautiful and
comfortable. It’s the perfect package. Doing something
good for the environment and our homeowners at the same time,” said Carl
Mulac, CEO of Joseph Carl Homes.
Applying the principles of building science, the Environments for Living®
Certified Green program regards a home as a “system of systems” that work
together. The process begins with a pre-construction review of the builder’s
plans, looking at such things as framing techniques and insulation systems
to ductwork and combustion safety issues, plus indoor water efficiency,
appliance efficiency and indoor environmental quality
– resulting in homes that are both budget friendly and
environmentally friendly.
“We believe that today’s consumers will find the
benefits of these homes very appealing and they will
appreciate that we are going the extra mile in terms of
energy efficiency and environmental responsibility,”
said Mulac.
CantaMia offers 14 beautiful model homes, priced
from the $140s. The sales center, located at 17700
West Star Point Dr., is open daily from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
CantaMia is located at the southern end of Estrella Parkway – look for the
