publications that build community
my hometown
Let’s face it, as the economy continues its downward spiral, latching itself onto our wallets, our jobs, our homes and our spending and saving power (elements that we “once upon a time” seemed to have a grip on), we might find it challenging to stop and think about what might inspire us.
For me, the bittersweet reality of the times has forced new inspirational methods of enjoying the simplicity of everyday living - the basics. Honestly, there’s a new fresh-ness in the flowers blooming in my backyard, because I’m actually taking the time to look at them. And planning an upcoming event isn’t involving vacation reservations, but simply a visit to catch up with friends. In these troubled times, are you finding small ways to get back to the basics of what is truly important in your life?
Luckily, Estrella continues to offer each of us rea-sons to be inspired. Maybe you had the opportunity to cheer on the Wolves as the Boys Varsity Basketball team grabbed their second consecutive State Championship at Jobing.com arena? Were you filled with a sense of pride as the Star Spangled Banner and more than 12,000 scream-
ing fans deafened the crowd? Or, maybe you happened to be inspired by Pastor Mike’s three words of wisdom, inviting us to choose a path of pain, panic or promise during trouble times, at a recent Sunday service at Estrella Mountain Church?
There’s something new inspiring us at My Hometown Estrella, too. We’re bringing a fresh, new style to the publication - we hope you’ll love it! This issue is blooming with inspiration. You’ll find ways to relax and enjoy our community, featuring a reminder of amenities at the Golf Club of Estrella, ranging from golf clinics to a relaxing evening on the patio. Our cover story features a remarkable young lady, who dances into the hearts of her parents, fulfilling a life-long dream of the art of dance. And A.C.T.I.O.N. is inspiring us to “Get Moving” in an attempt to promote great health.
As we enter into the freshest season of the year, spring, I’d love to know just what it is that inspires you? Drop me a line with your interesting story ideas at [email protected].

Every parent is proud of their child and seeing our children succeed brings an elated happiness to the sometimes challenging role of parenthood. Estrella residents, Les and Cheryl Swafford, are beaming with pride over their daughter and her accomplishments aca-demically and as a member of the High School Spirit Line. “It’s all just flying by so quickly, I felt it was time to share our appreciation for her remarkable accomplishments,” said Les.
Tayte is a 15 year old sophomore at Estrella Foothills High School. She’s an honor student who has also been involved with dance since she was a toddler. Her love of dancing, along with her fellow Spirit Line dancers, has earned her high school a 1st place title in Regional competition, followed by two consecutive 2nd place awards for Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Championship competitions, the most recent held at the Coliseum in Phoenix in March.
It all began at the tender age of three as Tayte “danced her heart out” with Desert West Dance Academy. She has performed at Disneyland, California Adventures and at numerous public activities on the west side of the Valley while growing up. Most recently, Desert West Academy was the opening act for the Fiesta Bowl Parade in January. The high school sophomore continues to dance with the organization, even after a long day of school studies and Spirit Line dance practice at EFHS. “It’s straight from practice at school over to Desert West Dance Academy until 7:30 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday each week,” says Tayte’s mom, Cheryl.
She does all of this and still manages to main-tain good grades. Tayte’s father, Les, remem-bers when his young daughter first entered high school as a freshman and wanted to take on the additional commitment of the school’s dance team. “I was frightened by the regimen of the commitment,” he remembers. “It was going to be a 365 day commitment. The Spirit Line would be representing all of the school’s boys and girls activities including football and boys and girls basketball at all levels. There were requirements for maintaining grades and citizenship requirements, too,” Les recalls. Tayte
has surpassed the expectations and requirements and was voted “Best Dancer” as a freshman, finishing 4th overall in the AIA State Championship competition last year.
Tayte is currently preparing for tryouts for next year’s Spirit Line taking place at EFHS this month. Another reason for her continued interest, she enjoys the friendships and closeness she feels with each of the members of the squad. She is saddened by the fact that five seniors will be lost to gradu-ation and encourages anyone who wants to become part of a dedicated team to come out for tryouts. Tayte would love to continue dancing after high school and is considering trying out for the University of Arizona dance team for her college years. She hopes to teach dance at a studio to students in the future.
Best wishes Tayte on your future in the art of dance and congratulations for making your parents so proud!

Pet Guidelines in estrella
As many residents begin to open doors and windows this spring and walk with our pets among the sidewalks throughout the community, resi-dents also become much more aware of the nuisance of unattended, barking dogs. The Community Association has issued the following reminder of ordinances in effect throughout our community:
Unless otherwise approved by the DRC, no more than a total of three (3) pets (dogs, cats or other usual and common household pets) may be per-mitted in a residence; however, those pets which are permitted to roam free, or, in the sole discretion of the Board, make objectionable noise, endanger the health or safety of, or constitute a nuisance or inconvenience to other residents shall be removed upon request of the Board. If the pet owner fails to honor such request, the Board may remove the pet. No structure for the care, housing or confinement of any permitted pet shall be visible from adjacent property. Dogs shall be kept on a leash or otherwise confined in a manner acceptable to the Board whenever outside a residence. Persons walking pets shall carry a handheld shovel or other instrument designed for removing animal waste from the ground with them at all times and shall remove the pet’s waste from the community. Pets shall be registered,
licensed and inoculated as required by law. Pets are not per-mitted in common area playground areas nor on common
area playground equipment. Raising, breeding or keeping of animals, livestock,
or poultry of any kind is prohibited. Please remove pet waste from sidewalk, com-
mon areas and private yards as you stroll through the communities or along the paths of the lakes and com-mon areas. The small amount of extra effort spreads
a wealth of “I care about this community” throughout Estrella.

The Golf Club of Estrella (Celebrating 10 years)
The Golf Club of Estrella recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary on February 13, 2009. General Manager, Tom Cortabitarte, would like to invite you to visit the beautiful Troon Golf Course and its amenities, recognized by Golfweek magazine as one of “America’s Best Courses” and ranked number 7 in the state of Arizona. This spectacular desert golf course, of Nicklaus design, is nestled in the Sierra-Estrella Mountains and features 18 holes of chal-lenging play in the midst of breathtaking beauty.
Tom came to the Golf Club of Estrella last May with over 30 years experience in Hotel and Restaurant Management, followed by Golf Club Management with Troon. He’s lived in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Kansas City and Palm Springs, settling in his favorite state, Arizona. He enjoys spending time with his newest family mem-bers, a twin grandson and granddaughter; Jackson and Miranda, his son and his parents, who are also West Valley residents. For inquiries, Tom can be reached at [email protected].
For our newer Estrella residents and as a refresher for all of our neighbors, the Club is open to the public and offers significant discounts to resi-dents. The clubhouse facilities include The Player’s Grill, offering food & beverage service from sunrise to sunset, seven days per week. The Club is also a preferred location for wedding ceremonies and receptions in the West Valley.
For players of all ability levels and for those just thinking about taking up a game that can be played for a lifetime, the Golf Club of Estrella is the perfect destination. They offer special resident promotions from annual pass access to daily specials found on the Life in Estrella website or simply by calling the course directly. The Club holds weekly golf clinics for juniors and adults and offers individu-ally designed lesson plans. If you don’t have clubs, it’s not a problem because the Club features Callaway rental sets -- eliminating an excuse not to immediately hit the links.
The Golf Club of Estrella hosts several local charity golf events. Many of these groups have roots within the community of Estrella, like the recent Estrella Youth Sports outing held at the Golf Club of Estrella.
If sipping your favorite cocktail while taking in the stunning views of our famous Arizona sunsets sounds entic-ing, the Club invites you to spend an evening on the Player’s Grill patio. The patio, drenched in lighted trees and surrounding fire pits, is the perfect ending to a great day of golf or a sanctuary to share good times with family and friends. The menu features “munchies” including buffalo wings, assorted salads, wraps, famous homemade chips and the traditional burger. Pairing a tasty entrée with a beverage from its list of imported and domestic beers or a wide selection of wines, reminds you that you’re definitely in the right place. Happy hour is scheduled from 5 to 8 pm and features food and beverage specials along with live music.
You’ll be pleased to learn that the Club offers a wonderful wedding package. The package includes a site for exchanging vows on the Ceremony Lawn, as well as a reception area on the Player’s Patio featuring stunning views of the setting Sonoran sun. Janet Rung, Director of Food & Beverage, advises that one of the benefits of hosting a wed-ding at the Club is the option of a personal caterer. Anyone booking a wedding in 2009 at the Golf Club of Estrella will receive a choice of Brighton-themed giveaways, along with a complimentary champagne toast or wedding cake for up to 100 guests.
The Golf Shop is the ideal place for those who just can’t pass up a unique shopping experience. You will find today’s leading labels in men’s and women’s golf apparel, including Greg Norman, Nike, Adidas, Tehama, Sport Haley, Tail and Jamie Sadock. The shop features Brighton jewelry, FootJoy shoes, Wooggee headwear, as well as Callaway and Titleist clubs. If you’re looking for a particular item, Kristie Carlson-Wolfe, the Club’s Merchandise Manager, can place a special order for you. With Callaway leading the way in golf club technology, the Golf Club of Estrella provides an in-house fitting system to customize clubs that will cut strokes off your game.
Be sure to stop by and browse the Golf Shop or say hello to General Manager, Tom Cortabitarte. Tom will make sure your experience with Troon Golf is a pleasant experience. He’ll introduce you to that specialized team member that will assist you with a tee time, help schedule a special event, or point you toward a place to relax in the Player’s Grill. To learn more about the Golf Club of Estrella, visit www.lifeinestrella.com or call 623-386-2600.
spring Brings New life to estrella submitted by estrella resident, laura alcorta
sonoran ridge resident, laura alcorta, shares a rare glimpse of a mother hummingbird in her nest. laura had been monitoring the nest for approximately a week and noted that the nest was first home to the mother humming-bird, followed by two baby hum-mingbirds that suddenly took up residency. the sonoran ridge resident researched information about incubation of the eggs, which ordinarily lasts for approxi-mately 14 to 16 days, usually
two in number, followed by the hatching process. according to her source, rubythroat.org, the chicks double in mass by the third day and then double again in size by day 5 and 8. the chicks then start producing noticeable pin-feathers and remain in the nest for about three weeks. Parents, if you think your children grow up too fast, just be happy you’re not a hummingbird!
Hummingbirds have an approxi-mate lifespan of 3-4 years. the nests are preyed upon by larg-er birds, snakes and mammals, while adult hummers are prey for cats, small hawks, owls and road-runners. some shrubs that are attractive to hummingbirds are azalea, Butterfly Bush (Buddleia), Cape Honeysuckle and lantana.

spring Cleaning in your Medicine Cabinetsubmitted by Banner estrella Health
Yes, it’s that time again—spring (cleaning)! This year, when tidying up your home, don’t forget to check your medicine cabinet, as there are several dangers associated with keeping unneeded medication around, said Dr. Frank LoVecchio, a medical toxicologist with Banner Poison Control Center. “Children and animals may get into unused medication, they could be expired, or you might confuse them with currently used medication which
could lead to poisoning.”Dr. LoVecchio suggests cleaning out
your medicine cabinets once a year to throw away your old prescription medi-cations and over-the-counter remedies that have expired. But, how to get rid of
them? Should you throw the medication in the trash? Is it best to flush it in the toilet or rinse it down the sink? Unfortunately, these methods of disposal are not safe in all cases, and could be harmful for the environment, wildlife and waterways.
The best way to get rid of unused or expired medication is to bring them to a “take-back” program, Dr. LoVecchio said. Ask your pharmacy if it will accept unused medicine for proper disposal. Costco members can bring unwanted medications to a Costco pharmacy. You can also try searching earth911.com for programs in your neighborhood.
If the above options don’t work, then another alternative would be to safely dispose of the medication yourself. You should first refer to the printed material that accompanies your medication for specific instructions. If none are provided, be sure to remove all personal information from the bottle to avoid identity theft, and follow the disposal instructions below.
Experts suggest making medicines unusable before trashing so they don’t end up in the wrong hands. Some ideas? Crush pills or dissolve capsules in water. Mix in with kitty litter, coffee grounds or other unappealing kitchen waste. Add salt, ashes from your fireplace, dirt, charcoal or spices to liquids. Put the medication in a plastic container, not glass, duct tape the lid and place it in a sealed bag before tossing it in the trash. To avoid mistreatment once it has been disposed, it’s best to put the sealed bag in a brown paper sack so that the medicine is more difficult to identify. For more information, call the 24-hour hotline at 1-800-222-1222, or visit www.BannerHealth.com, keyword: Banner Poison. You can also visit www.fda.gov for informa-tion on federal regulations of medication disposal.
eFHs Girls soccer takes Home state Championship title!
A shiny new piece of hardware stands proudly in the EFHS gymnasium’s trophy case. It belongs to the 3A Girls Soccer State Champions, two-year head coach Joseph Rhoades and his assistant, Matt Lees.
After grabbing the State Title with ease on February 14 with a 7-0 vic-tory over Northwest Christian, the soccer squad celebrated with a traditional high school method of sharing joy -- a “dog pile” on the championship field. Complete elation and satisfaction emitted from the players, coaches and sideline fan club that day. It was the ‘sigh of relief ’ celebration that Coach Rhoades had anticipated since the beginning of the season. The team continually earned post-game celebrations with each victory during their undefeated regular seasonal play. “I told you, ‘You play this way and no one will touch you,’” recalls Rhoades conversations with his players duringpre-seasonal practices. Time and time again, the girls exceeded the stan-dards to rack up a 19-0 season record, oppressing two 4A teams, Aqua Fria and Sunnyslope in tournament matches -- icing on their perpetual seasonal cake.
The State title couldn’t have happened without goals knocked in by Casey Grant and Maurissa Jones. Janie Simpson should also be commended for assisting in the win. “She doesn’t score a lot of goals, but she does a lot of substantial things that help the team win,” says Rhoades. “She’s our team’s play-maker.”
The ladies soccer team had just one obstacle of fear to overcome during the season. That was the match with the gals from Fountain Hills. The Falcons beat the Wolves last year, knocking EFHS out during State competition, ending their season. “When we beat them this year in the playoffs, it clenched our mind set on what we could accomplish,” said Coach Rhoades.
This year’s State Championship title sets the bar “very high” for the next season, says Coach Rhoades. He revealed that he holds some intense pre-season practice sessions which include a great deal of running. Open field training will continue this summer in preparation for training another squad to becoming state champions. Players to look out for next season include returners Kelsey Roberts, who led the team in scoring 47 goals; Maurissa Jones, with an impressive 27 goals, and defender, Gabby Wingfield, who is the heart of the Wolves’ defense. Expectations are high for the Wolves. As Coach Rhoades puts it, “We’re excellent, because we play tough.”

Women’s Self-Defense Workshop
aPr 21 “Don’t let an unexpect-ed situation ruin your life… because
you weren’t prepared.” On April 21, 2009, Self-Defense Expert, Cathy Gregg, is teaching women self-defense through a training course here in Estrella. The interac-tive course is from 5-8 pm at the Starpointe Residents Club. This Caution Unlimited session covers a variety of self defense techniques including awareness, basic self-defense, home invasion protection and taser target shooting. The cost of the course is $99 per person, but there is a 20% discount for groups of three or more.
Cathy’s self-defense work covers many years, includ-ing 12 years as a self-defense instructor. She has earned three black belts during her career. This single mother’s interest for self-defense instruction was sparked by a personal incident with a male intruder in a ladies room within a shopping mall. Cathy remembers the scenario of the hallway with a ladies’ room, a men’s room and an exit door, an unsafe set up for unprepared potential victims. Sign up today at www.cautionunlimited.com or call 480-634-1502 for a group discount to learn the essentials of safety.

Spring Turf Transition
When nighttime temperatures start to creep up into the 60s, the Bermuda grass wakes up from winter dormancy and begins to grow. as daytime temperatures exceed 90 degrees and soil temperatures warm into the 80s, the winter ryegrass begins to recede. DlC resources, Inc. wants you to know that during this transition period, both types of grass compete for space, nutrients and water.
subtle changes occur in turf areas throughout the transition period. Irrigation technicians monitor watering times in the common areas to encourage Bermuda grass growth. For this process, less water is used, not more. to suppress the ryegrass growth, we gradually lower mower heights from 2 inches down to 1-1.25 inches.
as ryegrass dies off, turf may appear off color or yellow and there may even be some areas that appear dry. this is a temporary condi-tion that improves as the Bermuda grass fills in. sometimes when the ryegrass dies, it forms a thick mat which is easily removed with a verticutting machine. Once Bermuda grass is actively growing, usually by the first of May, ammonium sulfate fertilizer (21-0-0) is applied to enhance color and growth and promote healthy turf.
transition will take place on a large scale in your common areas over several weeks and the same process can be applied to your yard. Gradually, lower the height of your lawn mower over the course of a few weeks and reduce the amount of water to approximately 6-8 minutes every 2 or 3 days. If you encounter some dead spots, use a hard rake to remove the matted ryegrass. apply ammonium sulfate fertilizer (21-0-0) at a rate of 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. of turf. By the 1st of June, your Bermuda grass will be ready for the summer months.

WHO are tHe
people in your neighborhood
Meet the family that is creative in commer-cial interior design, fashion design and masterful artwork pieces. Their professional innovations overflow right over into their personal lives with recent travel experiences, making Donna June, Jillian and David Stone, neighbors and friends that you’d like to meet.
While their daughter, Jillian, is off attending school at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in California, Donna and David arranged a recent getaway trip to Europe. The couple slipped out of the country, European style, to enjoy holiday sights and lights, among the mist of snowflakes in Versailles just outside Paris.
Europe has been on the couple’s wish list of locations to visit for quite some time, and what could be more exciting than a romantic holiday escape? After traveling throughout Arizona and back east to old Boston and New England’s familiar “stomping grounds,” they finally decided it was time to take that long awaited honeymoon trip out of the country to visit Paris and London - two cities they found unique and fascinating. They were pleas-antly surprised at the magnificence of scenery and hospitality in both Paris and London. Another surprise included finding out that “The French are NOT snotty,” remembers Donna. “They were ready to help non-French speaking visitors.” Both were delighted to experience fantastic food in London, much more than the greasy fish and chips that they expected. Traveling between Paris and London was a first-time pleasantry aboard the commuter system called “Eurostar.” David and Donna found this train to be a very comfortable and convenient way to travel from city to city. They found London so familiar as it combined the charm of Boston with the
“bigness” of New York. Both agreed that four days just wasn’t enough time to see everything. On their next visit, they hope to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace which takes place every other day in the winter (and not in the rain), and more excursions out into the country-side in warmer, sunnier months.
Donna and David share their home in the Fairways with three very important pets. Theo (short for Theodore), a six-year old tri-colored Cardigan Welsh corgi, Owen (short for “oh-when-are-we-going-to-get-another-dog”), Theo’s half brother, and Gracie, a sixteen year old Calico Maine barn bred feline, who is currently deciding
if hair is too much of a hassle for Arizona. The couple came to Estrella just over two years ago. They were drawn to the community by the mountain views and desert landscape. “A desirable contrast to the bland, sterile neigh-borhoods in the flat lands of the valley,” said David.
David’s work as a commercial designer affords him the opportunity to work on projects that include a Pediatric ICU at St. Joseph’s hospital and a “green” sustainable office building in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Donna, who also trained in interior design, is currently re-launching her business called “PaintedLine.com” which specializes in custom painted furniture, pottery, artwork and accessories for both home and business atmospheres. Visit her website to see some of her unique creations at www.paintedline.com.
When the June/Stone couple isn’t engaged in design projects or satisfy-ing artwork orders, they might be seen filling their yard with cacti and other native plants or lounging in their backyard pool while updating their travel itinerary for their next vacation.

Historic Stimulus Bill Strives to Spur Economy
The $787 billion package is remarkable not only in its scale and scope, but in the speed of its passage as well. The bill combines $282 billion
in tax relief with more than $500 billion in government spending. The resulting increase in the federal budget deficit is expected to equal about 2.5% of gross domestic product for two years in a row. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that the legislation will save or create 800,000 to 2.3 million jobs by the end of 2009, 1.2 million to 3.6 million jobs by the end of 2010, and 600,000 to 1.9 million jobs by the end of 2011. The stimulus package totals more than 1,000 pages. Here is a rundown of the most far-reaching programs.
Taming TaxesIndividual taxpayers with modified adjusted gross incomes (AGIs)
not exceeding $75,000 and married couples filing jointly with AGIs not exceeding $150,000 will receive tax credits of up to $400 and $800, respec-tively, for the 2009 and 2010 tax years. Only individuals with earned income qualify for the Making Work Pay tax credit; it isn’t available to single filers earning more than $95,000 and joint filers earning more than $190,000.
Other notable tax cuts and incentives include:
First-time homebuyer tax credit. First-time homebuyers of a principal residence (purchased after
December 31, 2008 through November 30, 2009) can receive a maximum $8,000 tax credit, which does not have to be repaid to the IRS as long as the home is not sold within 36 months of purchase. The credit phases out for single filers earning more than $75,000 and joint filers earning more than $150,000. Last year’s refundable first-time homebuyer credit (up to $7,500) was the equivalent of an interest-free loan equal to 10% of the purchase of a home; people who received that credit have to repay the money back to the government over 15 years in equal installments or when the home is sold.
A one-year patch for the alternative minimum tax (for the 2009 tax year). The 2009 AMT exemption amounts are $46,700 for single filers and
$70,950 for joint filers. This move will spare about 26 million middle-income taxpayers from a levy that was originally designed to prevent the wealthy from avoiding the federal income tax entirely.
An enhanced higher-education tax credit in 2009 and 2010. The law temporarily increases the former HOPE Scholarship credit
from $1,800 to $2,500 per year for single filers earning less than $80,000 and joint filers earning less than $160,000 (partial credits allowed for single filers earning $80,000 to $90,000 and joint filers earning $160,000 to $180,000) and gives the credit a new name: the American Opportunity Tax Credit. After 2010, the law reverts to the Hope credit unless the new credit is extended.
A sales tax deduction for a new vehicle purchased in 2009. Taxpayers can deduct state and local sales taxes and excise taxes paid
on the purchase of one new vehicle in 2009. The deduction phases out for single filers earning more than $125,000 and joint filers earning more than $250,000. The tax deduction cannot exceed the portion of tax applicable to the first $49,500 of the vehicle purchase price.
Extending a HandThe legislation includes measures to help the unemployed:
• Lengthens date to be eligible for extended unemployment benefits. A law passed last year (Emergency Unemployment Compensation) allowed workers who had exhausted the regular 26 weeks of state unemployment benefits to be eligible for up to 20 weeks of extended jobless benefits (or up to 33 weeks in states with “high unemployment”). This program for extended unemployment benefits, which was slated to expire on March 31, 2009, is now available through December 31, 2009.
• Temporary $25 increase in weekly unemployment benefits (through 2009).
• Temporary suspension of federal income taxes on up to $2,400 of unem-ployment benefits (for 2009 only). Amounts over $2,400 remain fully taxable.
• Subsidized COBRA benefits. Individuals who are involuntarily separated from employment after August 31, 2008 and before January 1, 2010, can elect to pay only 35% of their COBRA health insurance premiums, as if they were paying the full amount, for up to 9 months.
These are just a few of the programs. If you have any questions about the stimulus program or how the new programs may affect your financial situation, don’t hesitate to contact me at 623-412-9602.

Points-Friendly Soups and Sweets
Now that the first Weight Watchers community meeting series is in full swing up here in Estrella, many of those on the program are seeking
points-friendly recipes. The best dishes have high fiber content, which keeps the points low and makes that full feeling last longer. What could be better than soup?
I like soup. In fact, I could eat soup year-round, even here in the Sonoran Desert. Studies show that broth-based soups can curb your hunger for very few calories. Pureeing some ingredients can give broth-based soups
a creamy texture, without the added fat and calories of cream. The Spicy Black Bean soup below is creamy and satisfying, and only 3 points for 1-1/2 cups. The Zero-Point Asian Soup below is great for when you are craving something warm and comforting, but have no points left for the day.
For a sweet treat after dinner, try a 2-point chocolate muffin. They are super easy because they are made from cake mix and are loaded with vita-mins and fiber since there is pumpkin in the recipe. They are so good you’ll have to hide them from the kids!.
spicy Black Bean soup
servings: 8
Cooking spray, 1 spray
1 medium onion, finely
chopped
4 medium garlic cloves,
minced
3 (15 oz.) black beans, canned,
undrained
1/2 teaspoon(s) red pepper
flakes, or to taste
1 teaspoon(s) cumin powder
1 (14 1/2 oz.) can chicken broth,
fat free, or vegetable broth
1 (10 3/4 oz.) can diced
tomatoes, with green chiles,
such as Rotel
1 (12 oz.) can yellow corn,
drained
Coat bottom of large stockpot with
cooking spray. add onion and garlic;
cook, stirring frequently,until onions
are soft but not brown - about 5
minutes.
Place one can of beans
in blender; add sauteed
onion mixture, red pep-
per flakes, and cumin.
Cover and blend on high until
smooth, about 30 seconds. Pour
mixture back into stockpot.
***I just add the can of beans, red
pepper flakes, and cumin to the pot
with the onion mixture and blend
until smooth with an immersion
blender.***
add second can of beans and the
chicken broth to the stockpot and
puree with immersion blender until
smooth.
stir third can of beans (DO NOt
Puree FIrst), tomatoes and green
chilies, and corn into stockpot. Bring
to a boil, lower heat to medium and
simmer for 20-25 minutes.
yields about 1-1/2 cups of soup
per serving.
Oriental soup
servings: 8
3 cans FF chicken broth (14.5 oz
cans)
1 package frozen Oriental-style
stir fry veggies (about 1 pound)
1 can (small flat can) Bamboo
shoots
1 cup sliced mushrooms
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons fish sauce (or add
another tablespoon soy)
1/4 cup rice wine vinegar
1 tablespoon garlic chili paste
(or to taste) juice of 1 large
lemon
Bring chicken broth to a boil, add
veggies and turn off heat
add remaining ingredients and
stir to blend.
you can adjust the seasonings to
taste, adding more or less soy, vin-
egar, etc. til you get the flavor and
“heat” you want.
Chocolate Pumpkin
Muffins
makes 24
1 box Devil’s Food cake mix
1 (15oz) can of pumpkin
1 cup of water
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
either place paper cupcake liners
into muffin tins or spray them with
cooking spray.
Blend together all three ingredients,
using either a whisk or an electric
mixer. evenly distribute batter in
muffin tins.
Bake for 18-20 minutes. Muffins will
be extremely moist.
*Can be made with any flavor of
cake mix, so experiment to see
what you like the best. My family
likes spice, chocolate, and straw-
berry the best.

Peters Wellness ChiropracticLocated at the Northwest Corner of Litchfield and McDowell, inside
the Palm Valley Plaza in Goodyear.
In most cases our bodies are born pure and healthy and in a “perfect world” there would be no sickness or physical pain. Our good health is dependent on the absence of disease and pain. Our well-being depends on how well our nervous system is working. Somehow everyday living often steps in to interfere with perfection. Interference occurs with the simplest actions, such as repetitive motions. All of this motion can cause improper position of our spinal bones and irritate nerve tissue, ultimately altering messages to the nervous system; other common contributing factors include chemical intake, such as alcohol, pollution, tobacco and preservatives.
Dr. Troy Peters at Peters Wellness Chiropractic provides optimum chi-ropractic care for his patients, utilizing the philosophy which stems from a Chiropractic founder, Dr. D.D. Palmer, stating that a misaligned spine could cause nerve pressure and irritation which might in turn be the cause of vari-ous ailments within our bodies. This theory states that the structure and condition of our bodies directly influences function and how the body can heal itself, without the use of medications or surgical procedures.
Returning the body to good health is Dr. Peters’ top priority. Treatment for his patients includes non-invasive health care procedures, relying on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Dr. Peters seeks out the origin of the
problem before reaching a diagnosis or treating any symptoms. He special-izes in a dynamic system designed to optimize the body’s performance and healing, called Quantum Neurology ™ Rehabilitation. This unique system focuses on strengthening the Nervous System, the infrastructure which con-trols every muscle, organ and function in the human body. The techniques of Quantum Neurology ™ Rehabilitation are the very same techniques used by professional and Olympic athletes to help them achieve their physical goals. He is one of seven doctors utilizing this system in our state.
Peter’s Wellness Chiropractic has been successful in treating patients with a variety of conditions ranging from migraines, TMJ dysfunction, Whiplash, Neck Pain, Low Back Pain, Knee, Foot and Ankle problems. Troy received his Doctor of Chiropractic at Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California in 2005. He is licensed and certified in Quantum Neurology ™ Rehabilitation (Mod 3), a Certified Personal Trainer in the National Academy of Sports Medicine, a Certified Applied Kinesiologist and a Certified Massage Therapist. Dr. Peters has also been a member of the Southwest Valley Chamber of Commerce since 2005. The Peters family lives here in Estrella and enjoys occasional movie nights with their girls, Isabella, Ashley and Nicole, at the Starpointe Amphitheater. Occasionally Troy and Karie escape for a weekend date night, which usually includes dining out, followed by a romantic trip to Costco!

Estrella was recently selected as the number one
master-planned community in Arizona by Ranking
Arizona, marking the fourth year in a row Estrella has
received this accolade. Ranking Arizona is the outcome
of the largest business opinion poll in Arizona. Each
category is selected by the staff of Arizona Business
Magazine for the general public to vote on and is
based upon business and leisure activities of Arizona’s
business professionals. Thousands of individuals cast
their vote each year during Ranking Arizona’s open call
for the public’s opinion, with more than 200 different
categories open for public ranking.
“Since 2006, we have been honored by the readers
of Arizona Business Magazine as the best master-planned
community in Arizona,” said Greg Bielli, president
of Newland Communities’ Western Region. “It’s a
testament to the quality of our home builders, the vast
array of amenities we offer our residents, and our truly
spectacular setting in the Sonoran Desert Valley.”
Newland Communities would like to thank all the
residents of Estrella who voted and helped make this
recognition possible.

In early March, Estrella’s Exploratorium hosted field trips for
two 4th grade classes from Estrella Mountain Elementary School.
The students from each class had the opportunity to explore
the rich history of Estrella and Goodyear by examining the four-
panel timeline, the artifact kiosk displays, and the topography
table. Students filled in worksheet guides and also participated
in an exciting seek-and-find activity to optimize the learning
experience.
In April, the third 4th grade class from Estrella Mountain
Elementary School, as well as all three 4th grade classes from
Westar Elementary, are also scheduled to visit the Exploratorium.
Estrella is proud to offer the Exploratorium field trips to Estrella’s
youth in hopes of promoting better education and an interest in
Estrella’s future development and discovery.
The Exploratorium is open to the public Sunday through
Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more details, contact the Information
